There are two central points for this recording, each inseparable yet distinct. One is the instrumental music, which has echoes of the Balkans, Greece, southern Italy, and the Middle East. This is the music of clarinetist Laver Bariu and his ensemble of accordion, reeds, and percussion. The second element is the singing, a true polyphonic style, with multiple singers moving freely and apart above a single droning voice. The combination is quite unique, with instruments and voices improvising and mimicking one another, creating complex and rich sounds. There are moments where the drone of the accordion and the wail of the clarinet create a soaring, modern sound, only to be pulled down to rich earthiness by the voices. Recorded by the Globestyle team in 1994, these live-to-digital recordings are wonderful documents of a remarkable music. --Louis Gibson

And the accompanist?.......2003-11-19

The accompanist for this spectacular evening was Irwin Gage, whose masterful artistry catapults this recital into the "A"-class. This recording reveals a young Jessye Norman in superb form. It is a pity that the recording firm neglected to honor Mr. Gage's contribution.

My Favorite Jessye Norman.......2001-08-27

This is my favorite record by Jessye Norman -- and only SIX BUCKS! Some people are afraid of this series on sonic grounds, but this one (and most I have heard) is excellent. It's live and you will note a splutter or two but the concert is mostly well balanced and Jessye is well accompanied.The programme in particular knocks me out, the pieces contrasting enough to make repeated listening easy. Standouts are the Ravel songs and There is a Balm in Gilead, but when she opens with When I Am Laid in Earth you aren't going anywhere for the next hour. When Jessye came along I liked the big voice but felt there was a lack of artistry -- an unsophisticated judgment it would now seem. But roles like Belle Helene and Penelope gave her more variety of tone and when I finally saw her in concert I was unprepared for the spectrum of songs and arias she can sing. I wish I was at this concert though, here is a rare case of a CD exceeding even my memory of the real thing! PS I also recommend Von Stade in this series, though not Franco Corelli: he sounds like he is singing from the bottom of an elevator shaft.

Sir Thomas Allen makes the point in a note with this delightful collection of 25 ballads that he rates it beside his many recordings of music heavyweights like Wagner and Verdi. There is no need to justify his enthusiasm, for it is clear from the outset that he treats the music with the sort of complete respect that has made him one of our most-loved singers. It is too easy to be dismissive of this repertoire, but when it is taken at its own value and sung and played with honesty, as it is here, the results are heartwarming. Allen recalls hearing the songs in the family home following the two world wars, "a time when there seemed a need for reassurance." Perhaps that time is with us again, and these performances strike a chord. There are many old friends here and perhaps some new discoveries. Who can resist the beautifully constructed "Love, could I only tell thee" or that old potboiler "The Lost Chord", especially when given with such warmth? A picture shows Allen and family in full vocal spate. At the piano is his father, to whose memory he dedicates the disc. --Keith Clarke

Constant Lambert's eight brief settings of the Li Po Poems are wonderful, and the performances here are good. But it's worth pointing out that these songs have also been scored for chamber ensemble.

The King of Albanian Clarinet Music Performs his Best.......2004-04-15

My very favorite music has *always* been that of Northern Greece and Macedonina because of the unusual rhythms and melodies that have evolved in that region. I love the sound of the clarinet the best. It often reigns supreme in the music of the Balkans. The improvisational techniques and circular breathing developed by Laver Bariu while playing this rich and complex music of Albania has been imitated by soloists throughout the region, in fact it has crossed borders into neighboring countries. It has even jumped across the ocean and has become the standard "Balkan clarinet sound" which defines the music of the Balkans. It is an ancient sound that echoes from the past to the present. As the music is improvised, it conveys emotions about life, like no other instrument. The title, "Songs from the City of Roses" caught my attention however I couldn't believe my ears when I heard this music. It has been the CD I have always wanted to own. Laver Bariu is a musical genius, a treasure, hidden in the mountains of Albania and in the city of Permet, now his music has been released. The scent of the roses from Permet is traveling to the farthest reaches of the globe on the notes played by the King of the Albanian clarinet, Laver Bariu.

All the tracks and selections on this CD are outstanding. There are wedding songs and dances, astonishing polyphonic singing, a terrific song about trying to get a bottle of raki (strong brandy) which includes an unbelievable halting rhythm [3+2+2+2+3/3+2+3/3+2+3]. Track #4 is familiar, I heard it played locally by a Greek band. In Albanian it is called, a "pogonishte" rhythm. I learned to dance a "pogonisios" (Greek dance) which is mesmerizing, hypnotic and could be done for hours and hours without getting tired. Another song, "Do Marr Ciften" is also familiar in melody and rhythm. Other traditional instruments which complete the sounds of Albania are, second clarinet, def (a type of drum, llaute (an Albanian lute), the accordion, and at times a bagpipe. The voices are instruments themselves when sung in the ancient polyphonic techniques which include a vocal drone, called an "iso". This musical system has been preserved wherever Albanian communities developed in Europe. The music of Albania is rich, varied, complex and powerful. It leaves the listener yearning to hear more and also to learn about the ancient past from which it originated. This CD has the most dynamic and vibrant Albanian music I have yet heard. The other reviews only PARTLY right.......2002-08-14

I agree with both other reviewers re the duo coronet/organ arrangements on SOME of the bands of Disk #2 I have, but McCann plays them very well and the organ is fine if you like the organ (which I don't). BUT, the OTHER BANDS include orchestra and on ALL bands McCann really plays beautifully. However, I will not buy another disk of these because of the duo performance bands and - WHAT A SHAME as ALMOST ALL THE PIECES REALLY ARE AMONG WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL and MANY are very difficult, if not impossible, to find ANY arrangement of (though at least half on each cd readily avail other perfs arrangements).

Misleading CD title!.......2000-12-16

Thought I was purchasing a nice compendium of beautiful songs to listen to on long trips. You'd better love the golden cornet if you buy this CD - or, rather, 5 CDs!

Hope you like the "Golden Cornet" and organ..........2000-03-19

This CD set has all the greatest melodies... only they are performed by some guy and his "golden cornet" (a horn). There is accompaniment by an organ. This set WOULD have been great, IF it was performed by a piano. Huge disappointment. Would have been nice to know what instrument was used to begin with.
