Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great alternative gypsy compilation.......2003-07-26

I got this CD from England, which would explain why it's so little known here in North America. This is unfortunate, since it contains an excellent and varied selection of gypsy/pseudo-gypsy/proto-gypsy music. Not all of the tunes are true Rom music (A Temeto Kapu by Muzsikas is 100% Hungarian ethnic folk) but the ground covered on this recording, both geographically and stylistically, is impressive despite the presence of some "crossover" material. It presents a deeper more authentic look into the gypsy world than do the offerings of Putumayo's pleasant but rather watered down compilation, Gypsy Caravan. Here you'll find all the best of the European gypsies (Vera Bila, Esma Redzepova, Taraf de Haidouks, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Ferus Mustafov, and Kocani Orkestar) along with Muzsikas (not really gypsy but thats ok) and Turkish/Rajasthani stars such as the Erkose Ensemble and Roomal. A notable omission is Saban Bajramovic, the Serbian gypsy king, but then his new album is worth buying in its entirety (a single track on a compilation would not do justice to this old master).

On the whole, an intelligently compiled, authentic and highly representative collection of first-rate music. Recommended for Putumayo graduates ready and willing to dig a bit deeper.
