About the Artist
Marcel Khalife was born in 1950 in Amchit, Lebanon. He studied the Near Eastern lute, known in Arabic as the oud at the National Academy of Music in Beirut. Although at that time playing the oud was governed by very strict technical rules, Marcel Khalife and other musicians have since expanded the rules and developed the oud's potential. Khalife taught at the National Conservatory of Music and other institutions from 1970 to 1975. During that time, he also performed solo concerts throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1972, Khalife formed a group of musicians in Amchit, the town where he was born. The group, which then performed throughout Lebanon, wanted to revive Arabic music and its choral heritage. The Amchit group was an experience Khalife built upon to launch Al-Mayadine Ensemble in 1976, which soon won high renown. He and Al-Mayadine Ensemble continue to perform in concerts in the Arab world, Africa, Europe, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Australia, and Japan. Starting in 1974, he has collaborated to write music for the dance shows of the Caracalla Dance Troupe. The powerful combination of Khalife's music and the troupe's dance has given birth to a new style of Near Eastern ballet with a popular appeal. He has also written soundtracks for documentaries and films directed by the late Maroun Baghdadi, Sophi Sayhf Eddin, and Sami Zikra. The Arabic musical library has been enriched by scores of Marcel Khalife's works, surpassing 20 productions. Khalife's musical scholarship, particularly his mastery of the oud, express themselves in a seminal work the composer started writing in 1982, a six-part Anthology of Studying the Oud. In this work, he dwells on the theory and application of studying the instrument. A set of chapters are devoted to oud duo, trios, and quartets.

Marcel Khalife has received many honors and awards throughout his long and highly acclaimed career, including:

1. Medal of Cultural Merit, Tunisia
2. Star of the Lebanese Ministry of Tourism
3. Golden Dagger of the United Arab Emirates
4. Citation of Merit of the Cultural Lebano-Australian Club, Sydney
5. Ivory Medal - Abidjan
6. An honor from the Venezuelan Cultural League - Maracaibo
7. Citations of Merit from Berlin, Cuba, Bulgaria, and Yemen
8. Certificates and Letters of Appreciation from the Cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, and Houston.

4 out of 5 stars A True genius/artist/intellectual/composer.......2001-02-27

Marcel Khalife is one of the few musicians/composers that commands my complete respect. Despite living in such turmoil, he never calls for the blood of his opressors, he calls for the elevation of the spirit to rise above triviality, violence and oppression. It is full of lament and cries of hope. He is a true man of principle. He is truly the heart and mind of Lebanon! With songs like "After All That Happened" and "Sing a Little, Oh Birds" you can see the pain experienced in the region. As always, Khalife handles such painful matters in a delicate manner and elevates all those around him. His settings of the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish and others is masterful. I still love his purely instrumental music too ("Jadal" and "Summernite's Dream" are amazing!) Keep up the fight Marcel...your people will be free one day and hopefully live in peace with your neighbors!

5 out of 5 stars A genius, if I may say..........2000-01-29

Marcel Khalife is a great artist! He reflects the lebanese style, so unique and so rich. You will notice the depth of this album once you hear it, and undoubtedly, you will fall in love with it. He gathered eastern music with western music, and reached the depthness of the lebanese style. Melodies and harmonies reflect western music, while the non-repetitiveness and the depth of eastern music gave this album a new dimesion. Notice that this album is not all played on the luthe, most of the songs are played by an orchestra, conducted by Marcel himself. GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars Trial.......1999-12-28

To translate Man's suffering does not necessarily have to be bluntly expressed. While allowing Marcel's charming voice and daring strings to exploit you, give the words in this album more time, you will get the whole picture.

marcel khalife is one of the fews in the arab world that could arise the national sense in my spirit, i think that the artists of any nation are one of the most important elements that can grow up his education, and marcel khalife have done well. Arabic coffeepot showed, as all of marcel's creations, in a very sophisticated way, some of the national issues that arab nations suffer from. I don't know if great work is enough to be its evaluation but it is. "Nashoddo a'la ayadeeka ya marcel" and go on to get your and our right...
