5 out of 5 stars Voila, Le Maitre.......2007-01-06

I recently "discovered" Charles Aznavour in the used vinyl section at a local second hand shop. There I occasionally find gems while picking through the weathered relics of bygone decades. The same shop once yielded a now-beloved Nana Mouskouri album from the sixties, with songs in French. My French is passable at best, but it's easy for me to pick up on the romanticism of post-war French popular music, a romanticism which is now largely passe, apart from serving as background music at Macaroni Grill or the Olive Garden. I just love songs in French. Anyway, the Aznavour album was packaged basically like an album by Perry Como or some other "popular singer" of the era, but I sensed from the extensive liner notes that the lyrics (all written by Aznavour himself) were the work of a true artist. I hoped that his voice would not prove as dated as the packaging. I took a chance. I was not disappointed.

The production value reminds me of the fore-mentioned Nana Mouskouri album of the sixties. Some of it sounds a little Austin Powers, a little swinging sixties, but I don't mind. Musicians from that era seem much more versatile, more well-versed in all kinds of music from all over the world. The featured musical fills, whether by violin, accordion, what-have-you, are so tasty, so expert that they're almost boring; you take them for granted. Then there is the heavy orchestration, the notorious 40 piece violin sections. Fortunately none of it overwhelms the man's delivery and songwriting skills. His singing style does not sound dated in the least. It sounds timeless. He is masculine and strong, but not overly so, like Sinatra, who to me often sounds ponderous and self-important,dated like a WWII relic. Aznavour's delivery is light, subtle and rich, passionate yet disciplined. He never borders on self-parody, like Sinatra often does. He never displays that cheesy/smarmy rat pack/Las Vegas/lounge style.

The man can swing. You will feel it. It will move you, and you will want to move to its rhythms. Without having delved too far into the lyrics, I can say that thematically they are generally what you would expect. Things that would sound trite or clichéd in English sound heart-breaking and, well, French in this music. He sings of being 20 and the bittersweet memory of a woman who left him in Venice. Of poor artists painting their nude lovers in Monmartre, of the flowers, cafes and bakeries in a city that is now gone as he returns as an old man. Sad clowns with smiling faces--that kind of thing. Don't worry, it's all in French, and actually rather poignant.

I see that Aznavour is still going strong at 81. Guys like this are coolest when their music is not considered cool. Give it a try. I would recommend "Que C'est Triste Venise," and "La Boheme" as representative. Be open-minded, because this man has the gift of the muse.

5 out of 5 stars C'est magnifique!.......2007-01-04

All the songs here are wonderful -- I can listen to it over and over again, and still enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars A Velvet Voice.......2007-01-03

I am a loooooooooooong-time fan of this master of French love songs, and I was not disappointed. There are several songs that I just play over and over. I think what I love about his music is that I don't have to understand a word he says to understand his heart. He sings with his heart and that overrides any language barrier. His voice feels like something liquid warmth massaging you.

5 out of 5 stars Charles, Je t'adore.......2005-10-25

You can see from the title I am a devoted Aznavour fan and have been for 40 years. I have attended several of his performances and even met him once briefly. He is an extraordinary singer/songwriter and performer. He is 81 years old now and although he still records, he doesn't tour much outside France as he used to. He has, however, made a number of DVDs. Unfortunately, they have only been released in PAL format. I have so many Aznavour recordings. I bought this because it has a nice compilation for CD but it is by no means definitive. It's interesting, because I also have the Spanish version of this CD, "Sus Mas Grandes Exitos" which has the same cover, but a slightly different mix of songs. The French version omits "Que C'est Triste Venise" and "Mourir D'Amour," two of my favorite songs, but they are included on the Spanish. There are so many more than 20 songs which I consider Aznavour classics, that it would take many more CDs to contain. That said, I highly recommend this CD for both the diehard fan and the casual listener. It's a wonderful example of the work of this extraordinary man. He has never made a bad recording.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2005-05-01

You can take Edith Piaf, Gilbert Becaud, Yves Montand and put them together and don't even come close to Aznavour. Had the distinct pleasure of seeing him at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, as well as, the Olympia Theater in Paris, France, and other venues throughout Europe. Aznavour is the quintessence of the interpreter of songs (ala Sinatra and Ella), as well as, a most prolific writer of songs in the realm of Jimmy Webb, Gershwin, etc. His emotions and sentivities are eveident in EVERY performance that I have had the pleasure to witness. NONE BETTER!!!!! In addition, these traits are evident in very recording available by him. BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!!

    Album Details

More Than Just a Mere Pop Singer, Claude Francois (Nicknamed Clo-clo) was a Massive Phenomenon for Many Years. At his Death (From a Controversial Accident) People of Every Walk of Life United in their Grieving and Loss. His Shows were the Epitomy Ofdisco in all It's Finery.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Career spanning greatest hits.......2003-05-04

Claude began his recording career in 1962 and he was still doing well in his native France when he was killed in a road accident in 1978. During the intervening 16 years, he recorded for three different record labels. This compilation includes tracks from all three in approximate proportion to the time he spent at each.

Although he recorded songs by French songwriters (and even wrote or co-wrote a few), he recorded a lot of British and American songs with French lyrics. This was not a one-way process, for Claude was the original singer of Comme d'habitude, a song that Paul Anka translated into English as My way. It later became Frank Sinatra's signature song. A few months before his death, Claude recorded the English version of the song and it is included here along with his original French version.

Among the other songs that will be familiar to British and American listeners are December 1963 (Four seasons), Eloise (Paul and Barry Ryan), Reach out I'll be there (Four tops), If I had a hammer (Peter Paul and Mary), The marvellous toy (Tom Paxton), Walk right in (Rooftop singers), Mocking bird hill (which he probably did after hearing Migil 5's UK hit, although the song is much older than that), Freedom come freedom go (Fortunes), And I love you so (Don McLean), You can't hurry love, Stop in the name of love (both Diana Ross and the Supremes), I can see clearly now (Johnny Nash) and Yesterday once more (Carpenters).

This is an excellent collection of Claude's music. If you only buy one compilation of his music, buy this one. I was so impressed that I've since bought a lot of his other music, including a 10-CD box set covering his music from 1962 to 1972, which I've already reviewed.

5 out of 5 stars Clo-Clo the Authentic Entertainer and A Pop Legend.......2001-10-05

I remember...on a summer afternoon drive with the whole family, we were stopped at a red light. We noticed this flashy-white limousine right beside us. We all peered in to see who it was inside that car, and yes, it was Clo-Clo with all his Claudettes. He winked at us and waived us good-bye. Months later he died leaving us a wonderful collection of songs and I still feel that he hasn't abandon me or other devoted fans. I began to listened to Clo-Clo when I was 4 years old and have grown up with him ever since. Clo-Clo's zeal, excitment, flamboyance, and hard work as an entertainer on stage has not been matched by any other entertainer. Clo-Clo had to cancel a tour because he passed out on stage and was hospitalized for extreme exhaustion. That guy had ants in his pants and was born to be a pop star and nothing else. He was a talented drummer and had a good theoretical knowledge of the role that "the beat" has in pop music. His songs are not exclusive for any age. In a way, his music reaches a wide audience like Elvis' music. The majority of the songs are upbeat, happy, but the sad ones have heart-felt depth like "Le Telephone Pleure" or "Comme d'habitude" (which was covered by Frank Sinatra who renamed the song "My Way") But he coverered many american songs with grace, style, and energy. Songs like the Four Tops "It's the Same Old Song.." or the Carpenter's "Yesterday is Near me" sound better when Clo-Clo interprets and sings them in French. This album includes all the hits from the three phases of his career: early oldies stuff, middle 70s pop, and then Disco. It's the disco period that nearly all younger french people remember Clo-Clo for. He was as good as the Bee-Gees or Donna Summers. So what if he sings in french, isn't disco about the dance beat man? What is most remarkable about Clo-Clo is that we forget that he's just a short twerpy looking guy. His music combines the essentail elements of what pop should be: high entertainment value with shear naturalness and a direct pop-tune that has evolved with time. He has maintained that balance for his entire career. Very few can do this and that's is what separates the forgotten rock/pop artists from the true legends. Clo-Clo is a legend among others like Elvis. We miss you Clo-Clo.

Claude Francois has always been my favorite singer. This album includes his very first songs as well as his best hits. This is a great album and, as a native french, I would recommend it to everybody who wants to listen to some great French music from the 70's. We miss you Cloclo!

This album has his best songs. I like them a lot because they remind me of my parents and of the french "joie de vivre." This is a very good album if you want to be happy.

CLAUDE FRANCOIS was the perfect example of a popular singer in his time 1962-1978.He was also one of the champions of the cover versions of AMERICAN songs.Ironically,COMME D'HABITUDE has been covered endlessly by SINATRA and many others.More than 25 years after his death,CLAUDE is still hot and continues to sell well.Fans of THE FOUR TOPS will of course recognize REACH OUT,I'LL BE THERE and IT'S THE SAME OLD SONG.His first big hit was BELLES,BELLES,BELLES and his lasts were MAGNOLIAS FOREVER and ALEXANDRA,ALEXANDRIA.It starts in the yé yé years and ends in the disco craze. It's a good mix of originals and covers. The two cds collection is of course richer(48 songs),but many should be contented with the single one.For those who don't know,CLOCLO died accidently electrocuted in his bath.COMME D'HABITUDE was actually written for FRANCE GALL after they broke up.
