Passion of Pakistan [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
An early example of the world/trance beat. The pulsating rhythms, mesmerizing melodies and primal energy of Iabal Jogi and his company bring the ancient traditions of the Sufi mystics to life. Recorded in the 1950s, this music forms the foundation of today's modern ambient trance music.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly one of the best records to date.........2006-02-09

..and i have listen to a whole lot through the years.
Mesmerizing and minimalist, trance, ambient, techno, beats and outer-planetary melodies all rolled into pure bliss.
Listen to this and regret that we are destroying those same cultures that spawned all this folk music. The minimal and ever so slight changes resemble what would come out of the New York minimalist composers some years later, and it wouln't be surprising to find-out that Glass, Reich, Young and the others had listened to the recordings such as these during those years.
So natural, that it seems that the timeless melodies sung by the breath instruments are coming out of a child's mouth. Really there is not much to say as the music speaks volumes for itself.

4 out of 5 stars super-trance tremendous music!...but poor sleeve notes.......2004-02-18

The music on this recording is sufi trance music of the most stirring and powerfull kind, great shawm playing with circular breathing tecnique supported by the incredibly powerfull beats of the indian percussions tabla and of the dholak,a barrel-shaped double-skin drum played orizontally with both hands and with metal rings on one hand.
You have also sarangi, the pakistani fiddle, playing, sound of
which is very stirring.
I would highly reccommend it for anyone looking for natural trance and ecstatic music from islamic spirituality.
The only dissapointment are the sleeve notes which don't explain much at all about the instruments and the music played,it's rather poor of informations.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pleasure with with the Passion of Pakistan.......2001-08-26

I have lived in Pakistan and this relives the music I experienced there. This recording is an excellent example of the special and pulsating music coming out of the culture of Pakistan. Long before Nusfat Ali Khan- this collection of pieces bring forth the rhythm and beat that dates far back into the history of this area in South Asia. I have many collections of music from Pakistan and India, and this ranks as one of the best. The sound is fresh, and rejuevnating-it is a shame it went under "snake music" because it captures the deep spiritual influences of Sufism that yet needs to be appreciated. If you are interested in music of Pakistan, I would definitely buy this cd...and you will be hooked!

5 out of 5 stars Good intrumental Sindhi music.......1998-07-02

Nice pieces of work taken from traditional Sindhi musicals.

5 out of 5 stars A good album, but an iffy minor disc.......2005-07-05

The blurb on the back of this album reads: "Shortly before his death in August of 1997 Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan recorded a television broadcast documentary about his life and work for Pakistan Television. He performed some of his best loved songs in new arrangements on this program, working with new Indian and Pakistani DJ's in a live setting. The musical performances were recorded live in the studio and as such they are some of Nusrat's last recordings, recorded in April of 1997."

Despite this, the version of "The Magic Touch" that appears on this is, by all indications, identical to the version that appears on the Terrascape records version of the album "Ecstacy." I don't know what songs have appeared elsewhere, or what the story is with that--alas, I'm not terribly well informed on the discography of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to make a suitable conclusion. Perhaps another reader can shed some light.

Of course, any Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan album is good simply by Nusrat's presence, but I can't be entirely certain how "worth one's time" this is to pick up. At the very least the Terrascape version of Ecstacy is the one to get before this one.

Also the production credit on this CD reads John Matarazzo, but I'm not sure how honestly descriptive of the entire album's contents this is, because of the identical track that appears on the Ecstacy album. Obviously, this is the kind of difficulty when dealing with small independant labels and low key foreign material that has little percieved commercial value to the American market.
