Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

I had never heard of Josh Groban until one night I was looking at the
PBS series, "Distant Shores" with Peter Davison and this backgroun music came up. I had to search for the voice and the composer. It took me awhile to find Josh Groban. I am very old(veery!), studied music for years and he has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.
From such a young man it seems unbelievable. He reminds me of beautiful voices of yesteryear- a pleasure to remember.

Josh is even better in live!.......2007-04-14

I recently saw Josh on his new tour with Awake, and it was so awesome that inspired me to buy this DVD to replicate the experience a little bit. I loved it! Especially loved the few extra songs I've never heard before (Mi Morena, America). Some people were complaining about the nasal sound and quality, but this is a live show so of course it sounds a little different. Bottom line is I think Josh is a great preformer and his very funny also :)

This CD/DVD was very good. I watched the DVD and was impresed with the way He handles the "spot light." He seems to be a very humble person and I think that is what makes his music so enjoyable to listen to. Not forgetting his awesome voice!

Let me explain..........2007-01-14

There are several reviews that talk about how annoying it is for the fans to wave light sticks and/or American flags in this DVD. Perhaps if I explain why, it will seem less annoying.

The waving of the light sticks was started at the very beginning of his first tour, mainly to show him how much the fans appreciated the concerts. The first idea was to wave them during the last verse of "You Raise Me Up," when the choir came out. Later, fans added another show of support by waving blue light sticks during "Vincent (Starry Starry Night."

OK, if you still find that annoying, that's your right. However, the flag waving at the end of "To Where You Are" was special. This concert was filmed on September 11, and the flags were waved at the end of "To Where You Are" for those who were lost, and the families of those who were lost, on 9/11/2001.

It's your right if you still find these things annoying. I just thought I'd try to help you to understand.

Since this is a forum for giving our opinions of the DVD, I have to say that I love it. He has a beautiful voice and I love listening to him under any circumstance. The DVD is wonderful, IMHO.

Re-Live the Concert Experience!.......2007-01-09

Was fortunate enough to attend Josh's "Closer" concert tour date at Jones Beach--amazing voice. Getting this album brought back all of the memories of that amazing evening outdoors under a "Starry, Starry Night." I used to not bother purchasing live albums because they had poor audio quality, but not anymore. Love this album! (Actually, I love all of his stuff.)

DVD is so worth the price.......2007-01-08

I disagree with some of the reviewers complaining about a nasal sounding CD. Yes, there are few parts where it may sound a little nasal but people have to remember that this a LIVE concert and if they wanted perfect sound they should buy the studio album instead. He still sounded brilliant and great. The DVD is fantastic for all those who don't have the luck or means to attend a Groban concert. It captures the energy and pure joy of a concert. Sometimes its even better than being at the concert because you can see Groban close up. I hope that there will be a concert DVD released for the AWAKE concerts.

simply amazing..........2007-02-05

This was my first Josh Groban album and definitely not my last. I've never been fond of opera for the simple reason that I disliked not knowing the words. Clearly that is not really the problem because as far as I'm concerned Josh can sing to me any language he wants. He has a rich smooth sound that reaches deep inside. I initially purchased this CD for "You Raise Me Up," and discovered a wealth of inspiring music. In mi mancherai (il postino), the duet with Joshua Bell is heart rendingly beautiful. My favorite is "When You Say You Love Me." It's romantic and touching. Throughout, Josh demonstrates a remarkable capacity for variation in his taste in music and his skill in presenting it. This extended version included a DVD that clued me into his latest project AWAKE, which I'm glad I purchased as soon as it became available. I hope to see much more by Josh soon.

Golden Voice!.......2007-01-09

This album has inspired me to begin learning Italian. I learned the words to "Oceano" by heart almost immediately. Not a single song on this album do I not like. Josh is an incredible singer--one of the best voices I have heard in a long time. This is actually the second time I have purchased this album, because I wanted to get the accompanying "Making Of..." DVD.

This is the first album I bought from this artist and I loved it so much I bought all of them and then flew to Las Vegas to see the first concert I have ever been to--that sounds silly since I am over 60 and really think the music is wonderful!

I am a big fan of Josh Groban so this CD is one of my favorites. His song, "You Raise Me Up" was recently sung at a dear friend's funeral, and there was not a dry eye in the church. Josh really delivers the message of each of his songs in such a professional and musically perfected manner. Keep on recording, Josh, because we all love you!

Good CD and Clear Follow Up to Brasileiro.......2007-01-22

Oi... another I thought I reviewed but never did. Oceano was the last Sergio Mendes album (outside of a best-of) before the one he released in 2006 with the Black Eyed Peas. It was somewhat of a follow-up to Brasileiro, even though it came 4 years after that release. No need to get into the history of Sergio and his trio's, Brasil 66 or Brasil 77 groups. He's a very important producer for Brazilian music. I still remember hearing the songs from this many years ago.

I actually liked this one. It starts out with a very strong and breezy "Rio De Janeiro" where his wife, Gracinha, leads the vocals as she usually does in his more recent (1-18 years) releases. It has clear key work, nice harmonica and the end bursts into a samba. "Trilhos Urbanos" follows up, and again Gracinha's voice is the highlight but the song's got great percussion work and a neat bridge. I actually have to disagree with one reviewer's take on "Madalena"... some of my friends from the Dominican Republic actually really liked that song. It's got much more energy, tropical vibe and near merengue flow. "Puzzle of Hearts" was another song I liked, with a wonderful duet in Portuguese and English. "I can only live if it is for you"... how dramatic. Another highlight to this were the tracks featuring Hermeto Pascoal, "Capivera" and "Vale De Ribeira". They have a warm tropical feel and bounce to them, albeit crazy. "Vale De Ribeira" simply sounds like you're going on carnival rides (not Carnaval).

All in all, I liked this but have to admit, it is a little dated now. The album's heavy on keyboard work, which usually tends to do do that (date music). Also, it's more so on the 'adult contemporary' side, so it's not really something that the younger generation would've flocked to. It has a mature vibe and, well, that explains why I only really remember my parents listening to it evne though, much like Brasileiro, I grew to like it later on. "Anos Dourados" (Golden Years), covered twice, proves that. But the musicianship is terrific and he's got amazing guests (Simone, Hermeto and loads more) featured. I can't really compare this to his older material (with Wanda Sa, etc.) as it's just so different so I can really just compare it to the more recent works of his. This one isn't as strong as "Brasileiro", but still very nice and certainly more Sergio-esque than his latest release with the Black Eyed Peas.

Inconsistent in quality and concept.........2003-06-05

"Oceano" begins with a bang-- the outrageously terrific "Rio de Janeiro", a song guaranteed to catch your attention with its evocative rhythms and color, and terrific vocal in Portuguese. This is a song that really brings to mind the tropical color and passion of Rio.

Next is the atmospheric "Trilhos Urbanos", another song that brings you to a sultry oceanside balcony in Rio at sunset.

Unfortunatley things go downhill from these first two great songs. Oceano is too much a pastiche of styles, with different singers, much of it on the sentimental and sleepy side. Magdalena is probably the best of the rest, but it is too repetitious. Some of the songs verge on lounge music.

Sergio Mendes, in his various incarnations, has always been an artist who is quite variable in quality. At his best, he is very good indeed, but other times, unfortunately, he is rather forgettable. This is probably why he has always had a status that is rather hard to pin down.

Still if you can get a cheap copy of "Oceano" I would recommned it if only for the first two songs.

Sergio's Oceano is fantastic;full of color, warmth, rhythm, taste, regardless of ballads or up-beat cuts. Gracinha Leporace's voice is still awesome, and the collaborations of several great personalities like Gilberto Gil, Emmanuel and Zucchero are invaluable. The combination of the album? Brazilian Jazz, Samba, MPB, etc. Don't pass this album by, if you already know Sergio, you'll love this one; if you're new into the Brazilian realm of music, this CD will blow you away, purchase it a.s.a.p., you'll be thankful you did.

Excellent jazz mix with smooth vocals. Especially enjoyed the tracks in italian and spanish. Upbeat selections are nicely mixed with love songs.

Anos Dourados.......1999-09-16

Sergio's latest CD is great. Gracinha's voice is still magical and the ballads in this CD all have that warm tropicalismo like feel to them. Caetano and Hermeto Pascoal are also featured on this album. One of the master's of Bossa Nova once again has made another great album-- a must have if you enjoyed Brasileiro!

Oceano Conga Rock.......2006-03-26

I've been following this Panamanian band since their first hit Cogelo Suave back in 1982. This new CD is solid, the sound is fresh and up to date. Rencarnar en mi is awesome as is the hit single Anoche Sone Contigo. The tile song Limbo is a sad ballad that is emotionally powerful. Lead guitarist Pitongo is one of the Panamanian guitar masters, twenty years ago he claimed he was the lost son of Jimmy Hendrix. You should buy their music if you like top ten in the Spanish language. This is not Latin hip hop, reggaeton, salsa, or merengue. Oceano's music is virtually impossible to find in the US, if you are lucky enough to find Conga Rock, Oceano, No se gana pero se goza, buy it! The band has undergone several personnel changes through the last two decades, the only original members are Salo and Leo. The other founders have disapeared (Zito, Patricio, Boris). Pitongo a.k.a. Cervio Tulio Gonzales(?)has several hard to find unpublished songs that are worth listening "Quiero saber que estas conmigo" being the best. Oceano is a great group with talented individuals, I wish their songs would travel beyond the shores of Panama more often.

Banda latina (de Panamá) con buena música, y en este album, recopila los mejores exitos en la historia de la banda, lamentablemente no han tenido el exito que a mi criterio debieron tener. Personalmente recomiendo "El derramo su amor por ti" y "Me haces falta". Es difícil conseguir la música de esta banda. Ya casi que sus discos son de colección.

Exquisite, Endless Beauty & Rhythm.......2004-10-20

Five Big Stars!! Simone Guimaraes' wonderfully kaleidoscopic "Casa de Oceano" is a scintillating CD with many surprises. Especially the exotic and captivating voice with which Ms. Guimaraes has been blessed. The first time I heard Simone on Milton Nascimento's "Pieta" CD singing "Beleza e Cancao", I hurried to turn up the sound to hear every aspect of that incredible voice. What an instrument !!

Beyond that, on this CD Simone Guimarães surrounds herself with an impressive variety of special guests: Milton Nascimento, himself; the legendary Maria Bethania; classic musician/song melodist Francis Hime;the Grammy-nominated Guinga; the superb ContinenTrio; the wonderous strings of Quarteto Maogani; and more. She uses them to capture the many aspects of the sea shore, the ocean, and all things aquatic in a breathtaking manner, over and over. Hats off to the amazingly talented Jaime Alem for his CD production and his wonderful musical support of this great artist. The CD is beautifully recorded with a very immediate presence and can be considered a masterpiece of beautiful music.

The 'piece d'resistance' has to be the magnificent classic song "Milagre Dos Peixes" (Miracle of the Fish), written by Milton Nascimento. Simone Guimarães was BORN to sing this incredible song!! It's known to many fans from Milton's colloboration of 25 years ago with jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter on the CD "Native Dancer". This version tops that version, not to mention the surprise when Milton's own voice rises out of Simone's sonic maelstrom in mid-performance and pushes the proceedings along in a wonderfully inter-twined solo/duet. It's magnificent in all respects and the ending will have you holding your breath. I just wish it was longer, but that's what is so tantilizing about it and that's what "repeat" buttons are for on CD players.

Simone's own "Agua Funda" (Deep Water), the lilting samba "Desavenca" (with Guinga), the bopping samba "Zomba" (with ContinenTrio and Kiko Continental's very hip piano solo), the poignant "Cancao Brasileira" (Simone will tear your heart out), and Jobim's incredible "Retrato Em Branco E Preto" (with Simone's 'trumpet' solo and her evocation of the memory of Elis Regina) are quite fantastic, among the other excellent songs on this CD.

This CD evokes what legend says it must have been like to listen to Simone Guimarães when she was mesmerizing her fans in the clubs around Santa Rosa de Viterbo in her early career: personal, immediate, and wonderful. Want to hear some beautiful MPB music sung in totally captivating Portuguese? This is the one. Magnifico, Simone!!! Five Big Stars!!

Antonio Vega puso muy alto el listón con este pedazo album, en el que uno se da cuenta de que aparte de gran letrista y compositor es un guitarrista bastante notable. Océano de sol es una de esas canciones por las que no parece pasar el tiempo, una épica historia futurista que significa algo nuevo a cada vez. "Elixir de juventud" es una melodía maravillosa, y con un trabajo de producción fascinante. "palabras" o "el sitio de mi recreo" son baladas que se te meten en la cabeza y ya no olvidas. Es un disco corto pero imprescindible. ¿Qué hacéis leyendo todavía? Venga, a comprar, a comprar...!

This is one of the best spanish rock albums ever. Produced by the master Phil Manzanera, this album gives Antonio Vega an incredible sound. Again, Vega's lyrics are superb.

If you love good music, you must buy this album.
