5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Africa - you WILL enjoy your stay.......2007-05-07

Both Olatunji and his drums of passion were unknown to me when I discovered this CD. African folk music as well as world music in general was (and still is) just a budding passion. I was much more familiar with its' African-American decendents: the blues, jazz, hip-hop, and of course rock-and-roll.
Drums of passion confirmed my suspision that native african music can be just as powerfull as any of the aforementioned genres. Indeed, this album awakens the idea that almost all popular music today (besides classical) is spawned from traditional african music. With just a little bit of an open mind this CD should be greatly appreacreated by fans of blues, rock, jazz, world, and electronic music.
It's also of interest to note that this CD is relatively famous, it has sold millions but receives none of the media attention given to so many other great albums. Olatunji also led me to discover the Congotronics series which I have fallen in love with.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Title.......2007-03-20

Excellent album from Babatunde Olatunji. This is the first time I was listening to African drum beats and I guess this album motivates my self to look for more of the same and you can hear it repeatedly but still you feel it is unheard before!

5 out of 5 stars Olatunji Energy.......2007-02-18

Since I had owned the LP for many years, the wonder of Olatunji's drums was no surprise. This is the best for motivation when cleaning house or other jobs that require a boost in energy.

4 out of 5 stars the beginning .......2006-07-27

Before World Music existed as a genre, Babatunde Olatunji released this ground breaking disc. During the 1960's, anybody with an appreciation for music beyond the ordinary adored this recording. Like Mickey Hart, my father acquired a vinyl copy when it came out. He passed this first pressing onto a grateful son. While I enjoy Olatunji's landmark debut, I also have a balanced appreciation. While historically important, "Drums of Passion" is now very dated. While the integrity is timeless, the 1959 production is not. Nowadays, this recording sounds like a cross between an old field recording and the soundtrack to a black and white era film. Compared to the selections with vocals, the instrumental passages have best stood the test of time. The rhythmic arrangements, phrasing and improvisation will always shine. That aside, "Drums of Passion" just isn't as listenable as Olatunji's later material. I hypothesize that for some unknown reason, most who appreciate this debut never delve further into Olatunji's discography. While Babatunde Olatunji may have influenced Mickey Hart to become a rhythmic visionary, Hart completed the circle by producing Olatunji's best recordings: "The Invocation" and "The Beat." "Drums of Passion" is an essential but dated album and to award it five stars suggests that it is Olatunji's paragon recording. That's ashame since far from being the alpha and omega, "Drums of Passion" is the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars The best cd of it's kind.......2005-08-16

It is quite a claim to report that this is "the best cd of it's kind" and a healthy dose of subjectivity goes into that opinion. Some great drumming to be found here.

3 out of 5 stars Nice World Music Cd.......1999-12-21

The drums on this cd are very, very impressive, but on many of the songs the vocals aren't that great. I'd rather hear them chant in an african language instead of switching between english and the african language. Carlos Santana's guitar playing also really adds to a couple of songs on this album. I'd rather recommend Planet Drum than this album.

5 out of 5 stars This album was the start of something special.......1999-05-31

Babatunde Olatunji's album "Drums of Passion:The beat" is African songs, mixed with Western Music. You will find to some of the greatests drummers from africa on this CD, and also find to the world famous Carlos Santana playing with them. Olatunji made a great impact on Afro-pop. He was one of the first people to Mix the music of Africa and America. If you are interested in African Music, this is a must by.

5 out of 5 stars "OM".......1998-07-02

This album is righteous energy, energy, energy! I had seen him live, he is a saint. Amen "OM" and Praise the power of a drum! Put drums in childrens hands- Not Guns!

5 out of 5 stars Forget anti-depressants and multi-vitamins!.......1998-05-23

This album is so full of get-up-and-dance-energy you could clean your whole darn house while you flit around in rhythm. Babatunde is beyond the master he is called, and this album is pure mastery. You feel better and more appreciative of life with each song, even if you can't understand the lyrics.

"Akiwowo" is in particular a feel good song you will remember like a really good jingle, regardless of how long ago you heard the tune.

If you are a fan of African music and drumming, and by some extremely odd chance have not heard of this album, the time is now!

5 out of 5 stars Field Craft.......2004-11-18

Micky Hart is exposing a lot of people to what was once called field recordings. I am down with that! And he is fortunate to have the conduit that enables him to carry on his passion.

I was able to go to Africa on several mission projects and believe me, I know the excitment he is enjoying by bringing the listener into the root of percussion.

Drumming is akin to exploration... it never ends, the deeper one gets into it, the deeper it gets. Think of the concept of folding space or wurm holes. It is a profound mental and physical experience.

But as my nom de plume suggests... I'm a bassist. As a percussionist with a string to pluck, my study into percussion has enabled me to become a much better bassist. For that I am deeply indebted to the drum, and will remain an ardent searcher into the realm of the monophone. Thanks Mickey! Your research and network is expanding the vocabulary of many. We are listening.

5 out of 5 stars Great Rhythms.......2002-01-08

This CD features Babatunde Olatunji at his best. Some people may be familar with Olatunji and his style, but this CD is very different from the music he usually performs. It is more primordial, spiritual and emotionally charged. The music on here is an invocation to the Orshas, the Yoruba Gods, who were trnspoted across the Atlantic where their followers formed the religions of Santeria, Candomble and the like. I found the invocation to Sango (Shango in the Carribean), the masculine Orisha of warfare, storms and fire, to be particularly moving. The emotion with which Olatunji performs on this CD is amazing. I am impressed with this CD. It is very moving, but I also must remind you that the music on this CD does hold considerable religious significance to the Yoruba people, and as such deserves a good deal of respect.

One of my "Desert Isle" albums (you know, if you could only take 10 albums with you...), Passion is an absolutely gorgeous guitar album. This is probably the most cohesive, consistent of Jan Akkerman's solo albums, entirely played on steel string acoustic. The mood ranges from ebullient to introspective, in style from classical to jazz and many places in between. Suites 1 & 2 alone are worth the price of admission!

When he first appeared on the scene in America, Babatunde Olatunji was acclaimed by artists such as John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie; later, his influence was acknowledged by Carlos Santana and the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart. As influential as this breakthrough record has been, it is delightfully unassuming, simply a straightforward excursion into the rhythms of Nigeria. "Akiwowo" is a joyful evocation of the rhythms that are created by a moving freight train. "Oya", "Jin-Go-Lo-Ba," and "Shango" all feature drumming of fiery intensity. Make no mistake, this recording is about rhythm and percussion, but don't overlook the fact that Olatunji has a distinctive and powerful voice. He uses it to fine effect on a number of pieces on Drums of Passion, at times soaring above the drums, then joining in harmony with others in his troupe. This is a rewarding album that truly deserves the decades of popularity it has enjoyed. --Jeff Grubb

    5 out of 5 stars ..........2002-08-14

I first discovered this album back in the mid-1970's and still have my original LP copy, though the grooves are worn out.

It's finally out on CD and none too soon. If you're tired of pre-programmed, pre-kiddie, music-in-a-can, everything-sounds-alike, unoriginal-unimaginative, drum machine-coma-inducing and downright boring music, give this one a spin. It will get you off your derrier(spelling?).

5 out of 5 stars Drumming up passion in the 8th grade.......2001-04-14

I teach 8th grade in an urban, primarily African American Charter School. I like to open my kids up to a variety of cultural experiences, ranging from their own backgrounds to those very foreign to them. One of the ways that I do this is through music. Well, my kids love "Drums of Passion" so much, that one of them apparently took it home and forgot to return it, so I am here to order another...they listen to this CD so much that they know the words "by heart", even if they don't quite understand them. It is a pleasure to watch them voluntarily play Olatunji's music, rather than beg to listen to popular favorites...if your percussion can win the hearts of 13 year olds, you've got to have something going!

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Many Musicians.......2000-09-21

This is excellent traditional African music using various percussion and vocals. Very vibrant. Many tribal sensibilities are found in the rhythms.

"Jingo Lo Ba (Drums Of Passion)" was covered by Santana on their 1969 debut album.

    Great traditional music.

    5 out of 5 stars A purely ingenious cd.......2000-08-21

This cd is amazing. If you are a Mickey Hart and Planet Drum fan you would deffinatly enjoy Olatunji's Drums of Passion. Olatunji is a trailblazer in world percussion music. My favorites are Akiwowo ( Chant to the Trainman) and Jin Go La Ba ( Drums of Passion). This cd is a necessity to all percussion and world music lovers!

    5 out of 5 stars undeniably classic.......2000-01-25

i don't know the original impact of this album but i was just amazed when i first heard this. such a human album- utterly basic yet will get you at the deepest reaches. it would be interesting to hear what a techno dj could do with this.

It is a throwback to the Caribbean during its heyday, featuring songs that are very familiar to anyone who has traveled The Islands. Tom performs on pan and vocals along with his wife Ginie on bass and longtime friend Harold Blanchard on keyboards. Sail away on a windblown holiday to the land of sea and sun...
