The legendary South African flugelhornist had a great idea to celebrate his 60th birthday: put together a great crew of fellow countrymen and women musicians and singers, and lead them in colorful, powerfully rhythmic performances of some of the nation's most beloved songs. In showcasing so many fine singers and supporting players, though, it's Masekela's horn that occasionally gets lost in the mix. There it is over the rolling guitar and vocal choir explosions of "Mgewundini," taking a peppy solo that alternates staccato and smooth segments. And the disc opens with his horn as part of a brass section as well as taking a quick solo on "Fela," where Masekela's still relegated to weaving through the vocal inflections. On the gentle caressing ballad "Bo Masekela," he finally takes center stage with a moody performance that evolves into a percussive improvisation. He repeats the favor on the soulful, retro-funk-driven arrangement of "Ziphi'Nkomo," creating a balance for all the early fire with a simple, smoky statement. Many of the early songs on the disc feature that ever zippy rolling guitar line South African music is known for, but later tracks, like the tropical-flavored, steel-pan-inflected "Tamati So So," are a bit more easygoing, even seductive. As much fun as all the music here are the colorful liner notes, in which Masekela relates clever anecdotes about the history of these tunes. Some, like "Fela," are from his own catalog, while others ("Thanayi," "Mbombela") date back to the 1950s and earlier. --Jonathan Widran

    Album Description

Sixty Six Steps--the second collaboration between guitarist Leo Kottke and erstwhile Phish bassist Mike Gordon--is both an homage to and an experiment loosely involving island rhythms. "There are these syncopations within Leo's guitar playing that twist around in a way that remind me of calypso," explains Gordon. "So this album took form as an experiment in my mind to see whether Leo's unique style of playing could be mixed with this kind of music I discovered and really loved when I was younger. And it worked far beyond my expectations." "Mike was the first to notice that aspect in my playing, and I think I'd forgotten it was in there," says Kottke. "No one else had done that. He's very intuitive that way."

The pair had already successfully tested the waters as collaborators with the album Clone, released in 2002. When they crossed paths in 2004 at a music festival, Gordon told Kottke that he really wanted to do an island experiment as his first project following the Phish era. Rehearsed in Costa Rica and recorded in the Bahamas, Sixty Six Steps is seasoned with the buoyant rhythms and freewheeling spirit of the tropics. It is not literally a calypso album but one that uses the calypso feel as a touchstone for a set of performances by two of the most imaginative and mold-breaking musicians on the planet.

Sixty Six Steps is a mixture of originals and interpretations performed in ways that are vaguely familiar yet largely without precedent. For instance, you'll find a cover of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" sung in a deadpan monotone and performed on baglama (a Turkish banjo/mandolin-type instrument), guitar and bass. Then there's a pastoral Pete Seeger composition ("Living in the Country") given a spritz of equatorial light and air. A twisted Mike Gordon original ("Stolen Quiet") professes mock gratitude for a partner's exodus from their shared abode: "The sheer amount of surface space increased around here/With your diet soda gone, there's more room for my beer." An equally offbeat Leo Kottke original ("Balloon") features such lines as "When the raccoon steals the cheese behind Pandora's other box/Or the one you love is shopping for a helmet made of rocks/Balloon, balloon, balloon..."

Incidentally, the title Sixty Six Steps is taken from a sign at the base of a staircase leading to what is reputedly the highest point on the island. The steps curve around and go to the top of the hill, which is a great spot from which to view the sunset. In its own way, Sixty Six Steps winds and ascends to a point from which the listener can savor some truly unique musical vistas.

5 out of 5 stars Forget The Whiny Naysayers! This is GREAT Music!.......2007-07-21

If you play music in your car, your boombox, or your home audio system, you will love this CD! If you're part of the "new" generation of whiny, self-indulgent, music-should-be-free clowns who makes multiple copies and believes there is nothing wrong with stealing music, then you'll be crying like an ex who got the credit cards cut off!

Leo Kottke has been giving his fans aural pleasures for decades and this CD is no different. His impeccable musicianship, arrangements, and songwriting skills will keep you enthralled from the opening track. I wasn't familiar with Mike Gordon before this CD but the two of them mesh harmoniously and give an updated sound to Kottke's music.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon review right on, but spotlight's got it wrong.......2006-10-18

This is a delightful recording and musically even better and more fun than their first CLONE. (the whole formating/copyright protection issue doesn't concern me as I don't try to copy or play it in my computer and is not germane to these reviews, but it does seem Sony has gone too far with their solution) I love the originals (songs and instrumentals) and the covers and the sound of these guys playing in their loose, playful, virtuostic, calypso influenced way reminds me of the great stuff David Lindley and Wally Ingram have done... This is happy, fun easy listening yet highly skilled music. My only complaint is that the percussionist Neil Symonette didn't get equal billing. He really helps make this a great recording.

Don't let the technical comments distract you from the important stuff, if you like the great MUSIC these guys make (alone or together), you'll love this one too.

3 out of 5 stars Five stars for the music. No stars for the virus........2006-09-15

This is a tough one to review because it is difficult to separate the music from the copy protection. Tempted as I might be to speak from a soapbox about the latter, I won't. Many of you don't want to or don't need to hear about that. Those of you who do can find the whole business laid out pretty well in the other reviews.

Musically, this CD is simply terrific. Having listened to it several times I do not grow tired of it. It contains some of the most masterful acoustic guitar work that you will find anywhere. The sound is not overproduced. It comes across as down home and easy to listen to but the genius is there, plain to hear.

That having been said, there are issues and here are the facts. If you put this CD in your PC it will secretly install files that can harm your computer. This fact is beyond dispute. Sony/BMG has agreed to a class action settlement for damages caused by several dozen CD's including this one. If you own this CD you have until Dec. 2006 to file a claim for $7.50 cash payment or a free album download. Check the web for details and a list of other CD's involved. Enough said.

So if you play this CD in your stereo you'll be just fine. Keep it out of your PC though unless you fully understand the risks. If you must use this CD with your PC, I suggest that the safest way to do so would be to wrap the CD securely in a plastic sandwich bag for protection before inserting the disk in your CD drive. If you do that your listening experience might not be as pleasurable, but at least your system will be protected from infection.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant CD; ignore the foo-foos............2006-07-21

Okay, so it has copyright protection; it still plays, and this is quite possibly the best CD I have heard all year (and I have heard a lot). My only complaint is that they do not give equal billing to the percussionist, Neil "Goat Hooves" Symonette. The last Kottke-Gordon effort had some great moments, but with the addition of Symonette, this baby just hums along like my VW Beetle on biodiesel. It sounds warm and inviting, like a real group, as opposed to a couple of virtuosi who got together in a studio. Great selection of songs and a wonderful coherency throughout the entire CD. Seriously, ignore the pretentious, self-righteous, foo-foo, nancy boys who would rate such a wonderful CD as this based on their Freudian-technological issues rather than the music. May they be sentenced to an eternity fixing Leo's car!

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to listen to music -- now I have to reinstall windows.......2006-07-04

I'm tremendously dissapointed by this product. I can't express in words how angry I am at having to spend 6 hours repairing my computer after the cd installed a backdoor on to my that allow sony to access any file on my computer.

Its infuriating how the goverment has allowed SONY/BMG to do this to us. If a person has hacked millions of computers and installed software that allowed access to the entire harddrive, that person would be in prison. Sony /bmg did this to us and they get away with a slap on the wrist.

Despite the harm that this CD has done to me, I'm keeping it. It will be a symbol that I will use remind myself how our corrupt goverment is controlled by corporate interests -- and the harm that these corporations cause to increase their profits.

3 out of 5 stars Good collection but missing some key songs.......2007-05-17

I realize people are insisting this is not a greatest hits, but how can you claim to have a cross-section of his work captured here when you don't include anything from one of his albums, "Pictures At Eleven"? Sure, maybe you miss a few of his popular tracks in order to get some of the B-side material, but let's get real here.

4 out of 5 stars Definetely worth it........2007-01-25

Very good compilation and mastering of rare early songs and demos, and the best of Plant's solo career on a nice two disc package, though with a big omission in not including "In the Mood",one of his biggest radio hits and a fine 80's song to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Great career retrospective with lots of previously unavailable/rare stuff on the second disc.......2007-01-04

With the reissue of his back catalog forthcoming (in March 2007 but also available now in the boxed set "Nine Lives"), it's tempting to see "Sixty Six to Timbuktu" as not that essential for fans of Plant. That would be wrong. This isn't a "greatest hits" compilation so much as a brief career retrospective of Plant's work before and after Led Zep. True, the first disc has many of his hits but its missing just as many in favor of more obscure stuff. Plant's clearly tried to assemble his best material (in his mind)in a single set.

The first set has many of the popular hits that Plant recorded after Led Zep disbanded. We get 15 songs that were either hits singles or received a lot of airplay when they were released. Fans that want an album sequence chronologically will probably be frustrated as Plant has placed these songs based on the feel and how they flow from one track to another (for example "Little by Little" from Plant's third solo album "Shaken 'n' Stirred" is the next to last track on the first disc).

The second disc is a joy to have. It features a pair of singles that Plant recorded with his first band Listen in 1965/6. These are followed by a pair of demos from Band of Joy where Plant first hooked up with fellow Led Zep alum Bonzo (John Bonham). It's petty clear he's on the album, too, as Bonham's bashing drums are as much an important part of the recording as Plant's vocals. "Hey Joe" recorded in 1967 as a demo (the same year that Hendrix released his definitive version) more than holds its own compared to Hendrix's version with slashing guitar but, more importantly, Bonham's powerful drums backing Plant's impassioned vocal. "Operator" is a pre-LZ collabortion with Alexis Korner that prefigures the blues performances that would dominate the first LZ album.

The rest of the CD is made up of one-off recordings that Plant did for various tributes albums and soundtracks. They're all fun and essential for fans. "Let's Have a Party" from the charity CD "The Last Temptation of Elvis", and "Hey Jayne" was a B-side for "I Believe" featuring Plant on vocals and sitar (!). Next up is a cover of the classic tune "Louie Louie" with Plant on lead guitar. "Naked If I Wanted To" is a cover of the classic Moby Grape song from that band's first album. "Little Hands" is also a cover of Skip Spence's song from the solo album "Oar" (Spence was a member of Moby Grape and also briefly a member of the Jefferson Airplane). "Philadelphia Baby" features Dave Edmunds playing lead guitar with the band that Plant assembled for "The Principle of Moments". This track was a song recorded in 1983 but finished in 1985 and appeared on the "Revenge of Porky's" soundtrack. "21 Years" is a collaboration that Plant did with guitarist Rainer Ptcak and "Rude World" is from Ptcak's album featuring Plant and Jimmy Page on guitar. "If It's Really Got To Be This Way" is from a tribute album to Arthur Alexander. "Let the Boogie Woogie Roll" comes from Plant's appearence on Jool's Holland's "More Friends" album while "Life Begins Again" dates from a collaboration with Afro Celt System. The album closes with a live performance of "Win My Train Fare Home" performed in of all place Timbuktu with the Strange Sensations Plant's latest backing band.

This is well worth picking up for fans of Plant with the second disc of previously unavaiable songs. I also forgot to mention that a previously unreleased track appears on the first disc as well. "Upside Down" is written by the same team that wrote Plant's hit "Heaven Knows". This is a nice companion piece to the remastered "Nine Lives" boxed set even if 15 of the 16 tracks on the first disc duplicate what appear on the remastered albums. Bravo Robert! A great career retrospective this will probably be best appreciated by fans who have listened to and collected Plant's work since his Led Zep days. He has a restless, experimental spirit as a musician/singer and it's very much in evidence here.

5 out of 5 stars great "bonus" songs.......2006-11-28

First and foremost: who the heck said this was a "Greatest Hits Album"? the title isn't "The Very Best of Robert Plant" or maybe I'm just blind. For those of you whining cause his "greatest hits" aren't here, maybe you should read the liner notes where he says specifically that he DOESN'T want this album to be a "greatest hits" collection. He was reaching for more of a career retrospective, something to see how he's evolved over the years, not what's garnered attention. Anyway, even if you have all his studio albums, you must pick this one up, there's really only a few songs on here from his past solo albums, the rest are some great treasures that any Plant fan would love, sure they're not all like Zeppelin songs, but this isn't a Zeppelin album, sure they don't all sound like Plant's other studio songs, but we're not reviewing songs based on how similar they sound to past, present or future songs, but on how GOOD they are, something this album certainly is. Be sure to get your copy, Nine Lives should be filled with lot's of great bonus stuff as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Robert Plant 2 CD Set.......2006-11-10

I recommend Robert Plant Sixty Six to Timbuktu to any Robert Plant/Led Zep fan, because it has many great songs that Robert Plant has done throughout his solo career & it makes a great collection to the Led Zeppelin CD box sets as well!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best cover of the Beatles.......2007-04-04

Music of the Beatles performed by the King's Singers and Erich Kunzel with the Ciccinnati Pops Orchestra it's one of the best cover of the Beatles performed by classical musicians as them are. Thank you for the best product you have of this kind or genre.Music of the Beatles

    1 out of 5 stars A lesson learned.......2002-10-04

I like the music of the Beatles. I also like full orchestral performances of music. I like the quality of Telarc recordings. I like many performances by Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, although they have a predictable tendency to get overly gimmicky. I bought this CD off the store rack using that logic. Also, I had the balance of a freebie gift card in my pocket, just yearning to be spent. I had hopes of popping this CD in my player and hearing something on the caliber of Moody Blues (Days of Future Passed) or Renaissance (Scheherazade). The moment the King'Singers chimed in with their barbershop-quartet style vocals, I knew this CD was destined for my "never will play this again" bin. Without their vocals, it might have fared better. I regretted the purchase, but was able to resell it to someone who had different musical tastes than I. I've had a few instances where I was pleasantly surprised with the purchase of a CD on a hunch, but I will try to avoid this kind of buy-it-blind purchase again.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Stoner Rock.......2003-07-26

If you like the fun genre known as "stoner rock," then you'll like Sixty Watt. They revel in Sabbath riffs, mixed with liberal doses of southern rock. In this case, that's not all bad. "Fear of Death By Water" has some cool slide licks and singer Dan Kerzwick's rasp sounds like he just drank a 5th of whiskey. "Low Earth Orbit" has a laid back groove and existential lyrics, while "Roll The Stone" is pure Skynyrd all the way. As with a lot of bands that play this kind of music, their repetoire is limited and after awhile the songs tend to repeat themselves. This record is a good beginning though.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best stoner rock!.......2002-11-26

I like this much better than Queens of the Stone Age or even Kyuss. I think this is the best stoner rock band around.

    4 out of 5 stars A new beginning..........2002-10-04

This was their first true recording project, although it was thier second full album. I give this album four stars, because, though I love this album and this band, Five stars would mean it's an album that stands next to Physical Graffitti, the White Album, and a select few other records. This album is a must own for fans who enjoy any of the splinter disciplines of what Sabbath, Hendrix, and Zeppelin started. An album worth the money, with many great songs and performances. If there are any criticisms, one would be the production. It leaves some room for improvement. Beyond that, I hope this band can continue to build upon this awesome release for years to come. Purchas and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Sixty watt Shaman ROCKS!.......2002-09-02

If you like bands like Down, Hendrix and Sabbath you may like this band. Sixty Watt Shaman have stated those bands have influenced them heavily. And you can really tell. I think they are a solid southern heavy stoner style Rock band. If you mixed 50% Down with 40% Hendrix and 10% Ozzy/Sabbath you would get something that resembles Sixty Watt Shaman. Though in my opinion they are not Nearly as good as Down. I still think Shaman ROCKS!

    4 out of 5 stars Got rock?.......2002-05-16

Do you like Clutch? Because if you do, you'll recognize a lot of that band's sound here. Thick, heavy grooves? Check. Gravelly, wailed vocals? Check. Thumping rhythm section? Check. Massive guitar riffs and fuzzy lead work? Well, you get the idea. However, past the Clutch resemblances, there is a lot that makes this album interesting. Joe Selby is an outstanding guitarist who pulls off an enormous array of sounds. Opener "Fear Death By Water" demonstrates the range of his abilities right off the bat, with a combination of monster riffs and addictive slide guitar work. Other, slower tunes see him branching out into acoustic work, with Dan Kerzwick bringing his vocal energy down a notch to match. The band mixes harder tunes with the slower and softer stuff for a while after "Fear Death by Water," until it reaches its peak towards the end with the monstrously heavy "Red Colony" and "Rumor Den." There aren't any truly weak songs on here, and the diversity of the songs keeps "Seed of Decades" from ever getting boring. I look forward to more good things to come from this band.

    5 out of 5 stars breathless.......2006-05-31

The sound from harnoy;s cello is enough to make me cry. she produces such tone and anyone that doesnt agree is uneducated. what can i say elanor rigby the phrassing outstanding ofra has been and still is one of my favorite cellist.

4 out of 5 stars Beatles Like I've Never Heard Before.......2005-02-10

I borrowed this CD from the library out of curiosity and what a delightful suprise. The interpretation of Beatles music is wonderfully simple - I especially love the different variations done with the same tune in some of the pieces giving them a fresh sound. Harmonies between cello and violin in "Norwegian Wood", "Across the Universe" and "Girl" are mesmerising. Mostly played with a slow tempo, this is great soothing music after a stressful day. This CD is definitely worth purchasing for a twist in popular Lennon-McCartney compositions.

4 stars for song selection, otherwise 5 stars for interpretation.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting Cover, but Bad CD.......2004-06-05

I can not believe that Ofra is even famous. Her playing is so stiff and lacks phrasing. Her tone quality is horrible. The only reason that she makes recordings is because her father is rich and he bought her a several million dollar cello and paid symphony orchestras to let her play solos with them. But, it is interesting to hear a cellist play the Beatles. Only buy this CD if you have boughten every cd on this webstite and have a little money left over.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Relaxing.......2004-05-21

The Beatles and Ofra Harnoy! The best of both worlds! What more could you ask for? A friend gave me this CD, and I have enjoyed listening to this right before bedtime every night. Ms. Harnoy, I applaud you for making some of the finest renditions of my favorite Beatles tunes. If you're a semi-professional classical musician like me and you don't have this in your CD collection, you're missing out--Big Time!!! 5 + stars for a wonderful CD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and powerful.......2002-01-01

Before you write this off as another attempt to "muzak" the Beatles, listen to Harnoy's lovely playing on "She's Leaving Home," "Across The Universe" and "Girl" and see if you still feel that way once you've heard them. A great set of interpretations by a most evocative cellist.
