5 out of 5 stars Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09

For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

It's a good album with some fun songs. You can't ask for much more than "Caminando" to make you want to move!

5 out of 5 stars Brightest star in contemporary Italian music.......2006-11-16

Almost unknown to the rest of the world, Anna Oxa has been one of the most important and influential singers of the Italian pop scene... She posseses not only an extraordinary voice but also an overwhelming charisma on stage. "Senza Pietà" (No mercy) was the winner song of the legendary San Remo Festival in 1999, but back then she was already a big star in Italy. "Verrai" (You will come) and "Sweet love" are the other two songs that set this album apart from all that she recorded previously. Simply one of the greatest Italian divas...

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-07-11

I initially bought this for the duet between Ana and Chayanne, but was blown away by the rest of it. Her voice is fantastic! Even though I don't understand Spanish, I still thoroughly enjoy her work.

5 out of 5 stars Pure and uninhibited talent!.......2003-07-06

Anna Oxa is a little bit Cher, a little bit Madonna, a little bit Shakira, a little bit Tori Amos all rolled up into one person. In Senza Pieta, Anna clearly demonstrated her vocal capabilities and artist talent. The duet with Chayanne is out-of-this-world, but my favorite track is the title song, Senza Pieta.

Regarless if you speak or understand Italian or not, the music transcends all artificial barriers and speaks to your soul (so much so that I am confident you will love Anna as much as I do). Highly highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-05-04

Honestly, I bought this cd to hear the duet with Chayanne. While the duet is incredible, so is the rest of the cd. Anna Oxa has a wonderful voice and I enjoy the entire collection of songs. Each one is worth listening to and enjoying

The gods of musical commerce are smiling on hot young countertenor Andreas Scholl: this is his second CD of opera arias to appear in less than a month. The previous disc, a selection of Handel arias on Harmonia Mundi, showcased Scholl's considerable strengths: subtle and sensitive phrasing, deft coloratura, and a pure, rounded tone with little of the disembodied hootiness that used to be accepted from countertenors. His first recital disc for Decca gives us a wider range of music (Hasse, Gluck, and Mozart as well as Handel) and a more complete representation of Scholl's singing--vices as well as virtues. Among the former are his top notes (sometimes squealy or poorly tuned) and a Joan Sutherland-like combination of beautiful sound with indistinct diction and lack of temperament. This is particularly damaging in the laments from Rodelinda and Giulio Cesare, which come across as mere pleasant pastorales; the famous "Che farò?" from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice sounds self-satisfied rather than bereft. (To be fair, Roger Norrington's jaunty tempos deserve much of the blame for this.) Scholl also aspirates his coloratura, which will bother some listeners more than others. On the other hand, "Oh, Lord, whose mercies numberless" from Handel's Saul is radiant, and the two arias from early Mozart operas are thrilling. In the end, the disc gives a fair, well-rounded picture of an important young singer. Speaking of pictures, by the way, Decca's photographer deserves plaudits for making this tall, somewhat gawky German with Nana Mouskouri glasses look almost glamorous. --Matthew Westphal

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album from this marvellous countertenor.......2007-03-16

I'm no expert in classical music and found my way to this album by a rather circuitous route. I hadn't heard a countertenor before listening to a snippet of Andreas Scholl singing Ombra Mai Fù on iTunes and finding his voice very intriguing. I did a little research on the countertenor voice, not sure whether I actually liked what I heard or not. Eventually I decided to try a CD and I picked "Heroes" as it has Ombra Mai Fù - yes, a very popular a possibly over-sung aria, but still one I love.

"Heroes" was probably just the right album for me to pick. There's a range of different music on here, some Italian, some in English, and with different singing styles. But throughout the whole album Andreas Scholl's voice is just stunning. It's a very warm, pure sound and you can hear the words that he's singing. It's not over-warbly, something I don't like in classical singers, but on the other hand he doesn't sing in a plain or bland manner. It's an album that, for me, improves as I listen to it more and more. And yes, I do very much like his voice; I've never been a fan of female altos, somehow they don't seem to quite have the power or feeling that I like to listen to, but Andreas Scholl seems able to produce that. Not only have I now ordered his "Arias for Senesino" album because I enjoyed this one so much but I'm planning to attend a concert where he is singing in Germany. And that, as a result of listening to just one CD, is high praise indeed!

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-11-06

I like the quote by Andreas Scholl printed on the outside of the record jacket: "There is more to heroism than winning fearlessly. My heroes have moments of weakness and must overcome their difficulties." There is no doubt that when he chose the selections for this disc he had this thought in mind. Heroes such as Jupiter in 'Semele' who praised his lover Semele with the lovely 'Where'er You Walk' and at the end killed her (nice guy)- Bertarido in 'Rodelinda' singing 'Vivi, tiranno'after killing a mobster(justifably) and then refusing to kill the 'ringleader'- Orfeo in'Orfeo and Euridice' singing a song of longing for his wife after sending her back to death by making a huge error- and David in 'Saul' singing 'O Lord, Whose Mercies Numberless' one minute asking God to help Saul and afterward hating and fearing him. Scholl handles all of these situations pretty much in character. His voice, as always, is clear reflecting the fact that his training even thuout his 'changing' voice at puberty was always geared to the head voice. His teacher cleverly detected that that was his best voice. Of course, the English for centuries have known this and followed thru producing such excellent countertenors as Bowman,Chance,Blaze etc. This is a very exciting and entertaining group of arias well worth the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars What would this world be without countertenors?.......2002-12-11

I met my first countertenor a few years ago and I had the priviledge of singing beside him in our choir. The incredible purity of the countertenor voice is something that I, as a Baroque music lover, can only dream of achieving. I think that Andreas Scholl is one of the most incredible countertenors today. The purity of his sound and the passion of his performances speaks to me in ways that only music can. I own several of his albums, and this is my favorite. Nothing is quite incredible as in 'Pallido Il Sole' when he dips into his natural baritone register for a few notes and comes back up again. There is something mystical and beautiful about male altos and we, as the female counterparts, should try to emulate.

    3 out of 5 stars no emotion.......2002-09-29

If nice voice only is what you are looking for, go for this CD. But if you are looking for the emotion and the _interpretation_ of the arias (my case), this is not your choice. No emotion comes across....Pity.

    5 out of 5 stars Heavenly Voice.......2001-09-21

I like so much Baroque music. At this period, singer is a man that is not a woman. They are always prase for GOD, love......
If you can select this CD, you can meet the new classic world.

This CD is a compilation of (mainly) devotional music sung by Pavarotti when he was in or near his prime, most going back, gloriously, to 1976. Precisely what Orfeo's lament (from the Gluck opera) is doing in a recital called "O Holy Night" is beyond me, but the rest of the selections are well chosen. The title song is gorgeously enough performed to be worth the album's asking price, the tenor's voice ringing out with great clarity and beauty, and the selection from Rossini's Stabat Mater is even more thrilling, with its ascent to high D flat near its close. Verdi's "Ingemisco," from his Requiem, is handsomely and sensitively delivered, and the others elections, with or without choir, are simply stunning. A CD for Christmas and the rest of the year as well. --Robert Levine

It is such a pleasure to listen to Luciano Pavorotti's Christmas songs, it is such a treat to listen to these lovely songs he sings. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars For the meaning of Christmas --.......2006-11-02

For enjoying the spirit of the Christmas season, I rely on The Time Life Platinum Christmas Collection, "Treasury of Christmas I", 3 CD set of 36 songs by various artists, UPC 1130-11311-2. But for the MEANING of Christmas, only Pavarotti's renditions of these timeless, beautiful songs meet the challange. I've listened to others, from Il Divo to Carerras and Domingo, but none meld the scores, arrangements and precise delivery and have the same effect upon the listener. This is Pavarotti, the ultimate tenor, recorded at his best.

    5 out of 5 stars The Maestro.......2006-01-15

These are the great musical selections that only Pavarotti can do justice. To put them into the hands of someone else would be a disservice to both the composer and the listener.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07

This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars a resplendent recording.......2000-06-18

My favorite living singer, Hvorostovsky's baritone is like dark honey and in this recording of mostly 18th century arias he shines. There is an expressive purity to his voice that will fill your soul with peace and harmony. The final track, Stradella's "Pieta, Signore" is sublime, and it's worth having this CD in your collection if only for this one piece.

3 out of 5 stars Not the finest.......2000-06-05

These are wonderful old arias, but it is too bad that Hvorostovsky cannot alter his style convincingly enough to carry them off. His Italian diction is somewhat sloppy at times - dropping the end of words. Listen to first time he sings "languisce il cor" in "Caro mio ben", and you will hear "languisce il co" Also, his aspirated breaths interfere with the music quite often. He begins the first aria "Vittoria mio core" not with a note but with a grunt.

These failings do not affect the entire recording - the first Gluck aria, O del mio dolce ardor is beautifully and tenderly sung. That is what makes it a pity - it is uneven.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful change of pace for our Siberian nightingale.......1999-06-06

'Mr. Hvorostovsky, you've done it again!' This time the superlative young baritone of our time takes the old chestnuts so familiar to voice students and treats them with the love and respect they deserve. Hvorostovsky's wonderful tone, breath control and attention to phrasing should make him a model for the people who usually sing these songs. Fine interpretations indeed.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome display of vocal fireworks.......2004-05-21

If it's a tenor voice you want to hear look no further. Franco Corelli is undisputedly one of (if not the) greatest tenors of the 20th century. His voice is capable of unbelievable power and exquisite pianissimo's. The broad range of religious arias, Italian songs and arias is enough to keep anyone's attention and have them panting for more. I recommend this wholeheartedly. Enjoy...

    2 out of 5 stars A Great singer, BUT..........2002-11-05

First of all: in my opinion I think it would be hard to find any other tenor with more thrilling sound than Franco Corellis.
But what goes wrong when it comes to his studiorecordings? It sounds too often that he wants to surpass oneself, like he wants to give us even more broadly tones all the way up( of cource his high c in "Granada" is good and the ending of "sole mio" is unbelievable) and it only will go at the expense of his overtones, because he uses too much muscles and is too heavy. The result of it: you get tired listening to him. And for Heavens sake: Whats the use for him to sound more manful?!!!!
Of course some songs here are good, but maybe only 10 out of 44, and thats not good enough for such a GREAT singer.
At last, why does he sing "off the voice" in Bach/Gounods Ave Maria? It`s so unnecessary, beacause he really had breath enough!
In my conclusion I will not recommend this recording, Because it`s such a disappointment.

    5 out of 5 stars Review..........2002-01-18

I own this C.D. and I have listened to it many, many times. Allthough I understand the feelings of the reviewer saying the songs are sang by the same fiery tone, I don't understand them fully. I would come to this conclusion if I would have listened to this the songs on a (too) soft volume.

If you really listen to it, not as backround music , but so you can hear it well and you aren't doing anything else, you will notice with how much passion a lot of the songs are sang by Corelli. Core 'ngrato is filled with passion, and I think Corelli is unsurpassed with that song. He didn't have lack of musicality either... Perhaps some more lessons would have done him good, but almost everyone could use some more. I even say that listening to some of Corelli's recordings is like having a singing lesson.

I would really recommend this C.D. if you are interested in his voice. the Core 'ngrato, Ave Maria and O sole Mio are great for instance. If you want to try full opera recordings try Il trovatore, Norma or Andrea Chenier

4 out of 5 stars Unequalled Neopolitan Songs.......2001-05-16

Franco Corelli, who sang from 1951 to 1975, was the greatest tenore di forza of the postwar era. A powerful and exciting singer, never a subtle, elegant, or refined one, he had his detractors (who called him crude, vulgar, self-indulgent, and who lambasted his execrable French), but there can be no argument about the quality of his voice, a big, vibrant tenor with a thrilling timbre (often described as rich, dark, or baritonal) and a brilliant, secure top that must have been the envy and despair of other tenors. A nervous performer repeatedly subject to pre-performance jitters and anxiety attacks (a wag once said of him that Corelli could always think of more reasons not to sing than to sing), once onstage he was a generous singer who gave fully of himself and, like Caruso, poured out his magnificent voice unstintingly, never holding back.

The voice itself was one of the glories of the generously-endowed operatic scene of the Fifties and Sixties, and one of greatest tenor voices of the century. Herbert von Karajan said of Corelli, "A voice of heroic power, yet with great beauty of tone; darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic . . . but above all, a voice of thunder and lightning, fire and blood." Harold C. Schonberg, senior music of the New York Times, reviewing Corelli's Metropolitan debut in 1961, noted that his voice "has something of an exciting animal drive about it, and when Mr. Corelli lets loose, he can dominate an ensemble," and later described his voice as "a force of nature, an act of God, the vocal equivalent of an earthquake, volcano or hurricane." The distinguished musicologist Paul Henry Lang writing in the New York Herald-Tribune called Corelli "a latter-day Caruso." Alan Rich of the New York Herald-Tribune wrote of him, "There is no tenor in modern times, Italian or otherwise, whose voice rings out with greater vibrancy, whose every tone carries with it emotion at white heat. The sounds he makes, seemingly without effort, are dazzlingly bright, urgent, and communicative." Since Corelli's retirement we haven't heard anything remotely like him, and those of us who know his voice (and Bjorling's) can perhaps be pardoned for finding the "three tenors" so popular today somewhat anemic in comparison.

I have been an admirer of Corelli, a collector of his recordings, and a follower of his career since the late 1950s (when he had not yet sung in America, and his only recordings were Italian Cetra imports). I have just about everything he recorded. There is no tenor voice before the public today equal to this one, and I urge you not to miss it.

But the two-CD set under review here is not the place to start. If you are new to Corelli, I recommend the EMI single CD "Heroes" or the EMI two-CD set "Franco Corelli," with their heavy doses of his typical operatic fare, as ideal introductions to this rewarding singer. Corelli was above all a creature of the opera house, in his element singing Puccini, Verdi, and verismo Italian opera. The set under review here, misleadingly entitled "Songs and Arias," contains in fact only one aria, a very atypical one: Handel's "Ombra mai fu" from "Serse" (made famous by a Caruso recording). Indeed, some of the composers represented here-Handel, Schubert, Bach, Mozart, Rossini-are in fact stylistically very far from the kind of singing one associates with Corelli. A couple of the songs, "Because" and Grieg's "I Love Thee," are mildly comical in Corelli's overpoweringly Italianate and operatic renditions. But this is a set well worth owning for anyone who knows and likes Corelli. There is a first-rate Ingemisco from the Verdi Requiem, the traditional religious songs are all sung with seriousness and devotion, and most important, the bulk of the set comprises Neopolitan songs, which Corelli sings superbly. (I think he sings them better than anyone.) Of these my own favorite is "Core n'grato," a powerful song, and Corelli's recording of it is unequalled: there is a prodigious outpouring of bronzen tone here that must be heard to be believed. It's true that some of the orchestral arrangements are corny and dated, but with gloriously gutsy, full-blooded singing like this, from one of the greatest tenor voices of the century in its prime (all the recordings here are from 1961 to 1965), I can overlook the arrangements. These two CDs are very generously filled (22 songs,77 minutes for one and 23 songs, 78 minutes for the other), and include, I believe, everything Corelli recorded for EMI that wasn't opera.

If you like Corelli, if you like Neopolitan songs, you'll want this. But it's not the place to start in appreciating Franco Corelli.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Corelli fan and even less now after hearing these CDs........2001-01-17

Corelli's voice was quite large, but I'm not very sure about it's beauty. He is much better in operas, but on these discs,I find his singing annoying. To the reviewer who wrote the Major Disappointment review and included Di Stefano in those not having a beautiful voice,I'd have to say that you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT AUDIO HISTORY OF THE 50'S & 60'S AT THE OLD MET.......2000-01-01

A wonderful collection of arias and scenes from recordings made by the wonderful artists who were Metropolitan Opera regulars in the late 1950's and early 1960's. All of them recorded for RCA Victor, and this wonderful vocal bouquet is fairly representative of the singing they did during their vocal heydays, though a couple of them were a little past theirs at the time they did these recordings. Some of the highlights:Jussi Bjoerling's historic "Nessun dorma" from the wonderful complete "Turandot" recording; Anna Moffo's fragile "Un bel di" from the complete recording of "Madame Butterfly"; Birgit Nilsson, with steel and javelin in her laser-beamed voice, singing a spectacular "In Questa Reggia" from the "Turandot" recording noted above; Renata Tebaldi, in exquisite voice, singing "Signore, ascolta" from the same "Turandot" recording; Zinka Milanov, perhaps a shade past her best days, nonetheless singing a beautifully controlled "Visi d'arte" from her complete "Tosca" recording; Roberta Peters performing the Mad Scene from her complete "Lucia" recording; Leontyne Price's opulent voice wrapping itself around "Tacea la notte placida" from her first complete "Trovatore" recording. Remaining contributions from Franco Corelli (a poorly articulated "Flower Song" from "Carmen, Rise Stevens (well past her prime in the aria from Gluck's "Orfeo"), and Leonie Rysenek (vocally and dramatically unsuited to the "Macbeth" scene) are somewhat less auspicious. Still, there is much to savor and admire on this recording, and at the mid-line price, it can't be beat. Enthusiastically recommended for all opera people.

    Album Description

    The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12

The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." 5 out of 5 stars Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

    Finally, the
