About the Artist
Floyd Lloyd Seivright

Veteran singer/songwriter, pianist and music publisher Floyd Lloyd Seivright was born in St. Ann, Jamaica. He began his musical career at the age of twelve at the Alpha Catholic School, Jamaica's first "fife and drum" school founded in the late 1800's. Alpha produced such musical giants as Lennie Hibbert, Don Drummonds, Tommy McCook and Rico Rodriguez, who served as inspiration for Floyd.

Over the years, Floyd Lloyd has worked extensively with his mentors, writing for Derrick Morgan, playing with McCook, touring and recording with Laurel Atkin and producing live albums with Justin Hinds and Rico Rodriguez. Both Rico and renown Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin are featured on many tracks of Floyd's recent work, notably OUR WORLD WITH ERNEST RANGLIN, VILLAGE SOUL and MANGO BLUES. OUR WORLD is a double CD set that is currently distributed by Reggae One Love and Tropic Entertainment. VILLAGE SOUL, Tropic's instrumental album, fe! atures some of the last known performances of the late vibraphonist Lennie Hibbert.

Floyd Lloyd uniquely fuses the sounds of Ska, Reggae, and Jazz like no other artist. On TEAR IT UP: The Ska Album, OUR WORLD and MANGO BLUES Floyd recorded with musicians from New Orleans, Jamaica and London, notably The Potato 5, Red Cloud and the New Orleans Jazz Stars, creating a natural marriage between New Orleans brass and Jamaican rhythms. TEAR IT UP is a Tuff Gong International release and is the first of Floyd's works to be released by them in North America with distribution through WEA.

After living in England for 24 years, Floyd is currently residing in New York. As a veteran of the Euro-reggae/ska scene, he is established as a prolific singer and composer with hits like the Mighty Diamond's "Sweet Lady" and The Potato 5's "Big City" and "Jesse Jackson". Floyd Lloyd and the Potato Five with Laurel Atkin was the first ska album released on Sony Records in Japan and Asia! . As well, he is featured on several compilation albums: ! Ska Stars of the 80's, This is Reggae Volume 1 & 2, United Colors of Ska, and KPM's The Reggae Album.

Floyd Lloyd Seivright was the first West Indian songwriter to be exclusively signed to EMI/KPM Music Library, producing reggae songs for use in film and television productions. Those songs continue to be active throughout the world in various media. In the seventies, Floyd founded Tropic Entertainment Ltd., a music publishing company that continues to see chart successes worldwide. His catalogue includes Justin Hinds, Lennie Hibbert, Ernest Ranglin, Ernie Smith, Kareem Baaqi, Deon Mattis, and himself and is administrated by Warner Basart in Europe.

Floyd recently performed at New York's foremost world music club, 'S.O.B.'s, and The Cooler on Manhattan's lower west-side. In February 1998, Floyd Lloyd opened the Roots Reggae Night at Sunsplash in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. He has toured extensively in Europe, playing at The Royal Abert Hall in London in 1984, and the infamous "Milky Way" in Amsterdam, as well as popular venues in Geneva, Pottsdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, and throughout England. His most recent appearance was in California and Oregon at Reggae On The River Festival where Ernest Ranglin and the legendary Cedric M. Brooks (tenor sax) joined forces with Floyd for acclaimed performances.

Product Description
Floyd Lloyd's latest dynamite release "OUR WORLD" with Ernest Ranglin is now out on the Tropic Entertainment label. This double CD is a wonderful mix of reggae, rocksteady and ska with jazzy brass overtones. It features the talents of bass man Mikey Chung, trombonists Vin Gordon and Rico Rodriguez, Jamaica's #1 drummer Derrick Stewart, percussionist Larry McDonald, New Orlean's trumpeter Tex Liuzza, and Hugh Francis and Eddie Grant's guitar playing on the rock-reggae song "You're For Real". Ernest Ranglin plays on all but a few of this abundant 33 track collection, co-writing and arranging several tracks with Floyd Lloyd.

The Mighty Diamonds' hit "Sweet Lady", written by Floyd in the eighties, is another bonus for fans who have followed his career. Cover versions include the standards, "I Get A Kick Out of You" and "Paper Moon", as well as the popular songs, "Let It Be Me", Van Morrison's "Moondance", and Colonel Abrams' "Trapped".

This is an album for serious collectors who appreciate the colorful and intricate arrangements of Floyd Lloyd, combined with Mr. Ranglin's renown and skilful guitar.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing album given the assembled talent.......1999-08-29

I had never heard of Floyd Lloyd but I bought the album based on my knowledge of the accompanying musicians. I figured that anybody who could get Ernest Ranglin, Rico Rodriguez, Mikey Chung, Larry McDonald, Dennis Bovell, Eddie "Tan Tan" Thorton and Eddie Grant to play on their album must be a significant talent. I was deeply disappointed at the result.

Although the musicians gave good performances and the sound quality is better than 95% of the reggae and ska albums I have heard, the album is spoiled by poor lyrics and terrible singing.

Mr. Lloyd should have allowed the musicians some room for improvisation and kept his mouth shut. This would have given us a work that could be compared with that of Jazz Jamaica, Ernest Ranglin or Rico Rodriguez. For the benefit of the public and his own record sales I would suggest that Mr. Lloyd remixes and reissues this as a dub album and withdraw the current product.
