DJ Khaled's getting by with a little help from his friends. A lot of them. The Miami deejay--whose runs the helm of a popular radio show on South Florida's urban-formatted WEDR--enlists a gaping host of collaborators on this follow-up to his 2006 debut, Listennn... the Album. His guests include Akon, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, T.I., Birdman, and Rick Ross, and that's just on lead single "We Takin' Over." Elsewhere, Young Jeezy and Juelz Santana drop in ("Brown Paper Bag"), as do Trick Daddy ("I'm So Hood"), Ja Rule ("New York"), and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony ("The Originators"). Even Jadakiss and The Game drop by for the ironically uplifting "I'm From the Ghetto," complete with proud children's chorus. Along the way, Khaled serves up alternating plates of melodramatic bass, happy-go-lucky piano riffs ("Before the Solution"), and Dade-county shout-outs. With its assortment of producers and often unwisely chosen song sequence, We the Best's missteps abound, but the album collects enough sticky beats and hooks to kept the heat cranked up like a proper night out in the 305. --Jason KirkCustomer Reviews:
Beat Novakane Indeed {2 ½ Stars}.......2007-07-19
The best songs on the album are the ones where Khaled abandons tries something different. Despite a hit and miss hook and Khaled's constant yapping, I found "Before The Solution" quite enjoyable after hearing Beanie Sigel unload over some dope production. "The Originators" is another interesting track that features Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. The problem with the good songs is that Khaled has to run his mouth for 45 seconds before the start of every song.
We The Best is actually one of the worst releases of 2007. It's generic, recycled material that anyone with even a little bit of common sense can see right through. Generic, thoughtless song titles, drugs, guns, jewels, lame rappers....I mean, this is straight up by the book factory rap. I see why he calls himself Beat Novakane now....my brain feels numb after hearing this. I recommend downloading the singles and steering clear of this sorry excuse for an album.

DJ Khaled - We The Best.......2007-06-20
Some say Khaled, Some say Khaled (Khaleed).......2007-06-16
In January, yeah that's right, January I heard the track "We Takin' Over". It featured TI, Akon, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Birdman and Lil Wayne. All of these artists, with the exception of Akon, were featured on Fat Joe's remix to "Make It Rain", so that is probably right around the same time when they made this track. Danja, who has co-produced pretty much anything Timbaland has worked on lately, produced the track which will still end up being the rap track for the summer unless you want to pop, lock and drop it for 3 months.
DJ Khaled's 2nd CD is entitled "We The Best" but it's pretty much "Listenn! The Album Volume 2". You get the same artists: Rick Ross, who delivers a decent intro this time around, Trick Daddy, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, Trina, Styles P., Young Jeezy and Bun B, who were all featured on "Listenn!". The only person missing is Pitbull who was featured on atleast 2 tracks last time around. The 2nd best track is "Brown Paper Bag" which features Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Lil Wayne and Dre of Cool & Dre. The track would be better if it wasn't for someone squealing "Broooown Paper Baaaag" on the hook (Tony Sunshine). I am not sure whose idea that was but they should have reconsidered their thoughts if they thought that was a nice hook. However, the Cool & Dre production and the artists' chemistry on the track will make you forget about the hook. "Before The Solution" features Beanie Sigel and is 1 of the 2 tracks that DJ Khaled produces on "We The Best". The other track is the Rick Ross featured "Intro". "Before The Solution" has Beanie Sigel bringing up several events like Jay-Z not showing up to visit him in prison, what's up with State Property, etc. The only problem is that Beanie is not talking about the topics 100% because he is supposedly saving the rest of the details for his new CD, "The Solution", like it's a sneak preview or something. The track is nice and so are Beanie's lyrics, you just will wish that Beanie presented everything in a different format. "I'm So Hood" features Trick Daddy, Rick Ross, T-Pain and Plies, who I originally heard on a track with Trick Daddy entitled "Duck Down" and who currently has the MTV Jam of the week with "Shawty", a track that features Plies with T-Pain on the hook. "I'm So Hood" is definitely in the top 5 on "We The Best" as all of the artists give good performances on the track from The Runners and T-Pain actually brings flavor from the track because he isn't in love with a stripper. "B**** I'm From Dade County" features Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross, Dre from Cool & Dre, Brisco, Flo rida and C-Ride. The track samples 2 lines that Trick Daddy had on "Born And Raised" and is actually a tight song. If it had been cut down by 2 minutes the track would have even been better. The Runners also produce "Hit Them Up" which features Bun-B, who definitely has a nice verse and Paul Wall. Bun B and his partner Pimp C (UGK) also has one of the best songs out right now with Outkast with the "International Player's Anthem".
There are other tracks that are worth listening to like "New York" which features Jadakiss, Fat Joe and Ja-Rule, yes that Ja-Rule and the bonus track "No Hook" which features Styles P., Cassidy, Jim Jones and Rob Cash and even Shareefa, who was a "Boss" and ready to not "Cry No More" earlier this year, represents on the bonus track, "The Streets", which also features Willie Northpole.
However, there are some tracks that you'll be trying to figure out or wonder to yourself Why? as well. First we have "I'm From The Ghetto" which features The Game, Jadakiss, Trick Daddy and I'll assume Tony Sunshine on a Cool & Dre track. The lyrics aren't that bad but the cheesy chorus has to go. Another thing that will turn you off is that the track is put into a Jaheim "Fabolous", we made it out of the ghetto type format. I tried listening to this track again to see if it would grow on me, but it didn't work. Next up, is Lil Wayne and Birdman on "S" On My Chest". Lil Wayne has made 2 Carter CDs and a nice mixtape with "Dedication 2". I expect better from him than this. He's becoming too much of a hit and miss rapper. The dope cuts are nice but the bad tracks aren't even average. Last and maybe least is "The Originators" with Bone Thugs N Harmony. At times, you get the BTNH of old and with this track you get the why are they even still rappin' stage. Fellas you have a new CD out called "Strength & Loyalty". However, this track will make you want to leave the CD on the shelf.
Overall, "We The Best" has its moments. However, with the quality of the artists, you just expect better. Some artists are featured on various tracks on this CD but they don't bring their "A" game on every track they are featured on. If you collect CDs like I do you may want certain songs so you should buy this. However, if you are looking for a CD that you can listen to 5 years from now you may want to leave this one on the rack.
P.S. How many times can you say "Listenn!!!" and "We The Best" on one CD, DJ Khaled? We get the point.

Intriguing Music Between East and West.......2007-02-09
The disc is nicely recorded as all of the Hesperion XXI recordings have been. My only wish would have been for more information about each of the works on the disc and it would have been interesting to know something about the seven instrumentalists who joined with Mr. Savall. What we have in the booklet is an overview by Jordi Savall that does not go too deeply into the music we are hearing. This aside, Orient-Occident is a disc not to be missed.
East meets West in an enticing program featuring one of the best Early Music ensembles around.......2006-10-15
Those who have followed Savall's previous releases will note that the composition of the ensemble is quite different on this recording. There is no vocalist accompaniment and wind participation is limited to a single transverse flute. But there are some rather distinctive additions here. Ensemble participants, on this recording, include ouds (Middle-Eastern lutes), an Afghan rubab (a lute with sympathetic strings), a santur (an Iranian dulcimer-like instrument), a wide variety of percussion instruments, and a vielle (played by Savall).
The program itself features alternating sequences of Eastern and Western compositions, illuminating the differences and similarities between the musical styles of such cultures. Some of the Western pieces are taken from the "Cantigas de Santa Maria" cycle or have their origins in the Istampittas of Medieval Italy. Some of the Eastern compositions were taken from a manuscript entitled "The Book of the Science of Music through Letters" written by the Ottoman musicologist Dimitrie Cantemir, while others were probably carried forward from a strong oral tradition.
My favorite Western compositions on the program include the lively Saltarello (Track 14) and the aggressive leaping melody of the Ductia (Track 2). While, on the other hand, my favorite Eastern compositions include the exotic Laili Djan (Track 7), the sensuous Mola Mamad Djan (Track 19) and the assertive, rhythmically-charged Turk melody, Makam Uzal Sakil 'Turna' (Track 21). Even though each composition can be designated with an "East" or "West" title, one of purposes in compiling this program was to show that the cultures and religions making their homes on the different sides of the Mediterranean were not always at odds with each other, and the exchange of ideas did take place. This exchange notably manifests itself through the fact that the first bowed instruments came from the East. Additionally, the melodies of Medieval Europe, filled with leaping intervals, ornamented phrases and syncopations, contain much in common with Eastern music. As an example, listen to the intricate melody of the Italian Istampitta: In Pro (Track 8). Throughout this program, the underlying beat of the darbouka, tambor and other percussion instruments serves as an unifying element between the East and West (the lively and virtuosic percussion playing on this recording deserves special mention).
As with Savall's previous releases, the playing, as well as the sound quality, is fantastic. Similar to the previous Hespèrion releases on Alia Vox, the disc is distinctively packaged within a tri-fold case, with picture laden program notes inserted in the front cover. In conclusion, this release is enthusiastically recommended to those who enjoy highly varied, and exciting early music programs; even to those who (think that they) have little or no interest in Eastern early music.

The often superficial relationship between Algeria's rai music and Jamaica's reggae is fleshed out by Khaled on Sahra, a CD named after his daughter. On 3 of the 12 tracks, he utilizes the cream of Jamaican studios and performers. The symbiosis is manifested most strongly on "Ouelli El Darek", which features no less than the I Threes, Mickey Chung, and Dean Fraser, among others, on a fine cross-cultural workout with Khaled at the top of his form. Elsewhere he picks out some of the best funksters and North African superstars, recording in Paris and Los Angeles with seven sets of producers, including Don Was, Philippe Heidel, Clive Hunt, and Akhenaton & Imhotep. Despite all these cooks, the stew holds together well with strong material and great performances, and echoes the international acceptance of rai music today--largely the result of Khaled's continued popularity at home and abroad. --Derek RathCustomer Reviews:

This CD documents an epochal 1998 performance by three Algerian singer-composers. Khaled is the undisputed king of rai, a rebellious, Western-influenced style spawned in the port city of Oran. As he was in constant danger from outraged Muslim fundamentalists, he fled to Paris. Later on, Rachid Taha formed a rock band called Carte de Sejour (Green Card), which addressed the concerns of downtrodden immigrant populations in France. Last but not least, the talented newcomer Faudel is often referred to as Khaled's heir apparent. The 13 tracks include such monster hits as "Didi," "N'ssi N'ssi," and "Chebba," plus "Aicha"--a bit of ear candy from Jean-Jacques Goldman--and the French pop chestnut "Comme le Habitude." This is easily one of the best-engineered live recordings ever made, capturing the empathy shared by the singers and a wildly enthusiastic audience while providing an indelible sense of time and place. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

This was the first "post-Cheb" Khaled recording, trimming down the Cheb Khaled name while beefing up his accessibility to the French, and soon American, pop music markets. Under the production wings of Don Was, the funk master, and Michael Brook, the mood maker, he expanded from the cheesy synth-and-drum machine sound of street level rai and made his first bid for international stardom. It's a mixed bag, with a few songs finding new turf for the gritty rai sound and mixing it up with some real American R&B. He tosses in some nice flamenco and Moroccan touches here and there, as well. Many others fail to capture either the raw energy of Algerian pop or Khaled's growing pop sophistication. --Louis GibsonCustomer Reviews:

Cheb (young) Khaled was a rebel in his day, an Algerian punk whose music blended racy lyrics with cheesy synths and drum machines in a sort of North African '80s techno. By the time he recorded this CD, he had dropped the Cheb and found that there was a whole world of sounds to choose from. Varying tracks were produced by Don Was and Phillipe Eidel. Eidel added a more lush, North African string orientation, while Was's tracks were pure-pop full of funky bass and R&B horns. Khaled's voice had matured as well, giving him assurance without losing that rebel edge. This recording had a lot of detractors when it came out, deriding it for being a betrayal of the rai "tradition." This is patently absurd, given that rai itself was only a generation old, and was created as a revolt against tradition. With N'ssi N'ssi, Khaled had grown, and so had his music. --Louis GibsonAlbum Details

One of the most nearly perfect albums I have heard in over four decades of eclectic listening.
I have little idea what Khaled is singing about, or what language or dialect he is singing it in - nor do I much care.
The voice is all you need. Add to that magnificent instrument
superb musicians, spot-on instrumentation, arrangements and production that fits each song like a glove and...what else is necessary to know?
Eleven splendidly varied songs that all groove, cook and flow into each other with an utterly dependable, danceable, intoxicating drive and sheer delight in being alive. It just keeps coming on. And you wish it will never stop. This is music that would make Sufis of the pathetic Taliban.

However, if all Khaled did was mix American funk production with traditional music, he would be just another good world music artist. But try to wrap your mind around a mélange of North African arab lyrics and insruments that incorporate funk, tango, jazz, and Mediterranean salsa, backed by a doumbec percussion, played by an airtight band that just locks every time.
I'm ready for the concert!

One of the best albums of the year.......2005-02-25
A rousing, exuberant expression of passion..........2004-11-16
Ya-Rayi, the latest album by Algerian maestro Khaled, does not immediately sound as if it belongs alongside them. The accompaniment is mostly loud and upfront, Khaled's exultant roar is undiminished, and on the surface sounds similar to his four million-selling albums since his international breakthrough in 1992. But in several respects Ya-Rayi is a return to the singer's early inspirations.
Born in Oran in Algeria in 1960, Khaled burst into popularity as a teenager in the late 1970s, when his cassettes were street-market bestsellers throughout the north African diaspora. As well as being a unique singer, Khaled was also a superb accordion player, and accordion is featured on several tracks here, sometimes played by Khaled himself, more often by co-producer Philip Eidel.
Khaled gave one of the best live concerts I ever attended, in 1994. It was the first and still the only time I have witnessed the entire audience at the Royal Festival Hall leap to its feet the moment the singer walked on stage, and keep dancing until he left it. As Khaled filled that big room with his voice, I was sure there could not be a better singer anywhere. He had everything: a rich, thick tone, infinite vocal flexibility and that indefinable, heartbreaking quality which no words can convey. He can hold a note for ever, or leap from one to another, his voice flying across the beats like an acrobat.
There are perils in having such a good voice, that so often trap pop singers like Mary J Blige and Mariah Carey, who convince themselves they do not need inherently good songs but can disguise half-baked ideas in pyrotechnics. Without understanding the literal meaning of Khaled's songs, we can hear that he always starts with meaning, melody and structure. On this album, most of the songs are credited to his wife, Sam Debbie, but they have the same virtues as those written by Khaled himself in the past.
French co-producer Eidel started collaborating with Khaled in 1992, and the two seem to draw the best out of each other, and Eidel's broad brushstroke arrangements fill the canvasses with drama or subtlety as the occasion demands. This is a rare album in which each track feels like the best so far until it is replaced by the next.
The mood shifts from elegiac to intense, Khaled swoops from a shout to a sigh, the accompaniment is a fiery horn section one moment, a swirling string section the next. The first song, 'Mani Hani', starts with piano. Not an electronic keyboard, but real piano - fluent, easy going, like the musician has all the time in the world. A hint of classical, a touch of jazz. Checking the credits, the player is Jewish pianist Maurice El Medioni, famous in Algeria before Khaled was born. One-by-one, acoustic guitar, percussion and accordion fill out the sound, and 90 seconds have passed before the voice enters, softer and more gentle than we are used to hearing it. It's a brave way to start, and gives fair warning that we should expect the unexpected.
The album's title track 'Ya-Rayi', is co-produced by Don Was, the American who produced the international hit single 'Didi' on Khaled's self-titled album in 1992. 'Ya-Rayi' is much less intense than 'Didi' was, offering Khaled the luxury of stretching out on a double-bed of voices and horns. Meanwhile, 'Zine Zina' marks the first time Khaled has worked with Jacob Desvarieux, one-time leader of the zouk group, Kassav, and it's fascinating to hear Khaled's typical phrasing work so well with the Antilles-tinged horns and backing vocalists. This irresistible call-to-dance is surely going to blast out in nightclubs throughout the world for the next year or so.
Khaled's first studio album since 1999 is a rousing, exuberant expression of passion by one of the great singers in the world today, at the height of his powers.
A true masterpiece!.......2004-10-15
While many people believe that Khaled's best asset is his voice, but I would like to add that there are only few singers out there that can convey emotions and passions in their voice like him. When you hear Khaled's voice blending perfectly with his unique music, special mystic feelings overcome you. Only a few artists like Khaled have the ability to touch you with their singing. In other words, it's not only Khaled's voice that haunts the listener, but also his ability to convey a genuine message of love, sadness, happiness, or neutrality. He could sing with Chinese music and you would still be impressed by his ability to blend genuinely with that music and produce an outstanding song. This guy was simply born to sing!
I think that this is one of Khaled's best albums. It's a one album that you must own and I'm sure that you'll love it like I did. Believe it or not, I had to order this album from the UK because I could not wait for it to be available in the USA. If you get the special edition, the DVD may help you to know more about Khaled's background and how he made his latest album. It has video clips for Aicha, Didi, and Abdel Kader live.

Born out of the cabarets, brothels, and bars in the seaside district of Oran in Algeria, raï is an Arabic musical reaction to rock & roll and disco. The differences are evident in the beat and lyrics, which are less polite and more sexual. While this collection culls 12 tracks from a time when the grassroots music was sold on cheap--and cheaply produced--cassettes, there are bright spots. Cheikha Remitti's more traditional sound is a welcome respite from the cheesier productions. Malik's "N Touma" uses samples to create a pleasantly edgy collage. The funkiest track comes from Cheba Nouria, whose "Consulat" boasts electro groove and a bit of reggae syncopation. Cheb Mami and Cheb Khaled tracks sound dated, but they provide enlightening and entertaining comparisons with both artists' more recent works. Though this is a fine overview of the music's early years, curious fans should explore more sophisticated recent efforts by the two gents. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Once again, the Rough Guide series has put together an excellent compilation. This is a perfect introduction to the genre, although I can't help but notice the absence of Rachid Taha.
