Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The magic of a long gone era........2002-11-28

Anyone who has seen the film of Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile" will recall the scene where Angela Lansbury, as Salome Otterbourne, drags David Niven, as Colonel Race, onto the dance floor and steers him through a tango. Anyone on a dance floor in the 1930s would be familiar with the tango; it provided opportunities for more flamboyant behaviour than did the regular fox trots and quick steps. A duple time dance, frequently in a minor key, with a strong dotted rhythm, it was believed to originate in Spain.

In Berlin, during the aberrant decades between the two world wars, the orchestras attached to the major hotels, nightclubs and cabarets included tangos in their repertoire. This CD gathers together 23 of them, recorded between 1926 and 1942. The items and the source recordings must now be extremely rare. Two, however, might be familiar by their English titles as "Serenade in the Night" and "Hear My Song, Violetta". They all come up sounding bright and colourful here.

My copy has English only notes, a full listing of track details, and biographical sketches of the directors of the orchestras - including Dajos Bela, Marek Weber, Barnabas von Geczy, and Will Glahé. Of course, their orchestras were not exclusively tango orchestras, as the CD's title suggests, but everything they committed to disk still carries some of the magic of that long gone era.
