5 out of 5 stars GREAT CELTIC MUSIC.......2007-08-05

Anuna

If the Celtic Woman group added men you'd get ANUNA. Not quite as good ,but pretty good. I'd give Celtic woman a 99 out of a 100 possible score and ANUNA a 95. Still well worth the money.

Highly recommended for fans of Celtic music.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing as always.......2007-07-29

I have been a huge fan of the Irish vocal group Anuna for over a decade. They have hit it big now with their niche audience when their PBS special begins to air around the nation. I believe they are such an amazing ensemble, that this acknowledgment of their work is long overdue! I wasn't sure if I should purchase their recording that is at Borders, as I already own all of their recordings. They are singing all of their great songs (although they have plenty, plenty more!) on this recording, and I didn't know if it was just a compilation their past albums. If you are unfamiliar with Anuna, their music really displays a whole spectrum of sound... from the ethereal to toe tapping rhythms, and it's all filled with soaring melody and rich and lush harmony-- some of which is modern, other parts which are a modern revival and reinterpretation of medieval sound.

So back to this album-- I did buy it yesterday, and I am so overjoyed as I'm listening to it, as this is a new recording of their PBS program material recorded at the same time as their TV special was, at a church in Cleveland, Ohio. The album was recorded separately, as there is no applause after the tracks. All of the pieces are approached with the same grandeur as their originals and there is no need to refresh the material, because it is truly timeless. They have added a couple of standards to appease the masses on this recording-- Greensleeves, as well as Scarborough Fair. John McGlynn (brother to Michael-- the group's director and composer extraordinaire) also includes one of his own beautiful songs, "If All She Has is You."

If they are coming to your town, go and hear them. They open their mouths and sound just as heavenly as they are on their recordings. It is stunning and breathtaking.

5 out of 5 stars Editorial Review.......2006-11-06

"The success of the New Age compilation Pure Moods in early 1997 led to the release of Celtic Moods later in the year. Like its predecessor, Celtic Moods is essentially a New Age collection -- here, Celtic is code for mystic. A few songs, such as the Waterboys' 'Strange Boat,' adhere to the earthy spirit of Irish folk, but much of the music -- including cuts by Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, Ashley MacIsaac, Sharon Shannon, Mary Black, Altan, Christy Moore and the Edge & Sinead O'Connor -- is atmospheric and ambient, evoking the mystical elements of Celtic music. In other words, if you're looking for true Irish folk, go elsewhere -- the [sic--this?] is New Age music with vaguely Celtic overtones, and if you are a fan of that style, there's no better compilation available than Celtic Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide"

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Moods is a good CD........2006-03-20

Celtic Moods is a really good CD. I like it alot. But then again I like anything IRISH. I've lost this CD a few times over the years and this is probably the 3rd time I had to buy the CD and I have no regrets. My favorite song on the CD is probably Ashley MacIsaacs Sleepy Maggie. Awesome song.

5 out of 5 stars Good CD to add to your Celtic Music Collection .......2005-09-28

I have this CD, and enjoy it everytime I get the change to hear it. I am a huge fan of Celtic music, and this is a perfect CD to add your Celtic music library. This is an album that all Celtic music fans should have. Other Celtic albums you should try out are : Scottish Moods, the Christian "Eden's Bridge" collection, and the Celtic music from Lifescapes at Target.

3 out of 5 stars Another Perspective.......2005-02-15

I have to hand it to the people who compile these CD's for keeping this one real. It is an unfortunate thing that "Celtic" culture has become associated with the New Age movement. Unfortunate because so often what is referred to as Celtic sometimes is so in name only, not to mention the fact that I can't tell people about my passion for it without getting some who roll their eyes. I am pleased to say though that aside from the packaging this is a collection that passes muster as it contains artists who are no less than the genuine article. Granted, Loreena McKennit is Canadian, but she has proven a strong dedication to the genre and when coupled with the likes of Paul Brady, well, let's just say his is a tide which lifts all boats. I recommend this along with any of the Celtic Twilight series as good introductions to this style of music.

Amazon.com essential recording

This gang of Scots broke a lot of barriers, paving the way for the overwrought synth pop of Enya that was just up the road. Hebridean vocalist Karen Matheson is the prize of this band, and this record is her shining moment. The disc opens with Matheson singing a traditional "waulking song," a thundering vocal piece with drums and a wash of keyboard. She is soulful on "The Fisherman's Dream," perhaps a bit too lush on Dick Gaughan's "Both Sides the Tweed," and delivers a piece of traditional "mouth music" with a modern gusto. Most of the instrumental tunes are more vibrant than their later recordings. Accordions, fiddles, whistles, recorders, guitars, and bouzoukis more than balance the occasionally overbearing electric bass and synthesizers, maintaining a lively contemporary feel and a traditional power. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An early Capercaillie shines here.......2005-12-02

Despite further successes, the best of Capercaillie lies in their early recordings. This one is no exception.

Now with new members Manus Lunny and John Saich, the skill level of guitar, bouzouki, and bass reaches new heights. You can especially notice this in the bass lines, as Saich's melodic bass lines give a new depth to Capercaillie's sound.

Of course, Karen Matheson, Donald Shaw, Charlie McKerron, and Marc Duff are in excellent form. Karen's voice really shines here as both Gaelic and English songs take center stage (Sidewaulk is the first Capercaillie album to have English songs as well as Gaelic songs).

With wonderful songs and impeccably performed tunes, how can you go wrong here?

3 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea, though others may enjoy it.......2002-12-04

Modernized Celtic music that follows in the path of early Clannad albums -- brisk instrumentals interspersed with glossier vocal numbers and a thumping electric bass or intrusive synthesizer here or there. Talented, it's true, but for the more traditionally-minded among us, this Scottish ensemble may be a hit-or-miss affair. They are more true to their roots on the instrumental numbers -- bad news for folk like me who prefer hearing songs. I'm also not terribly fond of vocalist Kathy Matheson... I guess I just don't like the timbre of her voice, or perhaps I'm just used to hearing a Hebrides accent in a rougher context. This early album is perhaps your best shot to size them up as a proper "trad" band.

5 out of 5 stars don't own it YET.......2001-05-08

I don't own "Sidewaulk" yet (that's why I'm ordering it), but the song "Fosgail an Dorus/Nighean Bhuaidh' Ruadh," track number six on this CD, is amazing! I have it on another CD, and I listen to it all the time! That song alone gives me the impression that Capercaillie is a wonderful group.

4 out of 5 stars A truly sublime recording.......1999-06-28

I was hooked on this album from the very first song, "Alasdair Mhic Cholla Ghasda" a beautiful, spinning reel. After that, the haunting "Fisherman's Dream" could almost sound like a country-western song. "Fosgail an Dorus" is another traditional gem that makes you want to get up and dance, and the album ends with the transcendent "Oh Mo Dhuthaich". Karen Matheson's crystalline vocals and the sprightly, joyful instrumentation make this a record that never gets old.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of mostly traditional Celtic material.......1999-04-02

When my wife and I returned from a delightful trip to Ireland a few years ago, I started looking for work by traditional Celtic bands to add to my CD collection. I have found three bands that rise above the rest - Altan, Deanta, and Capercaillie - and, while the members of all three bands are fine musicians, Capercaillie is blessed with the haunting voice of Karen Matheson. I have read some criticism about Capercaillie's forays into non-traditional work on their later albums and, indeed, there are two such songs on "Sidewaulk". Personally, I like the mixture. Like, many Capercaillie fans, I prefer the vocal tracks, but haven't heard many bands whose reels and jigs I like better.

4 out of 5 stars Crosswinds - Capercaillie.......2007-01-18

Good CD! Really like about 1/2 of the songs. Others are ok.

5 out of 5 stars Crosswinds.......2003-09-04

I bought this album back in 1987 direct from the band (and signed) at a gig in Wales, within three years I had worn out the vinyl, so I was unable to play it any more.
That should give you an idea of just how good this record is, many say that the early Capercaillie stuff is less honed than the their later stuff, but I think it has the rawness that the music needs to be shown off to it best.
The style is younger than the records they produce today, but they were younger, and we've all matured from 1987.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......2003-03-20

I first heard "Puirt A Beul/Snug In A Blanket" on a Green LInnet sampler album, and when it came on I just stopped what I was doing and said to myself, my God, that's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

I still feel the same way about that song, and for that matter, everything else on this early Capercaille album. If you're a fan of any Celtic music you simply must own this disk.

5 out of 5 stars Karen Matheson's voice will melt your heart.......1999-03-16

I will buy anything that lead singer Karen Matheson records, but the best is to be found on the early albums - Crosswinds, Sidewaulk, Delirium - which are predominantly traditional in character. Sean Connery is quote as saying that Matheson's voice has been "touched by God" and I couldn't agree more. The other members of the band provide perfect backing to Matheson's powerful ballads and show their great talent in rousing jigs and reels on the instrumental tracks. Capercaillie is a favorite of mine among the current crop - along with Altan and Deanta.

Not so hot. They have so many good tunes in stock, which were not used on this that I wonder what the reason was...this CD does not to me, offer the best of Capercaillie. IMHO

5 out of 5 stars Dè 's urrainn dhomh ràdh?.......2004-07-29

Cha bu mhath leam na h-òrain Shasannach, ach bha iad brèagha fhathast...agus na h-òrain Gàidhlig... ro-bhrèagha... uill, ceart gu leòr, chan urrainn dhaibh ro-bhrèagha a bhith! Chan eil seo gu h-uile rud, gu dearbh, ach tha mi ga mhailteann gu mòr! 'S "Ailein Duinn" as fheàrr leam; rinn Cairean Mhathanach gu h-àlainn leis; 's e Annag Chaimbeul a th'innte! Tuilleadh na Gàidhlige! Cùm a' Ghàidhlig beò!

Tha mi a' moladh an n-obair!

4 out of 5 stars Best of Capercallie.......2003-06-16

I was pleased overall with this cd--it took awhile to grow on me, since it was sort of "dated" in its sound, and because it is more in the "euro-technopop" category on some songs than true Celtic. However, the traditional stuff is wonderful, and I like their use of other world rhythms blended to create their unique sound. A good buy!

5 out of 5 stars Truly A "Best Of" Album.......2002-12-07

Having listened to Irish music for several years now I had bought but not bothered to listen to this particular Scottish band until recently. What a waste of several years! Like so many other reviewers have said I listen to this CD non-stop. I love each and every song and plan on getting more Capercaillie albums.

The cog that really makes Capercaillie work, I believe, is Karen Matheson's vocals. She sings equally well in Gaelic or English although I've read she prefers Gaelic. Her voice is stong and true yet she can put so much emotion into the words that you will be moved whether you understand what she is singing or not.

Of course the other band mambers are as important but I was especially pleased to discover an Irishman among the bunch (Manus Lunny) who's influence in some of the songs is unmistakable. It always helps, too, if an artist like Davy Spillane (Moving Hearts and solo artist) play uilleann pipes on a song or two. Another Irishman (and brother to Manus), Donal Lunny, helped Capercaillie produce an entire album from which songs like the beautiful but haunting "Breisleach (Live)" and the commentary "Waiting for the Wheel to Turn" came from.

"The Whinney Hills Jigs", "Kepplehall/25KTS" and "Dr MacPhail's Reel" are all instrumentals. The songs with English titles (except for "The Tree" and "In Exile") are sung in English and the rest are sung in Gaelic. While I don't know a lick of Gaelic, I still thoroughly enjoy the music and songs. If I ever become motivated to actually learn Gaelic (or at least Irish) I'll probably love this album even more -- if that's possible.

My very favorite songs are "Outlaws" and "Four Stone Walls" not only because of the upbeat music but also for the smart social remarks (and, of course, I can understand the words, LOL). And last, but not least, "Breisleach" for Karen's moving vocals.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Grace and Pride .......2006-08-07

Th anthology is a great selection of the music of Capercaillie - it may be the great voice of Karen Matheson - I just cant stop listening to it!!!

4 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2005-12-31

I've adored Capercaillie ever since I grabbed a handful of their early works in Edingurgh more than 10 years ago. I was hoping this one compilation would be the one I took wherever I went. But it's not. I'll still be hauling around 10 CDs. (Yeah, I need an MP3 player!) A few songs are better than the originals, more are less good. One--the lovely "Oh Mo Dhutaich"--is more than a minute shorter. "Stinging Rain" is torture, with its simple beat replacing the original beautiful orchestration. About a half of the tracks are jigs and reels--great at a ceilidh to dance to, but otherwise, well...The band's virtuosity is far better displayed on their tour de force "Grandfather Mountain." Many of my favorites didn't make the cut, and I sure can't tell why some others did. Now I'm waiting anxiously for the next CD, hoping this trend won't continue.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful vocals, some gems, some snoozers.......2006-12-29

I would have given this album 5 Stars, but I began to get bored about three quarters of the way through. So many great sounding vocalists and groups fall into this trap of "my audience wants this style of music, so...I give it and give it and give it." Give it a break, folks. Please if you're listening Capercaillie, work your magic on a wider variety of songs...get a little adventuresome! Listen to Loreena McKennitt for inspiration or something. This sounds unfair, because some of the music on this album is terrific, delightful and charming. But it's like the charming dinner guest who regails everyone with whimsical tales of his life in Kenya raising coffee beans. THe first two stories are fine. The next story is OK. But by the time he has told his 5th story about how locusts once again ruined his coffee beans...well...that's how you get everyone to go home early. Fans will love it, nonetheless, and I recommend it for anyone who deeply enjoys Celtic music and folksy, lovely classical vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Celtic-fusion.......2003-05-18

What an hugely excellent find for me. I just discovered this jewel (and the band for that matter) a little over a month ago, and this has become one of the biggest addictions in my music collection.

The band (on this album anyway) happens to make a humble amalgamation of Celtic, latin, folk and contemporary pop which is so addictive and irresistable due to it's high-melodic content, catchiness and the sweet, pure and virginal voice of lead singer Karen Matheson. The amalgamation is a nicely impressive and inexcessive blend, since it doesn't seem too extreme in either direction, but rather each form gently deflects off the other in quite a breezy and balanced way. To further enhance my point, it's quite impressive how ethereal, exotic and wispy the music is, but also how grounded, earthy and organic it is at the exact same time. The lyrics are sometimes sung in Gaelic, and others in English.

Overall, the musicianship is highly impressive, and there is literally not one bad track on this album. Also, out of all 48 minutes, there isn't a single one of them that doesn't feature an ear-pleasing melody. The album opens with "Rann Na Móna," which starts out with some breezy synthesizers, which are then fronted by Karen's wispy and soaring vocal. It then kicks into a tasty Celtic-pop fest, featuring one of the most addictive chorus' I've ever heard in music. "Waiting For The Wheel To Turn" is another addictive and melodic number. "Aodann Srath Bhain" is such a romantic beauty to listen to. A slow, mellow and airy song, it's one you can listen to over and over while you're looking out the window on a lonely, foggy morning - assuming your mood is close to that. Let Karen Matheson's voice soothe your soul.

Elsewhere, "You Will Rise Again" is a fine, melodic pop song which is great to sing along to, as it's inspirational as well, while "Kenny MacDonald's Jigs" is an addictive 'jig' with some kicking basslines and some nice accordion and fiddle. "Coisich, a Ruin" features some tasty and addictive Latin rhythms and percussion, fronted by some chantesque vocal harmonies, which give the track a spiritual aura. Excellent stuff. "Heart of The Highland" possibly plays out in a slow, peaceful 6/8 rhythm, while Karen Matheson sings nicely on the verses. The chorus' featuring those airy vocal harmonies, which mostly emulate major triads are so heavenly. One of the strongest tracks on the album. "Breisleach" is an all synthesizer and vocal track. Matheson shows off a bit of her vocal range on this track. Reminds me slightly of Enya. "Islay Ranter's Reels" is just simply a fun and addictive instrumental track, and "Servant To The Slave" is a beautiful contemporary pop song to close out the album. Once again, Karen's vocals on here are blissful.

This is excellent music of the highest order. Now, I have to look into getting more albums from this band. Please, don't pass this up if you like ethereal, organic, melodic and ear-pleasing music. It's quite criminal that this isn't too popular (here anyway.)

5 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL CD.......2003-03-14

This was the very first CD I have purchased by Capercaillie and I liked it so much I've purchased almost everyone of their following and previous CDs.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice CD to Revisit.......2002-12-14

This is one of the first Capercaillie CDs I bought and instantly fell in love with it. It's a wonderful CD to start out with, for it highlights many of the things that makes Capercaillie an amazing band: Karen Matheson's amazing voice and pure talent, the entertaining arrangements of jigs (and, again, talent of the band), and the band's writing ability, too. In comparison to the other CDs, in my opinion it's not the best, but it's still fabulous!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2002-07-20

I was first introduced to this band by way of the Putumayo Women of the World: Celtic CD (also excellent), and Capercaillie's work stood above the rest. As you may have read, Karen Matheson has a gorgeous voice that can be both ethereal and earthly. I had heard Delirium was their best album yet, and I knew several songs on it, so I got it. The first track, "Rann Na Móna" has wonderful energy and is a great start to the album. "Cape Breton Song" has a very mystical quality about it, and "Heart of the Highland" is warm and inviting. The instrumental pieces were good and even if you don't usually like instrumental pieces I think you will like these, especially "Islay Ranter's Reels". It is quick-paced and addictive and of course the fiddle and other instruments are played wonderfully. Of the slower songs, in my opinion "Dean Sàor An Spiórad" is best. It is a pleasant mix of Gaelic and English lyrics, as is the entire album. Perhaps the only song that disappointed me was "Waiting for the Wheel to Turn", as it seemed a bit slow, but that's probably because I first heard a live version of it which was much more energetic and inspiring. Anyway, I'd recommend this to anyone who likes Celtic music and even to those who don't, because it's among the best there is.

Amazon.com essential recording

Collected from the soundtracks to three independent films which aired on British television, The Blood Is Strong shows Capercaillie at their most traditional. These 25 tracks, written expressly for the films (entitled The Blood Is Strong, A Prince Among Islands, and Highlanders), call forth images of a verdant land and a remarkably rich culture. The documentaries explore Scottish history and current events, and the Capercaillie sound befittingly blends both old-world tradition with current trend, while eschewing the New Age trappings which make their music less enjoyable for a host of purists and folk fans. For this very reason, The Blood Is Strong, steeped in bagpipes, Gaelic language, and Celtic stringed instrumentation, will likely appeal to the widest variety of Capercaillie listeners. Singer Karen Matheson, described by Sean Connery (who narrates the final of the three films) as in possession of a voice "surely touched by the hand of God," has never sounded more lovely or self-assured. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars The Blood Is Strong Capercaillie.......2006-11-07

Celtic music at its best. Capercaillie is a fine example of mixing traditional music with a popular ensemble. We loved it!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Celtic album (so far!).......2006-07-08

I especially recommend tracks # 1, 3, 4, 7, 15, 19, 21, 23, and 25.

Indeed, as some have said, many of the songs and instrumentals don't have a traditional Celtic sound. Instead, these are more "mystical" in feeling - moody, meditative, spiritual.

My 5-star rating is for all the songs I love, not for the ones I don't like as much. Track 15 "Fear A Bhata" is worth the price of the album, IMO.

5 out of 5 stars The highlands are calling.......2005-04-21

This is my favourite Capercaillie, even though the material is mainly original not traditional. I do love their renditions of traditional music, but some of their later original music was certainly not as good as this. The music here is inspired, fresh and unaffected.

The Blood Is Strong is the soundtrack to a beautiful 3-part documentary on life in the highlands and islands of Scotland, and the music is like a magic carpet that takes you right there (believe me I know, I travelled around Scotland for 3 months, visiting many places in the documentary). This is evocative, plaintive and joyful Celtic music that hits the spot every time. Karen Matheson's young voice mellowed later, but here it just soars.

This re-issue also includes a wonderful 4-track EP that Capercaillie made for a short documentary on the Prince of Wales visit to Scotland, and a couple more extra tracks.

Yes it's different from later albums but it's essential Capercaillie. I never tire of this album, and my copy is now autographed!

2 out of 5 stars Certainly not their best........2004-07-07

This was the first Capercaille album I bought. I've since bought many others and love the band, not just Karen Matheson's vocals.

But this CD was a huge dissapointment. I'd heard some Capercaille songs on compilation CD's before I bought this, and chose this CD because it had a large number of tracks.

This is not the Capercaille I've grown to love. This CD isn't even what I'd call Celtic folk. There are about 3 or 4 decent songs on the album. But the rest are a mix of keyboards, synthesizers, and echoey voices. Strange, foreign, and altogether nothing like I expected.

If you are looking for a place to explore Gaelic folk music, I'll always recommend Capercaille. But try "From Dusk Till Dawn" instead. I also recommend the band Solas.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Addition.......2002-12-14

Warning: THIS IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER CAPERCAILLIE CD!!! This is, interestingly enough, the first one I bought, and it's wonderful; it managed to get me hooked on the band. But as a compilation of soundtracks, many of the tracks are short, transitional music; many are instrumental. The vocalised songs are nice, but showcase merely Karen's beautiful voice, not necessarily her magnificent talent. It's a wonderful addition to a complete Capercaillie collection, but not necessarily representative of the band's other offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album.......2006-09-14

This is one great album. It is a mixture of contemporary and traditional Celtic music and I highly recommend it. The more I play it, the more that I love it. The only place that I have heard Capercaillie is on XM radio and I think that they are a fantastic band. If you like Celtic music with a rock undertone, you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Required Purchase!!.......2003-10-16

Capercaillie is an outstanding group. They create wonderful blends of Traditional and Afri-Celt tunes. This particular CD is an inspiring collection including lyrics that illuminate the spirit and struggle of Scotland. Buy all the Capercaillie music you can get a hold of, but start with this one. After 5 years, it remains my favorite CD.

Add another very supportive vote. When a visitor comes to our home who is uninitiated to the wonders of Gaelic music, I whip out this CD and play "Breisleach" (Delirium) as an example of a calming love song and "Coisich a Ruin" (a.k.a. 'S Fluich an Oidhche) as an example of something lively. I must have more than 150 CDs with Celtic music of various sorts, but these are good ambassadors for it all. Another good pair for this is "Fhir a Bha\ta" and "Grandfather Mountain" from the "The Blood is Strong" CD.
Music like this saves my soul and my sanity some days after a hard day dealing with these "interesting times" we live in. I cannot put into words how the beauty of it transports me and touches my heart.
My eternal gratitude to Nick Freer, our ACGA Gaelic teacher from Alexandria, Virginia, who first recommended Capercaillie & Karen Matheson to me years ago. Mo\ran taing agus tapadh leat, a Neacail.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Funk is borne.......2002-01-18

The shift in approach and style between previous Capercaillie albums and Delirium is one of the most remarkable transformations in world music. While early recordings showed the band as an interesting but overly predictable and precious traditional celtic group, Delirium hits hard with a delightfully spontaneous blend of the prior elements with pop, funk, world and jazz overtones. For instance, the start of "Rann Na Mona", while stunningly beautiful, does recall Enya or Clannad doing Enya's style, but that quickly dissolves into a swirling skirmish of old and new. "Waiting for the Wheel to Turn" is a welcome statement about one of England's darker moments, that of the Clearances in which Scottish farmers were driven off their land and right out of their country to make way for grazing sheep, "Coisich a Ruin" and "Cape Breton Song" are both resurrected and revitalized works from centuries past. If the lyrics weren't enough, the music and Karen Matheson's voice are even better. The juxtaposition of moods and tempos is near perfect, but the many fine pieces stand well on their own too. There are the cracking instrumentals and wistful ballads as always, but the pop style tunes measure up in every way thanks to thoughtful subject matter and lyrics and strong melodies such as "Heart of the Highland", "You will rise again", and "Dean Saor An Spiorad". Even the closer, "Servant to the Slave", in a plodding almost progressive style that one might want to hate, is a welcome change of mood with which to wind down the project. While some bands take albums and years to break through from humble beginnings, Capercaillie did it all on Delirium, embracing their Scottish roots and then letting them soar.

5 out of 5 stars Delirium.......2001-09-21

This is the album I waited for 3 months (don't ask...). But it was worth waiting. Even if I would have been born much earlier and had to wait for Capercaillie to happen, it would have been worth waiting. Since I really enjoy in mouth music, Cape Breton Song became my favourite track. Brazen Donald Shaw is again political in his lyrics for Waiting for the Wheel to Turn, Dean Saor an Spiorad and Heart of the Highland, which makes Capercaillie pop-tracks far more interesting and bearable than those by, say, Clannad. Delirium is one of the best and most traditional albums by Capercaillie. They are, indeed, the heart of the Highlands.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring, beautiful sample of Celtic music........2000-05-25

Capercaillie's music is hard to describe -- the combination of heartfelt, poetic lyrics and sweeping, beautiful music is a rare find in music today. However, they pull it off, and do so consistently throughout the entire CD, whether the lyrics are in English ("You'll wake to a different drum / In a place to call your own / Your world is shaking but a day will come / for a dream to take you home") [from "You Will Rise Again"] or in Gaelic (just look at the title track, "Delirium"). Gaelic folk music is here, as well -- "Cape Breton Song", in various different forms, is still sung by workers in Nova Scotia today, according to an article I read, and is just one of five traditional songs on the album. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys Celtic music, and even to those who don't -- Capercaillie seems to do something that few others cannot, and that is transcend the genre to appeal to a much wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars Best ever Celtic CD.......2000-03-02

I really recommend this CD, which is the best ever to appear in any Celtic language. (I do have a knowledge of that particular field). The slow and beautiful songs of "Aodann Srath Bhàin" and "Breisleach" are reasons enough to buy this CD. It also contains lively, engaging song like "Coisich, a Rùin" and "Heart of Highland". If you only buy one Capercaillie CD, make sure it's this one.
