Yulduz Usmanova is from Uzbekistan, along the fabled Silk Road trade route in Central Asia. Her singing is a fusion of intricately coded styles, which includes borrowings from Turkish and Persian rhythms and scales. She is accompanied by the tanbur (a long-necked lute) and the doira (a hand drum) but often wields a wicked backbeat and sees no reason why she should not use the latest electronic percussion and synthesizers. She is a folk singer and a club diva, a Moslem woman who wears miniskirts and was elected to her country's parliament, and an international figure who resides in a rural area outside of Tashkent. Her elders admire her espousal of endangered folkways while young girls, emerging from the dual oppressions of Soviet life and religious fundamentalism, cherish her as a role model. Yulduz Usmanova is the best singer. I do not only admire her talents but also her personality. When i read the negative reviews about her personality, from Philadelfia i wondered who knows her personally so well there. Yes, i know she has a capricious personality and it is nothing for her to yell at some of her coworkers if she doesn't like something they do... i have been the evident of that many times in her concerts.
BUT, show me a perfect person?! Each one of us- human beings have both our pluses and minuses, and nobody, nothing is perfect. If you would know how much help and support she gives to others who need it, you would not think the way you do. Watch the "Azizim" show, by Yoshlar and you will see her worm heart, and even cry yourself. Many people dislike her because she tells the truth and is honest, maybe.
I admire her for her VERY big potential!!! She was born and grew up in a village, in a Muslim country, and proved everyone that it is possible to succeed, no matter what your background is. I grew up with listening to her every day. Now, i cannot imagine even a day without listening or at least mumbling her songs, that always make me think! As long as you understand the Uzbek language!!! Also I admire her patriotism towards her Motherland. It was obvious from her songs to understand that she is a potential politician. As for me, she is the BEST and the uniquest. There is noone who is similar, who has the same style. As for her personal life, God has given us success in one part of our lives, and has not, in another. NO matter what happened to her she never stopped, and never gave up. And that is how she achieved the success! I love you YULDUZ USMONOVA! You really have done a lot for Uzbekistan! I hope to hear you sing at my wedding:) !!!

I was at the Borders bookstore in my own world, looking for a few books, when something just turned my world upside down. It was the background music being played in the music section of the bookstore. I requested the store to get me the CD and unfortunately they never had another copy. The song being played was Dunya Dunya...Yulduz has a gifted voice. The depth, the passion, the serenity, the calmness, the rise and fall, the vivaciousness, the vigor and the sadness at times can easily drive a peaceful person into the realm of complete tranquility and desire. In short, I was immensely moved by her album. I cannot point out one number from any of her albums. Each song brings a different mood as well as sentiment with it. It's a pure delight to listen to a young woman who holds in her so many different facets of life and is able to express all of them in such an effective and beautiful manner. I was thankful to God for making me run into her heavenly voice and songs. I would strongly recommend her CDs. Lastly, I must mention that a singer or an artist must be judged by their talent in that area and not by the choices they make and have made in life. It's unfair to judge them otherwise. The last reviewer's comments made me write my sentiments on this matter.

Each time I listen to Alma Alma I am amazed at the richness and wonder of this collection of songs by Yulduz Usmanova. The vocal and instrumental skill of the singer and her co-performers are evident throughout the album, as they deliver a rich musical feast for us all to revel in.

Central Asian tradition goes high-voltage electric.......1998-11-19

Yulduz Usmanova is incredible. This album inspired me to "do my homework" by listening to some folk and classical music from Uzbekistan. She has been faithful to that tradition, while at the same time creating powerful rock. ("Schoch va Gado" reminds me vividly of Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane circa 1968, though there couldn't be a connection.)

This is passionate music, but not gentle. "Tsche Mischod" might be a forlorn love ballad (wish I could understand the words!) but it radiates toughness, even fierceness. That quality is even more evident in fast-paced songs like "Jeli Jeli" or "Kisil Alma". Overall, a superb CD.

Great mix of folk and pop--done excellently........1998-10-02

I listen to this cd nearly every day! And still have never gotten tired of it. It is very catching & every tune on the cd has a great "hook." It is heaped with passion and emotion. Highly recommend it! She is very unique--not really like anyone else--but great rock! WOW!

I really love this CD. Recommend it to others too. Especially the words are rich of meaning and wisdom. The music is great as well; the words are in the Uzbek language. But the musics are capable of penetrating the heart of any human being regardless of his/her nationality.

SongsThat Stop Your Heart.......2004-02-24

"Schock va Gado" the lead track on this album is reason enough to own this CD. It will stop the clock in the room you are in. It will bring your deepest questions to your mind's surface and somehow ease them into answers. I heard it five years ago while in London at a friend's apartment and have been hunting for it ever since. (I even went to an Uzbekistani hair stylist in Manhattan several times hoping she'd remember to bring me a copy of her CD!--never changed my hairstyle so quickly or had my nails done so frequently in my life.) Finally, Yulduz is gaining sufficient popularity here in the West to appear on Amazon. Apparently, she's sold more records than Madonna (not many can say that!) world-wide, and that's motive enough to hear what the rest of the world is listening to. No material girl, though, her songs use lyrics of poets, echo the sounds of horses' hooves (remember--it's Uzebekhistan; now, picture all the horses!), and the tone of her voice moves into and under your skin. There's no need for translation, just a room to listen in.

Powerful lyrics.......2000-04-11

I am not a music fan. I do not ever feel like listening to music in the car. Yet, I was a radio producer in a previous life, and I came across this unique CD from Uzbekistan. I cannot help over and over listening to its powerful lyrics. Yulduz makes the world seem such a small and unimportant thing in the wider scheme of being an honest person. Everyone traverses this road called the life, and she says "The sultans and the beggars are equal on this road."

Yulduz's voice shines........2003-08-15

This was my first purchase from Uzbek diva Yulduz Usmanova, and I wasn't disappointed. Yulduz has an amazing voice which shines through on this album with catchy tunes like "Jeli-Jeli" or the poignant "Maida". Although all of the songs are in Uzbek, you need not understand it to experience this beautiful trip through the silk road. Yulduz's voice will appeal to anyone interested in ethnically flavored music/pop music.

Generally Good, but kind of uneven.......2004-05-31

Yulduz Usmanova has a nice mix of traditional Uzbek rythms and more modern techno-type stuff in her music. Most of the times she makes it work, although as someone who is not a fan of Tak Boom I have to say it's not a universal. Some interesting political commentary in this album, particularly given that she was in virtual exile from Uzbekistan for a while, then was invited back and is now a member of the Oliy Majlis.

For people who are unfamiliar with Central Asian music the mix of more Western sounds (even some English) with the traditional Uzbek instruments and sounds is an excellent introduction; far better than, say, heading straight into mugam music or a more hard-core Central Asian sound.

Is North America ready for Yulduz???.......2003-07-06

Yulduz is an amazing singer, full of energy, and truly a talented entertainer! Already quite popular in Europe (and especially Eastern Europe and her native Uzbekistan) I hope that her charm with capture the North American audience.

Tak Boom is probably the most popular song on this album. (I must admit that it is not MY favorite, but it is quite popular and does have a catchy little tune and beat!)

Take a chance and buy this CD, I think that you will enjoy it, and if not, at least you have exposed yourself to one of the most famous Uzbek modern artists....but I think that you will like it!
