Album Description

Music of Indonesia Selections from the 20-CD Series. Indonesia is a huge country, spread over hundreds of islands, encompassing peoples of many different languages, religions, and musical cultures. Fifteen tracks from the widely acclaimed 20-CD series Music of Indonesia have been selected to provide an exciting and varied introduction to musical styles from different parts of the country. From rowdy gamelan and xylophones to quiet night music for flute, from Christian church harmonies to dissonant part-singing, featuring brilliant performances on guitars, xylophones, gong rows, and brass bands, this anthology will delight both new listeners and those already familiar with the court gamelan of Java. All digitally recorded on location between 1990 and 1997. Recorded, produced, and annotated by Philip Yampolsky with the collaboration of the Indonesian Society for the Performing Arts, and funded by the Ford Foundation. 70 minutes, 20-page booklet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the most amazing albums in my collection.......2006-12-28

My exposure to Indonesian music was pretty much limited to the glories of the Gamelan until I bought this album. What an eye-opener! This one disc offers an awe-inspiring cross-section of the phenomenal diversity and beauty of Indonesian music.

On the strength of it, I eventually went back and bought about three quarters of the albums its tracks are drawn from.

Buy this disc and marvel at the near-endless variety of humankind's musical expression.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating musical tour.......2003-07-15

Having mostly heard gamelan music from Indonesia, I was dazzled by this collection of mostly non-gamelan styles. This is a great introduction to the Smithsonian Folkways series of recordings from Indonesia. Because the style and mood changes so much from song to song, it is not well-suited as background music. But if you listen to each song to find out what appeals to you, this is the best way to choose from among the 20-odd recordings on Folkways.

1 out of 5 stars some really bad music.......2002-10-01

a collection of mind numbingly bad music- maybe this stuff would appeal to music collectors or specialists but for the average listener such as myself it is the worse CD I own. There is a variety of music but most of it is repetitive and boring, like some bad recordings anthropology classes get to hear. Don't buy this if you are looking for something like the Rough Guides or Putumayo collections of international music.

5 out of 5 stars great music, great value.......2000-07-27

From one of the world's lesser known great musical traditions, this CD is a cornucopia of lesser known traditional and not so traditional Indonesian music, each one surprisingly different and original. Some of my favorite: the meditative "Padang Magek", crazy hybrid of "Stambul Bla" and the guitar (?) in "Sampeq Penihing" . I am sure the producer had a hard time choosing these 15 songs out of the original 20 CDs. A great valued CD, although now I can't help pondering to collect the whole set!

5 out of 5 stars great collection of balinese music.......2004-09-27

This is a good collection of Balinese music containing styles which are not often available.

It has the added benefit of being a project by the late David Baker. David Baker was perhaps the best recording engineer for jazz and a great guy. He gets a great sound on this set.

Album Description

Tembang Sunda: Classical Music from West Java is the first compact disk to be issued out of a larger body of recordings from Indonesia. It is a little known fact that Indonesia is the fourth largest country on Earth with a population approaching 200 million. It is the world's largest Islamic country, and it is Australia's nearest neighbor. Only ca. 100 km (60 miles) away from the northern tip of Australia, it is about as distant as Cuba is from the United States and what a distance that represents in real life...

Once again, the intrepid New Zealand producer/musician/composer David Parsons has made a significant contribution to the knowledge of a little known culture and its little known music. The booklet gives a detailed introduction into Java's contemporary culture (written by The New York Times journalist Barbara Crossette) as well as into the esoteric realm of Tembang Sunda/Cianjuran music in particular (written by eminent ethnomusicologist Andrew Weintraub). It is a landmark of world music and a unique achievement by an expert team of musicians, producers, engineers and writers; it continues Celestial Harmonies' tradition of long standing to enrich the catalogue with recordings from Southeast Asian countries which will play a significant role in the development of the 21st century but are nevertheless widely unknown and misunderstood in the West.

Album Description

Melodic gong ensembles and male singing with percussion are found throughout Sumatra. Two of each are heard here: West Sumatran talempong (in two contrasting forms): kulintang from Lampung, at the southern end of the island; the choral didong songs of the Gayo in Aceh; and Salawat dulang, competitive duet singing from west Sumatra that surprisingly uses popular songs as a vehicle for commenting on points of Islamic doctrine. 73 minutes. "Part of a monumental and enjoyable series....Documents gong music that has riffs as concise and propulsive as dance tracks."-New York Times

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better to see the show first.......2005-06-06

Yes, it is a stunning set of CD's, but having had the opportunity to see Asep live on two occasions on his recent tour of the UK, I would comment that you get a lot more out of the music having seen the show first. Listening to the CD's is sometimes hard work, as there is a large amount of dialogue and commentary, although this in itself is interesting, with the shouts of encouragement and even an advert or two thrown in! Then you get a snippet of great gamelan music, most of which are quite short, as they accompany the action.
There is of course a full translation but its in .pdf format and I found the story quite hard to follow.
Asep is an amazing guy, and to see the puppets in all their fine clothes and colors, to see them literally thrown to his assistant and the brilliant special effects - including blood, vomiting and hilarious slow-motion is an experience you will not forget.
Also remember the gamelan is not a "full" gamelan as in Javanese recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Music of a Rich Legacy.......2003-12-27

Wayang Golek puppet theater is among the World's most sophisticated and asthetically rich traditions. This is a live recording of Asep Sunandar, the the most popular dalang (puppeteer) in Sunda accompanied by his energetic troupe Giri Harja 3. Although these CD's include a lot of extraneous sound from the bustling audience, what you hear is an authentic performance of great beauty and grandeur. I strongly recommend this amazing recording to anyone who has an interest in the amazing culture of the Sundanese.

      Album Description

In the Banyuwangi region, located in the eastern end of Java, a vibrant and earthy musical genre called gandrung is performed. Never before issued on any recordings in the West, this tradition begins sometime around 9 p.m. and ends just before dawn. An unmarried female singer performs a beautiful suite of songs backed by a small ensemble of musicians who play violins, drums, and metal percussion. The male guests at this dance party pay money for the priviledge of dancing with this mesmerizing songstress. The suite is recorded here in a full performance by one of the music's finest living singers,Gadrung Temu. "...slow-boil gamelan grooves...ticktocking drum and gong rhythms stretch and recoil..." -- The Village Voice

More incomparable music from the islands of Indonesia is presented in Volume 15 of the Smithsonian Folkways series recorded and compiled by Philip Yampolsky. This series has been exposing the world (and even Indonesia itself) to a myriad of cultural and musical surprises from the country with the globe's third largest population. South Sulawesi's interest in foreign instruments gives this recording its unique perspective. Arabic lutes, European violins, and zithers are all brought together to create rather raucous string-band music that seems to both reflect Indonesian culture and deflect tradition. The featured instruments include kacapi, a zither that might be comparable to a mountain dulcimer. It is strummed in an open fashion, with noted strings playing the melody over a drone. Gambus is a lutelike instrument with heavy, muted strings plucked by the performer. Other tracks use the violin in a distinctly Indonesian fashion. Most of the tracks feature small groups of two or three players, usually just instruments and voice with no percussion. As with all CDs in this series, detailed and highly readable notes on the history, culture, and music are included. --Louis Gibson

        Album Description

Cultures along the Indonesian coast in South Sulawesi have adapted foreign string isntruments to Indonesian musical aesthetics. This event-oriented music (accompanied and instrumental) often accompanies acrobats and clowns performing at family celebrations and ceremonies. Both professional and informal duets, trios, or ensembles, play two-stringed lutes, lutes that probably originated in Arabia, violins, and zithers. 70 minutes. Recorded in South Sulawesi in 1996.

3 out of 5 stars Javanese court gamelan.......1999-11-10

I find this quite a "difficult" CD to listen to, not so good as the similar "Music of the kraton". However, it still has some very nice soft instrumental music with good examples of male singing. To me though, its similar to other gamelan CD's of court music - but still a valuable example.

Containing at least one absolutely perfect track, this exceptionally beautiful and eccentric album features older and more recent music found outside Java's capital. "Stambul Bila," from the modern repertoire, sounds both geographically specific and nearly universal at once. A solo trumpet that immediately suggests Mexican mariachi introduces a 3-D fabric of tempos played by a rigorously loose stratification of xylophones, drums, and gongs. Chinese violins and a flute flutter above and below, commenting and cajoling the male and female singers, who alternate verses. "A funny thing about trains," sings Mama Ong cryptically, "they're so long but there's no horse. A funny thing about my sweetheart," she continues. "He walks past again and again." The faux-Latin trumpet continues its festive air until a Hawaiian steel guitar suddenly drifts in like a dream of Nigerian juju music, elevating this wild interisland Dixieland-gamelan experience into sublimity for more than nine minutes. The rest of the album is nearly as great. --Richard Gehr

        Album Description

Gambang Kromong comes from a virtually invisible part of the capital of Indonesia that most people have forgotten. Both performers and audience for this music today live at the edges of Jakarta and in the towns and semi-rural areas beyond. The music is wonderfully disorienting. It combines Indonesian, Chinese, and sometimes European-derived instruments in musical styles, at times reminiscent of gamelan music and at other times recalls small-group jazz of the 1920s and 1930s. "Don't miss the modern stuff-- a Dixieland-gamelan head trip you have to hear..." -- The Village Voice

As a novice to Indonesian Music, I was blown away at the content of this album. Not only are the tracks superlative, but the liner notes and geographical information drew you in to a world of passion and prolific creativity. Onde-onde has been playing in my Java Media Player on loop mode.
