About the Artist
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Anton Fig is presently a member of the "CBS Orchestra" appearing nightly on 'Late Show with David Letterman' - a position he has held since 1986. During this tenure he has played with scores of great artists including Miles Davis, James Brown, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Winwood, Bonnie Raitt and Tony Bennett. The CBS Orchestra has backed up a host of artists in other venues such as Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, Little Richard and BB King at the closing ceremonies of the summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. They also backed Al Green, Gloria Estefan, In Sync and Eric Clapton for VH1's Save the Music concert at the White House. The CBS Orchestra is also the house band for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, playing with music's most influential personalities. Recently they were the backup band for the Concert for New York City where they performed with David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy, Macy Gray, and James Taylor.

Some of the many recordings Anton has made include selections with Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Kiss,Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Gary Moore, Spider, Ace Frehley, Joan Armatrading, Rosanne Cash, Joe Cocker, John Phillips, Warren Zevon, Sebastian Bach and Paul Butterfield.

As a freelance drummer Anton has also played live with Paul Simon, Booker and the MG's, The Thompson Twins at Live Aid, and played alongside Jim Keltner with Booker T and the MG's for Bob Dylans 30th Anniversary celebration.

Anton continues to be an in demand studio and live musician and is currently recording and composing for numerous projects.

Some Excellent Songs; Performances That Try One's Patience.......2004-07-16

I yield to no one in my respect and admiration for tenor Paul Sperry's service to contemporary American song-writing. I have heard him in live recitals more times that I can count because of this dedication to the furtherance of songs by American composers. He has commissioned and premièred innumerable songs from upwards of thirty American composers. Further, he has such excellent diction that he has served American poets as well, since one can understand almost everything he sings without reference to a printed text. Never blessed with a beautiful voice, he has managed his meager vocal endowment with brains, guts and art. The songs on this CD deserve to heard and one expects they might not have been heard at all if it weren't for Sperry's efforts. Still, the time has come for him to stop singing. The voice has of late become too much of a chore to listen to; he too often sings well under pitch especially in his upper range, and when singing above a mezzo-forte the voice too often becomes a squawl.

As to the music recorded here, some of the songs are really quite enjoyable and one can only hope that others will take them up. I'm sure that is Sperry's hope, too; he certainly has given his time, effort and money to promote this kind of music, including several recordings on the Albany label. On this disc I'd single out the witty songs of Daron Hagen, set to laugh-out-loud funny poems by Alice Wirth Gray. Sample text from 'Why We Have Cats': "That bitch, the woman/who lived next door,/took it on the lam/to Arizona and left/five cats...What did she think life was: a Learning Experience?" Hagen's music underlines the humor in tonal but unexpected harmonies. Libby Larsen's song cycle 'My Antonía,' gently set to words from the Willa Cather novel, traces changes in the landscape over a year's time. Sample: from 'Prairie Spring' - "The larks...singing straight at the sun." Paul Moravec's 'Vita Brevis,' set to lyrics of Wordsworth, James Agee, Yeats, Anonymous and Mr Moravec himself, illustrates the cycle's envoi by Carlyle, 'One life: a gleam of time between two eternities.' The music, to my ears, is a generic and unmemorable. Paul Cipullo's 'Another Reason Why I Don't Keep a Gun in the House,' to poems by the current U.S. poet laureate, Billy Collins, is set to delectable post-impressionist Rorem-esque music. Sperry underlines Collins's felicitous turns of phrase [e.g. in 'Flames,' about Smokey the Bear: 'He is sick of dispensing/warnings to the careless,/the half-wit camper,/the dumbbell hiker.'] which are mirrored slyly in Cipullo's accompaniment. In the cycle's title song, Cipullo unexpectedly and wittily quotes the Scherzo of Beethoven's First Symphony. Sperry is accompanied expertly at the piano in each song cycle by its composer, except for the Larsen cycle where the pianist is Margo Garrett.

In summary, buy this CD for the mostly worthwhile songs, and try to ignore the difficulties with Sperry's vocal estate.

A Desert Island CD.......2005-06-06

I was recently turned onto Figments by a friend and immediately bought it. What a great album - definately one of my 20 'desert island' faves. Cool songs, lush production and great performances make this really rewarding. Check out the 'hidden track' for a nice surprise. As a professional musician I admired the work but my girlfriend, who has no musical ability to speak of, loved it too - highly recommended!

Figments is a gem!.......2005-04-05

Although Anton is known primarily as a drummer, this album displays a whole other side to him. Beautiful production and compostions make this album appealing to people beyond the drummer genre. In fact Anton's drumming is somewhat understated here - a testimony to his ability to hold back and play what is right for the music. This album is packed with beautiful music and although it covers a few genres, all the styles hang together - with brilliant performances from guest stars Brian Wilson, Richie Havens, Ivan Neville, Ace Frehley, Sebastian Bach, Blondie Chaplin and host of great musicians. In my opinion this is a must listen CD!

Bland, Boring, Uneven... .......2005-01-17

I pretty much agree with what a reviewer wrote below: "For an album that's supposed to be about a drummer, the tracks display a surprising lack of imagination when it comes to percussion. What's worse, even though there really is no "theme" to the album, the Ace/Sebastian song sounds really out of place. Ace's solo is horrible to boot.

The only bright spot I can find is the varied vocal talent.

Don't buy this album if you are looking for new or exciting percussion."

CD by a Drummer that's not a Drummer's CD.......2004-05-28

On the upside the recording was executed beautifully. Very rich quality with tremendous depth. On the downside however, the songs were not interesting to me. I've seen Anton play and he has so much more to offer as a player than is conveyed here. Most of these tunes are slow to moderate tempo with no explosive quality. The effort reminds me of what Narada Michael Walden did in the 70s and 80s. A world class player delivers popish, moderately hip compositions that don't showcase the players' talents. The problem is that as pop tunes, these don't stand up and they aren't saved by great instrumental performances. Admittedly, I have a preconception that in the tradition of Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Omar Hakim, etc., recordings released by great drummers, ought to have standout drum performances. Anton is great, you should see him live.

This guy is a drummer?.......2003-09-22

I bought this CD because I am a 20+ year KISS fan, and Anton has been Ace Frehley's drummer on solo projects since Ace's first solo album in 1978. I wanted to see what else he was capable of, besides rock and what he does on Letterman. Also, Ace and Sebastian Bach appear on the album.

For an album that's supposed to be about a drummer, the tracks display a surprising lack of imagination when it comes to percussion. What's worse, even though there really is no "theme" to the album, the Ace/Sebastian song sounds really out of place. Ace's solo is horrible to boot.

The only bright spot I can find is the varied vocal talent.

Don't buy this album if you are looking for new or exciting percussion.

Very interesting Brazilian Jazz CD.......2006-09-01

Don Wilner is a good bassist based out of Miami, and this is a very intereseting recording that offers a good amount of Brazilian standards in a Jazz format (7 out of 11).

His guests here are:
