5 out of 5 stars Cream of the international crop!.......2004-08-19

This album represents a combination of two great things- the EMI label, and Savina Yannatou. Everything I've heard from EMI so far has been outstanding- quality music, fantastic recordings, quality packaging, etc. But back to Ms. Yannatou. She is a true gift to the music world, a musician's musician. Boasting a strong musical savvy, technical ability, familiarity with a number of genres and regional styles, and a haunting voice, she (with the amazing help of Primavera en Salonica, which she formed) has put together an album which is truly mind-blowing. SOme of the tracks are lilting and pristine (especially Fairy's Love Song, With the Moon I'm Walking) some are energetic, some are, for lack of better terms, strange (a friend, after hearing the album, said of some of the songs: "I didn't know the human voice could do that!") but always wonderful. An engaging trip through the Mediterranean and surrounding areas. If you're looking for something beautiful, here it is. If you're looking for something different, look no further. I know that many of the reviews on this site are exaggerated, and I may have indulged in a bit of hyperbole, but it's worth it.

Some tracks are mind blowing - quite unlike anything I've heard before. It's perfect for the early music/folk/jazz fan

5 out of 5 stars Meditarranean & Sephardic Musical Dreamscapes.......2003-09-09

Savina Yannatou & "Primavera en Salonica" provide unique interpretations and musical dreamscapes primarily from the Meditarranean, Spain, and the Middle East. Other lyrics & melodies on this CD originate from Bulgaria, the Hebrides, Guadalupe (Caribbean island), Provence, and an Italian Renaissance tune. Besides the voice, the music is skillfully improvised and interpreted on the oud, guitar, tamboura, kanoun, accordion, violin, nay, percussives and double bass.

It is Savina's voice that is most remembered, for it is incomparably beautiful. It is ethereal, evocative, and from a higher realm. My favorite selections are the ones which express soulful, passionate longing and nostalgia. It is the songs from Greece, Lebanon, and the Sephardic tunes which are most memorable and appealing to me. Especially spine-tingling & emotion-laden are the Greek traditional songs, "With the moon I am walking" from the island of Kalymnos and "I've told you and I say again" from Asia Minor. Two other selections which makes this CD such a magnificent treasure are the soul-searching hymns "Glory to the Word of G-d", from the Marionite tradition of Lebanon (lyrics in Aramaic) written in the 4th C. by St. Ephrem, and "Wa Habibi" ("Beloved"), from the Orthodox Arabs' Church, also in Lebanon. At times the music is infectious and playful, other times meditative and introspective, at times energetic and spiralling, other times haunting and spiritual. This CD will appeal to anyone who loves creative expression and exploration of traditional music which remains true to the original musical phrasing ... Erika Borsos (erikab93)

2 out of 5 stars Terra Nostra.......2003-09-05

I bought the CD (actually 2 of them, one for a friend), as a result of a National Public Radio Magazine article about Sevina (article complete with great music clps). BUT, when the CD arrived and I played it, I was greatly disappointed. This CD needs a National Geographic Label not a Popular Music Label. Savina offers outstanding ethnic and musical talent. Sevina's haunting mid-Eastern "replicas" of Enja and Fairuz are wonderful but there are only five or six tracks that could be used in a group appreciation (party) environment, these are eclipsed by a cacaphony of, probably ethnically accurate, but tooth and spine jarring interpretations of multi- ethnic sounds. Note the word sounds - not music. For 13 bucks it's a great listening experience but it's one of those CD's that you listen to once and then bury - unless you have a CD burner and can pick and copy the up the best five.

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world!!.......2003-04-06

Greece's Savina Yannatou is a free spirit, and you can tell that by how effortlessly and how carefree she interprets all these songs in this album, which is a live recording from Club Sfendona in Athens, some songs she just takes off and uses her voice like an instrument, at times the effect is startling and unsettling, and other times it is accentuating very well the flow of the songs. Savina's voice has no boundaries. The album starts with a greek lullaby-like song called "Me to feggari perpato" (i.e. "With the moon i walk"), it's a mellow yet dreamy piece, on the second song we go into a much more vibrant and energetic Bulgarian song "Ivan Na Donka Dumache", i absolutely love how the song climaxes and the music instruments lift you up! The third song is the beautiful "Fairy's Love Song" which is one of the best in the album as well, starting off all slowly yet having it's peaks at the end, truly mesmerizing. "Ballo Sardo" is a Sardinian song that was in her "Songs of the mediterranean" album and it gets the improv. treatment and it is sung faster than the album version which actually makes it even more interesting here. The 5th,8th,13th and 15th and 17th songs are collaborations with Lamia Bedioui a Tunisian vocalist who delivers a more eastern or arabic flavor to the mix. Some other highlights for me in this amazing album are also the Spehardic songs "Los Bilbilicos" "Jaco" and "Tres Hermanicas eran" which are very upbeat and the orchestration is literally perfect in my opinion, showcasing both Savina's high soprano abilities and also showing us the beautiful improvisational capabilities of her band. "Los Bilbilicos" plays like a beautiful belly dance eastern sounding song with Spanish lyrics that just made me wanna get up and start dancing. This is a MUST for any world music fan who wants to broaden their horizons with new and interesting world music. The CD (the greek version which i own) has translations to all the songs as well as well as beautiful pictures from Savina's appearances. Savina doesn't dissapoint. Needless to say i am taking a trip from Boston to New York City in mid April to go see her perform Live. I wouldn't miss her performance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just the best of the best........2006-02-08

From all the compilations of Maria Callas EMI has issued this is BY FAR the best one.

Unlike her studio recitals, unequal and mostly recorded when her voice was starting to decay, this live records take you back to the glorious early fifties when the young Callas was changing the history of opera forever.

The first 6 CD's are scenes from stage performances and the last 2 from recitals.

Chronollogically, this compilation starts with the legendary (and controversial) 1951 Mexico-City "Aida" and ends with the 1964 Covent Garden "Tosca" (when Callas' voice was just the shade of itself but at the peak of her dramatic skills).
Listen to the electrifying poetry of the 1952 "La sonnambula", to the devorating flame of 1955 "La traviata" and "Lucia". Not to forget the 1952 "Norma", the 1957 "Ana Bolena" and some rarities like "Andrea Chénier", "Ifigenia in Tauride" and "Poliuto".
The only great absent of this collection is "Armida"...

As for the the 2 recital CD's, the first one contains arias from concerts between 1952 and 1958, when Callas was in full command of her voice. Nobody else was capable of singing arias from Nabucco and Lakmé on the same recital! And listen to the last aria: Wagner's Isolde's dead.

The second one, contains arias from 1959 to 1963. Here, Callas voice had diminished considerably and she was not anymore capable of the same technical miracles, but she still managed to give thrilling dramatical interpretations (listen to the dead scene of Madama Butterfly of the 1963 Paris recital!!!)

In 80% of this compilation you can hear the young Callas creating her own legend, giving herself completly on the stage.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07

This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

5 out of 5 stars A Funny side we dont hear often.......2005-11-07

Callas is so associated with her roles of tragic women such as Norma, Lucia ,Violeta and Tosca that her talent for other roles are overshadowed. The La Divina is so versatile and talented that people almost forget that she is equally good in tragic and light comedy roles. The light and comic side of Callas is not often revealed. This recording proves that the charming and witty music that suites the character of Fiorilla is suited for the great talent of Maria Callas .The other performers in this recording did a superb job in their performances. Selim is a charm, Nicolai Gedda shows youth, and Stabile creates an impression in his role as Prosdocimo. Overall this is the Best Il turco in Italia among the three versions I have heard. So for Callas fans who want to hear the other side of Callas purchase this recording its worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and surprising Callas.......2005-08-13

I have been looking for this CD for a long time. I had an old set in tape format. When EMI first remastered this performance in CD, it was very expensive for me at the time. This performance goes in and out of production, I guess it does not sell well, which it is a shame, because these are superb performances from all the principals and supporting cast.

This recording is a joy to listen to. Who knew that all these singers known for their powerful dramatic performances in heavy hitters such as Bellini's "Norma" could be such great comedians. Their performances are a feast for the ears.

My most favorite scene is from Disc 1 tracks 18 to 21. It is hilarious to hear Callas singing the crafty Fiorilla, playing the "offended" wife to her husband's attempts to rein in her roving eye!. When she sings "No mia vita...mio tesoro" (No my darling... my treasure) with such fake sticky-honeyed-tongue,you can HEAR her fake tears. Callas subtly overplays her singing from such roles as Elvira and Medea in this very small scene alone. She does it with such mastery, you can hear the musical threads of Elvira from "Qui la voce" in Fiorilla's "voi crudele!... mi fatte oltraggio! mi offendete!" (you cruel one!, you humilliate me!, you offend me!) in such pitiable tones that her husband bids good-bye to his courage after listening to such demonstrations of wounded dignity and pride.

She sings her fake tears in such a way, that, for a moment you feel sorry for this wronged woman! then, through a subtle change in the shading of the notes, you realize, she's faking them! thorough the music, you can picture Fiorilla, looking thorough her fingers at her husband, pouring it on, laying it on thick, watching the effect her "tears" are having on the poor chap.

When he kneels at her feet defeated, begging forgiveness, she rounds on him with such a Medea-esque fury in "ed ossate minnaciarmi! maltratarmi, spaventarmi! (and you dare to threaten me, mistreat me, scare me!) that the unhappy, innocent, unsuspecting, antler-addled man has no idea how he lost the argument!!. When Fiorilla knows she's won, you can hear again on her music, how blythely, happily and carefree, she goes out enjoying her power. I replay this scene over and over. And along with her husband, I am caught unaware and became dumbstruck by her tears and her fury.

My other favorite scene is on track 28, when Fiorilla and Zaida have a fight. The have such a row, you cannot help but to picture these two women in an Italian open-air market, among the produce and fish stalls with those typical italian gestures, being dragged away from each other by their embarrased lovers hurling abuse at each other trying to have the last word.

If you want a more musical critique regarding this opera, John Ardoin's "The Callas Legacy" book is a superb source explaining Callas' musical genius. Ardoin will give you greater details on the music execution of the entire cast and interesting tidbits on one of the cast members, Aureliano Pertile.

The booklet that accompanies this set is very informative and in various languages. I love this set and hope that whoever listens to it will enjoy as much as I do. I wonder how Cecilia Bartoli's Turco would measure against Callas'. Although I love and admire Cecilia's ability to sing bel canto roles and her deft handling of Rossini's music, but, I'm afraid I know and love Callas's singing skills even more.

5 out of 5 stars So funny.......2004-06-13

This is proof that those who say that Callas couldn't sing happy or funny parts. Her Fiorilla is deliciously funny. Absolutely exquisite, a must!

5 out of 5 stars Deliciously funny!.......2004-01-28

I saw her live in this role... She was the funniest Fiorilla ever! An enchanting must for every operalover!

3 out of 5 stars Only for Callas lovers.......2001-06-15

Yes, this recording is only for Callas lovers, because she do so well her part in this ultra-cut recording. Rossi-Lemeni doesn't reach the power of Ramey, but Stabile print his personal and arcaic way of singing and doing comedy. But for Rossini lovers, this recording seems a "demo" or "sample" one, because there are parts in pieces or complete pieces which has been cut (it must be because there was not a critic edition of this opera). I'm disapointed of Rossini when I listened Il Turco (i didnt never heard this opera) but when i heard the Marriner and Chailly recording, I disapointed from Gavazzeni and La Scala. If this was recorded in the critical and complete edition, it was the definitive recording (the same appreciation applies for the Puritani, Barbiere, Sonnambula, Lucia, Norma, etc)

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind... My whole family enjoyed Terra Nostra!.......2004-08-10

I'am not a telenovela watcher... but after my mom start watching this soap ophera I couldn't resist but watch it with the rest of my family every night. The quality of acting and the quality of this musicians is overwelming... My skin gets 'bumpy' everytime I hear the main theme 'Tormento d' amore' this is definetly a piece of art you must have and experience!

    5 out of 5 stars This is a masterpiece.......2001-08-18

The songs in this CD are so touching that I feel like crying when I listen to some of them, specially the first and last ones. One of the best Brazilian singers show their wonderful voices in several popular Italian songs. This is a must-have CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Melodies.......2001-07-17

This CD is the best CD I have heard in quite a while. The music reminds of the novela, which was also terrific. It perfectly depicts the time period and Italian culture. The artists featured on this CD have angelic voices and the classical pieces are beautiful. It's a major triumph. Viva Italia!

    5 out of 5 stars o sole mia.......2001-06-21

I think this whole album as well as the soap opera, has been the best I've heard in years. I have worked in radion for 13 years, I do not remember even hearing such beautiful music. I will recommend this to everyone who enjoys classic music.

5 out of 5 stars This is an awesome soundtrack! Buy it; you won't regret it!.......2001-06-04

This soundtrack is for the Brazilian telenovela or soap opera hit, "Terra Nostra."

The music is splendid and compels you to listen to it over and over again. Most of the soundtrack is filled with traditional Italian songs such as "Malia," "O Sole Mio," "Luna Rossa," "Funiculi Funiculá," "Non ti Scordar di Me" and much more.

Various music artists, many of them internationally known, such as Caetano Veloso, Charlotte Church, Agnaldo Rayol, Sandy and Junior, Zizi Possi, Jerry Adriani, and many others perform the songs. If you are not familiar with any of the singers, you will definitely become one of their fans by the time you finish listening to the CD soundtrack, the first time around.

The musical director of "Terra Nostra" is talented violinist, Marcus Viana. He is also responsible for other novela soundtracks, such as "Xica," another Brazilian hit. Viana's personal work on the "Terra Nostra" CD soundtrack comes in the form of instrumental music. It is beautiful, joyous, haunting and aching - all sentiments of the novela.

For those who have seen the novela, "Terra Nostra," the music brings back good memories of a wonderful story. However, you don't have to be a fan of novelas, to enjoy this music.

The "Terra Nostra" CD soundtrack is enchanting and will touch your musical ear and soul.

Montserrat Caballé had one of the great voices, tonally radiant and technically amazing, able to spin the most ravishing pianissimos as well as effortless fortissimo high notes. This well-filled two-disc collection includes a good cross-section of her recordings from the 1970s and early 1980s when she was at her peak. That alone should send admirers of great singing into a feeding frenzy. The set's title selection, "Vissi d'arte" (from Puccini's Tosca), is done with such tonal beauty and refinement of detail as to silence any criticism about its being too slow. She's as magnificent in bel canto arias like those from Lucia di Lammermoor and the Norma duets, where she's Adalgisa to Joan Sutherland's Norma, as she is in verismo roles from La Gioconda and Andrea Chenier. This set makes a terrific starter pack for those who may not be familiar with Caballé's art, and it's a welcome addition to the collections of those who do. --Dan Davis

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best Caballe recital albums.......2005-04-28

Ditto to the other reviewers. I have lots of Caballe's recordings, and yet very little from my LP and CD collection was duplicated on this two-disc set. It is an absolute must-have for Caballe fans. She outdoes Callas for emotion in the Chernier aria, and she is simply spectacular in Salome's final scene, dazzlingly conducted by none other than Leonard Bernstein.

5 out of 5 stars A CLEAR, BEAUTIFUL, POWERFUL VOICE........2004-03-25

MONTSERRAT CABALLE POSSESES ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, POWERFUL,& UNFORGETTABLE VOICES IN OPERA, HERE WE FOUD THE BEST OF THE DECCA YEARS A VERY GOOD ALBUM, AND IF YOU WANT MORE ABOUT THE MARVELLOUS CABALLÈ (I`M SHURE YOU WILL) GO AND GET "THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION" (RCA YEARS), "THE VERY BEST OF MONTSERRAT CABALLE" (EMI/ANGEL YEARS) AND "ETERNAL CABALLE" A BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF SONGS AND OPERA ARIAS.
