5 out of 5 stars popular northern songs now updated.......2007-07-15

Singer and composer Cris Aflalo, 27 years old, is one of the big revelations of the moment in Brazilian music. Her premiere album, So Xerem, is dedicated to a project that involves an important revival for the Brazilian cultural setting and Cris' family. This recording is a collection of Cris' grandfather's (Xerem) music.

So Xerêm brings to the surface all the bequeathed musical talent of Xerêm. In order to carry out the project, Cris, the granddaughter of the composer, organized the family collection of pictures, compositions (from 1938 to 1969), letters, tape cassettes, graphic works, books, magazines and memories of the golden epoch of Brazilian radio. Cris' passion for the work of Xerêm began in stages, starting with learning the composition and ending in this public performance of the work.

By mixing into her grandfather's repertoire rhythms such as baião, coco, lamento and xote; Cris presents the northeastern roots (inherited from her grandmother), marked by the union of the traditions of the popular songs of the north with the urban references of long ago.

5 out of 5 stars A modern take on some old-school Brazilian pop.......2004-12-06

This is a nice new twist on an older style of Brazilian music... In Brazil, Aflalo is labeled as a "regional" artist, but her approach is much more modern than that implies, and world music fans across the globe may recognize this as a rich, resonant album, full of warm, gentle melodies and a rich musical heritage... Recommended!
