Not your mother's belly dance music from Kansas.......2005-08-24

This CD is targeted at a crossover audience of belly dance and Balkan music lovers. All pieces are instrumentals, mostly featuring a brass band (unlikely in any middle eastern belly dance music), clarinet, traditional folk instruments including violin and drums, and some backup by electric bass and keyboards. The selections have a tempo range--not all slow or fast.

The liner notes dreamily discuss the background of belly dance or Macedonian ethnic music in three languages without ever explaining how they might blend well for what's on this CD. So, you may ask still, how and why this? Balkan as well as middle eastern music owe a lot of their origins to the improvisational style of the Rom people that traveled those countries. Couples today often dance lively together gypsy-style for a ciftetelli (belly dance) to music such as this in the Balkans. Get this CD and celebrate a Balkan dance wiggle party with friends.

For a similar recording try the more lively CD "Authentic Belly Dance Music" (Legacy CD350) whose title belies that it is really Macedonian gypsy music. If you like Balkan brass band music I recommend selections by Boban Markovic or Kocani Orkestar. If your style is middle eastern cabaret belly dance then move on unless you are ready for something avant-garde. For that matter, how about a yet stranger belly dance to "Tequila" from the "Latin American Hits for Bellydance" CD by this same recording label?
