Dated, but still a classic!.......2005-01-28

Released in 1962, this was a collaboration, as it turned out, between one of Italy's finest songwriters of the past 50 years and one of Italy's finest film scorers...ever. Ennio Morricone went on to gain fame for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and other spaghetti westerns, along with The Mission, Cinema Paradiso and other great films. Gino has remained one of Italy's most revered and enduring stars and the songs on this set remain among his all-time favorites--romantic melodies, passionate and idealistic lyrics, and haunting arrangements. It all sounds a bit dated now, with its soaring violins and baroque trimmings, but I can remember reading a quotation from Paoli at the time. "I am the future of Italian popular music." Okay, I'm not absolutely sure he said that, but whatever. As far as I am concerned, forty plus years later, it is, for me, the absolute truth. If you doubt it, just listen to "Che Cosa C'e."
