5 out of 5 stars Watch that Key.......2007-08-01

I was talking to a friend about a song on that album, just to make sure it was on there I looked it over and there it was, so I thought I would like to get that album, but not at this time I must have tapped a key and before I knew it I had ordered the album, but I am glad I did, so I had to thank my hand for it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality.......2007-07-30

I am very pleased with this CD. I was not a big Elvis fan while he was alive, but I have discovered what an amazing talent he was. The CD is excellent, the sound exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis at his zenith.......2007-07-24

The crowning moment for the king of rock n roll came here. This concert represents Elvis' towering moment. His best 70s album, his greatest concert album, his best tv special, his greatest live performance. That does not mean it was down hill from here. There were great achievements that still lied ahead for him...but this moment captures Elvis at his absolute best. His voice was in full throttle on Steamroller Blues,You Gave Me A Mountain,My Way,I'll Remember You,It's Over and An American Trilogy. He knew exactly what he wanted from a song and was in full command of his talent. His ability to grab both a song and the listener are on full display during his rendentions of Welcome to my World and Something.See See Ryder,Burning Love and Suspicious Minds are classics and Elvis' versions of each during this concert might be their finest. This truly was the moment he had waited for.And he came thru...like he always did.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis At The Top Of His Game.......2007-03-10

I have always believed that the reason Elvis Presley attained the title of The King was because he was always at his very best when faced with a challenge that forced him to give of himself everything he had, if not more. ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE is a prime example of this.

Broadcast around the world on January 14, 1973, though not seen in America until April of that year, ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE really captures this towering figure of 20th century American pop culture at a pivotal time. He had rescued a career that was in danger of becoming extinct in 1968 with the Comeback Special; he repositioned himself on record with his 1969 Memphis and Nashville recordings; and his 1972 Madison Square Garden concerts were screamingly spectacular. And then came this.

Setting aside the bombast of the stage show itself (a product of his Las Vegas routine), the sheer magnitude of Elvis' talent by itself is a wonder to behold even today. He throws in not only the great stuff that had already made him a legend ("Hound Dog"; "Love Me"; "Blue Suede Shoes", etc.), but far newer material such as James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues" (which soon became one of the King's 106 Top 40 hits). He also touches on gospel material such as "You Gave Me A Mountain", and country classics such as "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"--all of these things being integral to that uniquely American musical animal called rock and roll. It doesn't hurt either that his band includes fine people like guitar master James Burton, one of the giants.

But for me, the high point of this album is one of the King's biggest latter-day showstoppers, namely "An American Trilogy", Mickey Newbury's adaptation of two Civil War anthems ("Dixie"; "Battle Hymn Of The Republic") and an African-American spiritual ("All My Trials"). He had already done it on his Madison Square Garden album of 1972 with great results, but here the effect is even more stirring and deeply heartfelt. This is a great example of American patriotism from the deep soil of our nation that will be remembered long after the post-9/11 bromides of Toby Keith and Darryl Worley are mercifully forgotten, and it is only fitting that it is Elvis who should be the one to carry it off. As would be part-and-parcel of many of his shows from here on out, the King concludes with that classic song from BLUE HAWAII, "Can't Help Falling In Love."

ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE would go on to be among the King's biggest-selling albums ever, reaching #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart in May 1973 and selling over one million copies. Unfortunately, it would also be the last time that Elvis would ever really be able to get a challenge of this magnitude. Without opportunities like this, though he didn't stop making great songs, the burning passion the world knew him for was replaced by a life of extreme excess that ended painfully and tragically with his untimely demise at the age of 42 on August 16, 1977 at his Graceland mansion.

But when one thinks of what the man was able to achieve during his lifetime, it is easier to put those excesses into a perspective that helps to destroy the image propagated by the tabloids. Elvis was the King, but in many important ways, he was a lot like us--flawed but human. And that comes shining through on this album, one of his greatest albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars For 'King' Lovers .......2007-02-14

If you grew up with and loved the "king," this is the ultimate. I listen to it over and over during car trips, and it's tremendous each time. His "American Trilogy" is a fantastic way to appreciate America.

Album Description

Kona, Hawaii: think lush natural landscapes, divine inspiration and kids with nothing to do except find the next rage and invent slicker ways to pick up girls. Add metal and rock/dancehall influences to Hawaiian spirit, humor and ridiculously good looks - and you got Pepper. "Give'n It" was originally recorded in late 1997 in the only studio that existed in Kona at the time. Pepper caught the attention of fans from all corners, particularly Volcom Entertainment. After packing up all their belongings and heading to California, Pepper scored dates with established artists like Born Jamericans, Shaggy, Eek-A-Mouse, Burning Spear, Pato Banton & Secret Hate, were featured on XBox and Transworld Surf & Snow games, and played an entire run on the Warped Tour 2001, paying their dues by building the stage and pumping their signature Kona-dub-rock into the hearts of fans from state to state. It is edgy, lush, rocking, melodic, innovative, heart-grabbing and a good ride. It is Pepper.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fun music, but not very original.......2006-12-15

I realize I'm giving this three stars and everyone else has given it five. You'll have to decide for yourself, but I think my score is more justified. Pepper is a fun band with a classic "feel-good" ska/reggae/punk sound ... like Sublime as others have noted. But if you are, or where, a Sublime fan you will ultimately find Pepper disappointing. Not because they are bad, in fact they are pretty fun, but because they never get beyond "fun." Sublime had a certain edge (mostly misogynistic), and unpredictability that Pepper lacks. Maybe with time they'll move past repetitive imitation and find something that makes them unique and interesting. I imagine there ought to be something unique about living and working in Kona?

Don't take all this as a negative review. As long as you don't expect too much (and who really expects a CD to change their life?), Pepper is a good listen. I recommend you try it if you enjoy Sublime and need something new to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure.......2006-03-29

I had never heard of Pepper until I was in Hawaii this last week and saw them at the Waikiki Shell with 311. They were an awesome band to see live, and if your looking for a sound that isn't blared all over the radio these guys are it. They do definetly remind me of Sublime, but with thier own Hawaiian twist. I recommend thier music to anyone. They should be on tour this summer with 311 so go and check them out.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know what you're missing.......2005-03-30

Pepper is one of the sickest bands out there. I finally got to see them in concert on Saturday the 26th. I have all their CD's but it was awesome to see them in concert. You WILL NOT be disappointed with Pepper.

5 out of 5 stars Darren.......2004-11-07

Ok ive heard some of they're stuff and ive read the editors description of Kona Hawaii, and seeing that ive been there hand have hung out with the locals of the town, its all very true. I am about to purchase this album because i really love the reggea scene that i saw while I was in Kona.

5 out of 5 stars Brad Nowell may be dead, but his musical influence lives on........2003-10-31

For everyone who was bummed when Sublime ended, your prayers have been answered. This band has a great sound to them and is similar to Sublime and Slightly stoopid. Keep an open mind and you'll find there is alot of music out there to enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Luau Music.......2007-05-15

Drew's Famous Party Music: Authentic Luau Aloha was GREAT. We used it for our luau and everyone loved the music. I highly recommend this CD for your laua.

1 out of 5 stars A complete waste of money.......2004-06-07

I throw a luau party every summer and thought this would be good to have, but it is unbearable. Truly, I don't know what they were thinking with this one - songs from Jamaica and the Bahamas on a Hawaiian Luau disc, and absolutely pathetic songs at that. It really does sound like a small child, playing poorly, on a piece of crap $5 keyboard. For God's sake, get a Makaha Sons cd, or even the "Lilo and Stitch" soundtrack instead.

1 out of 5 stars Just horrible.......2004-04-25

Don't waste your money on this CD. My mother-in-law bought it for me as a gift on return from honeymooning in Hawaii. I wish I had never opened it so that she could return it. It sounds like something Ross from Friends would invent on his Casio keyboard. I've tried to listen to it three times and have never been able to bear listening to the entire CD. Anyone want to buy it?

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2004-01-22

This album sounds like it was written and performed on a Casio keyboard one afternoon for a dare. I not sure what kind of Party he had in mind when writing it, but it will definately be useful if you need your guests to leave.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD.......2006-07-21

Just like the other CD i bought this one to go with my daughter Luau theme birthday party and i found this music to be pretty relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, it's the 101 Strings..........2006-07-14

This is a beautiful CD. Of course, some of the traditional Polynesian chants lose a little without pulsating drums, intoning by the natives and exotic rhythms. (And if you want some local color, get Henry Kapono's Evolution of Poi.) But that aside, this IS the Strings and it's delightful. And yes, there is no "r" in the Hawaiian alphabet, but "Moon over Manakoora" is especially soothing. (Sung by Dorothy Lamour in The Hurricane (1937) - awesome). Just relax and float.

4 out of 5 stars good mood music .......2005-10-16

There are basically three types of songs on this CD: the straight ahead Hawaiian style songs (the kind that make you think of a Hawaiian Punch commercial), then there are the Martin Denny-ish types of songs, complete with jungle animals in the background, and lastly, there are songs with exotic melodies done in a symphonic style, what you would expect to hear in a 101 Strings album. It's a fun CD to listen to.

1 out of 5 stars Hawaiian music from Canada.......2004-05-05

If you are looking to be transported to the South-Seas Paradise of Hawaii for an hour, then please don't buy this CD. I gave this CD the benefit of the doubt when I saw that it was made in Canada, and gave it a spin. Boy, was I disappointed. If you want good Hawaiian music buy IZ, Hawaiian Slack Key Masters, or many others CDs by talented Hawaiians. But don't buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise on a Disc.......2000-06-05

This is my absolute favorite Hawaiian CD. For one-hour, you are transported to the South-Seas Paradise of Hawaii. I wish there were more recordings like this available today.

      Album Description

This is the first Brothers Cazimero album in six years and there's much to say. They have outdone their previous material with innovative songwriting by both Robert & Roland and greats in the Hawaiian music world such as Ki'ope Raymond of "Lei Pikake" fame. This album is their best recording and finest suite of BRAND NEW recorded performances they've ever made. It speaks of both their confidence in their talent and their passion for Hawaiian music.

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11

Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.

Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.

Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.

Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04

God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.

As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.

Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03

Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!

5 out of 5 stars heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22

These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.

      1 out of 5 stars Be careful.......1999-09-14

Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.

      Album Description

Aloha loves a bit of everything (60's orchestral pop, prog rock, 20th century composers, iconic songwriters), but they don't dabble here and there. They meld it all to make their own, unmistakable noise on this, their fourth album. "Aloha makes warm, progressive rock with a dreamy, resonant aftertaste. The early Genesis-inspired four-piece has skillfully crafted an ambitious and intriguing fusion of pop, punk, and jazz rock" - CNN. "A perfect laser show soundtrack for the art school set" - Entertainment Weekly.

      5 out of 5 stars Prog-rock without the bombast.......2007-02-28

Who would have ever though that prog-rock would achieve an early 21st century revival in the form of the decades biggest indie rock? I would never have guessed that the bones of such forgotten dinosaurs as Yes, Queensryche, Electric Light Orchestra, and Genesis would be uncovered by those trendy (and impeccably dressed) kids of The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, and The Arcade Fire. Well, add one more to that list. They may not have the major label or the recognition of said bands but they don't have a problem writing songs as good, if not better, than their populous counterparts.

Aloha hail from my home town of Cleveland and I did have the pleasure of seeing them play live once. At the time their music struck me as confused with a few more ingredients than needed. I'll admit that I had read somewhere they were a post-hardcore band, which isn't the case. Pre- Some Echoes Aloha experimented heavily with improvisation which probably explained my reaction. Some Echoes is their shot at a more pop oriented album. This doesn't mean that every song is verse chorus verse, but it does sound more accessible than they did a year ago in Cleveland.

There are two things that make Aloha better than prog-rock. The first is the fact that they don't profit in bombast. While a band like Yes seemed determined to use every damn track a studio could provide, each instrument on Some Echoes moves the song forward and seems necessary to the structure of the song. The masturbatory instrumentals are non-existent. For example, if this happened to be the mid-seventies, the arpeggios that appear at the end of "Brace Your Face" would signal the beginning of a ten minute instrumental representing the fairies bringing in the morning dew. Aloha, however, uses them as means to bring the song to a comfortable close.

The second thing is that the lyrics are abstract and don't tell a story in the way that The Wall or Tommy or that forgotten masterpiece Kilroy Was Here. Such head-scratchers as a "pine cone tangled up in steel" (it makes sense when you realize what a monopine is) and "turn the lock with the hidden key" compliment the more conventional subject matter in "Ice Storming" and "Mountain." It could be argued that the more straight forward "Ice Storming" wouldn't resonate emotionally if it wasn't for the more difficult songs and lyrics.

This brings me to the best connection between prog-rock and Aloha. Prog-rock wasn't so much about songs as it was about albums. While each song on Some Echoes would sound great on its own, being a part of an album enhances their impact. In a world where technology has reinvigorated the single, it's nice to listen to a full album that feels stronger than the sum of its parts. Like a drive home from a restful vacation, by the time you reach the final notes on Some Echoes you look back and realize it was the perfect journey.

If you've seen a preview for some sort of meta-fiction film (think Adaptation or Stranger Than Fiction) then no doubt you've thought to yourself, "you know, parts of ELO's music was actually pretty damn catchy." Well, imagine if ELO had done away with their self-indulgence and decided they were musicians and not JRR Tolkein...that's Aloha.

4 out of 5 stars Aloha does it again!.......2006-04-21

Aloha is one of my favorite new bands- Most of what I've been listening to lately is their third release, Sugar. I haven't heard this whole new album yet, because I'm seeing them tonight and I'm going to buy it there, but i've heard clips of all the tracks and a few full ones- and let me tell you, this release doesn't disappoint! I was at first turned off by the new way they decided to record the vocals, but now that I'm past that I must say this is probably going to be better than their last release! seems they've taken on a slight more "indie" feel, and while that's not my thing they make up for it by getting a little more into their more progressive and jazz-influenced roots. and while nothing can top The Great Communicators (wow!), That's Your Fire or Sugar, this album is probably as close as they could've come without their old drummer. And the addition of organ was a great idea! I'm looking forward to really getting to know these songs, im sure this will be in my regular rotation in no time!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Phillip Glass!.......2005-05-07

For some time I have thought that Basil Poledouris's score for *Big Wednesday* was among the best in the genre. Unfortunately, fans of this work have had to make do with the so-so sound quality of the home video versions.

This CD was lovingly remastered from the original studio sessions. The sound quality is simply breathtaking. Even the DVD movie sound is only a pale shadow in comparison with this CD.

I was especially delighted by the alternate and extended arrangements, which include the original versions of pieces that had to be shortened and simplified to work in the movie.

The linear notes are extremely well-written and informative. I learned more about *Big Wednesday* from this CD than from any other source.

Kudos to Film Score Monthly for releasing such an important soundtrack in such a fine edition!
