It's no mean feat being the world's foremost crossover artist--a task that risks alienating two disparate audiences and everyone in between--but somebody had to do it, and Andrea Bocelli again walks that artistic tightrope with impressive deftness. The title may imply a casual intimacy (indeed, the singer admits to taking a more "hands-on" approach to the album's conception and production), but it's a collection that nonetheless continues to expand on the Italian tenor's ambitious internationalism. His collaboration "Sin Tu Amor" immerses his voice in the Gipsy Kings' own rich Iberian folk-pop fusion with compelling results, while "Where Love Goes" (a musical focal point of the film Lazarus Child), his English language duet with 11-year-old prodigy Holly Stell, achieves an almost liturgical grace. "Tu Ci Sei" (You Are There) continues in the romantic vein of his familiar theme "Con Te Partiro" (Time to Say Goodbye), while the single "Dell' Amore Non Si Sa" (With Love You Never Know) features Bocelli in a signature dramatic tour de force collaboration with arranger Mauro Malavasi, the accomplished producer of the singer's Romanza and Sogno albums. Bocelli's shrewd taste and vocal prowess here not only again redeem an oft-maligned genre, but elevate it considerably in the bargain. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
HOW DO YOU SAY,"WOW," IN ITALIAN?.......2007-06-22
A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD HEARD ANDREA DO, "CON TE PARTIRO," ON A PBS SPECIAL AND MY EYES FILLED WITH TEARS THAT ANY HUMAN COULD MAKE SUCH SOUNDS. I WAS ASTOUNDED; MORE ASTOUNDING, STILL, WAS TO HEAR THIS ALBUM AND FIND THAT HIS VOICE HAD ACTUALLY VASTLY IMPOVED OVER TIME. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? " CON TE..," PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE QUALITY OF THIS WORK; THE TRACKS ON THIS CD ARE PERFECT, FULL, RICH, AND MORE MOVING THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER HEARD. I HAVE HAD IT A WEEK, NOW, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE FOR VERY LONG, AND I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER. IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE I HAVE BEEN AFFECTED LIKE THIS BY ANY VOCAL CD. IF HE NEVER RECORDED AGAIN HE WOULD HAVE MADE A MARK ON THE WORLD OF AUDIO NEVER TO BE ERASED OR FORGOTTEN. WHAT A VOICE! WHAT SONGS! THE CUT, "LIBERTA," ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME WITH FEELINGS OF JOY AND MARVEL. I HAVE EVEN TAKEN UP STUDYING ITALIAN BECAUSE OF IT.
TREAT YOURSELF, AND A GOOD FRIEND, TO THE SOUNDS ON THIS CD. SIT AND WATCH A SUNSET WITH IT ON... I MEAN NOW!
Just buy it........2007-05-30

A new style from Andrea........2007-02-24
Un Nouvo Giorno stunned me the first time I heard it.It was so unlike anything I had heard from Andrea- very pop.But it soon grew on me.
Liberta is amazing.Very catchy and upbeat.
Sempre O Mai is my favorite. It keeps its tempo up and has the best of Andrea and pop.Great song.
So this album was really a double album with pop and classical songs interspersed.A good mix from the master.

In our age of widespread literacy, it's easy to forget that the vast majority of music that survives from the Middle Ages was, merely by virtue of being written down, the dominion of an elite minority. On their debut CD, the Italian ensemble Acantus (the first group other than the Tallis Scholars to record for the Gimell label) approaches medieval Italian devotional song from the angle of common Italian folk music rather than of the erudite plainchant and polyphony preserved in most medieval sources. The pieces selected include several examples of chant-based "simple polyphony" that seem clearly derived from improvisatory practices--in Acantus's convincing performances, the effect is something like the equivalent of the spontaneous harmonizations Americans might sing around a campfire. These musicians use medieval instruments in about half of the pieces--and that sparingly--but the effect is always well-considered and natural: even when, in a hymn praising the crucified Christ and the Holy Cross, they use bagpipes and tambourine, the effect is fervent and exciting, without the faint whiff of condescension that often appears when "classical" early-music groups use those instruments. It's probably a measure of Acantus's success at aiming to recapture the musical spirit of ordinary folk in medieval Italy that the one piece they include that survives today in the oral tradition (a hymn from Liguria) fits right in with the rest of the record. --Matthew Westphal

Tristan and Isolde meet Verdi.......2007-04-17
I'm giving this five stars, but for me it was a mixed bag.
At 83' 54", this Verdi Requiem (no filler) is about the same length as Robert Shaw's. But the tempo distribution couldn't be more different.
The Sanctus, to take the most obvious example, clocks in at 2' 23", probably the fastest ever. The opening Dies Irae chorus (and all subsequent appearances) is also taken at breakneck speed.
I really got the feeling that Barenboim doesn't like the chorus. The well-recorded brass (and they are excellent) often totally overwhelm the chorus. In the Tuba Mirum and Rex Tremendae, the basses are all but inaudible. And what's with the sudden accelerando right before the Lacrymosa? It's not in the score. Was Barenboim worried the chorus might run out of breath?
The solo passages, however, are all taken at relatively "normal" tempos allowing us, of course, to appreciate all their fine work. But then it seems it was planned that way.
The soloists certainly guaranteed maximum decibels for this performance. Alessandra Marc's signature role is Turandot (her Met debut role), and has also done numerous Aidas and Brunnhildes. Waltraud Meier recorded Isolde with Barenboim in 1993, about the time she did this CD. Placido Domingo, also known for his powerful voice, went on to record Tristan in 2004. Ferrucio Furlanetto, one of my favorite basses, has a mighty sound, not unlike like fellow Italian basso Ruggiero Raimondi.
The solo entrances in the Kyrie were absolutely glorious. Waltraud Meier is wonderful in Liber Scriptus; I definitely prefer her to Christa Ludwig and Marilyn Horne. Alessandra Marc has a funny tendency to use throaty pickups to her notes; this was very noticeable (and distracting) in Recordare.
Domingo recorded Verdi's Requiem with Bernstein in Feb 1970. His Ingemisco is pretty much the same after 23 years, with the exception that he doesn't go "wimpy" at "Inter oves locum praesta."
Furlanetto can do no wrong in my book. So his Confutatis was every bit the example of vocal prowess that I was expecting.
Domingo certainly demonstrated what a difference a tenor can make in the Offertorio. I thought the beginning of this movement was the best I've ever heard.
Things for the soloists weren't always great. The opening soprano-mezzo unison duet in Agnus Dei didn't sound in tune at all. And - horror of horrors! - Marc's high B flat in Libera me was quite flat.
The Chicago Symphony Chorus sounded quite splendid (when the orchestra wasn't blasting away at them). The "Te decet" in the beginning was very commanding and forceful; the altos sounded surprisingly "butch." All the Dies Irae's were totally electric. The Sanctus, at Barenboim's lightning tempo, became twice the virtuoso showpiece that it already was; the chorus handled it with fine control. In Libera Me, the chorus finally got a "breather." At the more conventional tempo, the choristers were allowed to show their stuff without worrying about making it to the finish line. They have a wonderful sound. Their chorus director Margaret Hillis (1921-98) deserves much congratulations.
As previous reviewers have noted, the recorded sound is first-rate. You will be greatly tempted to turn up your stereo for this one. Audiophiles will certainly enjoy the thunderous bass drum in the Dies Irae. The brass, as I've noted earlier, are recorded beautifully; hearing them is absolutely thrilling.
No texts or translations are provided. Liner notes include an essay by Phillip Huscher, who states: "Verdi was a man of grat spirituality...He was never an atheist - simply, as [Verdi's wife] Giuseppina put it, 'a very doubtful believer.'" There is also a highly laudatory bio of Barenboim.

Average performance.......2003-11-08
The Dallas Symphony plays the three orchestral tracks well, but they do nothing spectacular with the music. Puccini's early work, Preludio Sinfonico, is quite beautiful and is worth a listen. The contribution from the Dallas Symphony Chorus in the "Guerra, guerra" chorus from "Norma" and in "In questa reggia" from "Turandot" is excellent. Their enunciation of the text is exemplary. However, they could have been better in "Casta diva".
The featured soloist is soprano Alessandra Marc. She has a huge, darkly-hued voice that can be easily heard over the orchestra. I, however, find the timbre of her voice to be heavy and matronly. Her rapid vibrato, magnified by her voice's large size, is quite annoying. Her diction is not ideally clear. Her consonants need to be crisper. Her voice has the right color for singing "Casta diva", but her breath control needs more work. It was quite disconcerting to hear such a heavy voice negotiating the delicate bel canto lines of this aria. She smudges the chromatic scales in the aria. Her small contribution to the "Guerra, guerra" chorus is not sufficiently angry. She is completely out of her element in Anna Bolena's Mad Scene. Her voice is far too heavy for Anna Bolena. In the Mad Scene recitative and aria, her dramatic commitment is non-existent. In "Al dolce guidami", she manages several respectable trills, but the final series of ascending trills is beyond her technically. The requisite nostalgia in this aria is just not there. In Helena's great aria, Marc sings well and enunciates the German competently, but her consonants need work. She is a native speaker of the language, English being her second language. In "Give me my robe", she is quite fine. She completely identifies with Cleopatra's character and she sings the high notes very securely. Her English is intermittently intelligible. Her rendition of "Vissi d'arte" starts with a scooping of pitch and is uneven in quality, but nothing goes terribly wrong. "In questa reggia" is given a powerful account, but she and the conductor are not always together.
This disc is definitely not a failure, but Ms. Marc could have been better.
Mixed Bag.......2003-03-10
It is not an issue of my not liking the style, or some concept of Bel Canto that is a matter of opinion as with Fleming's recent disc, it's simply a matter of not singing the correct notes. She is a great singer and a great artist. So why then perform repertoire that is not really suited to her? This album would have been better with some Wagner, more Strauss, or some more American opera.
As for the Chorus in the Norma excerpts: they perform the dotted rhtythms in "Casta Diva" as if it were a strict march and it all sounds terribly unnatural asif they had been dilled to death by an overzealous chorusmaster.
To sum up: 3 or 4 fantastic tracks, 2 or 3 that are in my opinion an insult to the audience, and some well-played overtures to fil it out, if you like listening to overtures
