Not So Hot.......2007-04-05

I'm a huge French pop fan. Sylvie Vartan simply didn't have the canon of songs like France Gall's or Francoise Hardy's. Her singing was fair. Even Brigitte Bardot, who could barely sing, had top notch material written by Serge Gainsbourg. Sylvie's material, on this CD anyway, isn't so hot.

Sylvie at her best.......2006-09-06

This cd contains a collection of songs by Sylvia Vartan that cover the peak of her career, a bargain really. Some of the French music in the 60s was heavily influenced by the US scene and Sylvia Vartan was no exception. She was HUGE in France and still remembered - yet barely heard of here. In America we are more familiar with acting of her son Michael (Alias). More people should try out some of her singing and this cd is a great place to start. I highly recommend this collection and some of the songs included might become your favorites as well.

Lightweight sixties music in French.......2003-02-07

Nobody could claim that Bulgarian-born Sylvie Vartan is a classy singer, but she has had a very long career, much to the surprise of some of her critics. It would be very easy to pour scorn on her music, but there is room for all types of music in my collection and this is a great CD in its own way.

This collection contains a lot of covers of British and American songs translated into French, including What'd I say (Ray Charles), Bye bye love (Everly brothers), The locomotion (Little Eva), Rhythm of the rain, So long baby (Del Shannon), My whole world is falling down, The game of love (Wayne Fontana), Pretty woman (Roy Orbison), Sloop John B (Beach boys) and I can't help myself (Four tops).

There are also plenty of original songs, but this is not an album to get deeply serious about. It is sixties pop at its most lightweight - but there are times when this is just the kind of music I want to listen to.

Born in Bulgaria in 1944, Sylvie Vartan's music career has long been the object of ridicule. She has been accused of being an inferior performer who couldn't sing and only became famous because of her husband, fellow musician Johnny Hallyday. Even so, despite her critics, her career has enjoyed a curious longevity, still surviving to this day. In my opinion, this CD proves Sylvie's merit. Though nothing especially deep, the light, bubbly, bouncy rhythms are catchy, and rather amusing, something you can really tap your feet to. When you abandon all need for aesthetics and meaning and just let yourself have some fun, Sylvie Vartan actually becomes a real treat.

French Diva sings her best live on stage at the Olympia. The album is a Showcase, Sylvie Vartan has been entertaining the world with her Memorable singing for almost 4 decades. Her voice sounds beautiful (on this album) as it sounded back in the swinging 60's.

Beautiful Timeless Collection of a Number One Pop Singer........2001-09-08

Some singers or groups have their moment of success, a few hits during 2 or 3 years, and then they are forgotten or they remain in the nostalgia circuit always with the same songs.
Really true artists are those who have been able to succeed during decades no matter which is the current music style. There are many artists who appeared in the '60s , '70s and '80s and they are still on top today, all of them have already had ups and downs in their chart entries, they have learnt that they are consummated artists independently of the charts, they occupy a place of their own in the pop music world, and they are always there. That is the case of French singer Sylvie Vartan. This Anthology contains some French cover versions of American songs as well as Italian songs and French originals specially written for her. Sylvie Vartan's has a very wide vocal range. She shows her ability to sing early rock'n'roll tunes, dance, soft ballads, uptempo pop ballads, and she sings wonderfully everything. One of the most bizarre compilation you can buy regarding FRENCH music.In her young days, SYLVIE did a lot of covers of AMERICAN songs;sometimes quite fun to hear(EN ECOUTANT LA PLUIE,SHA LA LA),sometimes awful(L'HOMME EN NOIR having absolutely no relation to the original PRETTY WOMAN of ROY ORBINSON)In between were the hits conceived for her(LA PLUS BELLE POUR ALLER DANSER,COMME UN GARCON). This 3 cd collection has all the good stuff but unfortunally also some of the worst.It's a mixed bag ,so you've been warned.Now i hope that SYLVIE VARTAN doesn't read AMAZON critics, because i still like the best of her

Beautiful ballads and the Motown sound in French.......2001-08-09

Sylvie Vartan has a deep, very powerful voice, one of the best voices in contemporary music, which allows her to sing in many different styles. This CD contains French original beautiful ballads as Deux Mains, Par Amour Par Pitie, Un Enfant Sans Soleil, and some French versions of English songs which I enjoy very much: Donne Moi Ton Amour, a powerful version of Spencer Davies' Gimme Some Loving, Moi Je Dance (The Four Tops' Same Old Song) and other French versions of very well known Motown songs (Je N'Ai Pas Pus Resister - The Supremes' You Keep Me Hanging On ; Garde Moi Dans Ta Poche - The Four Tops' I Can't Help Myself), they are carefully produced and fully orchestrated. These facts, together with the charm of French language and the wonderful voice of Sylvie Vartan, make these catchy classic tunes sound specially attractive. Her approach is perhaps more pop than R&B, but she preserves the fresh freedom of the originals. Sylvie sounds completely R&B in a more recent CD ("Irresistiblement Sylvie"(1999)), in it she recorded in English a cover of Dusty Springfield 1969 (also 1994) smash hit Son Of A Preacher Man. Although I am generally more fond of uptempo songs, I must say that the last track Drole De Fille of "Sylvie Vartan-2'35 de Bonheur" is a very nice ballad, French version of Single Girl. The title track 2'35 De Bonheur, also a French original and a very sweet song, is very different from all the rest, with an air of old songs in The Mysstinguet style. The sound quality is excellent. It doesn't matter whether you understand French or not, you'll enjoy this CD.

Sylvie Vartan has one of the best voices in contemporary music, which can be appreciated since his 60s and 70s recordings (it is the case of this CD)to her most recent CDs "Sensible" and "Irrésistiblement". If you are fond of very good French music buy this, no doubt you'll enjoy it and you'll go on listening to it during years.

French music lovers will certainly delight with this gem. I waited anxiously for a CD release of this album, since my original LP had long been 'retired'. When a friend sent it to me from Japan, as a present, I came close to crying. No need to say anything about 'La Maritza', a song widely recognised as a classic. But it is valid to mention 'J'ai cache le soleil', 'Le silence', 'Deux bateaux', and last but not least, 'Une feuille d'or', songs that are not very well known by younger fans. Sylvie's performance of the songs is a caress to the ear and listening to this record I return to my carefree days as a young adult. An expensive CD, oh yes, but one which is worthy of its price.
