The modern-day traditional Jewish music revival is filled with artists exploring klezmer's Eastern-European roots, but you'll hear no clarinet and little violin on cantor/educator Richard Kaplan's Life Of The Worlds. Although these are traditional songs, there is a broad range of the Diaspora represented on his second album, including Afghani, Spanish, Moroccan, and Algerian traditions. Kaplan dives into the sacred and the secular, the prophetic and the exultant, finding commonalities amongst different tribes and fusing them together. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of an occasional flute, piano, and violin as well as Moroccan clay drums, oud, dumbek, and other pre-modern-era instruments, but the instrument at the center of each song is Kaplan's voice--his high baritone majestically soars, quavers with sensitivity, and rings out with joy. To hear him sing solo versions of traditional Niggiun is to hear a world-class master savor the multifaceted nuance of each note and transcend the concept of song, turning it into religion and high art. --Tad Hendrickson

      Album Description

A remarkable collection of vocal performances of Jewish sacred music from the Middle East, Andalusia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia - songs of exultation, longing, love, and Divine immanence - accompanied by an ensemble of masterful musicians.

Instruments include: oud, ney, kanun, Egyptian accordian, violin, mandolin, dumbek, doira, riqq, Yemenite can, tar, saz, clarinet, mey (Turkish duduk), tilinca (Rumanian shepherd's flute), piano, string bass, balaban (Klezmer drum set), cimbalom, and a chorus of voices.

Among many special songs, the CD features an 'eco-lament' (ecological lament) based on lament melodies for the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. It is called "Lament on the Destruction of the Garden of Eden" (Kinah Lekhurban Gan Eden), and updates the use of these tunes to mourn the wounding of our larger temple, Gaia - Mother Earth.

LIFE OF THE WORLDS contains 18 songs, 77 minutes of music, and contains a 32-page booklet which includes informative song descriptions; all texts are provided in transliteration, English translation, and in Hebrew or Yiddish.

This CD was three years in the making, and presents the first recordings in North America of several songs from the treasure-chest of Jewish sacred music.

        5 out of 5 stars A Rare Classic.......2002-09-19

A very interesting combination of classical Arabic music and religous Muslim chants that illustrate the connections and mutual influence. The voice of Sabri Moudallal, the chief Muazen of Aleppo is warm and wonderful and his mastery of maqamat and classical arabic music is out of this world. (Muazen: a person responsible for chanting the public call for prayer in a mousque).

The vocal improvisations are what Tarab is all about. Listening to this CD is addictive so it should come with a warning :-)

5 out of 5 stars Sabri Moudallal : pure joy, profane & sacred.......2000-09-01

Sabri Moudallal is undoubtedly one of the greatest renown Arab classical singers of the second half of the XXth century. Born in 1918 in Aleppo, he was still recording two years ago, at the venerable age of 80 ! I had the immense pleasure of attending a live performance of his in Cairo in 1997 and he sang with the power and conviction of eternal youth !

This new release of Sabri Moudallal's Aleppian ensemble, recorded live in Paris in 1994, offers the best of his art, both profane and sacred. Two long tracks feature beautiful suites of cheerful profane songs : three dawr-s on track 6 and three Aleppian qudud on track 10. These are reminiscent of some of the material of the 1998 Aleppian Music Room album. But here the live recording and the kamandja violin add something lacking on the Music Room album. Real fans of classical Arab music will also be glad to have the opportunity to compare two very different versions of the "same" song (Ya sakinina bi-qalbi), featured on both albums. Worth noticing among the 3 dawr-s featured here is the title "Ya mama shufi awam", which is simply delightful.

As for the sacred singing and music found on the last four tracks of the album, it compares to an earlier release by Ocora (Muezzins d'Alep): it is both as intense and moving. The song "Ahmad ya habibi", composed by Moudallal, is simply a dazzling explosion of joyful love and devotion.

Once again, the Institut du Monde Arabe has done a splendid job for which I am truly grateful. I strongly recommend this CD to all lovers of the great classical Arab musical tradition. Many music lovers less familiar with the Oriental tradition will also find delight in this CD. Those who know no other Arab music than the kind of Belly-dance music popular in the West will probably experience quite a cultural shock, comparable to the discovery of one of Beethoven's string-quartet by a kid raised on radio-friendly North American pop music...

5 out of 5 stars Pure tarab and ya salaam.......2000-08-31

Relax and listen to the traditional tarab and enjoy the sophisticated music of old days....The style is pure...uncontaminated and truly simple... It is pleasing to the mind and senses....This CD is the best i've ever heard while experiencing and enjoying the originality of Middle Eastern tarab....Much obliged to the artist for the enchantment and the ecstasy.

4 out of 5 stars Classical Turkish folk songs beautifully rendered.......2005-09-05

If you are unable to find this title it has been re-released as "Traditions of Turkey" by Arc Music (EUCD 1776).

Accompanied mainly by saz (long neck lute), the performances are beautiful and calming. Additional instruments that can be heard on some selections include the darbouka, def (single headed drums), and finger cymbols.

The liner notes include the lyrics and translations for the seven songs of love and lament. The first and last selections are lively and the only likely dances. The rest of the performances are arabesque and improvisational. If you love traditional Turkish chamber music this is for you. Aside from this CD, music of this sort is most likely found on a Turkish import recording.

4 out of 5 stars there's only one dynamite track, but..........2001-08-09

...DAMN it's a good one. The first selection, "Hudayda", if listened to at maximum volume, can make you literally want to ride around decapitating people. Whenever you're feeling bored or tired, just blast it over headphones, imagine yourself a nomad warrior or janissary, and feel your self-confidence explode through the top of your skull. I'm giving all 4 stars directly to that track, as all the others are rather uninteresting unless you have a special interest in the repertory.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of Middle Eastern dance music.......2004-09-14

If you are interested in Middle Eastern dance, this is a great CD. For one thing, the cuts range from about 6 minutes long to almost 11 minutes long, plenty of music for continuous dancing. The music features a lot of violin and is softer-sounding than a lot of Middle Eastern music you might be familiar with. The mysterious The Bride "Look at me!" is very much like what you might hear in a Moroccan restaurant, intricate rhythm, violin and is the dance wedding guests all do to fete the newly-married couple.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional music for traditional dance.......2000-12-30

Both instruments and musical style are perfect for re-creation of traditional-style Moroccan dances. No piece is shorter than four minutes, and the longest is ten minutes (ideal for "village" scenes). I'm fond of "Amul Koutchi" (Dear rag and bone man, please lets take everything and leave here), and the greeting dance also has a nice lilt to it. This is not the usual orchestra-with-big-drum-solo stereotype; those who explore dance ought to try this one.
