Critics may quibble over the creative roller coaster that's been Paul McCartney's post-Beatles solo career, but few can deny his status as one of rock's most buoyant live performers and consistent crowd pleasers. That drive to stake his claim onstage (said to be one of the factors that drove the Fabs to dissolution) energizes this otherwise largely backward-looking collection of performances from his 2002 world tour; fully two-thirds of the double-disc's 35 tracks hail from the Beatles catalog, with the rest slanted toward early solo-career standouts like "Jet," "Maybe I'm Amazed," and "My Love." But Mac and his focused backing quartet deliver them with a punchy edge and sense of abandon that's largely MIA on previous McCartney live releases. Other than pausing for tributes to his fallen comrades ("Here Today," a solo acoustic paean to John Lennon followed by a touching, ukulele-backed nod to George Harrison with "Something"), it's largely a rollicking career retrospective from a musician whose restless drive to perform invests this collection with something more than mere nostalgia. The singer who invoked Bach at 22 may still refuse to act his age, but here that's not a bad thing at all. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

A Very Good Live Set by Paul McCartney.......2007-06-15
"Back in the U.S. - Tour 2002" is not the first live album by McCartney. Here are some highlights:
* "Wings Across America": This was the only live album released under the Wings umbrella. It was released in 1976 and consists of a mix of McCartney's Beatles and post-Beatles material.
* "Tripping the Fantastic Live": A 1990 release that covers Beatles material through material done on 1989's "Flowers in the Dirt". It also consists of covers such as Fats Domino's "Aint that a Shame".
* "Unplugged": A 1991 live set of stripped-down, acoustic versions of McCartney's material as well as covers.
* "Paul is Live": A 1993 live album in support of his "Off the Ground" album. Mostly Beatles, McCartney solo material, and covers. There is very little Wings material here.
This is a terrific set. Here are 10 points to take from this set.
1.While the liner notes don't say it, I believe it is safe to assume that the material is taken from many nights throughout that 2002. For the most part - there is something magical about hearing a great performance on a single night captured on a collection. I find that taking live songs from different concerts on different nights, the flow is disrupted. You also don't get the opportunity to hear the CD as if it were the concert preventing you from getting the full experience. However, this collection does a nice job at getting as close to creating a single night experience as possible.
2.While the music is outstanding, I would have liked more in terms of dialogue with the audience. I've seen McCartney in concert and he really connects with the audience. It would have been nice to hear some of that in the collection.
3.I like how the collection starts with "Hello Goodbye" and ends with "Sgt Peppers/The End". These were almost the perfect "start" and "end" songs for this collection.
4.McCartney assembles a terrific band for this tour consisting of Rusty Anderson on guitars, Paul "Wix" Wickens on keyboards, Brian Ray on bass, and Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums. McCartney alternates between guitars, bass, and piano throughout the concert. The top-notch band really helps add to the electricity of the performance. Most notable is Laboriel Jr.'s performance on the drums. Laboriel Jr. might be the best drummer in the world that many people don't know about. His drums are thundering throughout the concert. On the final track "The End" he is completely worthy of the epic drum solo in that song. As much as I love Ringo Starr - Laboriel Jr. is the better drummer.
5.As mentioned, McCartney alternates between guitar, bass, and piano. McCartney - as he typically does will structure his concert around a guitar set, an acoustic (i.e "unplugged" set), and a piano/keyboard set. The best set is McCartney's piano/keyboard set that comes up at the end of the concert. I do admit, the acoustic set is a bit on the long side.
6.Perhaps the most interesting song is McCartney's "Ukulele" version of George Harrison's legendary Beatles contribution "Something". This is part of the acoustic set. Despite the stripped down version of the song, McCartney is able to convey the power and emotion that this song is so rich in.
7.There is a lot of material on here - 35 songs, but of course there is a lot of material missing. It is almost impossible to get everything on this collection. I would have liked to have seen "Flowers in the Dirt" material, but that is available on "Tripping the Fantastic Live". One could easily Monday Morning Quarterback and say they would want songs like "With a Little Luck", "Silly Love Songs", "Michelle", etc.
8-Other noteworthy performances on the collection are "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Live and Let Die", "Let Me Roll It", "The Fool on the Hill", "Back in the USSR", and "Eleanor Rigby". There are no bad songs on this collection - everything is quality.
9.If you haven't heard McCartney do "Hey Jude" live, you must hear it. McCartney creates a true performance in which he gets everyone in attendance involved. While the version on this album is not as good as the performance on the "Live in Red Square DVD", this version will still give you a good feel for how he gets the audience involved.
10.The liner notes consist of write-ups by McCartney and each of the band members reflecting on the tour. This is really good stuff.
Overall this is an extremely good collection by McCartney - and it might be the strongest one when compared to the other McCartney live collections that are out there. If you are looking to get hold of McCartney live material, this is the place to start.
The live show dilemma.......2007-03-19
The playlist on BACK IN THE U.S. is nothing less than spectacular; performances are better than competent-- McCartney is in good voice and the backup's right-on with their renderings of oh-so-familiar tunes. Paul's occasional lyric lapses are forgivable, and because of tight editing, crowd noise isn't much of a distraction. So what's wrong with this album?
Simply put: it's not all that easy to listen to, mainly due to a too-high volume level. Even gentle songs like "Yesterday," "Here, There And Everywhere," "Mother Nature's Son," "Eleanor Rigby" and "Fool On The Hill" are unpleasantly harsh because they're just TOO LOUD. And the supposed-to-be-loud songs are quite deafening.
Live albums invite such criticisms, and more. If the musicians choose to reinterpret old favorites, the cry of "Blasphemy! How dare they!" is heard, and if they remain as faithful to the studio tracks as possible, then the complaint is "you may as well stick with the originals." It's a no-win.
Being at a great live performance is exciting for the audience, yet a transcription of the same show rarely captures the acoustics, the feel or the mood. Such is the case here. To be fair, this is as fine a Paul McCartney live album as he's ever released. But that only means all of them are in some way flawed.

Great band feeling........2007-01-11
The band is extremely in harmony with the McCartney point of view.
Tracks are very similar to the original feeling.
I prefer the Wings and the McCartney discography that the Beatles discography and anyway this CD contains much Beatles songs than McCartney and Wings.
You can't loose "Jet", "Let me roll it", "Coming up" and more.
Superlatives!!!!!!!!!
Yes maybe the sound mix is not perfect - I'm not competent - but the spirit of the music there is in large quantity.
Superb performance.......2007-01-11
There are the obligatory Hey Jude, Let It Be, Live and Let Die, etc... along with enough songs that he'll probably only play once (Hello Goodbye, Lonely Road, Mother Nature's Son, Getting Better, Something,...) to make it all worthwhile.
Although McCartney is usually true to the original studio version, he mixes things up enough to make the concert interesting. "Something" on the ukelele, We Can Work it Out on a simple guitar, Carry that Weight on a plain piano, Sgt Pepper blended with the Abbey Road medley, etc...
The only "ouch" is Freedom, the If I Had A Hammer 9/11 sound-a-like which borders on painful.
On the other side of the equation, you have Lonely Road - a real sleeper. One of my favorites - I'm surprised it never really caught on.
And here is heresy: Can't Buy me Love and I Saw Her Standing There sound more exciting and vibrant than on the Beatles' studio album. Even My Love - unadulterated mush on the studio version - nearly sounds good as a result of McCartney's remarkable vocal gyrations.
People will listen to this concert 100 years from now and say "wow".

Album Description
In 2005 Dutch guitarist/composer/producer/Ayreon mainman, Arjen A. Lucassen released the debut album of his new band Stream Of Passion. The album, Embrace The Strom, was way more modern than his Rock Operas and had a more gothic metal approach. The album went into the Dutch charts and Stream Of Passion toured Europe in early 2006. The band performed seven of their own songs plus a fine collection of Arjen Lucassen´s Ayreon classics, like Computer Eyes, Valley of the Queens, The Castle Hall, a collection of Human Equation songs and many others. For the Ayreon material the band were supported by Damian Wilson, who originally appeared on many of the Ayreon albums. The double CD was recorded in Rijssen, Holland on the 17th February 2006.Customer Reviews:

Outstanding.......2006-05-05
I love the reviews that say "blah blah Neil" if you were a fan you would know its Neal ;-)
Yes Spock's 2.0 took some time getting used to afer all the years with NEAL at the helm. But I gotta admit my ears like what the boys are doing.
Good album.......2006-03-24
So what do I think of the CD? I think they play really tight and the recording is a very good one. They wisely avoid playing all but a few of the older numbers.
If you're a fan you need this album.
I Admit, I'm A Glutton!.......2006-02-02
Spock's Beard's Seconds Out.......2006-01-14
In the case of this recording, the songs performed from their last two recordings come off much better than the older SB tunes. The old tunes just have a hole where Neal should be. Neal wrote those songs taking into consideration his own keyboard and guitar parts. The songs sound hollow without them. By contrast, the newer songs were writen for a four piece band and sound very good recorded live.I wish they would have performed "A Guy named Sid" and left off "The Light".
Granted, Ryo does an outstanding job playing all the keyboard parts but on songs like "Harms Way" and "At the End of the Day" the layering of multiple keyboards and guitars is really missing.I am a bit disappointed by his solo. It puts you to sleep. Granted, it is very nice but come on Ryo, it's not a recital!
I'm not all that happy with the mix either. The vocals sound flat and lifeless. They should have added a "sweetening" and reverb to give the vocals a more live sound. The kick drum is too pervasive and the keyboards sound thin, when they really need to fill them out to make up for Neal.
While not a real barn burner, I am not heaving this CD entirely. It is a good snapshot of where the band is now. I am hoping the band continues to produce and perhaps the next live CD will be able to say goodbye to the old SB all together.
Very good preformance.......2005-11-29
Back to here. Back to the Gluttons For Punishment. I must first get out of the way, I am, will be, and have been critical of the new Spock's Beard. I'm not even remotely a fan of Feeling Enphoria or Octane. That said, I always preferred what Morse wrote, and his very voice, over the current Spock's Beard.
That said, this is a very, very good live album. I can't comment too much on the material from Octane, but the old Beard tracks, and Ghost of Autumn, are very well done. Nick's voice does it some justice. The Light is very good - and, as with any live progressive recording, I enjoy the improv pieces thrown into the songs. It is those that truely separate a live concert to listening to the album woth a CD player. You don't want to know whats next. Needless to say, this album has that.
I'm not going to go through all the songs, because you shouldn't know when one of these unique add-ons occur, but if you're a fan of Spock's Beard, at all, I recommend you pick this album up. It'll never live up to Neal Morse's days, but it's certainly a fitting tribute to the glorious days of Spock's Beard.

Good live album with mediocre sound.......2003-02-10
The musicianship on the album is very good. "Four Holes in the Ground" and "Celebration" are done very well, despite being played at an almost frantic speed. "Just Look Away" changes up the arrangement from the studio version, including a long intro by Franco Mussida on the most electrified acoustic guitar you're ever likely to hear, and a more powerful close. But the album's sound quality is mediocre at best, not as bad as the terrible bootleg quality of "A Celebration" and "10 Anni Live", but below average even by '70s standards (was "Waiting for Columbus" the ONLY well-recorded live album that decade?). About one-third of the album is taken up by "Alta Loma Five Till Nine", a 15-minute jam of guitar and violin solos that follows "Mr. Nine Till Five". It's played very well, but how much you like it will depend on how much you personally like long jamming solos--if that's what you like, add another star. After listening to PFM's most recent albums, I can't help but notice that all of the vocalists have improved a LOT since the 70s.
(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)
Contains PFM's greatest jam.......2000-02-22
On the plus side for "Live In USA": sound quality is a little better. On "10 Anni Live", there is a high pitched whine at the beginning of Alta Loma. There is also a great acoustic guitar solo that isn't available on "10 Anni Live".
My favorite number by PFM has always been Alta Loma. It has a great flow to it, starting with an impressive guitar solo and ending with the screaming violin solo. This version is very tight. Other versions, such as on "10 Anni Live" have an extra violin part that actually detracts from the tight flow.
On the down side: The annoying "Four Holes in the Ground" is freatured and you have to wade through Mr. Nine to Five to get to Alta Loma. These really aren't bad songs, but they are the bombastic, neo-classical type of songs that gave progressive music a bad name. But, the other other numbers and especially Alta Loma are enough to give it 5 stars.
Don't miss this one.......1999-09-18

Good, not their best... just like the other reviewer.......2005-08-24
But I thought they sounded a bit tired on the album, and I miss the original keyboard/guitar arrangements that worked well together on SMPTE.
But overall not a bad attempt! I believe this was their last album. Would have been interesting the Moarse man stayed on with these guys in this group and see what other wonderful material they would have brought out!
If you are a Transatlantic fan add it to your collection. Experince what they were like in concert on this CD because not many people had the chance too!
Some good songs, pretty cruddy singing.......2004-09-02
Good, but not their best.......2004-01-17
Its what makes a live album great and other thoughts.......2003-04-02
Sadly, with the exception of the soon to be released DVD, there will be no more TransAtlantic. Neal's decision to persue other musical avenues has ended this great collaberation. Grab this collection, grab SMPT:e, grab Bridge Across Forever.
The one thing you need to remember is that all of these albums were recorded over an incredibly brief period of time. SMPT:e was recorded in four separate studios with the players not really playing together until the Live in America shows. Bridge was recorded in a four days, with some tweaking after the fact.
These three albums are a testament to the creativity and talent of these four musicians. Don't let them fade away.
