Critics may quibble over the creative roller coaster that's been Paul McCartney's post-Beatles solo career, but few can deny his status as one of rock's most buoyant live performers and consistent crowd pleasers. That drive to stake his claim onstage (said to be one of the factors that drove the Fabs to dissolution) energizes this otherwise largely backward-looking collection of performances from his 2002 world tour; fully two-thirds of the double-disc's 35 tracks hail from the Beatles catalog, with the rest slanted toward early solo-career standouts like "Jet," "Maybe I'm Amazed," and "My Love." But Mac and his focused backing quartet deliver them with a punchy edge and sense of abandon that's largely MIA on previous McCartney live releases. Other than pausing for tributes to his fallen comrades ("Here Today," a solo acoustic paean to John Lennon followed by a touching, ukulele-backed nod to George Harrison with "Something"), it's largely a rollicking career retrospective from a musician whose restless drive to perform invests this collection with something more than mere nostalgia. The singer who invoked Bach at 22 may still refuse to act his age, but here that's not a bad thing at all. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Live Set by Paul McCartney.......2007-06-15

By the year 2000, Paul McCartney's place in music history was long cemented. Whether you look at McCartney's work with the Beatles, Wings, or even as a solo artist - he really doesn't have much more to prove. There was even that time in the mid-1980s when McCartney's solo career hit a bump in the road both critically and professionally - then thanks to a songwriting partnership with Elvis Costello, McCartney bounced back with his magnificent effort "Flowers in the Dirt". Upon proving he could launch the comeback, McCartney didn't fade into oblivion. The comeback helped McCartney help regain the commercial success and critical acclaim that seemed to be lost when he hit that bump in the road. By the time 2002, rolled around, McCartney would put out another successful album - "Driving Rain" and embarked on a subsequent tour. The album "Back in the U.S. - Tour 2002" provides a very good snapshot of the material that McCartney would cover during that 2002 tour. It also provides a collection of live material by McCartney spanning a 5 decade period consisting of his Beatles work, Wings material, and his solo work - most definitely t the longest span of live material of any McCartney live collection.

"Back in the U.S. - Tour 2002" is not the first live album by McCartney. Here are some highlights:
* "Wings Across America": This was the only live album released under the Wings umbrella. It was released in 1976 and consists of a mix of McCartney's Beatles and post-Beatles material.
* "Tripping the Fantastic Live": A 1990 release that covers Beatles material through material done on 1989's "Flowers in the Dirt". It also consists of covers such as Fats Domino's "Aint that a Shame".
* "Unplugged": A 1991 live set of stripped-down, acoustic versions of McCartney's material as well as covers.
* "Paul is Live": A 1993 live album in support of his "Off the Ground" album. Mostly Beatles, McCartney solo material, and covers. There is very little Wings material here.

This is a terrific set. Here are 10 points to take from this set.

1.While the liner notes don't say it, I believe it is safe to assume that the material is taken from many nights throughout that 2002. For the most part - there is something magical about hearing a great performance on a single night captured on a collection. I find that taking live songs from different concerts on different nights, the flow is disrupted. You also don't get the opportunity to hear the CD as if it were the concert preventing you from getting the full experience. However, this collection does a nice job at getting as close to creating a single night experience as possible.

2.While the music is outstanding, I would have liked more in terms of dialogue with the audience. I've seen McCartney in concert and he really connects with the audience. It would have been nice to hear some of that in the collection.

3.I like how the collection starts with "Hello Goodbye" and ends with "Sgt Peppers/The End". These were almost the perfect "start" and "end" songs for this collection.

4.McCartney assembles a terrific band for this tour consisting of Rusty Anderson on guitars, Paul "Wix" Wickens on keyboards, Brian Ray on bass, and Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums. McCartney alternates between guitars, bass, and piano throughout the concert. The top-notch band really helps add to the electricity of the performance. Most notable is Laboriel Jr.'s performance on the drums. Laboriel Jr. might be the best drummer in the world that many people don't know about. His drums are thundering throughout the concert. On the final track "The End" he is completely worthy of the epic drum solo in that song. As much as I love Ringo Starr - Laboriel Jr. is the better drummer.

5.As mentioned, McCartney alternates between guitar, bass, and piano. McCartney - as he typically does will structure his concert around a guitar set, an acoustic (i.e "unplugged" set), and a piano/keyboard set. The best set is McCartney's piano/keyboard set that comes up at the end of the concert. I do admit, the acoustic set is a bit on the long side.

6.Perhaps the most interesting song is McCartney's "Ukulele" version of George Harrison's legendary Beatles contribution "Something". This is part of the acoustic set. Despite the stripped down version of the song, McCartney is able to convey the power and emotion that this song is so rich in.

7.There is a lot of material on here - 35 songs, but of course there is a lot of material missing. It is almost impossible to get everything on this collection. I would have liked to have seen "Flowers in the Dirt" material, but that is available on "Tripping the Fantastic Live". One could easily Monday Morning Quarterback and say they would want songs like "With a Little Luck", "Silly Love Songs", "Michelle", etc.

8-Other noteworthy performances on the collection are "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Live and Let Die", "Let Me Roll It", "The Fool on the Hill", "Back in the USSR", and "Eleanor Rigby". There are no bad songs on this collection - everything is quality.

9.If you haven't heard McCartney do "Hey Jude" live, you must hear it. McCartney creates a true performance in which he gets everyone in attendance involved. While the version on this album is not as good as the performance on the "Live in Red Square DVD", this version will still give you a good feel for how he gets the audience involved.

10.The liner notes consist of write-ups by McCartney and each of the band members reflecting on the tour. This is really good stuff.

Overall this is an extremely good collection by McCartney - and it might be the strongest one when compared to the other McCartney live collections that are out there. If you are looking to get hold of McCartney live material, this is the place to start.

3 out of 5 stars The live show dilemma.......2007-03-19

This aural souvenir of Paul McCartney's 2002 American tour gets only a middling rating.

The playlist on BACK IN THE U.S. is nothing less than spectacular; performances are better than competent-- McCartney is in good voice and the backup's right-on with their renderings of oh-so-familiar tunes. Paul's occasional lyric lapses are forgivable, and because of tight editing, crowd noise isn't much of a distraction. So what's wrong with this album?

Simply put: it's not all that easy to listen to, mainly due to a too-high volume level. Even gentle songs like "Yesterday," "Here, There And Everywhere," "Mother Nature's Son," "Eleanor Rigby" and "Fool On The Hill" are unpleasantly harsh because they're just TOO LOUD. And the supposed-to-be-loud songs are quite deafening.

Live albums invite such criticisms, and more. If the musicians choose to reinterpret old favorites, the cry of "Blasphemy! How dare they!" is heard, and if they remain as faithful to the studio tracks as possible, then the complaint is "you may as well stick with the originals." It's a no-win.

Being at a great live performance is exciting for the audience, yet a transcription of the same show rarely captures the acoustics, the feel or the mood. Such is the case here. To be fair, this is as fine a Paul McCartney live album as he's ever released. But that only means all of them are in some way flawed.

5 out of 5 stars Great band feeling........2007-01-11

I love this cd for the super sounds expressed.
The band is extremely in harmony with the McCartney point of view.
Tracks are very similar to the original feeling.
I prefer the Wings and the McCartney discography that the Beatles discography and anyway this CD contains much Beatles songs than McCartney and Wings.

You can't loose "Jet", "Let me roll it", "Coming up" and more.
Superlatives!!!!!!!!!

Yes maybe the sound mix is not perfect - I'm not competent - but the spirit of the music there is in large quantity.

5 out of 5 stars Superb performance.......2007-01-11

If you had to take one Live McCartney CD with you on a desert island this would be it.
There are the obligatory Hey Jude, Let It Be, Live and Let Die, etc... along with enough songs that he'll probably only play once (Hello Goodbye, Lonely Road, Mother Nature's Son, Getting Better, Something,...) to make it all worthwhile.
Although McCartney is usually true to the original studio version, he mixes things up enough to make the concert interesting. "Something" on the ukelele, We Can Work it Out on a simple guitar, Carry that Weight on a plain piano, Sgt Pepper blended with the Abbey Road medley, etc...
The only "ouch" is Freedom, the If I Had A Hammer 9/11 sound-a-like which borders on painful.
On the other side of the equation, you have Lonely Road - a real sleeper. One of my favorites - I'm surprised it never really caught on.
And here is heresy: Can't Buy me Love and I Saw Her Standing There sound more exciting and vibrant than on the Beatles' studio album. Even My Love - unadulterated mush on the studio version - nearly sounds good as a result of McCartney's remarkable vocal gyrations.
People will listen to this concert 100 years from now and say "wow".

2 out of 5 stars Awful Live Recording.......2006-07-22

The recording of this live music is one of the worst I've ever heard and rivals the quality on some bootlegs. The guitars are way up and overpower everything else, including Paul's voice. There's no transition between the songs - just wait 3 seconds and the next one starts. Amateurish is the best way to describe this effort.

    Album Description

In 2005 Dutch guitarist/composer/producer/Ayreon mainman, Arjen A. Lucassen released the debut album of his new band Stream Of Passion. The album, Embrace The Strom, was way more modern than his Rock Operas and had a more gothic metal approach. The album went into the Dutch charts and Stream Of Passion toured Europe in early 2006. The band performed seven of their own songs plus a fine collection of Arjen Lucassen´s Ayreon classics, like Computer Eyes, Valley of the Queens, The Castle Hall, a collection of Human Equation songs and many others. For the Ayreon material the band were supported by Damian Wilson, who originally appeared on many of the Ayreon albums. The double CD was recorded in Rijssen, Holland on the 17th February 2006.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Arjen hasn't lost his touch.......2006-08-28

I purchased this CD with the DVD, but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. Although this is not up to Ayreon standards, it is really good. This reminds me of when Arjen re-recorded the first Ayreon CD in a kind of folksy way with the Special Edition. Mellow and cool. I love this woman's voice. For all Ayreon fans, you've got to hear these versions of their songs. I love how they re-imagined "Into the black hole". When are we going to see them in the U.S.A.? I'll be sure to go.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-05-05

Gotta admit this is one helluva live album.

I love the reviews that say "blah blah Neil" if you were a fan you would know its Neal ;-)

Yes Spock's 2.0 took some time getting used to afer all the years with NEAL at the helm. But I gotta admit my ears like what the boys are doing.

    4 out of 5 stars Good album.......2006-03-24

Spock's Beard has survived the exit of Neal Morse pretty well. But unlike Genesis, it has taken the remaining members a little time to get up to speed. The new songs are often really good and sometimes just ok. I do prefer them with Neal Morse more, as I think they are a little more one dimensional. So that's where I'm coming from.

So what do I think of the CD? I think they play really tight and the recording is a very good one. They wisely avoid playing all but a few of the older numbers.

If you're a fan you need this album.

    5 out of 5 stars I Admit, I'm A Glutton!.......2006-02-02

First off, I am not a big fan of "live" CD's (fan noise, poor production quality, etc.) This is the EXCEPTION. Excellent production combined with great performances by the Beard make this an essential buy! Both NEW Beard fans an the loyal "old timers" will be pleased by the selections performed. The entire "Flash Before My Eyes" suite opens disc 1 in GRAND fashion, not straying too far from the Octane version. Alan , Ryo, Dave, Nick and tour drummer Jimmy Keegan are all in great form! Most of the Octane CD matterial is performed on GFP to please the NEW fans. For the old, the Beard play such jewels as "Harm's Way", "The Light" and "At The End Of The Day" and pull them off quite well despite Neal's absence. The highlight of this CD is definately Jimmy Keegan's BRILLIANT drum work on "NWC". His solo contains the perfect mix of taste, flash, and passion. Jimmy is the perfect compliment to the rest of the crew...Nick D stepping up front does a fine job as the lead vocalist. Please don't be a "glutton for punishment"- buy this CD. At the end of the day, you'll be "fine".....

    3 out of 5 stars Spock's Beard's Seconds Out.......2006-01-14

I know Neal Morse has moved on and SB is attempting to move on without him but this recording only emphasizes just how much he is missed. It reminds me of the Genesis live recording "Second's Out". The music was good but they really missed Peter Gabriel and seemed to struggle finding their place without him. Which they eventually did.

In the case of this recording, the songs performed from their last two recordings come off much better than the older SB tunes. The old tunes just have a hole where Neal should be. Neal wrote those songs taking into consideration his own keyboard and guitar parts. The songs sound hollow without them. By contrast, the newer songs were writen for a four piece band and sound very good recorded live.I wish they would have performed "A Guy named Sid" and left off "The Light".

Granted, Ryo does an outstanding job playing all the keyboard parts but on songs like "Harms Way" and "At the End of the Day" the layering of multiple keyboards and guitars is really missing.I am a bit disappointed by his solo. It puts you to sleep. Granted, it is very nice but come on Ryo, it's not a recital!

I'm not all that happy with the mix either. The vocals sound flat and lifeless. They should have added a "sweetening" and reverb to give the vocals a more live sound. The kick drum is too pervasive and the keyboards sound thin, when they really need to fill them out to make up for Neal.

While not a real barn burner, I am not heaving this CD entirely. It is a good snapshot of where the band is now. I am hoping the band continues to produce and perhaps the next live CD will be able to say goodbye to the old SB all together.

4 out of 5 stars Very good preformance.......2005-11-29

Spock's Beard. The mere name of the band will entice either shivers of awe, or angry spite. For only short years ago, they were at the top of the progressive rock genre. Then, the creative engine behind them - as well as vocalist, part-guitarist, and vocalist - Neal Morse decided to leave the band to persue his solo projects. As a side note, said projects are amazing pieces of music in their own right. But with Morse's absence, the Beard ventured into the rock cauldron and its essentially synth-laden rock, as opposed to progressive.

Back to here. Back to the Gluttons For Punishment. I must first get out of the way, I am, will be, and have been critical of the new Spock's Beard. I'm not even remotely a fan of Feeling Enphoria or Octane. That said, I always preferred what Morse wrote, and his very voice, over the current Spock's Beard.

That said, this is a very, very good live album. I can't comment too much on the material from Octane, but the old Beard tracks, and Ghost of Autumn, are very well done. Nick's voice does it some justice. The Light is very good - and, as with any live progressive recording, I enjoy the improv pieces thrown into the songs. It is those that truely separate a live concert to listening to the album woth a CD player. You don't want to know whats next. Needless to say, this album has that.

I'm not going to go through all the songs, because you shouldn't know when one of these unique add-ons occur, but if you're a fan of Spock's Beard, at all, I recommend you pick this album up. It'll never live up to Neal Morse's days, but it's certainly a fitting tribute to the glorious days of Spock's Beard.

3 out of 5 stars Good live album with mediocre sound.......2003-02-10

There are long-time PFM fans who think this album is the stuff that makes life worth living. I've had this album for at least 20 years and it doesn't do much for me. I've listened to 1998's "www-pfmpfm-it" in 1-1/2 years than I've listened to this in 20 years. That's not a knock, it's just intended to give some balance for prospective buyers who may not have heard the album already.

The musicianship on the album is very good. "Four Holes in the Ground" and "Celebration" are done very well, despite being played at an almost frantic speed. "Just Look Away" changes up the arrangement from the studio version, including a long intro by Franco Mussida on the most electrified acoustic guitar you're ever likely to hear, and a more powerful close. But the album's sound quality is mediocre at best, not as bad as the terrible bootleg quality of "A Celebration" and "10 Anni Live", but below average even by '70s standards (was "Waiting for Columbus" the ONLY well-recorded live album that decade?). About one-third of the album is taken up by "Alta Loma Five Till Nine", a 15-minute jam of guitar and violin solos that follows "Mr. Nine Till Five". It's played very well, but how much you like it will depend on how much you personally like long jamming solos--if that's what you like, add another star. After listening to PFM's most recent albums, I can't help but notice that all of the vocalists have improved a LOT since the 70s.

    (1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)

    5 out of 5 stars Contains PFM's greatest jam.......2000-02-22

This was originally released in Europe as "Live in USA" and in the US as "Cook" with a cheesy cover. You always wonder about Record Executives and how they can possibly think that this type of artwork can be attractive or would want to make anyone buy the album. It is from the same concert tour as "10 Anni Live Vol II". You might wanto to consider "10 Anni Live Vol II" simply because it has most of what is here plus an extra 20 minutes.

On the plus side for "Live In USA": sound quality is a little better. On "10 Anni Live", there is a high pitched whine at the beginning of Alta Loma. There is also a great acoustic guitar solo that isn't available on "10 Anni Live".

My favorite number by PFM has always been Alta Loma. It has a great flow to it, starting with an impressive guitar solo and ending with the screaming violin solo. This version is very tight. Other versions, such as on "10 Anni Live" have an extra violin part that actually detracts from the tight flow.

On the down side: The annoying "Four Holes in the Ground" is freatured and you have to wade through Mr. Nine to Five to get to Alta Loma. These really aren't bad songs, but they are the bombastic, neo-classical type of songs that gave progressive music a bad name. But, the other other numbers and especially Alta Loma are enough to give it 5 stars.

    4 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one.......1999-09-18

An excellent live album, from shows given in New York and Canada back in 1974. Excellent selection of tracks. "Alta Loma 5 till 9" (never released in a studio album) is a must have where Mussida's guitar is absolutely phenomenal, in a rather long (15 min, not quite long enough though...) and jazzy structure. Powerful interpretation of E' Festa/Celebration. Display of classical influence and virtuosity in "4 Holes in the ground". Classical guitar solo as intro to "Dolce Maria/Just look away". PFM is here at their best. "Older" PFM fans all remind of those years (1971-1975) as the very best... Would give 5 stars but sound could be a little better.

Dream Theater and Transatlantic (and other sideline groups) are good at doing medleys! It was good to hear All of the Above, I think they did a good job of it.

But I thought they sounded a bit tired on the album, and I miss the original keyboard/guitar arrangements that worked well together on SMPTE.

But overall not a bad attempt! I believe this was their last album. Would have been interesting the Moarse man stayed on with these guys in this group and see what other wonderful material they would have brought out!

If you are a Transatlantic fan add it to your collection. Experince what they were like in concert on this CD because not many people had the chance too!

2 out of 5 stars Some good songs, pretty cruddy singing.......2004-09-02

Neal Morse for some reason sounds really good on the first section of "All of the Above" but is terrible on track 2 and other various songs on the CD. Everytime I hear him hit a bad note, it makes me wince. Same goes for Mike Portnoy. He is an excellent, innovative drummer, one that I look up to, but he goes a bit overboard with his singing, for his vocal abilities are very limited. Otherwise the musicianship is good quality. The cover of Genesis's "Watcher of the Skies/Firth of Fifth" was excellent, as well as the 30 minute epic, "All of the Above."

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not their best.......2004-01-17

The 2 studio albums Transatlantic put out are very well done with excellent production and fine musicianship. As a fan of all the bands (Spock's Beard, Marillion, Flower Kings, Dream Theater), I am pretty familiar with the playing abilities of the band's members (Neal Morse, Pete Trewavas, Roine Stolt, and Mike Portnoy). Although the music selection is great with a good mix of Tranatlantic material, classic prog (Genesis), and a medley of the 4 band's music listed above, the performance is fair. Not to be too harsh on these guys as they haven't had the time to play as a band and this recording was made during a tour of only 6 shows (ever). Considering the lack of playing time as a band, they do pretty well. But there is room for improvement. It was a surprise to see their willingness to put out a live album considering their limited time together, so hats off to their boldness. If you are a hardcore fan, pick it up; if you are exploring Transatlantic's music for the first time, start with either of their superb studio albums. This is good, but not their best.

5 out of 5 stars Its what makes a live album great and other thoughts.......2003-04-02

The one thing I hate about many live albums is the inclusion of overdubs after the fact to correct the flubs. There are none of those on this album. Yes, TransAtlantic make a few gaffs, but that's part of the charm. I got this album soon after it was released and have enjoyed it ever since.
Sadly, with the exception of the soon to be released DVD, there will be no more TransAtlantic. Neal's decision to persue other musical avenues has ended this great collaberation. Grab this collection, grab SMPT:e, grab Bridge Across Forever.
The one thing you need to remember is that all of these albums were recorded over an incredibly brief period of time. SMPT:e was recorded in four separate studios with the players not really playing together until the Live in America shows. Bridge was recorded in a four days, with some tweaking after the fact.
These three albums are a testament to the creativity and talent of these four musicians. Don't let them fade away.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great production.......2002-06-19

Thid cd is cool, but the production is not great. It sounds good, but at times certain instruments are hard to here. The keysboards are not very at hot in the mix at times. I guess I just got spoiled to hearing the excellent studio versions. This cd is still cool though. The band does some excellent cover songs. If you are a true Transatlantic fan you should buy this cd, but if you are buying their music for the first time, don't get this one. The other two cd's are awesome.

String quartet versions exelled such beautiful performance! After reviewing Tupac Shakur's original albums, I decided to check out the string quartet. To be honest, Tupac's work shows such strong, beautiful meanings of his life while the string version plays the beauty of many instruments dedicating to Tupac's work and his music. For those who love rap and a side of classical listening, this is one collection you can't pass up to!

WILLIE KENT's Live at B.L.U.E.S. is a typical club show a very good record, where the most of the tracks are very good standards one of them composed by Willie Kent like is the good Blues "All my life" the remainder are excellent themes all times classics which are brilliantly covered by this bassist master Willie. The majority of the songs are often extended to six or seven minutes being the outstanding track the Buddy Guy's "A man and his Blues" which there is an intense, brilliant and matching guitar playing by Jake Dawson and the luminary Johnny B. Moore as well as a good piano work by Ken Barker. Besides all other tracks frankly very very good authentic Chicago Blues in all senses, Little Junior Parker's "Mother in law Blues", fantastic Magic Sam's "Looking good", of course one of his mentor the sensational Muddy Water's "Ship made of paper" marvellous Lowell Fulson's "Black Night", "I'm good" with the magnificient participation of the sweetheart of the Blues the big Bonnie Lee, historical and multi-cover B.B.King's "Rock me", the slow Blues Little Joe Blue's "Dirty work going on", fierce Hound Dog Taylor's "Sadie" Hound dog one of the better, famous and friendly Little Milton's "Tin pan Alley" and closing with the animated Little Johnny Christian's "If you got to love somebody". I recommend it to all Blues followers.
