3 out of 5 stars Rather Underwhelming..........2003-02-18

I had been in Ft. Benning for BCT & AIT for my 11M MOS and had Ranger and SF drill sergeants (and not drill "instructors" as the back cover so proudly -- but erroneously [DIs are an USMC institution, not Army] -- notes) with combat experience lead me and my training platoon on daily PT morning ***AND*** evening! And this CD just can't compare...sorry, I guess I'm being especially picky, but it just doesn't sound anywhere near a whole Sand Hill training battalion of 2,000 recruits sounding off, with the Georgia woods echoing in hearty approval...sounds like just a squad of guys on a treadmill in the recording studio! Besides, this is the PG-version (again, understandable, and I suppose I am indeed just being picky here -- BUT...still...!), ***NOT*** the real-life Army versions of the cadences full of blood-lust and sophomoric sex (killing kids, killing Somalis or Iraqis or Commies, playing with girls and women, etc.)...also, almost every track sounds alike, they're the same cadence, with different words, and a different note or octave here and there! Unfortunately, my local library system -- and I'm in NYC! (Or maybe that's why...LOL) -- doesn't carry these cadence CDs...I wouldn't have spent the $$ if I knew this would be so repetitive and accoustically so-so...yes, even with the "percussion enhancement"! An okay, but really uninspired CD, like something someone knocked off in their parents' garage...almost a slight disservice to the weird charm of these "jody calls"...not really recommended. I was going to get the other titles in their Army marching and running cadences, as some familiar favorites have been spread all over the series, but not now!

4 out of 5 stars The man behind the music.......2006-12-12

yep, Alchemist picked up where Havoc left off, recreated the mobb sound, got QB on fire with street anthems all year long, so he had to make it official with one of the best release of 2004.
"Hold you down", the single for the album is reminiscent of Primo circa early nineties, with the soulfoul sample, scratched shoot outs and the strings playing in the back, it all blends together, without taking over the lyrics, only in NY.
There's so much goodies on this one, and the collabos with the Mobb and D-Block on "D-Block to QB", B Real on "Bang Out", Nas on "Tick Tock", and that unadulterated wailing on "It's a craze", it's a lot of heat, not one filler, if you're familiar with QB artists, Mobb Deep, Cormega, AZ, Nas, matter of fact, if you're familiar with the NY sound, you will love it.
Alchemist is the white son Primo never had. Let the Neptunes and Kanye West rule MTV, The Alchemist rules NY streets.

    3 out of 5 stars Alchemist - 1st Infantry.......2006-04-20

This record is somewhere between a 3 and a 4 rating. The beats made by Al are outstanding, and on other albums would make superb hits, however some of the artists featured here destroy them. Lyrically, this album is average at best. The beats make this album what it is and are far better than almost any other hip-hop album around, yet they are almost damaged by the lyricists featured.

    top tracks:
    1-dead bodies (f. game & prodigy)
    2-the essence (f. the l.o.x.)
    3-it's a craze (f. mobb deep)
    4-for the record
5-hold u down (f. nina sky, prodigy & illa ghee)

4 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent.......2006-01-09

The Alchemist is well known on the underground scene, but wasn't well known by the average Joe 'til this album came out. The only single off the album, "Hold You Down" with Prodigy of Mobb Deep did decent. This opened up people to the ALC. This album is a good example of why folks should've paid respect to The Alchemist much earlier. Of course, the album has it's flaws though. There are a number of artists that appear on the album, but a lot of them just get repetitive. I like Prodigy and Sheek Louch's music, but I felt like there was no need to put them on more than one track, considering it was a mixtape of sorts. I also felt like there could've been some different styles of production. However, this album is still great. I enjoyed what the artists brought to the album, and 'Our boy Al' did a good job on production. You won't be dissappointed with spending your money on this album. Best tracks are:
    1)"The Essence"-The LOX
    2 "Tick Tock"-NaS, and Prodigy
    3 "Bangers"-Lloyd Banks

    4 out of 5 stars reppin ALC!!!.......2005-09-12

It been almost a year since Alchemist's debut album/compilation was released but I still listen to it like its brand new!! Alchemist has been one of my favorite producers since I 1st heard his music on Mobb Deeps Murda Muzik album back in 1999. He has produced at least 1 song on Mobb Deeps albums since then as well as tracks for M.O.P., Pharoahe Monch, Dilated Peoples, Cypress Hill, Defari, Jadakiss, Nas, Cormega, CNN, Ras Kass, Royce Da 5'9'', Styles, D12 Snoop Dogg and others. This album is great and is everything I expected. 1st off, the lead single "hold you down" samples the same song as Jay-Z's "soon you'll understand", to me its not a rip off. It happens in rap all the time, 2 people sample the same song. To me a rip off is when Puff Daddy jacks "i got 5 on it" for some gay song he made with r.kelly. Anyways back to ALC, some of the guests suprised me like Devin the dude and TI. The songs with them came out with good results. Mobb Deep, Lox and Dilated Peoples I expected, they should be a given when it comes to ALC. Overall this cd is banging and the best song on here is "Different Worlds" w/ Twin of Infamous Mobb. ALC and Twin go back and forth about coming up from different lives to come together and make music. ALc isnt that bad on the mic but hes only on 2 songs, "hold you down" and "different worlds". Mobb Deep, TheLox, and their respective crews are plastered all over this album. Other guests include Game, B-Real, Lloyd Banks, & Stat Quo.

1 out of 5 stars Very lacking cadences.......2006-08-14

I graduted Army Basic Combat Training in Nov 05. Charlie Battery, 1/79 FA, Fort Sill, OK.

The cadence callers and responders are quite lacking on this CD. The cadences are old and the calling, quite frankly, sucks. The audio quality is poor as well.

The production company really needs to coorindate with basic training company or battery and have their Drill Sergeants record some quality, motivating cadences. The cadences called at BCT are *far, far* better than this stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality sound and segmenting of tracks.......2005-10-03

The CD has very poor sound quality to begin with. The tracks are not broken up into singular cadences.

    5 out of 5 stars military cadance.......2001-12-30

James Reese Europe was a major figure in New York's African American musical community in the years leading up to World War I, collaborating with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle and working closely with the popular dance team of Vernon and Irene Castle. With the outbreak of war, Europe formed the Hell Fighters Band, part of the African American 369th U.S. Infantry. The band returned to the U.S. to great acclaim in February 1919, and the 24 tracks heard here were recorded in New York between March 3 and May 7 of that year. Two days later, Europe was stabbed to death by a disgruntled drummer, Herbert Wright, during an intermission in a Boston concert.

Though he was a titanic figure--Europe was the first African American officer to lead men into battle and Eubie Blake called him "the savior of Negro musicians"--his fame soon turned to obscurity. In 1995, Reid Bodger's thorough biography of Europe, A Life in Ragtime, appeared, rekindling widespread interest, and the following year saw the appearance of this music on two different CDs. A large band of brass, reeds, and percussion, with vocals by Noble Sissle, Europe's orchestra plays the popular music of the day with a distinctive spirit and a marked rhythmic fluency uncommon in orchestral ragtime. W.C. Handy is prominent in the repertoire ("St. Louis Blues," "Hesitating Blues," "Memphis Blues"). The songwriting team of Europe, Blake, and Sissle ranges in their subject matter from "Jazz Baby" to the wartime experiences of "No-Man's Land." Europe's associate Tom Bethel contributed "That Moaning Trombone" with its vocal effects, while "Clarinet Marmalade" comes from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Despite the references to jazz, though, this is a band poised on the jazz era, not a jazz band, with improvisation mostly limited to brief "breaks." Songs from White and African American composers alike contribute to the complex representation of black life in America, one alive with both stereotypes and new possibilities.

Another edition of these recordings, James Reese Europe appeared a few months earlier on the IAJRC label with the tracks arranged in chronological order of recording rather than the pattern here, which simulates the order of one of Jim Europe's concerts. Both versions provide a worthwhile portrait of a major figure in American music; however, they also represent slightly different philosophies of sound restoration. The IAJRC preserves much of the static to avoid loss of detail; the Memphis Archive is much cleaner and generally far more listenable. The Memphis Archive edition also contains substantial supporting material, a detailed 44-page account of Europe's life and music by Tim Gracyk. --Stuart Broomer

    Album Description

James Reese Europe was the world's most accomplished black bandleader before 1920. he was internationally famous as the founder of New York's Clef Club, and as music director for Vernon and Irene Castle.

During World War I, he organized and led the all-black 369th U.S. Infantry "Hell Fighters" Band. They fought in the trenches, introduced that new music "Jazz" to the Continent, and were acclaimed in France and America as the greatest-ever regimental band.

In May, 1919, the "Hell Fighters" were on the last leg of their triumphal U.S. victory concert tour when Europe was murdered at age 39. All 24 recordings he made for Pathe in the last two months of his life are collected on this CD as well as a 44 page booklet with rare photographs and liner notes.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The transitional music mostly hints at jazz.......2000-10-26

Shortly after the IAJRC label came out with a CD reissuing all of the music recorded by James Reese Europe's unusual band during their four 1919 sessions, Memphis Archives put out a CD with the exact same material. The difference between the sets is that while IAJRC put out the material in strict chronological order, Memphis Archives instead chose to simulate a Europe concert. The liner notes of course differ greatly on these two competing sets, and the edge is given to Memphis Archives for Tim Gracyk's very extensive essay. The transitional music mostly hints at jazz but does not contain much improvisation. Europe's brand of dance music occupied its own category, including some Noble Sissle vocals, marching music, rags, waltzes, novelties and future jazz standards, and either of his sets (recorded just a short time before his murder) are recommended. Now if only Europe's eight groundbreaking titles of 1913-1914 would be reissued

1 out of 5 stars A sampler of patriotic music.......2002-06-17

This is NOT the soundtrack of the TV series 'Victory At Sea'. Instead it has a medley of some of the tunes from that series, plus other patriotic and marching music. Althought the performances are OK, this is not what I was looking for. What in the world is the Warsaw Concerto doing in this collection...

5 out of 5 stars You can actually feel the ships roll on the high seas.......1999-09-06

I can remember my folks (air force lt. col. & army nurse) playing this as I was growing up, and I can't recall any other album or recording of any other music that puts me there, in the pacific, on the high seas, rolling with the waves and seeing the big guns fired, the way this album does. As long as I live, this will remind me of the BIG ONE, and also of my mom & dad. There are such glorious movements that can and will move one to tears if they have any recollection of the war at all. A must for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent relative unknowns.......2006-06-16

The songs are catchy and the musical arrangements are epic and powerful. If you can see them live don't pass up the opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks!.......2006-02-04

This album is lyrically driven in a way that I haven't heard in a long time. The songs are so potent and powerful. They take you to another place. Tracks range from big rock ballads to almost acoustic poetic reveries. It's hard for me to take the cd out of the cd player in my car. I just keep listening to it. If you haven't heard of these guys yet, you will. They are blowing up - and once you hear this album you'll know why. 5 stars. No question.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, Political, Personal.......2006-01-17

Nathan Asher and the Infantry have found their groove.

Nathan's passionate vocals and lyrics have lost none of the intensity, and have gained new direction and control.

This album focuses more on the intimate and personal rather than the political. The politics are still there, but it is easier to connect with the work on a personal level.
