To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood
Album Description
There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.

Happy Music.......2007-08-03
I bought this for a friend of mine who loved his rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". She didn't know who sang it but we listened to it at her birthday party and this was it. Just Iz and his ukeleli. Anyway, we enjoyed the rest of the album too. His style was so gentle and pure.
The world lost one of it's beautiful spirits.
Can't Stop Listening.......2007-07-30
This is my second CD by IZ I will keep collecting his music as long as he keeps producing it. It offers a taste of pure Hawaii. Don't miss it.
Breath of fresh air!.......2007-07-28
Iz and his music are truely a breath of fresh air in a world full of cookie cutter music. He's a master of the ukulele, and has a voice as sweet and clear as a warm Hawaiian day. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" is beyond perfection. It fills the soul with joy and lifts you above the clouds...above the rainbow. A must for the Hawaiian music collector.
Takes you to a happy place.......2007-07-23
I got this CD mainly for "Somewhere over the Rainbow", but do enjoy the entire range of songs. Would recommend it, however, I probably will not buy any more of his stuff; a little goes a long way.
You need this classic for your Hawaiian music collection.......2007-07-21
This guy has an amazing voice and this album shows it off very well. Contains the "Over the Rainbow" version seen on TV and many other songs. It is also a "political" statement in music. Iz was anti-US and favored Hawaiian independence. But, still an amazing album and music.

The artist behind Facing Future, the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time, the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole was possessed of a voice so sweet, so tender, and so lovely that it continues to deeply stir those who hear it long after he died. Lovingly assembled and notated by producer Jon de Mello, Alone in IZ World is comprised of both alternate versions of Kamakawio'ole's best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public. The latter category includes versions of "Hanohano No Na Cowboy," the playfully incomplete opening on "Mona Lisa," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," on which IZ takes a rare turn at harmonizing with himself. In light of his premature passing, devastatingly beautiful alternate cuts of "Starting All Over Again" and "In This Life" are especially poignant. And "Over the Rainbow"--IZ's renditions were heard in Meet Joe Black and Finding Forrester--may never again sound so pure. --Paige La Grone

True Hawaiian.......2007-07-30
If you like Hawaiian music, IZ is the man. I love his renditions of Hawaiian and traditinal music. He has a beautiful voice. "Over the Rainbow",in his unique style, is a definite favorite. I play his CD's over and over again - a vicarious trip to the islands.
one of a kind!.......2007-07-28
Iz was truely one of a kind. A multi talented singer and song writer, who can pull you into his music and surround you with the warmth of the islands. I highly recomend this CD. Great Hawaiian music that will be enjoyed by all.
Alone In IZ World is worth a look.......2007-07-05
This was the first Israel Kamakawiwo'ole cd I had listened to. I think despite the fact that at least one of the songs (Mona Lisa) wasn't finished it's an excellent CD. The song "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is a beautiful Hawaiian rendition of an old Classic. The CD is lighthearted, fun, and introspective at times, offering a track with audio from Iz talking about his battle with obesity (something hardcore Iz fans might enjoy). The word: if you have all of his CD's and love IZ get this one, if this is your first purchase, buy another and work your way up to this one later.
IZ.......2007-06-28
This is a special type of recording that not everyone would care for. It is what I would call a Kamaaina type of CD; i.e., if you like down home Hawaiian style, it's great. Having lived in HI for over 18 yrs, I really dig it. The reason I say this is that it's the type of recording that's rather "off-the-wall." There's false starts, talking and just plain uke strumming and picking up words as he goes along, but it's real. These are recordings as they actually happened rather than having been rehearsed. For those that have sat around a bonfire eating pig and poi, listening to uke players, I'm sure they will enjoy it!
Relaxing and beautiful.......2007-06-27
The tracks on this album are beautiful from Iz's rendition of "Mona Lisa" to the now familiar "Over the Rainbow". What is most haunting is hearing Iz speaking on several tracks, especially his views about death and losing his family members. A definite must have.

Customer Reviews:
It was GOOD but not WONDERFUL.......2007-07-31
I have almost all of IZs albums and that's the reason I bough this one. It was then, that I realized that it was "arranged" with a big orchestra. I guess it is OK to listen to because his voice and the orchestrations are nice on their own, but I'm not crazy about it because I cannot think they necessarily go toghether well. It is probably just me, but I like his voice and his ukalele sound much better. It is still GOOD, don't get me wrong...but it's just my preference. But I loved the presentation...the cover is beautiful!
Wonderful World.......2007-07-28
The music on this CD is absolutely wonderful. In my opinion, Iz is one of the all time greats, especially for Hawaiian music. I have all of his CD's, and play them over and over. I recommend his albums to everyone. I think once you listen, you will be hooked. Happy Listening.
BEAUTIFUL MUSIC FROM HAWAII'S BEST NATIVE SON.......2007-07-28
I LOVE IZ'S MUSIC! HE SING FROM HIS HEART TO YOUR SOUL. I HAVE MOST OF THE SONGS THAT ARE ON THIS CD HERE ALREADY BUT THIS CD HERE HAS HIM SINGING WITH AN ORCHESTRA. AHH THE MAGIC MIXERS OF OUR TIME. THE ORCHESTRA / IZ WHAT MORE CAN YOU WANT! BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL... A GIFT FROM GOD
WHAT!!.......2007-07-23
Why ANYONE would feel the need the "remake" or add to the music of IZ is way beyond me (other than the obvious - $$$$). Skip this one and pick up any one of his previous albums - Trust me, they're all you'll ever need!
it is a good cd .......2007-07-22
I think that this is a good cd with the music of IZ, it has somewhat of a softer feeling to it.

A lonely Westerner in Nashville, Marty Robbins salved his soul by cutting an album (in one afternoon) of mostly self-composed cowboy ballads. One of them was a four-and-a-half-minute epic, "El Paso," that broke every rule of Top 40 programming to become a No. 1 pop and country hit in 1960. Robbins was arguably the most surefooted and accomplished singer in all country music, and that was never more obvious than on these Western ballads performed to often breathtaking perfection with a very small group and a vocal trio. Other titles include "Big Iron" (also a Top 30 hit), "Running Gun," and Western classics like "Cool Water," "Billy the Kid," and "The Strawberry Roan." Three extra tracks flesh out the 1999 release, including "Saddle Tramp" (the B-side of "Big Iron") and "The Hanging Tree" (title song from the 1959 Gary Cooper Western). --Colin Escott
Customer Reviews:
Classic Cowboy.......2007-05-27
Although Frank Sinatra is credited with creating the first "concept" album. Columbia might have one-upped Capital with this unique "Old West" collection. Although its been almost 50 years since this jewel was first recorded, it sounds like it was made yesterday. Marty Robbins has had many hit albums in the C/W top ten, but none of them has been as endearing as this 1959 classic. You get "El Paso, "Cool Water" "The Hanging Tree" and 12 more ballards sung by one of Country/Western all-time favorites. I can guarantee, you will continue to listen to these cowboy story songs for years to come.
Gunfighter Ballads by Marty Robbins is Cowboy Songs at their Best.......2007-03-20
The lable attached to the CD says "All Time Country Classic". It's misleading. This is an all time classic, period. I first bought this collection as an LP. The front said "High Fidelity", not "Stereo High Fidelity," but as a kid in 1959, I didn't care. "El Paso" was #1 on the pop charts. Marty Robbins had been a "cross-over" artist making the charts with "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation," so I was primed when this album hit. Grammy-winning "Gunfighter Ballads..." set Marty Robbins apart. It isn't country, it isn't '50s pop, it might be Americana or folk music. It is cowboy or western music, I suppose. There are more reasons to own this album than "El Paso." "Cool Water," "The Master's Call." Utah Carol," "and "The Strawberry Roan" are all great songs interpreted by a great voice. "Gunfighter Ballads ..." is what it now says on the CD jacket, a "classic." Marty Robbins died in his early sixties, so many younger ears may not know him. They should, especially if they collect the good stuff from all eras.
Great CD.......2007-03-08
I grew up listeniing to Marty Robbins, and the Gunfighter Ballads is my favorite album and I just had to get this CD...because I use to listen to the music on LP, back in the 80's and I haven't heard the songs for over 15 years...with great imagination, listening to these songs would make it seem like you're watching a very interesting Western movie.
More than just "El Paso.".......2007-01-28
If you want to buy this CD just for "El Paso" you'll be plenty happy. If you allow yourself to listen to the remaining tracks, you'll be very happy. This was Marty's best effort, IMHO.
The remastering is done very well, although the source recording, being in 1959, does have its limitations. Overall, a very enjoyable CD, and well worth the work done to remaster and restore it!
Gunfighter Ballads & Trails Songs .......2007-01-18
I find the quality of the CD GUnfighter Ballads & Trail Songs to be fantastic. I never thought I would ever find this album in a CD form. This was one of my favorite albums I loved listening to when I was little. My dad loved this album as well and now that my dad passed away. Everytime I listen to this CD I think of my dad. Thanks Amazon for having it on hand for me to purchase it.

Purchased this CD for Hawaiian theme party... great collection of music and fantastic background for our party - continue to play it.
Did I receive a CD that someone else returned?.......2007-04-07
The music is beautiful, but I was really surprised with the poorness of presentation. The CD jewel case was badly damaged. The cover fell off as soon as I removed the plastic wrap, and the bottom corner of the case was completely missing. It's all an enigma -- the shrink wrap was intact and there were no small pieces of plastic anywhere. Perhaps this was a returned CD?
But back to the music - it is relaxing. There are only a few songs on the CD, which explains the low price.

Album Description
Released in 1996, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, better known as IZ is much a part of Hawaii as the beautiful blue oceans. Every cut on this album you can hear the power and majesty that is IZ, which gets into the listeners' heart and soul. "In Dis Life" serves-up a mix of Hawaiian language standards, two hit tunes from local artists, several fresh new songs and a Jawaiian remake of "Starting All Over Again". A must have if you are a fan of IZ's other material.

GREAT Hawaiian music..........2007-07-16
IZ passed away but the recordings he left behind capture the real essence of Hawaii. All his albums are outstanding
IZ.......2006-06-29
We discovered Iz while in Hawaii this past January. We have purchased all 6 of his CD's and all three of his DVD's. He has a beautiful voice, sense of humor, and love of his heritage and Hawaii. I just wish he was still with us to share himself. He is singing to God now and what a beautiful sound that must be. Thanks Iz for giving us your love and appreciation of Hawaii and what it means to the Hawaiian people.
Jack & Bobbie Adams Conover, NC
I'd say by far his best album........2006-05-14
Though all of his albums are recommended, no Israel Kamakawiwo'ole collection is complete without "In Dis Life." This album, I believe, is his best ever, despite the fact that it doesn't have his "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" medley on it. If you are looking for that particular song buy "Facing Future."
As for the selections on this CD, I particularly enjoy the title song, "Wai'alae," and his rendition of the Hawaiian Style Band's "Living in a Sovereign Land." The contemporary tunes show a different side of him. "'Opae E" has been a favorite of mine forever. I also like his jazzy rendition of "Aloha Ku'u Pua" and his medley of "Na Ka Puio" and "Keyhole Hula," otherwise known as "Kauoha Mai."
The only song that I think is just okay is "Yokozuna," at least for now, but maybe it'll grow on me eventually. I don't hate it though, just not one of my favorites. Maybe that's just because I would choose Hawaiian language songs over contemporary if I had to make a choice.
Please get this CD as well as all his others.
Hawaii's Favorite Braddah.......2006-04-22
I remember the year Braddah Iz died,I live in Waianae and it was a shock to the people of Hawaii.I remember the day of his funeral his ashes were scattered out to sea with his brother Skippy, people came from all over the island traffic was horrid, but it was for the love of the music this one man brought. I have lived most of my life in Hawaii, and have gotten to known the Hawaiian culture and music,my children are Hawaiian and have been blessed to been brought up with this man's music.Braddah Iz will always be apart of the Hawaiian aina, and culture and his music is still listened too this day........ God Bless Braddah Iz...and his family.
Brings a smile everytime.......2004-11-09
My wife and I heard IZ for the first time while on our honeymoon back in June 1997 while on a Helicopter Ride over Kauai. The pilot was playing his music over our headset as background music. At the time we didn't even realize how nice the music was and didn't think to ask the pilot who was singing.
Several days later we were in a shop and once again I heard his voice over the stores speakers and had to have the CD. This is classic Hawaiian music that brings me back to Hawaii every time I hear his music...and that is far since I live in New York.
Several years later I looked him up on the Internet and was heartbroken to learn he passed away...a week after we left Hawaii. I have purchased every CD as well as DVD's that have become available.
IZ died with a huge heart and the world has lost a great singer that believed in Hawaii and the land that was meant to be. You would be surprise to hear how many times you hear his music in movies, commercials and shows. A performer that will be remembered forever.

The movie and soundtrack that sealed Elvis' 1960s fate.......2007-06-20
After coming off back-to-back strong acting (and very little singing) movies in "Flaming Star" and "Wild In The Country" (but very little money at the box office), Elvis starred in "Blue Hawaii" and his acting career and soundtracks would never be the same again. The soundtrack was hugely successful by being No. 1 for more than a year. But it also doomed Elvis to a decade of corny scripts and corny songs, but big bucks in B formula movies.
The songs are fairly strong with the title track "Blue Hawaii" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" (which I had sung at my wedding!). Also, "Rock-A-Hula-Baby" is a great semi-rocker, along with the great ballads of "No More" and "Hawaiian Wedding Song".
But then you throw in the corny tunes of "Beach Boy Blues", "Slicin' Sand" and "Ito Eats", and you know the rocker of the 1950s is dead and twitching in the grave.
The vocals are solid in all the songs -- even the goofy ones -- but the success of this movie and soundtrack basically signed Elvis' death warrant in Hollywood. No more good scripts would ever find their way to Elvis' manager again -- it was all B movies from here on out and we were never able to see Elvis as a true actor, which is what he yearned to be.
takes me back.......2007-04-02
I enjoy this CD. Whenever I hear these tunes, I can see Elvis in all his Hawaiian beach boy glory. I like the extra songs at the end. You get just a snippet of Elvis being playful with the band and the producer. His voice still gives me chills.
Great album!.......2006-11-06
This album is great! From the excellent rock songs to the superb love songs. It's a definite must for any Elvis fan!
Elvis' biggest hit album!.......2006-10-08
Blue Hawaii is certainly one of Elvis' best soundtrack albums from the 60's and was his biggest hit album. It stayed at number 1 on the US album charts for a then record 20 weeks! It contains one of his signature songs "Can't Help Falling In Love" and the modest hit "Rock-A-Hula Baby". This CD release is made even better than the original by the includsion of several bonus tracks including an alternate movie version of "Can't Help Falling In Love" that I really like. This was Elvis' commercial peak!
Unfortunately the success of this album and the previous soundtrack "GI Blues" convinced Elvis' management that the way to make the quick buck was to make lighthearted comedy movies and associated soundtrack albums. From here on out the movies and soundtracks would sink in quality and sales.
I got carried away and forgot to look at the lyrics........2006-08-24
Blue Hawaii was Elvis Presley's biggest hit movie. And the Blue Hawaii soundtrack was his best selling album. Not his best album, but it is one of his better soundtracks. There are a fair amount of songs with silly lyrics like, "Ito eat like teeth are out of style" or "I'm a kissin' cousin to a ripe pineapple", but at least they have good melodies, and Elvis sings like he's having fun. And you can't go wrong with "Can't Help Falling in Love", one of the King's best ballads. The CD adds eight songs to the original album's 14, including "Steppin' Out of Line"(which is a song that was cut from the movie), and previously unreleased alternate versions of seven songs. Elvis fans should own this CD.

Excellent transaction. Would not hesitate to buy again from this seller. Product was delivered promptly and as described.
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

Released in 1995, the popularity of IZ's "E Ala E" album continues to grow till this very day. The album speaks of IZ's love for his Hawaiian people, along with the undying love he has for the human race. Messages of peace and love are carried throughout each cut on this album. "E Ala E" proves that IZ's voice, music and message will live on through the lives of his fans.

It's IZ, what more needs to be said?.......2007-05-12
Since I am not from Hawaii I don't profess to identify with the political and cultural aspects of IZ's music, so all I can really say is that I find IZ's music just plain nice to listen to, especially when its just him and his uke. Need to relax, need to kick back and drift away to the Islands then this will do it for you. Get rid of the pills and pick up a dose of IZ to calm the tensions of the day. Of course you'll have to resist to go out and purchase a one way ticket to Hawaii.....or will you?
So long, Beethoven!.......2006-10-24
A classical music buff, & up until August had never heard of IZ. In an airport in Botswana, awaiting a plane to Johannesburg (delayed for several hours), I observed a distinguished-looking man, sitting completely relaxed, with a smile on his face, listing to his iPod. Finally, out of boredom I commented about how un-stressed he seemed to be; he promptly passed over his earphones. WOW! It was Iz singing "Over the Rainbow" (a song I am completely and thoroughly sick of!) Of course, his version was familiar and for the first time in years, I loved the song. Unfortunately, I then forgot the artist's name. Thank goodness it came back to me.
Bought this CD at probably the last Tower Music Store in the nation, along with 15 others (all classical) and can't stop playing it. Right now I'm in the process of buying this album for a friend, along with all the rest of his collection.
So long, Beethoven! (Not really, but this is a whole new wonderful addition to my listening life.) I think IZ belongs in every top-notch music portfolio.
Hit or Miss.......2006-05-07
Odd that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (formerly a member of Hawaiian Renaissance band, the Makaha Sons of Niihau, and outspoken vocalist in the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement) would hook up with John DeMello, the son of Hawaiian music's whitest bandleader -- Jack DeMello (the latter of whom orchestrated ultra easy listening records in the '60s). Putting that aside, this album is really hit or miss for me.
When Israel is doing his beachboy-style songs (loose, comedic, played solo on the ukulele or with minimal overdubs) he provides a glimpse of the old Hawaiian spirit so lacking in contemporary Hawaiian music. Which is to say that most present-day Hawaiian music is so serious, that it almost sounds like Contemporary Christian Music. Israel's versions of "Kamalani" and "I Ke Alo O Iesu" are slick, sappy and overwrought with sentimentality. In other words, they are the opposite of the loose, mellow and cool sound inherent to beachcomber cuts like "Tengoku Kara Kaminari" and "Theme from Gilligan's Island."
Yeah, that's right... this strong native Hawaiian voice tackles the theme from Sherwood Schwartz's tacky, '60s go-go, beachcomber television show (starring TV beatnik Bob Denver). But in doing so, Kamakawiwo'ole puts his own spin on the song, first bringing an oceanside humor that was not on the original theme recording for the show's credits. But halfway through "Theme from Gilligan's Island," Israel turns the song into a loose politcal statement, as he reminds the listener that he has no need to come back from THIS island... back to a place where there are cars, pollution and government corruption. In that sense, the song connects on many levels, even though it seems like a silly idea at first glance.
"E Ala E" -- the opening track on this album -- is a fiercly political cry that works as a personal plead for Hawaiian civil rights and sovereignty over their own land. The field recordings of Hawaiian demonstrators marching and chanting in the background gives the song another layer of depth.
All in all, there's enough goodness going on here to get you past the sappy material. But there are better Kamakawiwo'ole albums out there, including his entire back catalogue with the Makaha Sons of Niihau, plus IZ's first two solo albums.
Relaxing Enjoyment.......2006-04-17
This is a beautiful combination of traditional Hawaiian and contemporary tunes, both tender and upbeat. I purchased this CD when visiting Hawaii for the first time, and have loved Iz's music ever since. This CD should be in anyone's collection who loves contemporary Hawaiian music and the versatile sound of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
Incredible music.......2006-02-28
Music for the soul. Buy it, listen to it, and have a wonderful uplifting experience. Iz's music makes me smile, laugh and cry. What a wonderful gift to the world!

Watch that Key.......2007-08-01
I was talking to a friend about a song on that album, just to make sure it was on there I looked it over and there it was, so I thought I would like to get that album, but not at this time I must have tapped a key and before I knew it I had ordered the album, but I am glad I did, so I had to thank my hand for it.
Excellent quality.......2007-07-30
I am very pleased with this CD. I was not a big Elvis fan while he was alive, but I have discovered what an amazing talent he was. The CD is excellent, the sound exceptional.
Elvis at his zenith.......2007-07-24
The crowning moment for the king of rock n roll came here. This concert represents Elvis' towering moment. His best 70s album, his greatest concert album, his best tv special, his greatest live performance. That does not mean it was down hill from here. There were great achievements that still lied ahead for him...but this moment captures Elvis at his absolute best. His voice was in full throttle on Steamroller Blues,You Gave Me A Mountain,My Way,I'll Remember You,It's Over and An American Trilogy. He knew exactly what he wanted from a song and was in full command of his talent. His ability to grab both a song and the listener are on full display during his rendentions of Welcome to my World and Something.See See Ryder,Burning Love and Suspicious Minds are classics and Elvis' versions of each during this concert might be their finest. This truly was the moment he had waited for.And he came thru...like he always did.
Elvis At The Top Of His Game.......2007-03-10
I have always believed that the reason Elvis Presley attained the title of The King was because he was always at his very best when faced with a challenge that forced him to give of himself everything he had, if not more. ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE is a prime example of this.
Broadcast around the world on January 14, 1973, though not seen in America until April of that year, ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE really captures this towering figure of 20th century American pop culture at a pivotal time. He had rescued a career that was in danger of becoming extinct in 1968 with the Comeback Special; he repositioned himself on record with his 1969 Memphis and Nashville recordings; and his 1972 Madison Square Garden concerts were screamingly spectacular. And then came this.
Setting aside the bombast of the stage show itself (a product of his Las Vegas routine), the sheer magnitude of Elvis' talent by itself is a wonder to behold even today. He throws in not only the great stuff that had already made him a legend ("Hound Dog"; "Love Me"; "Blue Suede Shoes", etc.), but far newer material such as James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues" (which soon became one of the King's 106 Top 40 hits). He also touches on gospel material such as "You Gave Me A Mountain", and country classics such as "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"--all of these things being integral to that uniquely American musical animal called rock and roll. It doesn't hurt either that his band includes fine people like guitar master James Burton, one of the giants.
But for me, the high point of this album is one of the King's biggest latter-day showstoppers, namely "An American Trilogy", Mickey Newbury's adaptation of two Civil War anthems ("Dixie"; "Battle Hymn Of The Republic") and an African-American spiritual ("All My Trials"). He had already done it on his Madison Square Garden album of 1972 with great results, but here the effect is even more stirring and deeply heartfelt. This is a great example of American patriotism from the deep soil of our nation that will be remembered long after the post-9/11 bromides of Toby Keith and Darryl Worley are mercifully forgotten, and it is only fitting that it is Elvis who should be the one to carry it off. As would be part-and-parcel of many of his shows from here on out, the King concludes with that classic song from BLUE HAWAII, "Can't Help Falling In Love."
ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE would go on to be among the King's biggest-selling albums ever, reaching #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart in May 1973 and selling over one million copies. Unfortunately, it would also be the last time that Elvis would ever really be able to get a challenge of this magnitude. Without opportunities like this, though he didn't stop making great songs, the burning passion the world knew him for was replaced by a life of extreme excess that ended painfully and tragically with his untimely demise at the age of 42 on August 16, 1977 at his Graceland mansion.
But when one thinks of what the man was able to achieve during his lifetime, it is easier to put those excesses into a perspective that helps to destroy the image propagated by the tabloids. Elvis was the King, but in many important ways, he was a lot like us--flawed but human. And that comes shining through on this album, one of his greatest albums ever.
For 'King' Lovers .......2007-02-14
If you grew up with and loved the "king," this is the ultimate. I listen to it over and over during car trips, and it's tremendous each time. His "American Trilogy" is a fantastic way to appreciate America.
