Everything about this CD (except listening to it), including its marketing, would lead you to believe that this is an interesting Near East/jazz hybrid. However, that simply isn't the case. It's safe to say that nothing of that part of the world (Hungary and Turkey, I believe, in this case) makes its presence felt on this recording. This is too bad, since that's why I bought it without ever having heard it.

That being said, the acoustic instrumental jazz on this album, focusing on the wind instruments, is pretty good. Think the long line of fairly-indistinguishable ECM releases, and you'll get the idea, although, to be fair, this recording is not as sterile as all that. This is a largely dark jazz, with conventional instrumentation and at least one (not entirely convincing) forray into "outside" playing. A pleasant CD, but takes no advantage of the intriguing possibilities of mixing jazz with Hungarian, etc. influences.

Also, for some reason, this sounds like many of the links heard during NPR.....

Album Description

Cafe Makam is a new group of musicians from diverse ethnic backgrounds that include Armenian, Greek, Macedonian, Sephardic, and French. Each player brings a unique perspective to danse orientale. The material on this recording is a wildly improvisational live presentation.

The name of the group is apt. This type of music is often played in coffee houses or cabarets, hence Cafe. Makam means scale and refers to the inherently modal nature of the music.
