Along with Cesaria Evora and Lura, Maria de Barros represents the West African island nation of Cape Verde. Her new CD follows her debut recording, Nha Mundo. Like her musical sisters, she sings her native land's mournful morna, the festive funana/ferro, and peppery coladeira rhythms and song genres. But where Evora and Luna are more tradition-bound, De Barros can mix things up, as evidenced by her salsa-fied number "Bo Ke Nha Boy," the samba-like syncopations of "Sol Di Manha," and her hypnotic version of the French Caribbean classic, "Caresse Moi." Her voice has a light and airy ring to it, which sounds good in her native, Afro-Portuguese Criuolo language - and complements the, synths, horns, accordion, percussion, and the ukulele-like cavaquinho. All told, de Barros, like her contemporaries, is poised to take her country's music to the future, without, it is hoped, forgetting its past. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Maria de Barros will make you smile!.......2006-12-22

Danca Ma Mi is an exceptional recording. I was drawn to it the first time I played it, but I appreciate it even more today, several months after the purchase, because it has remained in my system for so long. I consider myself unusually restless (and critical) as a listener, but I keep wanting to hear Danca Ma Mi--NOT those other fine and clever albums that are going into and out of my changer.

Maria de Barros and her stellar group of supporting musicians and background singers create uplifting music on this CD--it is warm, sweet, and infectious from beginning to end. If and when you find yourself a little stressed out (as I have been this holiday season) you will want to play the disk right away and listen all the way through; for me, this instantly does the trick, melting away my troubles and making me smile in spite of myself. Every cut has its charms, and each reveals a slightly different dimension of the artist; as I understand it Maria is influenced by the great Cesaria Evora, but she brings her own special touch to the sweet and lilting music of Cabo Verde. Every cut is a joy to hear, and Maria shows an impressive range. She is a folk singer, she is a pop singer, she is -- a chanteuse! ("Caresse Moi" leaves me breathless, in spite of its pop sensibilities and my own stubborn prejudices against "pop" music.)

Listen to Amor Luz, Oh Menel, Bo Ke Nha Boy, Roshinha, Oumai or any of the other shimmering tunes on Danca Ma Mi. No matter what Maria sings here, you don't have to understand Portuguese to appreciate it: you will feel and instinctively understand what she is emoting. Her expression is universal, heartfelt, and positive.

Don't miss this cd. Once you've listened a few times, maybe even after the first time, you'll know why I say, "Bravo, Maria de Barros! Muito obrigado! More, please, soon!"

5 out of 5 stars A Great Performance.......2006-04-04

The CD can only be topped by the live performance. They are a must see act.

5 out of 5 stars DEEE-lightful! Joyous, happy music.......2005-03-27

If you like Brazilian music, African music and Fado (Portuguese ballads) you are in luck; Maria de Barros has recorded the joyous music of Cape Verde in a well-produced and delightful CD of bouncy, tuneful music.

The music on this CD is reminscent of Brazilian music most of all, but there is a lot of the African influence. So if you are a fan of music from that band spanning the world from South America to West Africa, you will undoubtedly enjoy "Danca Ma Mi." As a party CD for those who put on Latin American sound, this is unsurpassed. I like listening to it when I want something lively but not harsh or jarring--it's some of the happiest music I've heard in a long while.

Cape Verde is an island nation that was settled by the Portuguese in 1462. The Portugese brought African slaves, and the population is a mix of Portuguese and African influences as a result.

There are a number of types of traditional music in Cape Verde, from Morna, a tango-like sound, to its child Coladeira, and also Funana from Chile (with accordian.) And then there is Batuco, a woman's genre, fast and funny. This album features a bit of each. If you like Afro-Brazilian sound, you will love this CD.

Cape Verdeans are found all over the world, as the island has poor weather and had frequent disastrous droughts and crop failures. They brought their music along--a surprisingly happy sound for a place that had more than its share of troubles. I recommend this CD MOST HIGHLY, especially to fans of Brazilian music, Salsa, Cuban music. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Danca Ma Mi: Maria de Barros.......2005-03-24

The title of Maria de Barros' new CD perfectly sums up what you want to do when you hear it: dance. While there are some slower mornas, the tempo of the CD is generally upbeat, with coladeiras that have a salsa flavor and some funana rhythms (using the ferro, a metallic instrument played with a spoon). Nearly all of the songs are original (i.e., not traditional), and I believe most are sung in the Portuguese criole used in Cape Verde (I don't speak Portuguese), which is a lovely language, soft and amenable to the rhythms. The mood of the songs ranges from yearning to passion to just simple joy. I can't give a CD a higher recommendation, except that you have to get her first CD, Nha Mundo (My World) as well. The new CD is definitely not more of the same, but it is just as good as her first. Danca Ma Mi is better than any other tonics or stimulants you can get and gets phenomenal when you dance to it! You should also go to see her live performances, which often turn into more of a dance and party than a sit down show; there is nothing like it.

Sparkling, full of life and intensity
is how I would describe these concertos
By Camargo Guarnieri.Guarnieri now one
of the best Latin-American composers
of the 20th century composed these
concetos beetween 1931 and 1963, the
Piano Concerto #1 is recorded here for
the first time. In the first Piano
concerto we hear a lot of Brazilian
percussion such as the cuica(Friction Drum)
and reco-reco(a scraper) use masterfully
especially in the final movement of
the first concerto. The Second Piano Concerto
is equally fun to listen to, and with a last
movement that opens with a tune that
one would expect to hear out the Rio
carnival. The last concerto #3, is
is also a great work. The soloist
Max Barros is wonderful, and so
are conductor Thomas Collin and
the Warsaw Philharmonic. Indeed
music full of life, emotion and
intensity. Five Stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling NeoClassical Piano Concertos with Brazilian Tinge.......2005-04-17

The name of composer Mozart Camargo Guarnieri was vaguely familiar to me only because I remembered that striking first name but I had never heard any of his music. He was born in São Paulo in 1907, one of nine children of music-loving Sicilian immigrants, and he had brothers named Bellini, Rossini and Verdi. After going by 'Mozart' most of his youth, he renounced the first name in early adulthood, apparently feeling it was presumptuous to be known by the name of such an indisputable genius, and from then on was known as 'Camargo Guarnieri.' He labored most of his life in the shadow of Heitor Villa-Lobos, but that didn't stop him from being a prolific composer. He was also an arts administrator and teacher, culminating in his appointment as director of the São Paulo conservatory. He wrote a public letter to all Brazilian musicians in 1950 that urged them to reject European academicism (atonality, serialism). He later rethought that, and indeed one of his piano concertos (not presented here) uses 12-tone methods. He wrote seven piano concertos and much solo piano music often played in Brazil but rarely anywhere else. On the basis of this disc I'd say that it deserves a wider audience. He was taken up by Leonard Bernstein as well as Aaron Copland, and indeed one of his symphonies, No. 4, is dedicated to Bernstein.

The three piano concertos on this disc (Nos. 1, 2 & 3) are of a piece. They are characterized by French-inspired tonality (he studied for a time in Paris with Charles Koechlin), Stravinskyan rhythmic inventiveness, jazzy, almost Gershwinian harmonies and, most striking, Brazilian dance and folk-song coloring. The outer movements have an irrepressible élan, the middle movements are bluesy and hauntingly melodic. Orchestrations is brilliant and expert and make use of many native Brazilian percussion instruments--e.g., the cuica (a friction drum), the chocalho (a rattle), and the reco-reco (a scraper); one has to wonder whether those instruments were easily available in Warsaw where these recordings were made!

The pianist, new to me, is Max Barros, himself a São Pauleño. He is clearly at home with the Brazilian idiom and is no mean performer. The playing is marked by crisp rhythmic thrust and clear passage work. In the middle movements he is capable of a songful legato. The Warsaw Philharmonic are veterans of recordings of music from around the world and they give the pianist able support; the conductor, Thomas Conlin, known to me primarily for his fine recordings of the music of George Crumb, is clearly in his element in this music. The recorded sound is clear and lifelike; it is slightly dry and this lends a clarity to the torrents of notes in the outer movements.

This is unfailingly tuneful, tonal, rhythmically exciting music and a worthy addition to Naxos' ongoing Latin American music series. One hopes we will hear more of Guarnieri's music from them.

On Nha Mundo, singer Maria de Barros makes her debut with a sensual but ultimately joyous mix of Cape Verdean music, which is a melting pot of traditional Portuguese, Cuban, Argentinean and West African styles. Much is going to be made of the fact that the young singer is goddaughter to the island country's greatest star, Cesaria Evora, but de Barros is smart enough to follow her own artistic path: Evora's music is often slow and bittersweet, carried by her deep and fragile voice; de Barros plays down the sad mornas and coladeiras in favor of galloping boleros and sambas, and her voice and phrasing is closer to Susana Baca than Evora. Singing in the Portuguese Creole dialect on Nha Mundo, which translates as "My World," she transcends the language barrier to give listeners a fun and friendly tour of the country's sun-drenched idyll. Highlights include the uplifting "Cabo Verde N'ot Era" and the softly swaying "Nha Primero." --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Lazy, lovely, jazzy Afro-Latin elements.......2004-09-02

Despite the charged attention given to music from the isle of Cabo Verde in recent years, Cesaria Evora remains the better-known of the Cabo musicians - but watch out Cesaria, Maria de Barros is right beyond you and coming up strong.
NHA MUNDO holds the same lazy, jazzy Afro-Latin elements which made Cesaria's works so compelling - with the added attraction of smooth vocals surpassing most of Maria de Barrlos' would-be competitors.

5 out of 5 stars Maria de Barros: Nha Mundo.......2004-04-05

Maria de Barros is a rare modern performer whose live performances may be even better than their studio CDs. I was already a fan of Ms. de Barros and went to see her recently at a live club performance. It was really more like a dance or party. There were many Cape Verdians there, including the Ambassador to the U.S. Ms. de Barros gave a very soulful, lively, heartfelt performance and encouraged all there to dance, or at other times, to sing along to what must be well-known songs in Cape Verde. She performed all the songs on her CD, as well as other songs that were just as good. While her style is similar to her godmother, Cesaria Evora, her tempo is more upbeat, but her connection to Cape Verde and her feeling for her people seem as deep. The songs on her CD range from romantic ballads to Cape Veridan "blues" -- morna -- to more upbeat dance coladeiras -- and a beautiful arrangement of the Brasilian song from the movie Black Orpheus -- Manha de Carnaval. As an interesting note, Ms. de Barros picked out Manha de Carnaval before knowing that it was one of her parents' favorites when they were falling in love. I would encourage anyone who is a fan of Cesaria Evora, world music, fado, or anyone who just enjoys a soulful, talented singer who has an ear for excellent songs (some of the songs on her CD are by her grandfather) to buy her excellent CD.

5 out of 5 stars Nha Mundo -- Maria de Barros.......2004-03-16

I can only second the comments of the previous reviewer. Maria de Barros is a hypnotic singer, with varying styles, from the reggae of the first song on the CD, Riberconzinha, to a nice variety of songs that range from romantic ballads to haunting melodies about Cape Verde. The CD ends with a beautiful and very interesting arrangement of a classic Brasilian classic Manha de Carneval. Maria's voice is sultry and heartfelt, uplifting but not simple.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing... follow the footsteps of her godmother Cesaria.......2003-09-20

I've heard her, a few months ago, and it did not take much time to realize how great she was. The CD is incredible! Musicians like Djin Job, Kalu Monteiro and Ze Rui complements the beautiful voice and well-written songs, but you don't really have to understand Capeverdean to appreciate the music. The coladeiras will move you and the mornas will make you envisage Cape Verde. A must have for any world music lover.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad actually..........2006-02-07

Though this album doesn't exactly represent the pinnacle of excellence in hip-hop, there are a few tracks on here that are worth a listen. This is especially true if you were/are a fan of either rap from the mid-90s or NBA basketball from that era. It's a plus if you happen to like both (as I did as a teenager back in the day).

Tracks of note on here are:

1) Malik Sealy - Don't Get Lost In The Sauce - An extremely "real" track about his upbringing, lessons learned from life, and his dedication and focus. It is actually of historical importance because Malik Sealy died unexpectedly a few years later... making this track all that much more important. The song as a whole (including beat and lyrics) is also quite good.

2) Cedric Ceballos f/ Warren G - Flow On - A popular west-coast anthem for it's time. It's sound embodies the prime of G-funk era music and is fun to listen to.

3) Jason Kidd - What The Kidd Didd - Though he pretty much just talks about how big he is, the song has a tight beat and is engineered well. It's actually pretty funny to listen to some of the lyrics now, but entertaining nonetheless.

4)Gary Payton - Living Legal And Large - Gary Payton is considered old skool now, but he was in fact "legal and large" in the 90s. The content in this song is enjoyable to listen to and the beat is worth mentioning too.

In sum, I guess this album targets a very niche audience... So if you happen to appreciate the NBA of the mid-90s or when rap was just beginning to become a worldwide phenomenon (or the intersection of the two), you might want to pick this one up.

Alberto Barros is one the icons of Colombian salsa. An artist and musician himself as well the arranger and masterpiece behind many Colombian bands. To own a solo cd by Alberto Barros is a treat in its own right. This cd is a sample of some of finest salsa Colombian style and really a continuation of Albert Barros' previous album. This one is without a doubt salsa but with strong nuances of other tropical rhythms which is a trade mark of Alberto's music and Colombian salsa in general. This album is enjoyable and danceable from start to finish. The only downfall IMO is it's too short! Que viva la salsa.
