There's a rule in commercial pop: don't bite the hand that feeds you. Translation? If you're getting love on TRL, it's best leaving well enough alone and tinkering only slightly with the sound that pays your bills. So you have to give Pink a whole heap of credit. The Philly-raised songbird may have made her rep with infectious and rugged pop-R&B hits like "There You Go" and the remake of "Lady Marmalade," but like the fuchsia coif she once sported, that sound is gone. In its place is a more driving alt-rock attack, liberally laced with some late-night blues and heartfelt lyrics that, while they sometimes come off like diary entries (the simplistic bon mot "Your pain is painful" in "Family Portrait"), are clearly Pink's thoughts, as opposed to words someone put in her mouth. Helping Pink express her inner Alanis are Dallas Austin, who produced the insistent rocker "18 Wheeler," and former 4 Non Blonde Linda Perry, who Pink has resurrected from one-hit-wonder status. Mixing up thumping beats, ("Get the Party Started"), with folksy confessionals, Pink's potent vocals and her honest determination make this a risk worth hearing. --Amy LindenAlbum Description

Album Description
With his silky smooth, straight-from-the-heart soulful style, Howard Hewett is gifted with one of the most instantly recognizable voices in contemporary music: with the 2007 release of his Groove Records' debut IF ONLY, his loyal worldwide audiences will be reminded of just why Howard Hewett has endured, sustained and maintained a solid career as a solo artist for over two decades. IF ONLY also represents a reunion of sorts for Howard who serves as executive producer on the album with Ralph Johnson, one of the founding members of Supergroup Earth, Wind & Fire. Howard's many fans will be thrilled that he's taken his time to release a new album, with such standout tracks as "Enough" which is already top 20 charter and climbing .The soon to be released follow up single, "I'll Be Right Here," and the title track, "If Only" is a further testament to Howard Hewett's enduring artistry and a reminder that when it comes to great music, good things truly do come to those who wait!Customer Reviews:
Howard Hewitt's new CD, "If Only".......2007-06-29
My fave song on his new CD, If Only, is "To Please U". We all remember back in the day when true love songs actually were meaningful - well, this is Howard Hewitt at his best. What saddens me is that I haven't heard this CD (or even Rick James' new CD, released around the same time), on local radio stations. It is sad that the balladeers of the 70's and 80's aren't recaptured in today's music. We need the spiritual message and spreading Love! This is why I will always be a fan of "Old School Music". That is where it was at!
There are several other songs that I just love on his new CD, "Is this True Love?" and "Can U feel me?". If you are a true Howard Hewitt fan, you will pick up this CD now! He is also on Rick James' new CD, Deeper Still, "Do you Wanna Play?". Amazon had a deal a few weeks ago on both CD's. Because of the samples and reviews, I went and bought both CD's. Love them! If you are a true fan and love that soulful sound unique to Howard Hewitt, pick up his new CD today, "If Only".
Enjoy!
Hearfelt and beautiful........2007-06-29
Ballads like "Is This True Love" ooze emotion where Howard is joined by Gerald Albright on sax.
And if you love ballads check out the searing slowie "Don't U Wonder 2". Old school style numbers like "I Wanna Know" maintain a mid-tempo groove.
Hewett has never sounded better.
Give this record a spin, it is worth it!

Simply Amazing.......2007-06-06
It is so hard to narrow down my favorites, but I will go with "If Only", "To Please U", "Can U Feel Me", "Is This True Love", "I Wanna Know", "How Do I Love You". The whole CD is beautiful. I also love how he gives glory and how he, in a mature way, sings about love, because love is where it's at. He also did a nice rendition with Gerald Albright on "Imagine". I just cannot stop gushing over this CD. It is modern, but signature Howard Hewett and the vocals are still impeccable.

'Emotions' Runs High and Shows Mariah's Vocal Range To Great Effect.......2007-07-07
It shows Mariah was no fluke, displaying notes and pitch-perfect vocals that even today very few female singers can match. But not all the songs are keepers. I usually play only the first 5 songs and skip the last 5. My favorite is still 'Make It Happen'. The power and range Mariah displays on this track is remarkable. She pierces the heavens with her high notes and enormous lung power. I think Mariah really sings this song like she means it because she's writing the song from personal experience to not give up on her dreams of 'Making It'.
I think Tommy Mottola used 'Emotions' as a follow-up CD to spotlight Mariah's voice more so than the songs themselves. You can hear every part of Mariah's vocal range in the choice of songs on this CD. Obviously her upper range gets more of a workout on this CD than any other one in her entire Sony/Virgin/Island catalog. I think 'Emotions' was released as a vehicle to show her vocal chops and it succeeded in every way.
I wouldn't say the quality of songs is right up there compared with her debut CD or later ones (especially 'Daydreams'), but her vocal high register has never sounded better. Keep that tea kettle whistling, Mariah !
This hasn't aged at all.......2007-01-21
I bought a copy of her self-titled 1990 debut, but I never did get around to owning a copy of "Emotions" (something that's going to change very soon). I don't why because I remember "Emotions," "Can't Let Go" (which, as much as I roll my eyes over love songs, has one of the prettiest melodies I've ever heard with a love song), and "Make It Happen" getting constant radio airplay in 1991 - and I enjoyed those songs each and every time.
Her lyrics were poetic and struck a chord with the then-teenager me, and her sound, while pop, had strong soulful overtones. She helped continue breathing life into a stale music scene and that feeling still resonates with me a little over 15 years after its release.
It can't be said enough that "Emotions" is classic 90s, is a great addition to the CD collection, and is Mariah at the top of her game.
And, best of all, the album's sound doesn't sound aged. - Donna Di Giacomo
Mariah Carey Causes Emotions: 4-4½ stars.......2006-07-26
The title-track Emotions was released to audience as the lead single, providing listeners with a contagious pop beat. The song displays Mariah's high pitch notes and awesome background vocals which include Trez Lorenz and David Cole. And You Don't Remember is a superb ballad where Mariah's pleading voice belts out how her lover does not remember the love, they shared. The chorus is a delight to listen too - simply wonderful. My favourite song on the album is up next; the splendid Can't Let Go. It is no wonder that many consider it among Mariah's best ballads to date. Released as a single, the groovy Make It Happen got stuck at the no.2 position, I recall. However, the teasingly song is a wonderful treat. The overall message of the song: You should never give up, work hard and your dreams will come true in the end. If It's Over, a collaboration between Mariah and Carole King, has a taunt of a jazzy mood to it. Mariah Carey belts out the chorus powerfully. Once again, I prefer the Unplugged version - however, this is purely a matter of taste.
You're So Cold starts of with Mariah's praticing her vocal cords, functioning as a build-up to the actual song. The lyrics are a tad annoying, yet the song is still quite joyous. Albums tend to get weaker at the end, which is also the case with Emotions. To Be Around You, Till The End of Time and The Wind are likeable songs, however they do not hold up well against the rest of the album's excellent songs. The ballad-like So Blessed is another highlight of mine. The dreamy melody culminates with the more aggressive chorus especially the belting of the words ''You are my heart'' followed by the softer ''My everthing'''.
Emotions is one of Mariah Carey's best studio-albums, in my opinion. The combination of brilliant pop ballads and excellent up-tempo songs are clearly present on the album. If you are a big fan of Mariah's poppier songs or crafted pop songs in general, Emotions will surely be a safe bet. The only complaint I have with the album is that some of the material is a tad weak compared to the brilliant songs, which are to be found on Emotions; however, this is hardly abnormal. Emotions is a very solid effort and a better album than Mariah's debut.
Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Fantastic.......2006-02-18
Standouts in this album include:
"Emotions" - a good dancing track that features Mariah's piercing vocals.
"Can't Let go" - a beautiful ballad. One of Mariah's best songs
"Make it Happen" - A description of Mariah's life prior to becoming a superstar. Very catchy and uplifting
"The wind" - Very last track of the album. Mournful, breathtaking vocals combined with Mariah's sombre voice. Truly Phenomenal
Emotions is a truly magnificent album, featuring a wonderful collection of songs, each one a true delight to listen to.

After the legendary Live at the Apollo and the even better Love Power Peace: Live at the Olympia, James Brown could be forgiven if this 1970 live set disappoints. But this is Brother James, so skip the forgiveness. Sex Machine is the bomb, capturing a thrilling moment in Brown's funky revolution. The disc features 12 hot and sweaty, and sometimes slinky, live cuts recorded with the James Brown Band in 1969, plus three more studio jams (including a 10-minute title track) with his next band, the great JB's. "Can I get into it?" James shouts at the top. Oh man--does he even have to ask? --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

The sounds of freedom.......2005-07-23
This album's finest moments are to be found in its tightly-played, compulsively danceable funk numbers, most notably the opening Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine, Brother Rapp (Part I & Part II), I Got the Feelin', and the high-octane closer Mother Popcorn. Driven by propulsive grooves and frenetic arrangements, these tracks and others like them all prove extremely effective when it comes to loosening inhibitions and provoking unconscious spasms of head-bobbing and foot-tapping. However, that's not to discount the record's emotional, horn-fueled balladry, led by the supremely soulful and musically complex Bewildered and If I Ruled the World. This set also throws in the instrumental double-shot of Lowdown Popcorn, which allows you to hear the band's instrumental chops if they weren't apparent already. All in all, Sex Machine is an essential document of the career of one of popular music's most important performers, and a must-buy for non-lame-o's everywhere.

Toni Braxton delivers Libra nearly a decade after she busted up the R&B landscape with her gut-wrenching appeal, on 1996's Secrets, that a wayward lover un-break her heart. Back then, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds was helming her records, and with his sound came a certain spun-silk smooth, wistful sensibility. Braxton may have been one of his better students, but Babyface's sound didn't hold up (for proof, check his own 2005 disc, Grown & Sexy). Where some breathy, smoky-voiced sirens might have called it a day, scampering off into career obscurity with their six Grammys in tow, Braxton resists the temptation to quit or to satiate the faithful with a yawny record; Libra, more than just a vehicle for evolving, adapting, and overcoming, is among the freshest, most tastefully done R&B discs to come out in 2005. Highlights belong strictly to the first half, with opener "Please" swinging wide the door for what will universally be recognized as this disc's two best tracks: "Trippin' (That's the Way Love Works)" belongs to that oft-strived-for league of songs that merit the tag "irresistible," and "Take this Ring," with its blaxploitation-film soundtrack effects, splices in just enough funk--and the right kind--to fuel a thousand replays. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

If Andre is 3000, then his Dungeon Family cohort Cee-lo Green might be 3074. Green spends his studio time wisely for this sophomore solo release, forsaking current urban-music trends to explore what they might have been--or might still be. The soul-machine moniker fits Green well on "All Day Love Affair" as his addictive crooning complements some perfectly placed strings and a throwback horn arrangement. What Green didn't tell you is that he's also a well-oiled spoken word ("I Am Selling Soul," "Sometimes") and postmodern gospel ("Living Again") machine too. The track that might attract the most attention is "Glockappella," which finds this former Goodie Mobster dissing his former crew. Outside productions from the likes of Timbaland, Jazze Pha, the Neptunes, and DJ Premier help Green to capture the full gamut of black music. Sure, Green might be considered an acquired taste for consumers not attuned to the whiny, scat-style rap flows he employs on the mesmeric "Childz Play." And his duet with the Pharrell Williams ("Let's Stay Together") brings together two soul vocalists with few notes at their disposal. Still, eccentricities aside, Soul Machine offers an enjoyable sampling of one of rap's most underrated talents. --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:

The Jackson 5's final two Motown albums were both of their time--the early disco era--and an unwitting look into a future of dance-floor smashes like "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." Dancing Machine quickly appeared as its title track (a remix of the Get It Together original) and it became one of the J5's biggest singles ever in early 1974. Hardly a slapdash release, it placed the hit between two thematically and sonically similar tunes ("She's a Rhythm Child" and "The Life of the Party") and offered the ambitious rock-disco fusion "I Am Love." Likewise, Moving Violation's biggest artistic successes were aimed straight at would-be hip shakers. A Brian Holland-produced remake of the Supremes' "Forever Came Today," "Body Language," and "Moving Violation" are the highlights, with a rare club remix of "Forever" the pick among two bonus tracks. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
One of their highly underrated albums........2006-07-18
To me I actally believe this is their best album of their Motown releases. Every song is great and their is no filler here(believe it or not). Michael's vocals were in peak form, and Jermaine's coleads are remarkable as usual. If your a true Jackson fan or fanatic this album is a must have. The Dancing Machine album is also exceptional with standouts being the afformentioned title song, "I Am Love","Life Of The Party", and "Whatever You Got I Want". These are the last to albums with Motown before they left (minus Jermaine and with brother Randy) to sign with Philadelphia International/Epic. Two great albums one great disc, and a ton of hits you'll be singing for a while!!!
Could Mike still hit those notes?.......2006-04-24
1) The group was clearly heading into the funk/disco era. There are some damn good dance tunes on both albums. However, there are two bubblegum songs on Dancin Machine. "If I don't love you this way" is one of them. Personally, I like this ballad, but the fact that Mike's voice was still in transition gives the song more of a childish feel. Both CDs have knockout songs and great ballads, but the Moving Violation album proves that the Bubblegum is gone for good.
2) Mike's voice is in peak form on these albums in my opinion. It's evident that his voice matured during the Dancin Machine recording sessions because he sounds more mature on some songs than on others (For instance, he sounds less mature on "What you don't know" than he does on most others) His voice wasn't childish at all on the Moving Violation CD. His voice was such an instrument. He could reach the top of his tenor voice in an instant. There's no falsetto, no hiccups, no grunting, no "hee-hees!!" The boy could SANG. Listen to "All I do is think of you" and you'll see what I mean. Damn, I wonder if he could still sing like that? Or was his voice change still incomplete? I'm not sure, but regardless, many of MJ's forgotten, but best vocal performances r on these albums. Quite honestly, the material is pretty good on both albums. I wonder why these albums flopped?
masterpieces from the jackson 5 .......2005-10-25
moving violation is funky too but it's full of hits and misses. Body Language, Breezy, call of the wild and a couple others are great but it doesn't flow as well as dancing machine though I give it to them for bringing fans the funk in their music before leaving motown to join epic
The Aftermath of Dancing Machine.......2005-10-19
The mature J-5 delivers again.......2005-08-28
Although DANCING MACHINE (1974), entitled as such to capitalize on the success of the single (which was originally on GIT), has several different producers, they all attempted to keep the same theme in mind: to come up with funky and exciting sounds for the J-5, and that they do. Opening with the fantastic nearly eight-minute funk/rock dance groove of "I Am Love", you know that you are in for something special. Jermaine primarily handles the leads on this song, with Michael coming at the bridge. "Whatever You Got, I Want" is bluesy and has a slinky-type of feel with great lyrics. "She's a Rhythm Child" is basically a knockoff of "Dancing Machine", but it's not all that bad. The single edit of "Dancing Machine" is next, and nothing more need be added about the extraordinary appeal of this song.
Next is the J-5 dance classic, the quick-paced "Life of the Party", an all too-short song I would love to hear remixed to be a bit longer. "What You Don't Know" is another funky dance jam, then we have two great ballads back to back: "If I Don't Love You This Way" (Michael on lead) and "It All Begins And Ends With Love" (Jermaine on lead). DM closes out with "Mirrors of My Mind", keeping the funk/dance theme intact.
Most of the tracks on MOVING VIOLATION were produced by Brian Holland of Holland-Dozier-Holland fame. Holland had produced a great solo album for Michael entitled FOREVER MICHAEL earlier that year (1975), and it was a good move to extend that collaboration to producing some solid tracks for the J-5. Even though by this time, the brothers were not happy with Motown's treatment of them, MV is one of the best albums that they ever recorded. Not as funky as GIT or DM, but it is technically their last on Motown and Jermaine's last appearance with his brothers, so they did go out with a bang. An old Supremes track from 1967 that was not a hit for those ladies but did fairly well for the J-5, "Forever Came Today" was the big hit from this album. Reworked into a driving 6 minute disco anthem, "Forever" will have you looking for your dancing shoes. "Moving Violation" is another funky disco cut, with clever lyrics...reminds you of "The Love You Save" theme-wise. The sexy dance tracks "(You Were Made) Especially for Me", "Honey Love" and "Body Language" (another well-known track from this album) increasingly moved the brothers into more mature waters. Most notably, "Especially For Me" has a hint of the Philly Sound that the Jacksons would take on their first two albums for Epic/CBS. Michael's vocals on the gorgeously harmonious "All I Do Is Think of You" are simply beautiful and further proves that his voice made a seamless transition from boyhood to adolescence. "All I Do" is the only ballad on MV and a Quiet Storm radio classic, and still extremely popular today. The final three tracks, "Breezy", "Call of the Wild" and "Time Explosion" has futuristic touches of lite jazz and rock, material the brothers began to get into way back on GIT and on "I Am Love" from DM.
Two bonus tracks are included as well: a sweet ballad with Jermaine on lead vocals, "Through Thick and Thin", sounds like a throwback to the SKYWRITER album - and another mix of "Forever Came Today", although I can't really hear much difference between this one and the original, except that the second half of the song is completely instrumental.
These two albums together are a perfect combination! As much as I enjoy the J-5's earlier classic work, I feel DM/MV are far more interesting and artistically challenging. If you love dance music and the Jackson 5, then this is the CD for you!! Party over here!!
