After Chris Hillman dragged new friend Gram Parsons into the Byrds, they made an album as close to a country masterpiece as a rock act could ever make. In fact, the only tunes better than the definitive covers here of songs by Bob Dylan ("You Ain't Going Nowhere"), Guthrie ("Pretty Boy Floyd"), and the Louvin Brothers ("The Christian Life") are Parsons's originals, especially the incomparable "Hickory Wind." Sweetheart wasn't the first country-rock album, but with its gorgeous three-way harmonies and sweet pedal steel, it remains the best. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Right turn successfully negotiated.......2007-07-25

With GP fronting the new ensemble, along with the likes of Roger (Jim) McGuinn, Chris Hillman, and several guitarists of renown, Clarence White, and Jaydee Maness and Lloyd Green on pedal steel, this album proved to be a very succesful right turn towards country and folk roots music for the reassembled Byrds, who were no longer content simply to resemble an American Beatles, which they could never have been anyway, with or without David Crosby. Their folk influences came at first-hand, rather than second, and not just because Bob Dylan had just smoked them up in a limo. All these folk and alt-country veterans turned loose on a few classics by the likes of Merle Haggard and the by-now seasoned Parsons--he, like Hillman and Mcguire, having been in performing bands since their early teens--produce a classic in the same manner as Alson Kraus and Union Station's first efforts of far more recent vintage, only electrified. These fellows played the Grand Old Opry, as best they could, and learned overnight just how hard it was to break into that mob, even with the blessings of folks like Haggard and a fellow in black named Cash, and now were singing the High Lonesome as well as it has ever been sung. Contractual obligations to a prior record label (Lee Hazlewood's A&M) at first destroyed Parson's solo and lead efforts on "Hickory WInd" and "One Hundred Years Ago", leaving these projects in the hands of the very capable McGuinn and Hillman, who did very well, nonetheless.

But it must have been quite a disappointment to Parsons at the time, who was only with the band for a cup of coffee, jumping ship in England to pursue the Stones, and because of his refusal to tour in apartheid South Africa. All this backstory, however, does not give you a good sense of the sheer great musicianship involved here, however, nor does it tell you one important fact you really need to know, that here in teh reissue/remaster version, the original Parsons leads on "Wind" and "One Hundred Years" several other cuts are included, allowing the listener to play with the album songlist, compare McGuinn's still-notable performance to Parson's impassioned and absolutely commited versions, and guess what would have been the effect on record sales if kids could have gotten a taste of the "Country Soul" or "Cosmic American Music" Parsons was attempting. My own guess is that the band would have fallen short of its stated goal of roping in the country crowd of that time, regardless of the sincerity and passion of the band's renditions. Things had already gotten too damn political, with the Country crowd being all mixed up with Nixon's "Silent Majority", and simple resentment of these boys' anti-war, pro-drug and rebellion aura still doing them disservice, as far as widening their audience goes. A great semi-flop on the charts, a classic of alt-country genius, appearing in its new expanded state, should not be missed by Parsons fans, or any old-time country fans who never caught on to the rather watered down music of the Eagles, and their ilk. This is a bargain, by the way, as is the Burrito's anthology currently shown here at about half-price.Hot Burritos! The Flying Burrito Bros. Anthology 1969-1972

2 out of 5 stars It's just not that good.......2007-07-05

Sweetheart of the Rodeo has a reputation, of course, as one of the best and most influential albums of all time. And, well, it was tremendously important , almost singlehandedly inventing country rock. The fact is that I'm not a big country fan, and that ruins the listening experience for me. Now, I'm all for Johnny Cash, and when Neil Young or the Rolling Stones whip out the pedal steel, the results are often entertaining. Hell, I even think the Crosby/Clark/McGuinn/Hillman/Clarke lineup might've been able to make country-rock sound good.
One problem I have with this album are the two preachfests The Christian Life and I Am a Pilgrim. I think both are overwrought and painful. You're Still on My Mind is the stereotypical sappy country ballad; Pretty Boy Floyd is a good Woody Gurthie song mutated thanks to banjo and fiddle; You Ain't Goin' Nowhere is an insult to Dylan's excellent original, though not the group's worst Dylan cover (that would be either the space-metal This Wheel's on Fire or the toothless Positively Fourth Street), and Nothing Was Delivered indeed delivers nothing (hard to believe it's a Dylan song!) Only two self-penned songs appear on this album: one (the swaying Hickory Wind) is a classic song that even I'll admit to liking; the other (100 Years from Now) is just more brainless sap. The rest is good, though: even the syrupy Born in a Prison and the cliched Blue Canadian Rockies pack soem emotion. And I do like You Never Miss Your Water.
This is probably my favorite Mach II Byrds album, but that's not saying much: Notorious Byrds Brothers, Untitled and Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde all simply leave me wondering what the hell happened to the Byrds.

5 out of 5 stars One of country-rock's greatest moments........2007-05-29

In 1968, infighting and strife had reduced the Byrds to two members, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. Although they were both incredibly talented musicians, the two couldn't agree on a direction for the band: McGuinn wanted their next album to be a double LP that tracked the development of American music from bluegrass to Moog-based prog rock, while Hillman preferred to focus on the band's folk and country influences. The disagreement was rendered moot when the band hired guitarist and pianist Gram Parsons, who persuaded the duo to record an album of what he had dubbed "cosmic American music," a mixture of folk, country, gospel, and rock. The resulting album was a commercial flop (reaching #77 in America and not even charting in the U.K.) and a source of further contention within the group (Parsons was fired shortly after the album's release, and Hillman left the band soon afterwards).

Which is a shame because Sweetheart of the Rodeo is an incredible album. The songs are a brilliant mixture of gin-soaked honky-tonk, bleary-eyed Americana, and impeccable pop savvy. It's fun, engaging, and atmospheric, capable of invoking the breadth and depth of American music at its very best. Just listen to that oppener, an absolutely stunning version of Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere." The Byrds were always excellent at reinterpreting Dylan's music, and this is no exception: It combines surreal, ethereal lyrics with McGuinn's dreamy vocals and a lush musical background that incorporates entranced guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and serenadeing organs. The end result is a beautiful, dreamlike tune that perfectly encapsulates Parsons' vision of American music. And that's just the first song on the album! "I Am A Pilgrim" and "The Christian Life" are excellent renditions of classic gospel songs. The former is a gentle swirl of fiddles, mandolins, and genuinly reverent vocals, while the latter features some marvelous harmonies (not surprising, considering that it was originally written by the Louvin Brothers). Meanwhile, the group's take of the soul standard "You Don't Miss Your Water" is a slice of heartwrending melancholia with some truly gorgeous vocals and instrumentation that'll make you forget all about Stax. "You're Still On My Mind" is pure gin-soaked bitterness, complete with saloon-storming piano. The cover of Woody Guthrie's classic "Pretty Boy Floyd" is a classic in its own right, a dizzying celebration of twirling banjos and slippery fiddles. Guthrie's lyrics, meanwhile, come off as pure poetry. Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind" (one of the only two songs on the album to be written by a member of the group) is a truly beautiful ballad with a lilting, haunting vocal. "One Hundred Years From Now" (also written by Parsons) features a superb cascade of guitars and drums, as well as some sky-scraping vocals. "Blue Canadian Rockies" flows and churns like a river, gently winding its way through a sing-along chorus and some delicate, yearning vocals. A cover of Merle Haggard's "Life In Prison" positively brims with desperation and regret. The album concludes with another Bob Dylan tune- "Nothing Was Delivered" closes the proceedings on a solemn, haunting note, a maze of eerie melodies and layered instrumentation.

The result is a masterpiece, a scintillating slice of Americana that can stun any music fan, weather or not they like country. Get this; you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Transitional Byrds.......2007-05-24

Once again, the Byrds are in a state of transition. Too bad they were not to last much longer in this guise, for many reasons. The price is right and the listening is mellow. A top 20 group/personnel of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetheart of the rodeo.......2007-02-19

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars What more could one ask for?.......2007-06-27

Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).

3 out of 5 stars Definitive Is Right.......2007-02-27

I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO.......2007-02-11

Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.

5 out of 5 stars American Music at its Highest .......2007-02-04

If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.

With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Copland.......2007-01-09

This sonically spectacular disc features three of Aaron Copland's most beloved Americana scores. Drawing on American folk themes, Rodeo and Appalachian Spring originated as ballet music, but they have found a larger life as light classic staples. They are briskly conducted by Louis Lane and played with élan by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. --Sarah Bryan Miller

I bought it as a gift and the receiver LOVED it and plays it frquently.

5 out of 5 stars Copland performed at its best.......2005-12-31

This CD is one of my favorites in my classical collection. Several years ago, I borrowed this recording from the library, and enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought my own Copland CD. I got the CD containing the New York Philharmonic's performance of Appalachain Spring (conducted by Bernstein), but was sorely disappointed. After a few months of searching (this was pre-Amazon days), I tracked down this CD and bought it. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is superb. I highly recommend this CD for any Copland fan, or anyone who wants to have a "token" classical CD.

5 out of 5 stars Lane and Copland and Atlanta, what a great team!.......2001-01-30

The performance by all is first-rate; and the sonic picture is terrific!

The interpretation of Appalachian Spring is one of my absolute favorites--I treasure it.

Atlanta sounds world-class. Worth the money, despite the short measure of the disc!

Shooter Jennings's 2005 debut, Put the "O" Back in Country, outlined the artistic differences--and similarities--between himself and his parents, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. This second time out, his tight, raw trio bristling behind him, his vocal roar remains less weathered, though he deliberately, momentarily evokes Waylon on "Some Rowdy Women," the darkly futile "Hair of the Dog," and "Little White Lines," a fearful, foreboding tale of cocaine abuse. His reflective, vulnerable side emerges on the sorrowful "The Song Is Slipping Away" and the painfully contrite ballad "Aviators." Sly humor drives a revival of Hank Williams Jr.'s "Living Proof" that begins by paying homage to the original, luring the listener into momentarily believing that Jennings, too, is desperate to free himself from a famous daddy's shadow. It is, of course, a brilliant fake-out. Near the song's end, he and the band flip right into the famous instrumental vamp Waylon used on so many of his hits, a wise-assed move worthy of Waylon himself. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars GO SHOOTER!.......2006-12-07

Shooter is just the best! Every review that said the good music is on the road and not in Nashville is so true! I saw Tim and Faith this past summer and it was a let down. Shooter is so much more a real muscian and talent. Good country / southern rock is alive and well with Shooter Jennings. I first heard these songs last New Year's Eve when I saw him in concert. I got the album on release day. It is the best. It reminds me of the music I grew up with--Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie, Waylon, with some old classic rock. You will not be disappointed if you are a southern rock/real country music fan! Go see him in concert too! The best!

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-11-21

If you like country music but you think yer gonna puke everytime you have to suffer through a "country" song from Nashville these days, and you happen to like classic rock, you would probably appreciate what Shooter's trying to do here. Folks, this is the Real Deal. I don't mean real country or real rock - this is a hybrid - I mean he's making music that is honest and down to earth. A flash in the pan, he's not. He's going to be around for awhile.

4 out of 5 stars Shooter does it again.......2006-11-05

This album has it all: *actual* country music, a couple of rockers and humour (Aviator). The music that's on here puts mainstream country radio to shame. See Shooter live if you get a chance. You won't be disappointed.

Shooter is back and still riding high. This CD is a pretty good CD. I love the southern rock style Shooter brings to the table.
My favorite song on this CD is Hair of the Dog. There are alot of other songs that come off here good as well but in the end I think this disc falls a hair short of his first master piece. Keep up the hard work Shooter and keep on keepin' on.

5 out of 5 stars Sweethearts Of Country Music.......2007-07-30

The Sweethearts Of The Rodeo are definitely sweethearts of country nusic. These 2 ladys (sisters) can really sing their heart out and the harmony blend on their singing is sensational. Their music sounds like the country music of the early 60's to early 70's. "Midnight Girl/Sunset Town" reminds me of a night down south in a small town. "Hey Doll Baby" has a rock-a-billy sound to it. Other good songs are "Since I Found You", "Chains Of Gold", "Satisfy You", "Blue To The Bone", a classic 60's song sound, The Beatles classic, "I Feel Fine", which they do a great job on. This is a very good buy. 2 LP's on 1 CD. The Sweethearts Of The Rodeo may be out of country music but their music lives on forever.

I used to own an old cassette of theirs and played it untill it fell apart. I had looked in stores over the years for a CD and could never find one, untill now! I love listening to their songs, they have a wonderful sound.

5 out of 5 stars Brief stardom for rocking country sisters.......2003-04-19

Janis and Kristine Oliver began singing as a duo in 1973 but it was not until 1986 that they hit big. Though their music was firmly rooted in tradition, they managed to give it enough of a contemporary edge so that they could appeal to a wider audience. Back then, Janis was married to Vince Gill. By the time that Vince reached his own peak, the Sweethearts of the rodeo were already past their commercial peak, though they continued to record excellent albums.

This twofer covers their peak commercial years, including all their hits. Their biggest hits were Since I found you, Midnight girl sunset town, Satisfy you, Blue to the bone and a sensational cover of the Beatles classic I feel fine. The other tracks here include many fine original songs, plus a cover of the Everly Brothers classic, So sad to watch good love go bad.

Janis and Kristine could sing ballads, but what they really liked to do was rock. This is good time country music at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Sweethearts Take Me Back to My Youth!!!.......2001-10-24

When I sent for this CD, I expected to have a bit of nostalgia for the good-old-days, but I wasn't really sure that I would enjoy the music. Needless to say, it's great for old fans like me and for new fans who may not have heard their harmonies. If you like music, you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sweethearts of the rodeo are just that, sweet. Real sweet........2001-03-23

Sweethearts of the Rodeo is a truly excellenty performed, and produced album. Janice Gill (Country great Vince Gill's wife) is supurb, and Kristine Arnold helps out all the way, and she does it great. There are eight tracks on this CD, and seven of them could make it on their own. This is a well put together, well produced, and well recorded album. In short, this is great. If you like country, you'll love this. BTW: Anybody out there in country land know what Sweethearts of the Rodeo actually mean? Lets see how many real Country folk we have out there. Give us some feedback. Christopher L. Ford.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding "Canyon"; "Rodeo" Rivals NYP.......2007-01-05

Close your eyes and be transported to the Canyon. In this remastering of a 1960 recording, Morton Gould shows his chops as a superlative conductor and interpreter of this Grofe classic. The work itself is wonderful, but Gould and his orchestra provide nuances that absolutely delight. Of the five movements of "Grand Canyon Suite", the final, "Cloudburst", ceases becoming music and is elevated to pure sensory experience. It is no longer notes on a page finely executed; it IS the sky, the wind, the sheets of rain (a sheer, shimmering slide of sound), the thunder, and it is perfect. The four prior movements are nearly as excellent, with the second, "Painted Desert", casting an eerie shadow over the listener's mind with spellbinding brush strokes. This is a performance delivered with painstaking care.

Gould's treatment of Copland's works, recorded three years earlier, were of great personal interest, as one of my earliest exposures to "serious" music was the great Bernstein recording of "Rodeo", and "Buckaroo Holiday" in particular. Surprisingly, Gould and company give the NYPO a run for its money. They are just as energized, brash and even raw (hear the horns, and it's fitting) as New York; ditto the "Gun Battle" episode of "Billy". Gould threw himself into Copland's scores and whipped his musicians into a frenzy when called for, and the results place Gould's readings of these two pieces of Americana right behind Bernstein.

This CD - beautifully remastered - is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Superb recordings of American classics........2004-04-27

I thoroughly agree with all other reviewers (though I wish some would spell Copland's name right!) Morton Gould conducts with great verve and sensitivity. "Rodeo" is terrific and it also includes the seldom heard "Honky-Tonk Interlude" which is a delight in itself.
The Grand Canyon Suite is a highlight with its marvellous orchestration and melodic richness. Although the score is influenced by a number of composers such as Dukas, Ravel, Respighi and even Richard Strauss, it nevertheless feels entirely
original. "On the trail" is beautifully rhythmical, one can really feel the trotting
of the donkeys, and the sound effects are pure joy. Note the
ee-ah-ing of the donkeys, so superbly part of the music. (somewhat reminescent of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream overture.) The Cloudburst is a sonic triumph.
This recording comes from 1957, but digitally remastered. Sound is demonstration quality. Still probably the best available, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Copland and Gould - LSC-2195.......2004-02-12

I've heard Copland conducting these two works on recordings and I've heard the famous NYPO/Bernstein's 1960 recording of these two works on Columbia Records, yet Gould and his Orchestra fills in the blank spaces that was left out in previous and recent recordings.

He takes his troup to NYC to Manhatten Center, in Oct of 1957, and have the legendary RCA producer, John Pfeiffer and Lewis Layton, produce and engineer this recording session to be encaptured on 3-track tape (where the "Billy the Kid" was released on RCA "New Orthophonic tape recording" - the BCS-130), then to eventual vinyl (LM/LSC-2195). Gould, being somewhat of an arrangement conductor in the 50's, manage to pull the stops out in how these two Copland pieces are to be presented-to where the listener can feel that they themselves are back in the Wild, Wild West of the 1880's. He doesn't rush through these two pieces like some other conductors do. Gould takes his time trying to tell the story within the music. He uses emphasis, emotion, tempo and dynamics where it should be per each chapter in a story. Excellent listening for all!

This BMG "Living Stereo" release of the LSC-2195 Copland/Gould is a faithful reproduction as it can be of the original vinyl release.

5 out of 5 stars Gould conducts Copland and Grofe.......2003-11-21

It may surprise some to discover that American composer/conductor Morton Gould conducted such fine performances of other American composers' music. These RCA Victor "Living Stereo" recordings are vivid, excellent proof that Gould was a really fine conductor and not just of his own music.

The performances of the suites from Copland's ballets "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" are among the best ever recorded. They benefit not only from Gould's wonderful sensitivity and appreciation but from excellent playing by the "pickup" orchestra and the still remarkable "Living Stereo" recording process, in which RCA used only three microphones and advanced mastering techniques.

Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" was a "labor of love" as the skilled composer/arranger spent considerable time carefully depicting his impressions of one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. Grofe had been a very successful arranger for Paul Whiteman and is still remembered for the very first orchestration of George Gershwin's "An American in Paris," premiered by Gershwin at the piano with Whiteman conducting in New York's Aeolian Hall in February 1924.

Grofe composed a number of original orchestral works in later years and the "Grand Canyon Suite" is probably his best. It contains memorable melodies and is skillfully orchestrated throughout. It so impressed Arturo Toscanini that he recorded it in 1945 for RCA Victor, under the supervision of the composer. Grofe himself conducted a recording of the suite for Everest Records in 1960. Gould's recording is excellent. The final movement, depicting a spectacular thunderstorm, is absolutely awesome. I think this recording may surpass an earlier favorite, also recorded for RCA Victor, by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston "Pops" Orchestra.

This is all very fun and very exciting American music.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative performance of Copeland.......1999-12-26

Billy the Kid & Rodeo were both etched in my soul when as a young boy I listened along with my mother. This performance by Morton Gould remains for me above any other that I have heard and I have heard many given my love for them. This is a re-issue of an original 3 microphone/3 track TRUE stero recording made by RCA in their 'Living Stero' series and originally recorded in 1957. A must have for Copeland listeners. It is a bonus that it also contains 'Grand Canyon Suite.'

4 out of 5 stars Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26

Here's a great introduction to the popular music of Aaron Copland. When "Fanfare for the Common Man" begins, sparks of recognition will fly for most listeners. This song has been everywhere: presidential inaugurations, the olympics, commercials, movies, etc. Some flatten it as hopelessly clichéd, while others find it moving and inspiring. Copland also reprised it in the finale of his Third Symphony. Arguably Copland's most famous piece, "Appalachian Spring" closes the CD. In between, more great Copland: excerpts from 'Rodeo' (apparently the beef lobby has appropriated "Hoe-Down" as one of their themes); a great vocal rendition of "Simple Gifts" and a large chunk of another of Copland's best known works: "Billy the Kid". The only confusing piece is the "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" from Appalachian Spring when the entire Appalachian Spring is already included. Seems slightly redundant.

Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.

Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars A Great American Album.......2004-02-13

This is a great album representing true patriotic American music. Songs like "Hoe-Down" are lively and energetic and give rememberance to what one can imagine as the true American spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Must have this one..........2002-09-17

I like all types of music, I wanted this album because I liked the song "RODEO" that is used on the beef commercials. This CD has made me into a Copland fan. It has many great songs. If you want a CD that says "I am an American." This is it. I am sending copies to a friend in Bombay and Tel Aviv. This is who I am put to music.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Band that you've never heard of!.......2007-01-09

This group is SO good! Their music has a variety of the usual influences: rock, country, and folk. Their songwriting is excellent; they have great harmonies, intelligent lyrics, good voices (all take turns with lead and harmony vocals,) and all three members make excellent contributions to the group. Basically, in their native Canada, this is a supergroup! All three of these guys have great solo careers, but still make time to record with the band, too.

I know that since this CD is an import, you can't listen to clips of this on Amazon. However, you should be able to listen to clips of their CDs "Bark" and "Kings of Love" here. ("BARK" is an excellent introduction and "Kings of Love" is another great one,) but you may just have to take my word on them.

If you like John Hiatt, Neil Young, and Willie Nelson then you will FALL IN LOVE with this album!!!!

Amazon.com essential recording

Toronto-based Blue Rodeo was purveying its own alternately sunny, grizzled mix of country and rock before the alternative country boomlet made it fashionable, achieving stardom north of the border but nary a blink of recognition in the U.S. This self-produced 1993 album, recorded mostly live at the band's farm and released the following year in the U.S., brought them belated stateside fans partly because of the alternative country trend, partly because the set was more lyrical and explicit in its country accents. As transparent, and unapologetic, Neil Young fans, this was Blue Rodeo's Harvest, distinguished by the poles of its songwriting and singing team, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. Cuddy's clear, soaring tenor provides a romantic foil for Keelor's smokier, rougher-edged vocals, and together they write brooding rock ballads ("5 Days in May"), ringing, deceptively uptempo loser's anthems ("Hasn't Hit Me Yet"), and convincing country ballads ("Bad Timing"), as well as spacier rock dirges ("What Is This Love," featuring Sarah McLachlan). --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly Beautiful! "Kinda Like Those Sunsets...........2007-07-23

...that leave you feeling so stoned." This record is a high water achievement not only for Canadian alternative-country rockers, Blue Rodeo, but it also qualifies as being one of the best alt.country records of the 1990's. Co-songwriters Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor composed ten stunningly original and wildly romantic songs that speak of life's and love's mysteries and they brilliantly evoke the landscapes of their native Canada as metaphors that add context to those mysteries of human emotion. From out in the middle of Lake Ontario, from a restaurant `round the bend', to the shores of Pyramid Lake, to the waves on English Bay, and to the dance of the Northern Lights; natural settings, as well as the rain and the sun, all serve to ground the listener on a lyrical journey through the complexities of life's circumstances and events that defy rational understanding. Familiar situations such as losing love, feeling alienation, being hoodwinked and robbed, imagining seeing space ships on a camp out, and the joys of finding love, weave seamlessly through this song cycle. That seven of the 11 songs on "Five Days in July" form the core of Blue Rodeo's live in concert repertoire is testament to how powerful these songs connect with anyone who's ever romanced to, danced to and reflected upon them.

The musicianship is fully accomplished from Greg Keelor's blistering guitar solos and rough hewn vocals, to Jim Cuddy's beautiful and heart wrenching singing, to Kim Deschamps's delightful pedal steel and slide guitar fills, to James Gray's accordion flourishes, and to Bazil Donovan's subtle bass and Glenn Milchem's understated yet steady drumming. This record is a tight ensemble effort with special guest appearances from Sarah McLachlan (piano and vocals), and Colin Linden (guitar). On this one record, Blue Rodeo took alternative country rock to a new level and dimension imprinted by their uniquely Canadian style. It is a timelessly melodic and hauntingly beautiful (and occasionally whimsical) meditation on the mysteries of life and love. This is one for the ages! Has it hit you yet!?

I love it and listen to it all the time and when i'm sat in my house in the United Kingdom it reminds me of how amazing my time was in Canada and what a fab place it is and how i wich i was back there.xxx

5 out of 5 stars Canadian GODS.......2005-12-25

Blue Rodeo, out of Canada where they are rightfully GODS, continues to fly under the US radar...what a shame, especially when one stacks Blue Rodeo against lesser talents. "5 Days In July" is the gemstone of this richly talented group. Combining elements of The Eagles, The Byrds, Poco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, twinges of psychedellic memories, 60's style chord work *which comes off VERY nice* and at times, vocal harmonies which bring a sweet hint of The Everly Brothers, this group, which can rock with the best or slow it down to a nice mellow, has a sound of their own. At once, the lyrics are memorable and catchy. The vocalists, Cuddy and Keelor, each bring their own qualities which never grow old with Cuddy having impressive range while Keelor brings at times, a nice raspiness with a clever edge. "Bad Timing", one of the great tunes off this gem, would soar on the country charts if given a chance. With the exception of "Til I Gain Control Again" *brilliantly covered earlier by Crsytal Gayle and later by Willie Nelson*, all the tunes are penned by Cuddy and Keelor, as are their efforts on other Blue Rodeo albums. I had the great pleasure to see/hear this remarkable group at The Ramshead Tavern in Annapolis, Maryland. They DID NOT disappoint. If you're looking for GREAT music outside the usual stuff played endlessly on formatted radio, this is a MUST! I would also suggest their DVD, "Burning Snowmen", which chronicles them over time. If you can, find a way to one of their concerts...

As we find out in their only history/live DVD called just * IN STEREOVISION * BLUE RODEO...had many influences and not just some American ones...And in the 1960s there was a TORONTO SOUND!

Recorded in Northern Ontario , Canada at a friend's farm , they invited...SARAH McLACHLAN...to enjoy the party and she would help sing the song...DARK ANGEL...and there is some video from that weekend , on the DVD * IN STEREOVISION *

DARK ANGEL...is a almost solo acustic...GREG KEELOR [Sarah McLachlan]...classic!

HASN'T HIT ME YET...You'll love this song by a lake and camp fire but don't have a broken heart...GREG...can write a great tune!

FIVE DAYS IN MAY...another...JIM CUDDY...country/folk classic.

BAD TIMING...A beautiful...JIM CUDDY...country love ballad.

CYNTHIA...JIM CUDDY...country/rockin out.

Those are just examples of the great songs on this fine CD , all with a mix of Canadian country and rock , keyboards , Neil Young , The Band / U.S. country , r and b and Elvis / The Beatles / The Bee Gees!

I would also highly recommend the DVD called * IN STEREOVISION *
For a musical history and live/tape of...BLUE RODEO...videos!

And some of their CDs...OUTSKIRTS...LOST TOGETHER...CASINO...PALACE OF GOLD...NOWHERE TO HERE...ARE YOU READY...and the 2 disc live CDs...JUST LIKE A VACATION!
