Sheetal grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where her musician parents had settled after emigrating from the Gujarat in India. By age 5, she had already embarked upon studies of Western violin and Indian classical vocal traditions. Judging by her debut album, the young singer-composer's mature style owes as much to King Crimson, Enya, and Yes as it does to her ancestral heritage. This is not a problem, as intercultural experiments can be engaging and are what keeps music alive and kicking. But the tunes are bogged down by gummy, echo-laden production values that threaten to smother the singer's delicate, jewel-like voice, plus she is repeatedly overwhelmed by an omnipresent overdubbed choir. The overall sound reminds one of a hapless butterfly stuck in a sticky-sweet, claustrophobic honey pot. Which is a terrible pity, as the lady obviously has genuine talent, a strong personal viewpoint and can really sing. She deserves better. --Christina Roden

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

It's good to have the clean-vowelled, fresh-voiced Cambridge Singers back in action with composer John Rutter, who demonstrates once again his considerable talents as a choral director. Here, he also had his work cut out arranging 15 of the tracks (and composing one other). Divided up into various categories, such as "the Eucharist" and "folk hymns," this album will delight the confirmed hymn enthusiast, provided that he or she doesn't insist on the pure, as-written product. Rutter's reworkings range from the bold and brassy (occasionally deliciously over the top--what would Martin Luther have thought of the naughtiness in "A mighty fortress is our God"?) to those of harp-accompanied simplicity, not least in the charming lines of "Be thou my vision." Several tasteful descants are models of their kind. There are some surprises at which to chuckle. For example, not the expected brass and organ job on "We plough the fields and scatter," but a dainty, tripping harp accompaniment to the familiar melody, such as Haydn might have wedded to a Scottish folksong. Occasional numbers might be too saccharine for some tastes, but there are cunningly placed samples of Gregorian chant, Tallis, and Gibbons to provide contrast and cleanse the palate. --Andrew Green

Having listened to this twice... It is difficult to find words for something so Glorious. It doesn't almost hurt, but I almost exploded in heavenly rapture several times.
You will need to get two. It is not music that you will want to keep to yourself.

'The hymns heard on this disc span over 15 centuries of the history of Christian Europe, and have been chosen simply to make up a varied program which can be pleasant to hear.' Some items are accompanied by organ, some by harp where a lighter sound was more appropriate. Some are unaccompanied as in the Gregorian hymns, and five of the grandest hymns are given festival arrangements using brass, timpani, percussion and organ. Although the perspective of this album is Anglican,it must be noted that the Anglican hymn tradition has been notably eclectic. Hymnody is forever changing. 'This album does NOT attempt to reflect the most recent changes-the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses has been well taken care of elsewhere, and time alone will tell whether there is any lasting worth in this most drastic upheaval of worship style.' Therefore, it is timely to reflect upon the immense riches of hymns built up over so many centuries, when they are at great risk of neglect. John Rutter has produced an amazing number of arrangements as well as original songs, and they are all first-rate. Choirs throughout the world (who are skilled enough to sing them)take great pleasure in working with his selections, and audiences, regardless of listening experience seem to enjoy them. They are tuneful, clever and unusual!!!
The Cambridge Singers number : 10 female sopranos,2 male and 4 female altos, 7 tenors and 8 basses. They sing extremely well with clear consonents and well-shaped vowels and plenty of gusto. I miss the boy sopranos that usually sing in the British choirs, but that's only a personal preference, and it surely is not Rutter's preference, because I have never known him to make use of them. A truly inspiring recording, nonetheless.

Another Rutter Keeper!.......2003-02-17

Rutter has won many fans throughout the world for his passionate, creative yet tasteful contributions to church music. Here is a hymn collection with several traditional choices along with Rutter originals.

Several comprise Rutter's remakes, which is most cases are very diginified and not at all distractive to the thrust of the original. The orchestration is superb, and the Cambridge Singers of course provide outstanding choral might.

Well worth consideration to the church music collection.

i was 1st introduced to john rutters music on a radio program... when i 1st heard the arrangement of christ the lord is risen today presented in this cd i pictured a grand celebration of the solemn mass of the resurection of our lord and pictured in particular the grand procession i pictured this being celebrated... this hymn and cd does as best as humanly possible represent the great glory of god and does as its title suggests sing with the heavens and for you fellow traditionalists this is a strongly recomended cd

Pure and rich are these hymns by the Cambridge Singers with their perfect diction that leaves nothing for improvement and their tone quality that envelops the listener. The beauty of the harp, the organ, and the brass adds to the pleasure this CD brings to the listener's ear and heart.

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Sheetal grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where her musician parents had settled after emigrating from the Gujarat in India. By age 5, she had already embarked upon studies of Western violin and Indian classical vocal traditions. Judging by her debut album, the young singer-composer's mature style owes as much to King Crimson, Enya, and Yes as it does to her ancestral heritage. This is not a problem, as intercultural experiments can be engaging and are what keeps music alive and kicking. But the tunes are bogged down by gummy, echo-laden production values that threaten to smother the singer's delicate, jewel-like voice, plus she is repeatedly overwhelmed by an omnipresent overdubbed choir. The overall sound reminds one of a hapless butterfly stuck in a sticky-sweet, claustrophobic honey pot. Which is a terrible pity, as the lady obviously has genuine talent, a strong personal viewpoint and can really sing. She deserves better. --Christina Roden

A slice of pure heaven..........2004-10-24

Sheetal's music is so divinely inspired, I put it on and it made me just want to spin around in endless circles of dance. When you close your eyes, spontaneous visions come alive with flavor after flavor of the young musician's creativity. I knew Sheetal since she was a child, but I had no idea we had such a gem hiding here in Detroit... do get a copy of this album.. I got a few, so I have her music wherever I go. Sheetal's sweet voice will float in your head, long after the CD finishes.

I bought this CD on a whim; I thought its "Raga meets Enya" style might be appealing. And, gosh, was I right! Please ignore Amazon.com's over the top negative review of this album. I reacted similarly to the disk the first time I heard it. But this is one that really rewards repeated listening. Those familiar with filmi music might find that Sheetal's music bears some resemblance to that of A.R. Rahman.

You Can Be Transported to India and Beyond!.......2004-08-09

I stumbled across this cd merely by accident, and I am so glad I listened to this cd then promptly bought it...!
Sheetal transports you to other exotic lands with her melodious and erethral voice. You feel like you are walking through the markets and streets of Bombay...I especially love the songs, "Hari Om", "Ganesh" and "Love of Ages".

I wish I could give this 10 stars 'cause it is beautiful!
I love world music especially anything from India or the Middle East...and if you like music that takes you away from the everyday bubble gum pop on the radio, then this is your best bet. There are some english songs too, but most are in Indian. Feel Taken Away with Sheetal!!!

This is a beautiful album with incredible vocal work. The music is produced by Garnder Cole, a noted producer, and has ambient, atmospheric textures, traditional Indian instruments along with Sheetal's multi-layered harmonies. If you enjoy world music and chanting you will enjoy love this album. There are also some English songs with haunting melodies.

This is a very fine recital drawn from the core of the church and cathedral choir repertoire. Martin Neary proves here (perhaps more convincingly than anyone else) that a good hymn can be just as magical as a through-composed anthem for choir alone, and that the repetition of a single tune over verse after verse need not be a dull experience.

The hymns and tunes selected are indeed among the best-loved works in English church music. "O God, our help in ages past," "Love Divine," "Eternal Father, strong to save," "Be thou my vision," "Guide me, O thou great Redeemer" and the eventide chestnuts "Abide with me" and "The day thou gavest" are all bound to be the most recognisable even to those who are not regular churchgoers. Some of the Victorian composers have immortalised the cream of their talent in such hymns as "The King of Love my shepherd is" and "O thou, who camest from above." Purcell's tune "Westminster Abbey" - extracted from his anthem "O God, thou art my God" and set to the words "Christ is made the sure foundation" - shows how a stroke of inspiration of long ago can survive endless musical change by being adapted and absorbed into hymnody. Another adapted work is Hubert Parry's hymn "O Praise ye the Lord," actually the final part of an extended anthem ("Hear my words, ye people") and is presented on this disc in its original form, making for an interesting and refreshing change to the repetitive verses of the rest of the collection. Completing the programme are settings that fall more definitely outside of the realms of congregational singing: the powerful "Kontakion of the Dead" to an ancient tune and harmonisation from Kiev; the moving Air from County Derry set to the verse "I would be true" for unaccompanied boys voices (as sung by these very choristers at the Funeral of Princess Diana in 1997); Martin Neary's little tune "Studland" written for the blessing "May the Grace of Christ our Saviour;" his lovely arrangement of Sebastian Temple's "Make me a channel of your peace" (also sung at the Diana funeral) is here as well. Each item is a gem in its own right.

In this performance, each gem is polished to a high standard. Contrast is effectively made by the use of subtly different forces for different verses - there is an appropriate use of boisterous tenors and basses in "O worship the King" at the verse "O tell of his might," and a plethora of soul-stirring unaccompanied verses, particularly in "Praise to the Holiest in the Height." (I would challenge anybody to find a more moving moment in hymnody, achieved with such utter simplicity, than the performance of "And in the garden secretly, and on the Cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die" as it is on this disc.) This is not to say that Martin Baker's accompaniments are not another wonderful element in the performance: for instance, his clever doubling of the tune at a low octave in "Who would true valour see" for the words "No lion can him fright; he'll with a giant fight." On the subject of words, every single one is treated with care and attention to its meaning, individually and in context - the ensemble is finely honed and the enunciation is immaculate. Martin Neary draws every ounce of poetical significance from the words in these hymns, making real sense of them and allow them to speak as music, not simply as long lines of verse to get through as quickly as possible (which is often the problem arising with hymn singing in many churches today). As a finishing touch, several hymns have descants and alternative harmonisations, many of them supplied by Neary, who knows how to make them effective, stunning and highly original. An ensemble of trumpets and drums joins the Abbey Choir and organ for the performance of "All people that on earth do dwell" in the festive arrangement by Vaughan Williams - this is as stirring as many of the other hymns are moving.
