About the Artist
Taikoza

Taikoza is a Japanese Taiko drum percussion group that uses the powerful rhythms of the Taiko drums to create an electrifying energy that carries audiences in a new dimension of excitement.

The Taiko is a large, barrel-like drum that can fill the air with the sounds of rolling thunder. Drawing from Japan's rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of instruments. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza incorporates also the shakuhachi, the fue (both bamboo flutes) and the Koto (a 13 string instrument) to create a new dimension and a powerful impact on the audience. Taikoza uses drum that are 3 feet in diameter and weigh up to 170lbs. The largest is a 6 foot drum that is 4 1/2 in diameter.

Taikoza was formed in 1995 by Marco Lienhard in New York City in collaboration with other professional Taiko players. Their love for the Taiko art form transcends national boundaries, bringing new energy to this ancestral form. Taikoza has performed in Europe, Asia and have extensively toured North America (including Canada and Mexico).

Several of the members have been members of Ondekoza for many years. The members of Taikoza have collaborated with Kodo, San Jose Taiko, SF Taiko Dojo, Oedo Sukeroku Taiko, Kenny Endo Ensemble, Sawai Ensemble, Southern All Stars, Anthony Brown, James Newton, Mayuzumi Toshiro, New York City Opera and many more. Outside of the US, they have toured in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, England, Japan, Canada and Mexico. Taikoza participated in the Cherry Blossom Festival( regular performers also for other events at BBG) at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Washington, D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival, the Beale Street Festival in Memphis and numerous Asian Festivals in colleges and communities on the East Coast.

They also perform regularly for corporate events (Merrill Lynch, Gillette, Ameritech, City of Los Angeles, PriceWaterhouse Coopers). They have presented workshops and presentations for schools in the New York area for Young Audiences, Arts Connection, Lincoln Center Institute and Symphony Space.

Members of Taikoza also regularly give workshops to the taiko community in America, Europe and in Japan (the annual Kosa International Percussion workshops in August, N. America Taiko Conference 1999 and 2001, Sonoma Taiko Camp, Shoji Tabuchi Show in Branson, MO, Circle Ensemble Taiko workshop in Leiden, NL and many others).

Concerts in New York, the East Coast, California, Japan and Mexico are scheduled for 2002.

Amazon.com essential recording

For once, a record label actually gives us more bang for the buck, combining two indisputable classics--1969's self-titled debut and the 1970 follow-up Idlewild South--onto one glorious CD. Five urgent notes kick off Spencer Davis's "Don't Want You No More," and by the time that searing instrumental morphs into Gregg Allman's superb slow blues "It's Not My Cross to Bear," it's clear these Georgians mean business. Everyone talks of the Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon covers, the furious twin leads of Duane and Dickey Betts, Gregg's soulful voice and formidable organ, the percussion attack of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, but what about the songwriting skills? Just start with "Cross to Bear," "Whipping Post," "Dreams," "Revival," "Elizabeth Reed"--are you kidding? These two records blend gritty blues, Southern soul, and psychedelic rock into an exciting creation, and they serve notice: the Allmans will contend for the title of best American rock & roll band. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars First record I ever bought.......2007-06-09

This was the first record I ever bought in a store, along w/ CSNY's 4 Way Street. Still a classic. The first ever appearance of Gregg's voice at the top of Ain't My Cross to Bear sounds like a caged bear has been let into the studio. How did he sound so gnarly so young? and the songwriting -- Wow! They fit right in w/ the classic covers of Muddy et al. Everyone raves about Live at the Fillmore, but for me, this is "where it all begins".

5 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. THEIR FIRST TWO ALBUMS........2007-05-16

The Allman Brothers Band Beginnings includes the original band's first two albums, the self-titled The Allman Brothers Band (1969) and Idlewild South (1970). As any true Peach Head will tell you, this is absolutely essential. Their first album is arguably the best debut album ever in rock history, and their second album is just as good. It all starts with their jazzy instrumental cover of Spencer Davis' Don't Want You No More, which blends into the slow blues, It's Not My Cross To Bear. With two Gibson Les Paul guitars, a Fender bass guitar, a Hammond B-3 organ, two drummers, and Gregg Allman's soulful, bluesy growl, the band grabs your attention immediately. This and Black Hearted Woman, are very, very good, but it's not untill they cover Muddy Waters' Trouble No More, that we hear true greatness from Duane Allman, with his monumental slide guitar performance. Every Hungry Woman and Dreams feature Duane's slide guitar, also, and are followed by the ABB's blues-rock anthem, the powerful Whipping Post.
The jazz-rock instrumental, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and the acoustic guitar based, world-weary Midnight Rider, both classics, are highlights on the second half of Beginnings, but there is much, much more than that here. This album has no filler, every single song is a classic. The pleading Don't Keep Me Wonderin' and the funky Leave My Blues At Home are also excellant, as is the sad ballad Please Call Home. They also cover Muddy Waters again when bassist Berry Oakley sings (I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man. The original Allman Brothers Band released these two albums, and the live At Fillmore East, before Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident. Four months later they released Eat A Peach, which included material recorded before the accident with Duane, and new material without Duane. Then Berry Oakley was killed (also on a motorcycle), taking away another key member of this band. The Allman Brothers Band is still strong today, but this "Duane Era" of the band casts a long shadow of greatness over the band, and they don't try to escape it. Instead they celebrate this epic phase of their history, and their fans do, also. Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe. Beginnings, At Fillmore East, and Eat A Peach is their legacy, and each one is a legendary classic.

5 out of 5 stars Back Where It All Began.......2007-03-21

Midnight Rider. Dreams. Elizabeth Reed. Whipping Post. These are the songs that made the legend known as the Allman Brothers Band. This is the original six-man band. Duane and Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe. The first half of the CD is the original "Allman Brothers Band" album. The songs are mostly Gregg Allman originals. Gregg demonstrates great songwriting right out of the box here. It's amazing when one considers the guy who wrote "Whipping Post" and "Dreams" was only in his very early 20s. How does someone that young get so world-weary?

The second half of the CD is the original "Idlewild South" album. Guitarist Dickey Betts comes into his own as a composer with "Revival" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," the first of a career of fantastic instrumentals. "Midnight Rider" is probably Gregg Allman's best-known song. The guitar interplay between Duane Allman and Dickey Betts is breathtaking. Berry Oakley does a vocal turn on a radically-reworked, very spooky version of the Muddy Waters classic "Hootchie Coochie Man." "Please Call Home" - does slow blues get any better than this? The wild card on this whole cd is "Leave My Blues at Home." A previous reviewer said something to the effect that James Brown would be proud of this song, and I couldn't agree more.

This CD has all the elements that would make up the Allman Brothers "sound" - the twin lead guitars, two drummers who complement each other, a thunderous bass player who plays like a third lead guitarist, excellent songwriting, and Gregg Allman proving he is one of the finest blues singers alive, if not of all time. An essential CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Poor Re-Mixing.......2006-07-22

Great Band at the top of their game.

Great Set, one of the better live sets of the Allman Brothers Band.

But I have a bone to pick with the producers of the CD. The opening two cuts, I Don't Want You No More and Its Not My Cross to Bear are one song. The Brothers blended them into each other in a seamless wonder that was inspirational. What did the producers do? They chopped up these two songs. I had to buy the original album and record them on the computer to preserve the artists original recording. This was irritating and shows that the producers were more interested in conformity than artistic intent. Grrrrrrr.

End of rant.

5 out of 5 stars Good pick!.......2006-06-21

For whatever reason, Idlewild South is a rare album these days. Thankfully, Beginnings is here to fix that. You get both their debut (probably the best first album ever) and Idlewild south. Well, why should you buy this over the originals?
1. It's two LP's for the price of one-and-a-half, which means you can buy this package for $20, or you can pick up both albums individually for $26.
2. It's both albums one CD. That alone is a pretty good reason.
3. It's simply great music. On this album, you get It's Not My Cross to Bear, Trouble No More, Dreams, Whipping Post, Revival, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Midnight Rider and Hoochie Coochie Man. That alone should be reason enough.
If you haven't bought this album yet, what are you waiting for?

Product Description

Children have a natural ability to learn multiple languages easily. Studies show that from birth to age 12, a child's brain is open to assimilate and retain other languages. With repeat exposure to another language, your child's mental develpment will be enriched and carry over into all aspects of learning. This entire CD has been sung only in Spanish to immerse the child fully in the language. This method has been proven to be the most effective way to teach secondary languages. Nursery rhyme songs are a perfect way to introduce or continue developing another language in a familiar setting. Children will recognize the tunes and be able to make a connection with what they are singing. The tempo of these songs has been slowed down slightly so that the words are easy for children to hear and articulate themselves, in order to sing along. Written lyrics have also been included. Childhood development is extremely important! Adding additional languages in a fun, musical environment will only increases a child's capacity for knowledge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Distinct enunciation makes each word understandable.......2007-05-25

The absence of a lot of instruments makes the words on this CD very EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I already knew the English words to the songs ("Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," etc.) Because the singer pronounced each word very clearly, I quickly learned Spanish vocabulary while driving in my car.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining & educational for the little ones..........2007-03-13

The simplicity of the accompaniment and the familiarity of the songs to the English speaker facilitates understanding of the Spanish lyrics. The artist has a nice voice and the words are individually enunciated making it easy to sing along. My children enjoy this CD and it is fun to see them picking up another language through music!!

3 out of 5 stars Very So-so.......2007-01-22

I really wanted and fully expected to love this CD. Unfortunately it sounds like it was recorded in someone's living room using a Casio for musical accompaniment. The woman has a nice singing voice and I appreciate that the songs have been slightly slowed to allow non-Spanish speakers more time to process the Spanish sounds, however overall I think of this as an amateur product.

5 out of 5 stars We love this CD!.......2006-12-23

We are English speaking parents of a 10 month old but we want our little one to learn Spanish. We play this CD for her all the time and we all love it. We also have the same songs in English and have played that one for her since birth, so all the sounds are familar to her. The songs are well sung and the tunes are all familar to any American English speaker. This is a great way to start introducing the little one to Spanish in a fun way!

5 out of 5 stars FORMIDABLE!.......2006-02-09

As a mother trying to teach my 3 year-old son Spanish, I enjoy this CD greatly, the songs are already familiar to the kids, and their learning capacity, even on a foreign language, is trully impressive, but most of all, my son loves it!

3 out of 5 stars Not good........2007-03-04

The swear words aren't the bad part. Its the music and especially the vocals. Blink 182 was a new punk band though. They just had no experience. Well, look at 'em now! Awesome! Why did they have to break up? I reccommend any Green Day, Weezer, BoDeans, and any other blink except maybe ":cheshire cat" and "Flyswatter"

2 out of 5 stars Their early stuff. Not that good........2006-12-29

Blink 182 is by all means a great band, but their early work such as Buddha, isn't that great. It seems more like random themed songs without any passion than the hard rocking tunes they have made in albums like Enema of the State.

4 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-12-18

Before I get into the review, I've got something to say. To the second guy below me: This was made before cheshire cat and after flyswatter. Flyswatter and Buddha are two completely different things. Flyswatter had 8 songs, and was recorded on a tape deck. Then there were other demos and promos made between the two that not too many people can explain.

Now, to the review:

Is it the sex pistols? no. ramones? no. dead kennedys? no. But is it punk: Yes. Ever heard of the descendents? They rocked, and were possibly one of the most influential punk bands ever. If I had to compare this album to someone, it would be the descendents. While this album may, at some points, seem to venture into pop-punk, it's some of the best pop-punk yet.

Sure, the recording quality sucks, but that just adds to the awesome feel of this album. The band occassionaly messes up vocally and instrumentally, which makes the album feel very natural. Plus, blink had their own identity at this point, so they weren't exactly like every punk band out there. The songs move along at an awesome pace, with very little space between each track.

However, the album could have been a bit more agressive. It seemed like their singing was kinda held back at some points. Some songs could've gone faster, too. But, all in all, it's a good punk album.

all their doing is talking and yelling to horrible music. I can't beleive my son likes this!Plus it curses!!!

This CD finds the LA-born, smooth-jazz star Gerald Albright on a new label, with a new line of saxophones and a new home in Colorado. It's co-produced by some of his heavyweight contemporaries, including Jeff Lorber, Chuckii Booker, and Rex Rideout, and it features Albright's traveling band. All of the 12 tracks showcase Albright's assertive mix of Cannonball Adderley's bravura and Maceo Parker's funkiness--whether he's playing alto, baritone, tenor sax, or flute. His high school friend, Patrice Rushen, who let Albright steal the show with his burning solo on her 1982 single "Forget Me Nots," turns in a nice piano spotlight on the title track. The old Whispers hit "And the Beat Goes On" is reprised with that group's lead vocalists, and trumpeter Chris Botti's Milesiian trumpet leaves its footprint on "Big Shoes." Albright's rousing rendition of "Georgia on My Mind," shows why everybody, from Quincy Jones to Phil Collins, loves his sound. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great feel-good album ! The master is back !.......2007-03-10

Veteran smooth jazz saxophone master Gerald Albright is no one-dimensional purveyor of musical wallpaper.
He has recorded seven successful solo albums for Atlantic when he wasn't busy, assisting an impressive, and mammoth, roster of popular R&B artists. Some of the more well-known artists Albright assisted during his career include Anita Baker, Quincy Jones, the Temptations, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, and many, many more.
His excellent "NEW BEGINNINGS" collection is wide-ranging enough to cover a sultry version of "Georgia on My Mind" and a swaying, uptempo cover of the Whispers' disco-era hit "And the Beat Goes On", a compelling 80's style groove which features the Scott brothers (Whispers) on backing vocals.
The pianist Patrice Rushen makes a guest appearance on the album's title track, and Albright's colleague Jeff Lorber performs on cuts including the velvety "We Got the Groove" and the sinuous "Take Your Time".
Other guest artists are Chris Botti on trumpet,Paul Jaxkson jr. on guitar,Rex Rideout and Chuckii Booker as arrangers.
The uptempo cut "Big Shoes" is a flowing number.
Listen also to the slower "Last But Not Least".
Albright is quite capable of providing a five-star masterpiece, which "New Beginnings" is not. Nonetheless, this 2006 release with Peak Records has more pluses than minuses -- and it is certainly superior to "Dream Come True", "Bermuda Nights", and some of the other duds he recorded for Atlantic in the '80s and '90s.
This is a very strong selection of Smooth Jazz grooves that mixes in Funk and Fusion.
As usual, Gerald's playing is soulful, smooth and fluid. And very enjoyable.
You will love this feel-good album.
Enjoy !

4 out of 5 stars Lovely beginning .......2006-11-12

As the CD title would suggest that smooth jazz stalwart Gerald Albright has indeed moved to a new lable, moreover, it would appear that this move has not damppened his enthauism, as this particular CD moves from strength to strength. Although some would argue that the vocals detract from the instrumentals, which would appear to be a rather persistent argument amongst listeners of jazz; however, I suspect that Mr. Albright and his producers have in this project found the balance between the two such that the entire collection is appealing and worthy of anyone's smooth jazz collection.

4 out of 5 stars sweet!.......2006-11-01

this is a really nice album. my favorite are "i want somebody" and "you are my love". definitely add this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars SICK SICK SICK.......2006-07-07

This album is one that just has your head boppin' or you jumping up and down in your seat. This is a must play for the car. The hooks are simple and memorable from beginning to end. I especially love the "Georgia on my mind." Just adding another to my Albright collection.

5 out of 5 stars New Beginnings Indeed.......2006-05-07

Gerald Albright hits the mark on this new CD. He is at the top of his game and you can feel the love that he put into this project. A new label and a new home for the Albright family must be perfect because this CD is going to be one of the hottest he has ever put out. Do yourself a favor. This is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-07-27

I randomly picked this cd up a couple days back based on an amazon recommendation, and what a good one it was! I find it to be sort of like Live, though a bit harder on the guitar. A smooth album with good flow between all the tracks. A shame they only have one album, though definitely quality rock.

5 out of 5 stars Here's where Memento went:.......2007-07-14

Memento have changed their name to Nine Times Bodyweight. You can hear new songs at www.myspace.com/ninetimesbodyweight. This cd is amazing, ranging from the heavy rock of Nothing Sacred, Abyss, and Coming, to the softer progressive Beginnings and Blister. A Great hard rock cd.

5 out of 5 stars Where are they?.......2006-11-25

All I can say is "who are these guys" and where have they gone? The cd came out in 2003, and I don't see any other efforts from them? I bought this cd on a whim, and I must say I can't stop listening to it! Please don't tell me that they broke up. How can a band this talented only put out 1 cd? Like Future leaders of the world, put out 1 great cd and break up? This is an awesome cd, and I highly recommend it! Very high quality music. Please Memento....put out another cd!

4 out of 5 stars pretty decent.......2006-03-03

I think this cd is pretty good. If you think it is going to all be like "Nothing Sacred" it is not. Most of it is much better. It is a very emotional and unique sounding cd.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Album.......2006-02-13

First of all i would like to say this is possibly the greatest rock album that i own. This album might not appeal to most people because not every song sounds the same... they are actually almost all different almost entirely. After hearing "nothing sacred" i figured that this band would be just like every other "rock" band out there untill i listened to the whole cd. You can not judge cd on it's first listen either. I actually listened to it once and then tossed it on the back seat of my car as i have done with most of my favorite bands. If you are going to listen to any song at all then listen to "figure 8" While it may be a 13 minute song and most people who enjoy todays "pop rock" don't even have the attention span to pay attention to anything for 13 minutes it is possibly one of the greatest songs i have ever heard. If you can not find the genius in this song then your favorite bands are probably staind, korn or chevelle (ok so i couldn't mock tensionexperiment's review with nonpoint seeing as how they are my second favorite band but i'm sure he doesn't understad their music either) If you like something new and different and you didn't think that nothing sacred was a "bad@$$ hard rock song" then take a closer look at this album, you'll be suprised

The best thing about this Shania Twain album is the photo on the front of the CD case. She sings very well as usual, but the production is poor and the songs are mediocre. For a terrific Shania Twain album try "Shania Twain's Greatest Hits."

    5 out of 5 stars Not Bad!.......2006-11-02

This is very different from Shania's other music. But I think its good none the less. Not usually up my alley but this one is pretty good. I love Shania's music so of course I wanted this one. This was actually a gift to me. Good album over all. I'm 16 btw and I still enjoy this album! However I reccomend listening to this album first before buying it.

    2 out of 5 stars Beginnings.......2006-07-18

This was truly the beginnings for Shania. Most of it sounds like just about any other ordinary singer...before she developed her unique style. The voice is still beautiful, but without any of her true depth & feeling.

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore Shania fans only.......2006-05-08

I only recommend this cd for hardcore Shania fans as it's a 80's rock album. I think its a great album but not Shania's best. Again hardcore Shania fans only (like me)

Finally this incomparable Morgana King MASTEPIECE "New Beginnings..." is out on CD for all of us "Great Singer" fans to savor and enjoy...this amazing masterwork is really fine and a true magical musical treat.
Masterfully arranged by Bob James and Torrie Zito (Mr. Zito was the one who brilliantly arranged the classic "A Taste Of Honey" for Morgana), this is a tremendous vocal collection that is as good as it gets...Stevie Wonder exclaimed "Morgana King has done the best version of "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" I have heard" and reviews from Rolling Stone to the New York Times were ecstatic with praise for Morgana and this stunning work! Timeless and contemporary is this wondrous musical journey and this would have been huge with promotion but memories of a record company with cash flow problems kept this from happening as it is clear that quality and creativity were not the issue...too bad the Grammy Foundation don't take things like this into consideration as these amazingly soulful and uniquely classic vocals are clearly "Grammy Award" worthy!!! Bravo Morgana King!!!!!
Now if only smart producer would release the other Morgana King masterwork "I Know How It Feels To Be Lonely" from 1968 which has incredible versions of everything from The Beatles and Donavan to other classic contemporaries, then all will be wonderful and fine in the world of blissful and magical vocal music!~

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection; Beautiful Piano.......2005-09-09

BEGINNINGS by Fernando Ortega is a 2 cd set featuring selections of some of the "early" recordings of this great pianist primarily drawn from four albums: Meditations of the Heart, Meditations of the Heart Encore, Hymns and Meditations, and Night of Your Return. While many of these cds are available for purchase online, it is nearly impossible to find them in your typical Christian music store.

Of the thirty-four songs on the album, seventeen are instrumental.

Songs from Meditations of the Heart include: Sacrifice of Praise, Living Water, Morning Star, Family, I Love To Praise Your Name, and As For Us. (Six of the ten songs on the album)

Songs from Meditations of the Heart Encore include: I Remember Well, It's Your Love, Tossed On The Wind, Teach Me Thy Way, and Creation Sings. (Five of the eleven songs on the album).

Hymns and Meditations: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Near The Cross, Softly and Tenderly, Nothing But The Blood, and I Need Thee Every Hour/Just As I Am/ Come Ye Sinners Medley, What Wondrous Love Is This, Con Que Pagaremos, Brethren We Have Met To Worship, Sacred Head Now Wounded, and Nearer My God To Thee. (Which appears to be the entire album of Hymns and Meditations)

It also seems to include all the songs on Night Of Your Return as well. (My Song Is Love Unknown, Praise To The Lord, The Almighty, Night Of Your Return, Mi Abuelito, Chimayo, Jesus, Lover of My Soul, Here Is Love, Road Song, Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted, This is My Father's World, and Green Pastures.)

With two complete albums and two partial albums, BEGINNINGS is well worth the price and is a great addition for any Fernando Ortega fan's collection.

This piano music is wonderful. His style simple but beautiful.

    Album Description

Mention nymphs, dwarves, dragons, witches, and magic spells to rock fans and they immediately smirk and conjure an image of the satirical band Spinal Tap- or something equally or far more geeky and unhip. What if we told you that French prog metal band Anthropia has written an epic composition that is inhabited by blacksmith dwarves, mocking sprites, mercenary barbarians, a talking horse, a cunning succubus, and seaweed-intolerant dragons (among other creatures) in a cross-dimensional fictional plotline? Still chuckling? Well, stop, because the mastermind of Anthropia, Hugues Lefebvre (nickname Hugo), is reviving the rock fantasy genre and ups the ante with the explosive, multi-layered first installment of a planned trilogy -- The Ereyn Chronicles: Part I: The Journey of Beginnings, based on the writings of Quentin Borderie. "I was not a huge fan of fantasy, but I was so truly captivated by Quentin's story that I wrote music around it," Hugo says. Hugo realized that the only way to capture the many nuances of the story was to write and record three separate records to coincide with the exciting episodes that sprang from Borderie's fertile mind. "With an in-depth story like this, we felt the best way to present the main events of the story was to separate them into three major parts," Hugo says. "Basically, each song represents a chapter of Quentin's novel." The CD you are listening to Part I: The Journey of Beginnings, which buzzes with flashes of Iron Maiden's gritty conceptual metal, Dave Mustaine/Megadeth lightning-speed riffing, Dream Theater's sweeping storytelling, Yngwie Malmsteen's neo-classical minor-scale mining, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway-era Genesis atmospherics, Kansas' busy symphonic boogie-rock, classical guitar beauty and flair, and Rush's dark `70s sci-fi/fantasy explorations.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too many mythical creatures, not enough bite.......2006-09-30

When I was in junior high school, my friends goaded me into reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. While I was impressed with Tolkien's descriptions and character development, I had a really hard time getting into the story. The suspension of disbelief required for such reading doesn't come naturally to me, and my mind raced through questions about some of the more fantastical aspects of the book.

In a small way, the debut album from Anthropia hits me the same way. It depicts a fantasy world filled with nymphs, dwarves, dragons, witches and magic spells. It's all a bit difficult to keep track of and frankly, I have enough trouble figuring out the world I'm a part of without having to deal with an alternate sphere.

In the real world, Anthropia is a band name for French multi-instrumentalist Hugo Lefebvre, who plays all the sounds on the album save for the drums of Damien Rainaud and a few minor guest performances. The Ereyn Chronicles is based on the stories of Quentin Borderie, who has influenced countless European metal bands and singer songwriter Aimee Mann. The Journey Begins is the first of a trilogy of releases Lefebvre is planning for his interpretations of Borderie's work. Musically, the album is an odd mix of Iron Maiden like metal, mixed with some symphonic boogie and Peter Gabriel era Genesis for atmospherics. Surprisingly, this concoction works fairly well together. Lefebvre takes full advantage of his tremendous gift at classical guitar and adds some thunderous electric and bass guitar overlays to give the production theatrical intensity. Lefebvre successfully portrays the drama and conflicts that bedevil Borderie's constructs and easily shifts moods to bring out the dimensionality of the characters and the twisting of the plot.

If you're into fantasy and metal, you'll love this album. Even though Lefebvre reaches into a grab bag of seventies and eighties music for his composition, he is true to the forms and sometimes surpasses the expectations a listener might have for a record so steeped in musical as well as mythic lore. In its own way, The Ereyn Chronicles is a bit anachronistic, but considering the material that inspired it, the incongruous aspects makes it even cooler.

But it must be noted that this really is a specialty item for fantasy fans. If you're like me and have a problem with suspending disbelief, you might like the music but the storyline will leave you behind. For those of us who aren't about to rock with The Ereyn Chronicles, I'd suggest investing in the CD/DVD of This Is Spinal Tap, and at least get a laugh out of the fantasy driven lyrics that almost made them famous.
