Editorial Reviews

James D. Armstrong Jr., Jazz Now, Vol. 9 No. 10, March 2000.
The Other Side is a most distinctive and thoughtfully designed session and is arguably the only recording in existence which successfully juxtaposes modern improvisational influences with an awareness of the dramatic and poetic elements of Argentine tango and folklore. The leader's beautiful, commanding voice is featured throughout, with contrasting, modern arrangements by the gifted Uruguayan pianist Nando Michelin. The results are fresh, the antithesis of the hackneyed Latin Jazz blowing session.

"Como Pajaros en el Aire (Like Birds in Flight)," an original composition by Peteco Carabajal, easily serves as a theme for the session. As in the vocal music of Enrique Granados, the great Spanish composer, the powerful, poetic lyric is of central importance and is exploited for maximum emotional effect. Carabajal's verse is sentimental, and in translation loosely reads, "The hands of my mother are like birds in flight; the hands of my mother represent an open sky."

Product Description
The Other Side / El Otro Lado is a fusion of Argentina's traditional music, both tango and folklore, with jazz overtones--along the lines of what the great Astor Piazzolla used to do. This project was born in 1997 out of the artistic encounter in Boston, MA, of Argentine vocalist Katie Viqueira with Uruguayan composer Nando Michelin. The CD features songs by great Argentine composers (Astor Piazzolla, Eladia Blazquez, Mariano Mores, Peteco Carabajal and others) with highly creative arrangements and a superb vocal interpretation. Please, see the attached reviews for further insights.

5 out of 5 stars It renders Argentine folklore a new touch of freshness.......1999-09-07

There's a careful choice of songs made explicit in the strength this album carries, masterly arranged and played. Katie's voice sings full of life, rendering the Argentine folklore a charming touch of freshness not frequently found. Katie, thanks for inviting the younger generations to trace their roots in this new light!

5 out of 5 stars La voz de Buenos Aires en Cambridge.......1999-08-26

El disco de Katie es un verdadero tributo a la musica argentina. La fusion del jazz con folklore argentino es impresionante, las canciones cobran nueva vigencia bajo la voz de Katie y los arreglos de Nando Michelin.
