Positively Beadhead

There's no doubting the zydeco star's crossover intentions here. Terrance Simien offers added percussion, the drums mixed up radio-ready, understated vocals backed by chorales, and songs and arrangements that are less zydeco than pop-with-accordion ("This Old Road"), folkie remakes ("5000 Miles"), and references to dead rock stars and 12-step programs ("Grandma's House"). Most of the time, this kitchen-sink approach sounds gimmicky, cluttered, and out of whack. But when it gels--the rocking "All Her Lovin'" and "Mardi Gras in the Country," a mournful yet decidedly untraditional "Jole Blon," an impossibly chipper and catchy revival of Wet Willie's "Keep on Smilin'"--it's just as obvious that Simien and his fans (the Beadheads of the CD title) are definitely on to something. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars The best yet from the boys from Mallet, Louisiana.......2000-09-20

Terrance Simien and the Mallet Playboys' best CD yet -- this has to be the perfection of their sound. I'm eagerly waiting for their next album. I saw them in concert a year ago at The King Biscuit Festival along the shores of the mighty Mississippi. The attention to detail and perfection that Terrance shows to his famous sound is only exceeded by his stage performance and interaction with his audience, many of whom are fans who travel from show to show with the group. There is some contention that "All Her Lovin'" isn't Zydeco, but is pop music instead. Music has to grow, and if this isn't the soul of the man, accept it for a joyful expression of love. The rest of the CD is outstanding, even if you don't understand Cajun French (as I do). There's a cheat sheet with the CD that translates for all you Anglophiles out there. This is the very best of the best, but will most like be second best after the next CD is made. A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars The best yet for Terrance and the boys! A must have!.......1999-10-10

I also have had the pleasure of seeing this band live many, many times and can not get enough! The electicity that Terrance puts out during a show cannot compare, but this album comes pretty close! Zydeco at it's finest! This CD has it all, Zydeco, Blues, and R&B. How can you not love it! ALWAYS A BEADHEAD! PEACE, LOVE, and ZYDECO!

5 out of 5 stars By far the most innovative in his genre.......1999-07-27

This guy embodies all that is positive about music. This record is his best yet. He sounds like a contemporary Sam Cooke. He has an obvious love of his job and a spirituality that comes through loud and clear. The passion in his voice is like nothing I've ever heard before and what he delivers to his audience is very powerful, both live and on disc. I've see him dozens and dozens of times. Every Beadhead out there needs to get the word out. Peace, love and ZYDECO! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal recording.......1999-06-28

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Simien perform most of the songs on this CD at the House of Blues in Boston. The recordings are true to his live performance. All are exceptional. As a Zydeco collector, I rate this album as one of the very best I have ever heard. He will win a Grammy!
