5 out of 5 stars influential.......2007-06-21

A great album that influenced many bands. I can think of a few bands that covered songs from this album... Opeth, Mayhem, Marduk... like any of those bands or hate them, I just thought it would be cool to point out how influential this album really is.

5 out of 5 stars This is where it all started..........2006-11-27

Everyone from Napalm Death to Darkthrone to Goatwhore nabbed riffs from this masterpiece, and as a result we're all better off. Despite Tom G's bizzare (if charming and aggressive) vocals, this album remains as timeless and punishing as the day it was first pressed to vinyl as a 6-song MLP. The more time I spend talking about this album, the less time is spent listening to it, so I'm going to end this now and turn on Morbid Tales!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2006-09-14

Do you ou really need a review of this?
Shame on anyone who doesn't have this already!

5 out of 5 stars Top Ten deserted on an island metal album.......2006-08-25

I remember this vinyl vividly popping, rumbling, loud through the speakers to 'Human (Intro)' to 'Into the Crypts of Rays'.
Holy crap....
My friend and I bought every metal album we thought looked good back in '84.
The big 4? Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax...
This was #5 for me.
Celtic Frost.
Most songs to love, some to hate.
As it is with any Frost record.
The noise 'songs' like Danse Macabre suck, push skip.
Dethroned Emperor, beautiful.
Just like the rest of this album.
It's raw, real, classic and just damn good.
5 stars because it's a personal Top 10 Album.
If you like metal...
Buy it, worship it.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely influential extreme metal classic.......2006-06-29

In 1984 while much of the world was headbanging to the likes of Ride the Lightning, Powerslave, and even stuff like Quiet Riot there were a smaller group of people getting into the much more evil Celtic Frost. This along with the CF precursor band Hellhammer, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory were laying down the foundation for black metal and the other extreme metal styles that were still coming into being. In 1984 all three of these bands made influential and groundbreaking releases. What really sets this one in particular apart was CF's ultimate guitar tone from Hell, their doomy/sludgy/thrashy riffs were unlike any other. Tom G Warrior's (isn't such a cool stage name?) voice was also quite unique, his deeper more guttural voice coupled with his heavy accent adds an evil touch to the songs that no one else really had at the time. Quorthon and King Diamond had much higher pitched vocals yet still unrelentingly evil as well.

As for the actual songs, they're filled with occult themes and those proto-doom/thrash/black metal riffs. If speed's what you're looking for check out the opener "Into the Crypts of Rays", the title track, and Nocturnal Fear leave you headbanging into rigor mortis. If you're looking for doom and gloom we have that too! Listen to Visions of Mortality and Procreation of the Wicked. There's even more midpaced songs like Return of the Eve and Dethroned Emperor to satisfy all your cravings. WAIT A SEC! This album also contains perhaps the creepiest soundscape ever in Danse Macabre, I'm not even going to bother describing it you just have to hear it to believe it, words couldn't do justice. Yes it's true these three guys might not be the most talented "technically proficient" (that phrase is overused) guys in the biz but they still managed to churn out a f*cking classic. This is just another reason technicality is sometimes overrated if you ask me. I know this is a big hit with the older group of metal fans and with damn good reason too, and with people like me spreading the good word it should be liked and appreciated by my generation as well.

If you like this and are interested in more of the roots of extreme metal pick up basically all the stuff that's listed in the "customers who bought this cd also bought..." section up above. I leave you asking this very important question-

Using such traditional Irish instruments as uilleann pipes, the low whistle, the concertina, and the violin, as well as some of the purest, sweetest voices to be heard on a children's recording in recent memory, Seal Maiden: A Celtic Musical relates a mystical tale. Despite her mother's warnings, a playful seal pup frolics too close to the shore, magically molts her sealskin, and turns into a human. The Seal Maiden's humanness leaves her heartsick and discontented; she misses her mother and can't shrug off an atavistic affinity for biting off eels' heads and devouring them whole, as well as other strictly-for-the-seals behavior. Eventually, though, she marries and has a son. When he discovers his own hidden sealskin, he becomes her gateway back to the sea and the slippery, song-filled life she left behind. If this Emerald Isle legend sounds familiar, that's probably because it was recently given silver-screen treatment in John Sayles's The Secret of Roan Inish. Narrator and lead singer Karan Casey (of the traditional Irish group Solas) is enchanting, especially on "The Song of the Seal" and "Seoithin." Musicians Martin Hayes (violin) and Dennis Cahill (guitar) display near-magical heart-melting powers on "Port Na bPucal," which captures the Celtic spirit beautifully. And then there's this album's intended audience--kids--to consider. Children ages 6 and up will be left spellbound by the Seal Maiden's fantastic saga, and those under 6 will be lulled into sweet dreams by its gentle-voiced, exceptionally talented singers, whose far-off land of salty waves and endless possibilities they evoke so gracefully. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The essence of Ireland.......2006-07-30

We are American but have lived in Ireland, and this this CD captures Ireland's essence like no other, both its sounds and its story -- so much so that it make me heartsick every time I hear it. It is also absolutely beatiful. Karen Casey's voice, both speaking and singing, is absolutely pure. Just wonderful for both children and adults, whether or not you know anything about Ireland or Celtic music.

5 out of 5 stars Catching Moon beams..........2005-05-31

This is that rarest of all things- music that is great for kids OR grown-ups.

The songs are wonderful, the musicians are the "all-star" heavyweights of Celtic music, the singing and playing is GREAT and Karan's narration and singing is mesmerizing.

Most of the songs are in English, a few are in Gaelic and the overall effect is transcendent.

A GREAT way to introduce someone of any age to the wonderful world of Celtic music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Nap time song for Preschoolers.......2005-02-27

This is by far the best CD to play at nap time for children ages 3-6.

5 out of 5 stars Casey is a Seal Maiden.......2004-06-15

Karan Casey is a perfect choice for this because she has a beautiful, pure, and expressive singing and speaking voice, one of the best I've heard in Irish music. I love the kids singing on the wiggly eels and the salty waves songs and Iarla O'Lionaird adds a somber tone to the disc. The singers and sound effects create a very real atmosphere and the music blends easily with the story, sometimes overlapping. It's good to know there are such high quality recordings for children.

5 out of 5 stars CELTIC MUSIC ROCKS!.......2004-02-04

I have recently participated in this spectacular musical and this version of it is extremely well done. It includes all the ethnic instruments you would hope would be in a celtic sound track. If you are looking for a good story or if you just need to hear the sounds of the emerald isle, I suggest purchasing this CD. It is really worth it.
Thank you,
Linsey Sandyman

5 out of 5 stars Women of Eire share songs of loves gained and lost............2004-04-07

Celtic Sisters: The Women of Ireland, is a treasure of Celtic music sung by various young Irish female singers. Their music springs from one of the liveliest of musical traditions and reflects one of the Western world's oldest cultures. Now from across the Atlantic comes a whole new generation of songwriters and performers featured in this wonderful1998 St. Clair CD release.

Of the 12 tracks in this beautiful compilation of Irish love songs and tales of romances that have either survived or died, my favorite songs are "This Moment" sung by Fiona Joyce, which tells how a woman can feel with her heart for someone. "Ooneyal Rain" by Orla, tells of yearning for a lost love, "I Remember" by Marian Bradfield, is a tale of remembered passion between a woman and her lover. "Everywhere I Go" by Rosemary Woods, tells a story of how love should ideally be with someone. "Little White Lies" (Bradfield again) has a gentle yet bittersweet tempo as she recalls how much she loved someone until their relationship ended.

These are songs that will reach out and touch your heart. There is such power in the singers' voices that I've found myself listening to this CD over and over. The songs can make you feel how love can either lift you to the sky and keep you on Cloud Nine or dash to the ground with the pain of losing the one you love.

Even though some of the songs in Celtic Sisters are indeed very heartrending, nevertheless I am glad that I found this beautiful album while searching for Celtic music to add to my music library.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Sisters.......2002-11-19

I was totally surprised when I first listened to this cd. It is a blend between traditional and contemporary celtic music and very beautiful to say the least. It would be useful to note that country or bluegrass music originated from Irish and Scottish imigrants that settled in the "highlands" of America! One can really hear the influence in this music as contempary celtic music takes a classy country turn.

2 out of 5 stars just buy Rebecca Pidgeon.......2002-04-21

This CD was not what I expected in the least. I saw the CD cover, and not having listened even a little bit, expected old fashioned Celtic folk music. Two tracks live up to that expectation.. #6, The Haughs of Cromdale (by far the best track on the CD) and #1, Fhear a Ohata (also good). These tracks are what make the CD worth buying, if it is at all. But for these songs, you might as well not buy the CD. Those two tracks are by the same artist, Rebecca Pidgeon (by no coincidence), and I would recommend buying Pidgeon's CD "The Four Marys".. which features these two songs, and has a number of other pleasant songs. The two other tracks I like on the CD are #s 4, "Short a Penny" and 12, "High Ground". Track 4 gives me the image of Beggars walking the street in 19th Century Dublin... and Track 4 might as well be a pop song. The main thing I noticed most on this CD is that, excepting tracks 6 and 1, these songs sound more like Country Western/Jazz than Celtic. The vocals are all great, but the lack of Celtic instruments is very dissapointing. Most tracks have piano and bass... which by themselves don't sound Celtic at all. So again, If you are looking for old fashioned Celtic Folk, you're better off with Rebecca Pidgeon's CD than wasting money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2000-09-04

I think that this is a beautiful cd. The best songs- ( ithink) are Donegal Rain, and West of Eden. If you like this- Mau I also recommend Darby DeVon's Highlands.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully orchestrated music.......1999-12-09

This cd provides entertainment to those who enjoy folk music. The vocals are comfortably unique. The music is extremely laid back and is great to listen to while working. Celtic Sisters is a brilliant collection of songs.

4 out of 5 stars Celtic Frost - 'Morbid Tales' (Noise) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-11-29

Originally unleashed in 1984, as this was the Swiss black metal trio's first album. Can't believe they're actually back and touring the states again. This is 'take no prisoner' low-key see-your-ugly-hide-in-hades type of death metal. The playing on this record is superb. Tunes that I liked on this CD reissue just AS much as I did when I first heard 'em when they first came out on vinyl are "Visions Of Mortality","Dethroned Emperor"(great riffs),the noisy "Danse Macabre" and the death rattling "Procreation(Of The Wicked)". Line-up: Tom Warrior-guitar&vocals,Martin Eric Ain-bass and Reed St.Mark-drums. Should very much draw in fans of Coroner,Venom,Stormtroopers Of Death,In Ruins and Manowar. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars PROCREATION OF THE WICKED!!!!.......2006-10-11

Celtic Frost Jams. The band is pure bad. If you like heavy thrash music you should love any of the first three Frost albums. Morbid Tales, Emperors Return, To Mega Therion. Some may say these guy weren't good musicians but I've yet to hear music like this come from any so called "good musician". Celtic Frost created some of the coolest rythms I ever heard on guitar and Tom G Warriors vocal are purely wicked. UUHH!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ignoramus test.......2006-09-17

I had to give this 5 stars just to balance the ignorances who give it one. well, i'd give it 5 stars anyway. If you don't like it, you ain't metal!!!

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the nonsense below..........2006-09-12

The two reviews written prior to mine are pure examples of ignorance. I'll keep this short and to the point, Celtic Frost is a superb band that is worth investigation. This is the band at their most raw and primal stage. Though there are slight instances of sameiness, there is enough raw energy and diversity here to produce one of the most memorable trash albums in history.

I do not expect this review to be a major aid to one's investigation of Celtic Frost. All I can say is that as a multi-faceted music fan (From this to Love's "Forever Changes" to Ravi Shankar) this is worth a shot if you want to give legitimate metal a chance.

Anybody who thinks that "Future World" can hold a candle to, let alone surpass, "Procreation of the Wicked" needs to stop watching Lord of the Rings habitually and acquaint themselves with some decent taste (and rent Elephant).

More brogue and blarney than you'd get from the Bold O'Donough. This is a fun visit with the boys - older and thicker at the middle, but in fine voice, harmony and spirit Renditions of CB standards like the Wild Colonial Boy and Risin' of the Moon are mature and rousing, and The Parting Glass is just lovely. The only things wrong with this in-concert recording are that there isn't more of it, and that I wasn't there.

    5 out of 5 stars One Of Jackie's Best.......2007-03-27

Released after Forbidden Songs Of The Dying West this is one Of Jackie Levens best releases.
One of the best tracks is Extremely Violent Man which is a regular inclusion at Jackie Levens gigs. There are many other good tracks as well but you will just have to listen to the album as I am to lazy to list them.
One of the good points about Jackie Leven's earlier releases is the Scottish and Northern English sound throughout which is unmistakeable.
This is great original music and any Jackie Leven album is worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars shallow is not the word.......2005-12-24

Even though Jackie Leven can sometimes come off as a somewhat doom laden individual, Fairytales For Hardmen is still one of his strongest and rewarding albums. This isn't (as earlier reviewers have concluded) a complete `concept` album with modern day `fairytales` for the taking, but more of a personal diary of his journeying from a boy to a man.

FYI his vocal range was compromised by being nearly murdered back in London in the mid 80's, so if that doesn't give you a notion as to the kind of wells he's drawing from then steer clear of the album. Here are my personal favourites from the Fairytales

    Desolation Blues
    Poortoun
    Walled Coves of Ravenscraig
    Sad Polish Song
Mad as the Mist and Snow
    Listening to Crows Pray

The whole album is great and a must-have for any fans of Leonard Cohen or Van Morrison.

4 out of 5 stars Jackie Leven - Honestly and naked.......2001-05-18

The first time I heard Jackie Leven I thought he had to be the most depressed man on earth..But after listening at this CD,"fairy tales for hard men",I began to hear the beauty of his words and music. To hear something this naked, simple and honestly must be a reveal for our souls. And if you listen carefully, there are hidden messages in every song.I also recommend "The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death". Be openminded when you listen to Jackie Leven. You may even learn something of him....

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointingly shallow.......2001-01-19

While the songs on this CD can honestly be called harsh in their depictions of reality, they fall far short of fairytale stature in their repeated lack of resolution. This seems more an album meant to justify the hardness of being a man rather than offering insights into nature of this hardness. The singer's voice seems strained on some of the songs, but the listener is unable to tell whether this is from emotion or from vocal limits.

5 out of 5 stars contemporary Celtic with a Pagan slant.......2002-07-19

This CD is a utter delight. It's not easy to find solid, well produced music with strong Pagan themes. If you're a fan of celtic music or on an Eclectic path this CD is well worth the ... bucks it costs. I have 7 or 8 of the Celtic Tales CD's and this is one of the better ones.

5 out of 5 stars Great Vocal Collection.......2001-08-28

This is a wonderfull c.d. that combines traditional and modern celtic vocal music. Each song is wonderfully sung, from "the green man" to "pheonix". This colection is a wonderfull part of the entire celtic tales series and anyone who loves celtic music should deffinately check this one out.
