If you are a fan of the pipes, then you will like this CD. It does not disapoint. Don't be cheap; buy the CD. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent playing, creative fusion with Battlefield Band.......1999-05-30

This is one of my favorites in a collection of 15 or so pipe CD's. The Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band is among the world's premier bands (witness their multiple world championships), and this CD does not disappoint in superbly played traditional pipe and drum selections. A pleasant surprise is the creative and pleasing fusion on some numbers with the Battlefield Band. I normally like pipes and drums with no musical accompaniment, but this is an extraordinary exception.

4 out of 5 stars An artist with lots of potential.......2004-05-09

Jonathan Adams' preformance of Sanz Canarios is what first drew me in. It's full of joy and energy with variations of color and volume that no other artist that I have heard do canarios which includes John Williams (very straight forward and very fast), Yepes (slower but still straight forward), Parkening (fast and full of energy similar to Admas' in many ways but not as colorful. Adams is the only performer who uses variation in color that make the piece even more interesting. This goes the the entire CD as well. The only draw back is that Jonathan Adams does not quite have the polish of the other artist mentioned. What Adams lacks in polish he makes up for in passionate performances. He plays an exicting Koyunbaba movements I and IV, I just wish he had included the entire piece.

The recording is variable but very good. It's too closely miked on the New Age type of music and slightly to close for the classical selections.

I would love to hear more of this artist hopefully playing more classical works and complete works not just movements of works and have a little bit better recording by placing the mics a little further away from the guitar with more room ambiance.

Overall a very good first CD. 4 stars.

The Chieftains may be the best-known folk band from Ireland, but Altan are the best. This is meant as no disrespect to the Chieftains, who dominated the genre in times past and continue to make good music today, but Altan have achieved a musical peak that's impossible to ignore. Because most of their vocals are in Gaelic rather than English and because their instrumental dance tunes stick close to their folk origins, Altan may be less accessible than the Chieftains, but the sheer beauty of the music will reward the patient listener. Two Nashville figures--singer Alison Krauss and dobroist Jerry Douglas--as well as Chieftains flutist Matt Molloy help out on Altan's new album, Runaway Sunday, but the recording is dominated by Altan's co-founder and undisputed leader, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, a virtuoso of the legendary fiddle tradition of her native County Donegal. With her quick bow, she is able to articulate each individual note, no matter how quickly it passes by, and to string them together into lines that seem to sing. And when she sings herself, her soprano has the same resonant tone and sure phrasing as her violin. Her five bandmates (who play accordion, bouzouki, second fiddle and two acoustic guitars) follow her so closely that the group seems to move and breathe as one.

Instrumentals, organized into six medleys and a stand-alone piece, dominate, but it's the quality of the songs that make this the most impressive Altan album yet. Ni Mhaonaigh has found a kindred spirit in Krauss, and only a slight Irish accent separates the two singers on an exquisite version of Robert Burns's "I Wish My Love Was a Red Red Rose." Ni Mhaonaigh herself wrote "A Moment in Time" as a tribute to the older Irish musicians who passed the tradition on to her generation, and the lyrics' visual details, the slow, surprising melody, and the breathy vocal all convey an unmistakable affection. The album climaxes with "Time Has Passed," Ni Mhaonaigh's heart-breaking elegy for her late husband and former co-bandleader, Frankie Kennedy. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars This has turned into a runaway favorite in the Altan dept........2005-06-13

I (also) bought this for my Scotch/Irish heritage wife (Valentines Day - see the heart) to keep her in the happy Irish "commute music" (as she calls it) groove. Well, this IS calming, happy, smooth, beautiful, melodic and nicely done from beginning to end. We have three other Altan cd's (older ones) and this is my favorite so far, and in the top five of our substantial folk collection. Runaway Sunday feels more personal in a way - less Irish pub party, more Irish lullaby. All of the songs are great, but a few of them are knock-outs...so gorgeous! The singing sounds even more sweet than usual (aren't these Irish gals beguiling?) and the musicians are finessing the groove in an accomplished and compelling way. It appears to me that the (more out front than some of the other albums) guitar players have really picked it up and carried the music higher. Guest musicians like Alison Kraus, Jerry Douglas and others add to the magic and layered quality. Great music to take you off to dreamland or other evening activities (I often have to remind my wife to bring it in from the car)! Nice packaging with good track notes, lyrics, etc. Enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but still pretty good...........2000-06-10

This was a present for my wife, who loves to listen to Altan on our multi-disk changer. As a result I've learned that this isn't their best effort, but is still pretty good. Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh is spellbinding, but the nature of the recording is subtly different from previous works, and doesn't sound quite as bright nor bold. Maybe it's just me, but I'm pretty sure that this, while still amazing, could have been just a little better.

4 out of 5 stars Wish I could say differently.......2000-02-11

I know I'll be roasted on a spit by my fellow fans for saying this, but since Frankie Kennedy passed away, some of the texture and quality of Altan has faded. This may be partly because they signed with a major label, and partly because Frankie had a tempering influence on his wife, whose name I won't spell for fear of offending through error, and whose inestimable fiddling skill disproportionately dominates this album. I still buy and listen to their albums, and I'm not unhappy with them; I just think they were better when they were with an indie label and there were two stars in the family.

If you get the opportunity to see this band, as I did, do not miss it. You will witness traditional Irish music at it's very best. The sheer professionalism of the musicianship and crystal clear voice of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh are a joy to the ear. No finer exponent of the art, in my opinion. Having said that, this 1997 release is bang in line with the quality of previous offerings. Just buy it!

Named the number 7 CD for 2005 by New Age Reporter, Meadow Run brings you lots of pastoral beauty. You might not think a steel-string guitar could transmit the beauty, warmth and spirit of the natural world to you, but it does. The artist is a forester and -- again -- has translated her experiences in the woods into a musical trek through the woods everyone can enjoy.

Mellow and invigorating all at once, this album is great for background music or intense listening. The extra special treat on the album is a track playing on a baroque lute. What a lovely, throaty sound that instrument has!
