The Rough Guide to Zydeco

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Zydeco is the rollicking accordion-led dance music of Louisiana's Creole culture. It was invented by people of color whose ancestry included freed slaves and groups with whom they intermarried. It not to be confused with the European-derived Cajun style created by descendants of French settlers from Nova Scotia. Zydeco, while as infectiously melodic, is rhythmically harder-edged than Cajun music and incorporates R&B, soul and hip-hop. While popular lore places it in New Orleans, the groove actually developed in the countryside, where groups of Francophone musicians formed combos fronted by squeezeboxes and frottiors, a metal washboard peculiar to Zydeco which was adapted into a vest in the interest of efficiency. Modern bands commonly include electric guitars, bass and keyboards. This set showcases some of the genre's indelible hits, from Rockin' Sidney's playfully belligerent My Toot Toot, to Clifton Chenier's Calinda, to Beau Joque's virile take on John Lee Hooker's Voodoo Chile. --Christina Roden

Product Description
Zydeco is the driving accordion-led dance music of the Louisiana Creoles. Originally of French origin, it has been heavily influenced by American rhythm and blues, soul and, in recent years, rap and hip-hop. Zydeco is distinct from its local cousin Cajun, and continues to flourish in the rural southwest Louisiana prairie towns. Featuring zydeco legends such as Clifton Chenier and Buckwheat Zydeco, The Rough Guide To Zydeco presents some of the best Louisianan music, filled with the sounds of the accordion and the frottoir, a percussion instrument with an unmistakable rasp.

"I hate world music," wrote David Byrne, who went on to explain that he disliked a vague marketing label that ghettoized the majority of the world's music. The Rough Guiders who compiled this insanely far-flung anthology, conversely, apparently adore the term's catchall nature. Which is why you'll find everything from Colombian salsa fireball Joe Arroyo to the Gaelic "mouth music" of Scot singer Talitha MacKenzie here and a whole lot more. World music usually signifies roots less than fusion, which is why Mali singer Oumou Sangare's electrified traditionalism sounds just fine beside the avant-psychedelic guitar of Henry Kaiser and Malagasy singer Roger Georges. A certain disproportion is probably inevitable. Africa, with its incomparable dance rhythms, weighs in heavy with contributions by Youssou N'Dour (Senegal), Zaiko Langa Langa (Zaire), and Cecile Kayirebwa (Rwanda), while Asia is represented only by Guo Yue and Joji Hirota's flute duo. Irish folk, Louisiana zydeco, and Nubian blues are also represented here. But anyone interested in learning more about these artists will have to refer back to The Rough Guide to World Music for more information. --Richard Gehr

Well, I am definitely new to this reviewing thing. But, since nobody has reviewed this cd yet, I felt that it is my duty to do so!! The Rough Guide Series is an excellent guide to discovering new world music. I've never been to Louisiana, but have always dreamed of going there! This cd is one of the reasons why. Look at the rich music heritage that comes from this state. It is the birthplace of Cajun, Zydeco, Blue, Jazz, Gospel, and R&B. This cd includes all of these genres of music. This is not just music of New Orleans, but other cities in the state. Americans out there, this is a great introduction to what comes from this country!! This cd includes the very famous songs, "Iko Iko" and "You Are My Sunshine." The famous Buckwheat Zydeco and Dr. John are featured as well as many names that may be new to you.
