The film "Ladies In Lavender" is touching and a tear jerker, but, so well done. Having the film on DVD was not enough, I needed to have the CD to play when I am driving. The violin virtuosity of Joshua Bell is magnificient and so pleasing to hear when relaxation is desired.

I can't speak more highly of this collection of Pavrotti's songs. I keep this two CD pack in my car so I can enjoy it on my way to and from work. Even after I have arrived, I find myself sitting in my car waiting for a song to end. Walking out on a song seems sacriligious. While I grew up listening to Caruso and Lanza, there is no question that Pavrotti is the Master! Although, I do have to admit Pavrotti has the greater advantage of modern recording technology to better present his talent than Caruso and Lanza had. However, Lanza definitely didn't have the power that Pavrotti has. With Caruso, we will never know... I highly recommend this collection of Pavrotti's, if you are a Pavrotti fan. If you aren't, buy it anyway and become one:)

Every song sounds the same.......2007-04-13

My husband and I buy many Italian CDs so we think we have good judgement after so many purchases. We were somewhat disappointed in this CD. Every song has the same instrumentation and basically sounds the same. We wonder even if the mandolins are "live" or just canned, they sound so tinny and the same each song. This CD could have used more feeling, romance, whatever...possible had there been some sensitive arrangements with solos, etc. Instead, it was the same bunch of mandolin sounds which made for a very boring CD, in our opinion. A few vocals would have helped the monotony, too. Would not recommend.

This is a great album of really very traditional Italian music. It is not anglicised but just like you hear when you go to Italian festas.

Excellent....Perfect! We recently had an Italian themed dinner party and needed just the right instrumental background/mood music. Mandolins from Italy was perfect. We also needed it FAST. Althought shipping was not cheap, we received it on time and made our party a hit.

I love this music. It takes me back to my childhood when my Dad played the mandolin and my uncle accompanied him on guitar. Some old Italian melodies and some new ones to sing along with. Very nice.

Cornucopia of Pavarotti's works.......2007-03-01

This is a "Super hits" CD, with over forty different cuts (quite a few of which have appeared elsewhere, of course). For those who are aficionados of Pavarotti, this is what might be called "hog heaven."

Disc 1 features estimable works such as "Nessun dorma" (well done, with his voice showing to good effect), "Che gelida manina" (excellently done, with good characterization), ""Celeste Aida" (elegantly sung), "Di quella pira" (a much better than average version), "E lucevan le stelle" (Pavarotti does a nice job in the Puccini-Verdi repertoire), "La donna e mobile" (sung with aplomb), "Recondita armonia" (the other aria from Tosca, which also shows Pavarotti's voice off to good effect), and so on.

Disc 2 is especially interesting, because it features a more popular set of works, from the redoubtable "O sole mio" (richly orchestrated and nicely sung, not overpowered by Pavarotti's operatic voice), "Core n'grato" (compare with Caruso's version), "Oh, holy night," "La danza" (spritely sung with excellent breath control in a treacherous song), "Santa Lucia" (again, smoothly sung), "Ave Maria" (seemingly sung with respect and affection).

A cornucopia of Pavarottiana. For those fans of Pavarotti, this "greatest hits" collection will be welcome. For those who may not be aware of this tenor when his voice was still fresh, this is a fine entrée to his work.

Don't...!!!.......2005-01-24

To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."

Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality.......2004-10-11

I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.

I particularily enjoy the first disc which contains just about all the major tenor arias. The singing is superb and listening to this CD it becomes obvious what the fuss over the pre-3 Tenors Pavarotti was all about - the man really did have one of the greatest tenor voices of all time.
His diction was flawless, his line perfect and his interpretation in keeping with the greatest of the Italian tenors of days gone by.

The second disc is interesting in that it is a bit uneven. It contains a few neapolitan standards, a x-mas song, a duet with Frank Sinatra and some other random selections.

Overall this is a 5 star CD but due to the extremely low volume, particularily on the first and most important disc I can only give it a 4 star rating.

On a final note, anyone puzzeled by the current hype over the now againg and commercially over-blown Pavarotti should purchase this CD. This is the great tenor in his prime and as such a CD well worth having...even if you're not a Pavarotti fan.
I'm still not, but I recognize greatness when I hear it.

Great Music......Horrible Mastering.......2004-07-24

Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.
The song choices are good with the exception of "My Way" with Frank Sinatra. Both singers sound ....ummm...let's just say less than their best on the recording. It sits out like a boil on a pretty girl's face.

With his wondrous soaring vocals and the humble demeanor within his strong body, Pavarotti is an inspiration to Italian- Americans everywhere - Italian-Americans like me. My family plays his beautiful operas on vinyl nearly every day in me Papa's little wine and cheese shop on 18th and Broadway. The customers compliment the music with glee, pinching my plump cheeks with merriment and wishing me well on their way out the door. Ah, how I love this land of America!!

Noticeably different from the original soundtrack, but that doesn't make it any less fantastic........2006-11-10

When I first reading the reviews to this Soundtrack collection, I was a bit skeptical, as I read many reviews which mentioned the differences among this collection and the original soundtracks. Being a huge fan of the films and their music, I was a bit nervous about my purchase, but figured how bad could it sound? It's the Godfather!

However, when I got the CD in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised. While I did notice some differences (Tarantella sounds somewhat changed) between the Collection songs and the original analogs, they were not a change for worse. These tracks produced the same, if not greater emotional response than those from the films.

Listening to the whole soundtrack is a great experience from beginning to end for fans of the films and their music, and I absolutely praise the Prague Philharmonic orchestra, Crouch End Festival Chorus, and conductor Paul Bateman for their excellent transition of the original work into this 30th Anniversary collection.

If you like the music from the films, get this disc!

I would not like to repeat what another reviewer said there: this is no original soundtrack. It is a very professional - and very uninspired - job by Prague Philarmonic who might have followed the music sheet but they lost the magic.

Yes, the tunes are memorable and, right from the first movements, they evoke the ghosts of complex cinematic imagery that are so deeply ingrained in the mind of anyone who loves this film. But the magic is gone. You know it's not THE soundtrack, and you've heard the real thing so many times.

The truth is that if you had Pavarotti to sing classic songs of The Rolling Stones, you would be disappointed with the result - despite the fact that Luciano has a much better voice than Mick Jagger.

Those artists who recorded the original soundtrack 30 years ago in Hollywood - and who remembers their names today? - were probably not as accomplished as the Prague Philarmonic. But they created the real thing, and therefore this cover disc will forever be no more than nice background music. That's all I use it for.

I bought this after watching the movies for the first time, and listened to it, without noticing any difference. I just went, "what an amazing remastering job", then I saw that they were re-recorded. I never thought there was that big a difference when watching the movies over and over, and I really scrutinize re-recordings generally(like those done for Star Wars).

I bought the regular Godfather 1 cd after this, and I've hardly touched it since I bought it. I think this Godfather Trilogy is far superior in audio quality and performance. I think it has more feeling then the originals.

Disappointing performance of classic Godfather music..........2003-01-09

I am a die-hard Godfather afficianado and I was terribly disappointed in this CD. When I purchased it, I didn't realize it was not a recording of the original soundtrack from the movie. Instead, it is a reproduction of the songs by The City of Prague Philharmonic. The performance is technically accurate, but does not at *all* convey the emotion of the movie's moments. It's as if the musicians studied the score, but never saw the movie. In track after track, the rhythms are not quite right, the mood is not set, etc, which is jarring for someone who knows the movies well. If you just want to hear some pleasing music, buy this CD. If you intend to buy a CD of The Godfather soundtrack in order to re-experience the magic of the Godfather movies themselves, look elsewhere.

Okay so track #1 aside..........2005-12-14

I got this as a gift last Christmas and just got around to writing a review. To start off with, let me say that I think Pavarotti is the greatest tenor ever. Period. His command of his voice (breath control, relaxation, etc.) were absolutely flawless, and no he never shouted (except when he was getting old and losing his voice...maybe), cause I have never heard anyone shout with vibrato. Anyways, yes I have heard better accompanyments than Caruso's (track #1) on a certain children's show that will remain unnamed but it features a large purple dinosaur, but that doesn't ruin the entire CD for me like it did for the other reviewers. Let's face it the rest of the CD is Pavarotti classics. You won't find a better Nessun Dorma anywhere. His La Danza is wonderful, his L'elisir is legendary and La Boheme's Rodolfo is one of, if not his truly signature role. As for the Neapolitan songs, you can't criticize him for those. It's no different than Kathleen Battle throwing in a few spirituals on her CDs. Yes, I wish there were more arias on the CD (Ah! Mes amis for instance) but still was not dissappointed by this CD at all. Buy it!

What the heck?.......2005-09-12

I'm so glad I didn't pay for this disc, instead checking it out from the my public library. The first track, "Caruso", had me thinking I was playing the wrong CD. It's not so much that it's electronic accompaniment. It's really bad synthesizer music. Horribly bad. Inexcusably bad. Cheap-lounge-singer-who-can't-afford-a-piano bad. That train wreck of track sets exactly the worst tone, destroying the mood for the rest of the album. If it weren't for some of the later selections from La Bohème and L'Elisir d'Amore, this CD would be a total loss. Even then, these gems are completely drowned in a gushing flow of treacly Italian "classics" apparently aimed at a certain demographic of blue-haired, tittering Pavarotti fans. I don't mean to sound like a snob. It's just the bad vibe from that first track rattling me. My advice: get it from the library and listen to your favorites. Avoid everything else on pain of intense aural assault.

The Very Best Of Luciano Pavarotti.......2004-01-28

This weekend I purchased "The Very Best of Luciano Pavarotti", Romantica. The first track, Caruso is terrible. Classical music, opera, etc, should never be played with synthesized anything! This is especially true with voices like Pavarotti's. This first track was CHEAP and tinny sounding.

Pavarotti is good, but I think that the title is misleading.

Classical music should be with real musical instruments. Lesson #1, if it takes electricity, it's NOT a musical instrument.

From Calaf's "Nessun dorma" from Turandot, in which the singer exclaims his love for the ice princess and the victory he will have over her, through Lionel's realization that he will have a new life and be happy with Lady Harriet in Martha ("M'appari"), and on to Rodolfo's falling in love with Mimi in La Bohème when he touches her hand ("Che gelida manina"): here we have some of opera's most beautiful love songs, sung by Pavarotti when he was in his golden-voiced prime. His "Una furtiva lagrima" is touching and gentle, while his rendition of the Neapolitan song "Core 'ngrato"--a diatribe against his lover's rejection of him--is heartbreaking. Radames's hymn to Aida ("Celeste Aida") in which he sees Aida as "the splendor of [his] life," is glorious, and all of the other selections are equally fine. Everybody knows Pavarotti has a good voice, whatever he sings it sounds great. In this CD I think he sounds better than the more recent recordings from him, e.g. the three tenor concerts. In my opinion I like "Una Furtiva Lagrima" the most, when his voice comes out he devoted such a sincerity throughout the song, I can just imagine that I am inside an opera house watching an excellent performance. "Nessun Dorma", which is one of his most "famous in singing well" aria, also excellent, his high notes are so beautiful and always beautiful (well...he is a king of high C man~ for real I rarely heard ppl can sing high notes better than him), but personally I like Franco Corelli singing "Nessun Dorma" more, and "Vesti la guibba" too (but of coz pavarotti also sound really good in this aria). As I read from some books, they said Pavarotti is the biggest lyric tenor nowadays, I think it is pretty true though. But one thing I found Pavarotti not "perfect" is, when he sings, mostly I just feel that "wow he sings this note beautifully", or "he sings everything perfectly", but not always have a feeling of "wow he melts my heart", or "wow he makes such a great atmosphere throughout the song", maybe because of his song selections. In general case I like Domingo and Mario Lanza better, when I heard Domingo sings I almost always feel his passion, musical sense, and communication to the audience; but in Pavarotti I dont always feel that, in this CD some of the song has this tiny problem too (like in "E lucevan le stelle", I really think he just "sounds well", I like Jose Carreras singing this song much better), but well this is just my personal opinion. However, his voice is a "legendary beautiful voice", that's 120% true. Again personally I highly recommend his "una furtiva lagrima", listen it and you won't regret it.

One of Pavarotti's best CDs.......2003-11-21

This is one of the best Pavarotti CDs I have listened to. It contains a great selection of 17 arias and Italian lyric songs. However, if you can afford it, "Pavarotti Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection" will offer more in a 2-CD set (a total of 41 arias and Italian lyric songs).

Luciano's greatest compilation CD.......2000-04-28

For over three decades Maestro Luciano Pavarotti has brought joy to human ears all around the world. Sure, the critics may scoff at the big arena concerts and at the later years' natural darkening of his voice. But we the fans just know that listening to him lifts our spirits and opens our hearts to the glory of human voice.

And that's exactly what this collection is all about. To compile it, the Decca producers used material from three albums: "Arias" (his earliest), "Favorite Neapolitan Songs" and "Passione," as well as some complete opera recordings such as "La Boheme" and "Rigoletto." The song "La Danza," Rossini's engaging tarantella is from a rare album "Pavarotti in Concert in Bologna" with Richard Bonynge. Most of these selections, therefore, are from 60s and 70s, in other words, Pavarotti's prime years. As he was establishing himself as one of the all-time greatest tenors on stage, he gave an all-out effort on recordings. And it shows. Listen to the vocal line in "Che gelida manina"; the breath control on "la speranza" is truly unbelievable. There is his signature aria "Nessun Dorma" and, of course, a song often mistaken for Italian National Anthem - Di Capua's "O Sole Mio!"

In addition to magnificent vocal pyrotechnics, Pavarotti's considerable acting-with-voice skills are represented on such demanding arias as "Celeste Aida" and "Vesti la Giubba". And it's a real treat to hear his Duca singing sparkling "La donna e mobile."

This is an excellent introduction to opera as well as a delightful morsel for seasoned fans. I found that it also makes a great gift idea; after all, no one can resist Pavarotti after the final "Vincero!"

Mary Martin created Broadway's most famous "trousers" role in the original 1954 cast of Peter Pan, but former Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby has proven to be a worthy successor. She earned a Tony nomination for the 1991 revival, has toured extensively, and starred in the 2000 video production. While the classic J.M. Great revival to the Original .......2005-03-14

Ever since I saw Cathy Rigby play Peter Pan in the 1997 production I was like Holy crap she plays this role very well!
The production on this CD is very well done! Unlike Mary Martin's CD! Mary Martin's CD is the worst Peter Pan CD I've ever heard! Cathy Rigby on the other hand she beats Mary Martin's production by a huge landslide! They also add parts of the play into the CD which makes the CD even more exciting! I saw Cathy Rigby on her final tour of Peter Pan and she was so amazing! Cathy Rigby Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

excellent studio recording of PETER PAN.......2004-01-21

This 1997 studio cast album of PETER PAN is a fine testament to this magical musical. Cathy Rigby, star of various Broadway runs and national tours of the show, gives thrilling voice to the title character, and is joined by a first-rate supporting cast.

Paul Schoeffler, also a veteran of the Broadway/national tour, is a great Captain Hook, especially during "Hook's Waltz" and "Hook's Tango". Traditionally, he also portrays the bombastic Mr Darling.

Elisa Sagardia is, like Rigby and Schoeffler, reprising her role of Wendy from the Broadway/national tour. She gives a lovely weight to "Tender Shepherd" and "Distant Melody". She also has a great voice.

Rounding out the cast are Susan Lamontagne as Tiger Lily, Lee Honey-Jones as John, Myles Anderson as Michael, Helen Hobson as Mrs Darling, Anne McVey as Liza, Susan Dale as Jane, Julian Forsythe as Smee and Jenny Agutter as the Narrator. [CDJAY 1280]

A great revival.......2000-12-31

Forty some ye3ars ago I saw Peter Pan on its premier performance on television. I bought the record with Mary Martin and I have loved it. I have to say that the Cathy Rigby recording is even better. Cathy beings a youthful presence in her songs. The recording itself is technologically better. The recording includes bits from the play not on the original. And the whole recoding seems to have a life the original does not have. "I'm Flying" is exhilerating. "Once Upon a Time Long Ago" has a more haunting ache. The timing of the songs is different, but not worse than the original. Ms. Rigby is not trying to copy Ms. Martin. Which means for Peter Pan lovers there are two distinctive performances to appreciate. I wish I could see Ms. Rigby on stage. I saw Sandy Duncan some years ago and she was good. This is a great recording.

An Outstanding Collection.......2002-02-12

Here is Perlman at the top of his game- performing short Romantic and turn-of-the-century gems. Perlman has always seemed to revel in this specific era in classical music. From Glazunov's fiery Mazurka, to Pablo de Sarasate's virtuosic jaunt, to the simple, romatic charm of Kreisler's "Schon Rosmarin", Itzhak Perlman and the Abbey Road Ensemble deliver with graceful mastery. I've never heard Massenet's Meditations from "Thais" performed with more passion and elegance.
A lot of violinists, myself included, feel that Perlman has had a rather inconsistent recording career, and A La Carte should be impressive and refreshing for his critics. The exceptional sound quality of this recording makes it a very involving experience and great addition to any audiophile's collection. I never tire of this album, and it is a mainstay and a favorite in my collection. I recommend it 100%.

Gorgeous playing, beautiful pieces........1998-10-29

This collection of rarely performed pieces is a fantastic record. Perlman's playing, as usual, is a feast for the ears. The lush accompaniment is equally beautiful. The pieces are accessible to the classical connoisseur as well as the novice. This is the perfect album for a winter afternoon around the house.

Since establishing himself as the most exciting vibraphonist of his generation, Stefon Harris has strived to establish himself as an exciting conceptualist as well. He overextended himself with his 70-minute Grand Unification Theory (2003), written for a 12-member ensemble, but creates something warmly cohesive in reworking selections from Duke Ellington's "New Orleans Suite" (1970) and "Queen's Suite" (1959) and crowning them with excerpts from his own Ellington-minded "Gardner Meditations." There is no lack of Dukish flavor here--not with trombonist Steve Turre's muted growls, clarinetist Greg Tardy's emulations of the great Jimmy Hamilton and bassist Derrick Hodge's percussive nod to the early Ellington bassist memorialized on Duke's "Portrait of Wellman Braud." But Harris is after more of a classical feel with his use of cello, viola and flute. The atmosphere can get a bit too rarified for Ellington, but this 12-person cast gets his bluesy, shifting overtones right and the interplay between the leader and pianist Xavier Davis energizes the sound--especially on the hypnotic "Sunset and the Mockingbird" from the 1959 suite. Harris' lovely, shimmering "African Tarentella" makes you want to hear the rest of "The Gardner Meditations," a commissioned work written while he was in residence at Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, in its entirety. --Lloyd Sachs

I urge each of you to pick a copy of the new Stefon Harris album "African Tarantella: Dances with Duke" on Blue Note Records.

This album is amazing and it has very nice reworking of some of Duke Ellington's compositions on it. I think, especially after hearing this outstanding album, that jazz has a bright future ahead of it thanks to Stefon Harris.

The recording of this album is also something to talk about. The production is very well done. The engineering is fantastic, but all of these things are expected on a prestigous jazz label like Blue Note.

Stefon Harris has really crafted a beautiful album full of fascinating rhythms, textures, and most of all compositions. All of the musicians have done a remarkable job with this album. Some highlights for me are "Portrait of Wellman Braud," "Single Pedal Of A Rose," and the title track, but in all honesty all of the tunes are inspiring and interesting.

Don't hesitate for a second and pick this album up. I also recommend Stefon's other albums, most notably "The Grand Unification Theory" and "Evolution." All of which are great.

To the reviewer who don't like the name "Afican Tarantella." What's in a name? Look at the names of Rashaan Roland Kirk's, Charles Mingus' or Thelonius Monk's compositions. Give me a break! If you think the name "Trinkle, Tinkle" is a clever name you're greatly mistaken. You don't have an argument anyway. It's the MUSIC that is being reviewed not the title of the album. To the other reviewer who would have liked to hear the full versions of these Duke Ellington suites instead of selections, get a grip. I would've liked to hear him do a whole album of nothing but Duke Ellington's music, but what he should've or could've done doesn't hold any validation in the writing of a review. If you have a problem with the music itself or the production of the album, then you have a reason to write a review, but if the only arguments you guys can come up with are what he could've or shouldn't have done, then you're fighting a loosing battle.

"African Tarantella" is easily the best jazz album to come out of 2006.

harris's playing is inspired, which makes this one reason to listen to this recording. another reason are the selections from works of duke ellington, particularly the pieces from the new orleans suite.

here's my ongoing complaint. this cd features selections from 3 different suites, 2 of them by ellington, one by stefon harris. why selections, why not an interpretation of an entire suite? i listened to the new orleans suite, i own ellington's suite, and i wanted to hear more of what harris might had done with the piece. and never having heard the other ellington suite i was eager to hear more, as well as seek out ellington's original, which i can do, whereas my desire to hear more of what harris might had done...i don't particularly like samplers any more than i like readers' digest condensed books. sometimes i want all or nothing at all. in this case, however, something is better than nothing

This artist was new to me and I heard track seven on a jazz station. I knew I would purchase the cd from that one track I heard. Stefon really connects melodious with the vibes. I did not regret purchasing this cd at all. Get comfortable, relax, and enjoy! Thank U Stefon and for the homage you pay to Duke Ellington. Hotep!

Young star continues to rise.......2007-01-15

Even though the vibraphone and marimba are established "jazz" instruments there have been relatively few high profile players associated with them. The short list would include Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Gary Burton, Roy Ayers, Steve Nelson, and Bobby Hutcherson.
With six Blue Note albums as a leader to his credit, Albany native Stefon Harris is one of a handful of young vibe players exploring the potential of the instrument while building upon its often underappreciated legacy.
With his most recent release, "African Tarantella....Dances with Duke" Harris re-envisions movements from two suites composed by Duke Ellington. Also included is a disc-closing trio of original compositions from his recently commissioned work entitled "The Gardner Meditations."
With his own compositions in place first, Harris embarked upon selecting the material that would round out the disc. "I picked the Ellington compositions I thought would best align with my overall concept," he notes. "In arranging the Ellington pieces I tried not to stray to far from his intentions; I wanted to make sure that I was juxtaposing my compositional sound with that of Duke's."
Opting for a chamber jazz ensemble, the group is rounded out with piano, bass, drums, clarinet, trombone, flute, viola, and cello, instead of a more traditional big band in an Ellington mold. Thus, much of the stamp that Harris places on selections from Duke's "The New Orleans Suite" and "The Queen's Suite" is to be heard through his use of the group's instrumentation.
Ellington's music is a seemingly effortless amalgam of styles which range from jazz to classical into which he also frequently incorporated touches of blues, gospel, and world music. Tempered with a singularity of vision and style, his canon of more than 3000 compositions staked a claim all its own, no small feat during a time which the great American songbook was being crafted.
"The New Orleans Suite" was recorded by Duke in 1970 and is considered to be one of his late-period masterpieces. Taken as a whole, "Thanks for the Beautiful Land on the Delta," "Portrait of Wellman Braud" and "Bourbon Street Jingling Jollies" could be seen as a microcosm of the Ellington oeuvre. Providing ample inspiration, "Portrait" is emboldened by trombonist Steve Turre's bluesy smears, while "Bourbon Street" features a plaintive theme whose airy gait elegantly glides over a backdrop of flute and strings.
More impressive still is the way that Harris' original tunes, which are broad in scope yet succinctly sculpted, hold their own as they follow the works of a true master. The gentle "Memoirs of a Frozen Summer" is cloaked in a film-noir mystique. "African Tarantella" lopes along on a wave of mellifluous swing while "Dancing Enigma" traverses a variety of colors and moods.
A short un-credited bonus ninth track lurks ninety-seconds after the disc "ends."

Another solid release.......2007-01-09

Stefon Harris's _African Tarantella_ is a good, solid release by the vibist. It's not as accessible as _Evolution_ or as virtuosic as Grand Unification Theory, but it is one of the best interpretations of Duke Ellington's work in recent years. A must-buy for his fans, and a safe buy for all others.
