Album Description

Featuring original music composed by Alberto Iglesias. Adapted from the best-seller John le Carre's romantic thriller, two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz head the cast of "The Constant Gardener." In a remote area of northern Kenya, the dedicated activist Tessa Quayle (Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Her travelling companion, a local doctor, appears to have fled the scene and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Sandy Woodrow (Danny Huston), Sir Bernard Pellegrin (Bill Nighy), and other member of the British High Commission assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered colleague Justin Quayle (Fiennes) will leave the matter to their discretion. They could not be more wrong... Featuring music performed by acclaimed Kenyan percussionist and Real World recording artist Ayub Ogada, Alberto Iglesias' ("La Mala Educacion," "The Dancer Upstairs," "Todo Sobre Mi Madre") lush score evokes the film's compelling African and European landscapes.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Score.......2007-04-24

For someone like me who purchases soundtracks for the score to use for dance & skating programs, this soundtrack definitely made it into my collection. My only minus to the soundtrack is that there isn't much variety among the many tracks. But I am still able to work around it.

3 out of 5 stars Only track 13.......2007-03-31

In my opinion, only track 13 is worthy of buy this CD. Track 13 is beautiful, other than that extremely depressing music...... Once again track 13 is the most beautiful adn touching music that I have ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-02-12

My CD was delivered in a very timely manner and the product was in great shape upon arrival.

4 out of 5 stars A nice reminder of a very moving movie.......2007-01-12

Favorite songs are the ones by Ayub Ogada. I think it's wonderful that we found his music through this film.

3 out of 5 stars it captures the spirit of the movie.......2006-11-10

I like this soundtrack because it reminds me of the movie, which I loved. I am not sure I would appreciate it much if I hadn't seen the movie and didn't have pictures in my mind for each theme. It is redolent of Africa though and that in itself is satisfying.

Buy The Import "See For Miles Records" It is very hard to find. But it has the extended version of "Birth Of The Beat" Between my dad and my brother and myself we must have worn out 8 LPs. I have bought 3 CDs of the import. I have two That I shared with my dad before he passed away and gave my Brother one.

4 out of 5 stars Good percussion work.......2007-03-26

I've been looking for these two (combined on the CD) albums for a long time. I really enjoyed them.

5 out of 5 stars Let There be Drums.......2005-09-14

I purchased this CD for my nephew who's been playing the drums for about a year. He never heard of Sandy Nelson before...but listened to the CD over a dozen times the day he received it. He's thanked me over and over again for such a great, drum playing collection of music.

4 out of 5 stars Sandy Nelson.......2005-09-07

Sandy Nelson's Let There Be Drums and Drums Are My Beat, brought back great memories of the 60's. Anyone who loves the old rock and roll, will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Sandy Nelson.......2004-01-03

Out of all of Sandy's recordings this album captures his most unique style. Teen beat 65 is proof of Sandy's way of making drums seem to come to life.
He is one of the very few drummers who has made such a personal impact on so many through out the years.
He changed the drumming world.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

The world can never have enough Buddy Holly songs. And as Holly hasn't been around since 1959, the music of Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys performs a public service, as Big Sandy not only channels the pure sincerity of Holly's tenor and the sweet innocence of that musical era, but writes songs such as "Love That Man" and "The Ones You Say You Love" that sound as fresh now as Holly's forever will. Yet Big Sandy and the Boys don't confine themselves to a single genre (neither, for that matter, did Holly and the Crickets), as the roadhouse twang of "The Great State of Misery," the horn-laden, Stax/Volt R&B of "Slipping Away," and the Western swing of "Yes (I Feel Sorry for You)" all combine for the platter party conjured by "The Power of the 45," which opens and closes the album. "Drop the needle in the groove and start to move," the song implores, and it's hard to resist the invitation. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A sure fire solid sender..........2007-01-24

Having known Robert (Robert Williams, aka Big Sandy) for seemingly decades now, following and supporting them on tours since his days with the Fly Rite TRIO and back in the day when even Will B. and the legendary, untouchable T.K. Smith was playing guitar....it's good to see the boys still doing what they have always done. Sure there have been some personnel changes along the way, but Big Sandy has always been the pinnacle of this music, only rivaled by such cats as Dave and Deke when they were still together (Deke has gone on solo now - Dave too, but to a lesser extent), or possibly the Lucky Stars and the Horton Brothers. Still, Big Sandy and gang keep on keepin' on.

This latest is no exception. If you know this scene, then I really need to explain it or describe much further. But it is amazing, as usual. Get this latest one as soon as you can, and you won't regret it. Sounds of Speedy West, Jimmy Bryant, Bob Wills and such will come flooding from your hi-fi with a "modern" touch. You can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-01-10

This is a real fun album to listen to. It's up-beat and catchy.

4 out of 5 stars Keep on Boppin'.......2006-11-04

If you are unfamiliar with Big Sandy, this is as good an album to begin with as any, solid tracks ready to provide the beat for your next house dance party. Those well versed in Big Sandy's medium will find no surprises here-another solid effort in the west coast rockabilly/country sounds for which he is known.

4 out of 5 stars Turntable Magic.......2006-07-26

So, all right it's a c-d, but "Turntable Matinee" reminds those of us old enough to remember what it was like to set the needle in the groove and hear something special and not bat an eye at an occasional crackle or pop. This album is fantastic. Most are comparing it to Buddy Holly & the Crickets. There's some truth to that, but I'm hearing some Nick Lowe & Rockpile in there too. This album has a great "live" feel to it. I'm already looking to see what club they'll be coming to in my area.

5 out of 5 stars A New Release from Big Sandy!!!.......2006-07-15

wow, sandy is back with a big time cd!! here's the deal

1. This album from the start is a lot faster than some of the other albums. Very energetic and very danceable.

2. of course, everyone is in top form musically.

3. another perfect mix of swing, rockabilly, some jump....

4. a fun, well produced, quickstep of an album. pick it up!!

5 out of 5 stars Julie Andrews Youthful Rendering of "The Boy Friend".......2006-03-15

This is a very zesty, stylized production of the original import from England with a very young and fresh voiced Julie Andrews. Ms. Andrews, in her debut to Broadway, leads the way in this marvelously entertaining and delightfully campy "The Boy Friend". All the cast members join in with great infectious and sincer enthusiasm to insure that those of us "in the colonies" get two shot gun barrells full of satyrical musical comedy to which the British reign supreme. Unfortunately, this was made before DVDs were born, but one can almost clearly visualize the cast in their stylized costumes and flapper era postures belting out the tuneful score that will sweep you off of your feet. What a joy!!! The sound is suprisingly very good, so purchase and play this CD, put your feet up and ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Julie Andrews Makes IT.......2005-12-23

I just saw the Julie Andrews Production of The Boy Friend and she did a marvelous job. Polly was good but does not compare to Julie as Polly Brown. This CD is great with Julie in it. If she were not in it, it would have flopped.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......2005-09-25

We are looking at putting on The Boyfriend and this version is great musically, very accessible for young people. Bright and bubbly.

5 out of 5 stars The Boyfriend.......2005-08-27

If you love Julie Andrews and miss her wonderful voice, you will want this CD. This was the show that launched her career.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fun.......2005-07-31

This album is an accurate portrayal of the original Broadway experience. The music is light and fanciful and the songs fun and tuneful. I saw the show with Julie Andrews with my parents in 1954 and loved it. I was impressed with how well she can whistle! I just saw the show again last week at Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut where Julie Andrews is directing a new version that will be on tour, and was pleased to see that she kept the songs and dances the way they were done when the show was first presented. By the way, the rest of the original cast was also very talented, both singing and dancing, but it's difficult to appreciate them as much as they deserve just by listening to the CD.

Sandy Denny was perhaps was the greatest singer to come out of the British folk-rock movement of the 1960s. No More Sad Refrains is a two-CD collection of songs from her four solo albums as well as a selection from her work with Fairport Convention and the short-lived band Fotheringay. While Denny was alive critics praised her for her exquisite voice while overlooking her songwriting, which was equal to that of her fellow Fairporter, Richard Thompson. "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" her most popular song is here, along with lesser known but still worthy compositions such as "The Pond and the Stream," "Like an Old Fashioned Waltz," and "I'm a Dreamer." One unexpected treat is the duet with Linda Peters, who later married Richard Thompson, on the Everly Brothers classic "When Will I Be Loved." The music of Sandy Denny is probably better known and more respected in 2000 than it was when she died of a brain hemorrhage caused by a fall in 1978. Like the music of Nick Drake, another great British singer-songwriter who died too young, these songs have a melancholy air that is only deepened by the knowledge of her early death. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars A great voice.......2006-07-17

Sandy Denny, one of the greatest voices in music. A collection of her songs spanning a long, but sadly a shortened career.

5 out of 5 stars Mournful, memorable melodies........2006-06-12

This is a well thought out and well produced compilation that gives a good overview of Sandy's work. The insert notes, by her biographer Clinton Heylin, are very good, except that they inexplicably omit any mention of The Bunch - Rock On, and Pass of Arms, albums from which 4 of the tracks are taken. Pass of Arms in particular contributes the 2 most musically interesting arrangements here, so it is odd that Heylin ignores them.

The first 2 tracks, Fotheringay and Who Knows Where the Time Goes? are her best known, and deservedly so. It has to be said that her writing acquired a certain sameness, and her best later vocals are treatments of traditional songs, like Banks of the Nile. I would also add that the Judi Collins cover of Who Knows Where the Time Goes? is superior to Sandy's own version, in my opinion. Fotheringay, by the way, was the name of the English castle where Mary, queen of Scots was imprisoned.

Sandy was the archetypal late-sixties Folkie, complete with mini skirt, long flowing hair, guitar and bundle of ballads. She was sixties dolly-bird on the way to becoming seventies hippie; sixties folk-revivalist on the way to becoming seventies folk-rocker. Hers was a sweet, melodic voice that she sensibly kept within its range, and which had a persistent, mournful coloring, which she unfailingly indulged. Her lyrics are often mysterious (even to her) and always thoughtful. She and the smoke-filled Folk den were made for each other.

She died aged 31, shortly after declaring at a Royal Albert Hall concert that she would sing 'no more sad refrains', which became the title of the last track on her last album. If she seriously intended to renounce sad songs and take her writing to new places, it could have led to something great. Sadly, we'll never know.

2 out of 5 stars great voice, mediocre songwriter .......2005-02-05

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but this collection only reminds why I soured on Sandy Denny in the first place. Some of the early material is terrific; besides her justly-praised vocal talents, the earlier songcraft is good and sometimes terrific. But a dreary sameness overtakes much of these sides; Denny was one of many artists over the past four decades whose songwriting seems to have mainly consisted of setting up a chord progression, then intuitively establishing predictable melody lines around it in "connect-the-dots" fashion.

The result is that few of these tracks are especially memorable. One of the songs included here, the early Fairport/Richard Thompson gem, "Crazy Man Michael," provides an exception that proves the rule: with a gorgeous melody that comfortably inhabits but also transcends its chordal foundations, this tracks blows most of the other tracks on this compilation out of the water. Yes, she remained a fine singer, and much here is pleasant enough in an innocuous way. But life is too short to spend much time with most of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars Her legacy lives on.......2004-11-17

Sandy-we hardly knew thee...
Theres a gaping hole in the music universe now that Sandy has moved on. Sandy synthesized traditional English folk music with popular music and made it her own.
Timelessly appealing and ever fresh, she was a trailblazer who made this genre of music accessible to new fans thoughout the 60's and 70's.
If you like Steeleye Span, Pentangle, Renaissance and Jethro Tull, you will love Sandy. Folk music and countless others, owe her a debt that can never be paid.
Do yourself a favor and buy this testament to her talent.

5 out of 5 stars Achingly beautiful!.......2004-07-03

Sandy could turn any song into a sad song and wring tears from every note. This anthology is proof of that. Her album "Like an Old Fashioned Waltz," (of which five out of nine tunes appear here) remains my all-time favorite. There is just something about the catch in her voice that sends shivers down my spine. Songs like "Solo," "No End," "I'm a Dreamer," and "No More Sad Refrains," once heard, will stick in your memory forever. I can't think of a more expressive singer from the 60's or 70's (aside from Janis Joplin, who Sandy has no vocal resemblance to whatsoever).

The first disk provides a good survey of her early work with Fairport Convention and assorted bands. As great as these tunes are, they are only appetizers for the main course served up on disk two, when Sandy, emerges as an amazing solo artist in her own right. From her folk roots, she manages to incorporate rock, jazz, classical, and 30's dance hall music into her powerful compositions. My only beef with this collection is that it doesn't include "At the End of the Day" and one of her classic throwbacks ("Whispering Grass" or "Until the Real Thing Comes Along"). Otherwise, it's nearly perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Fairport Convention.......2007-05-13

I've only recently re-discovered Fairport Convention and Pentangle, both distant, vague memories from my youth. I started collecting re-released albums on CD of both groups, in chronological order. I rank both groups now among my favorites and regret the many years lost that I didn't enjoy them both. But as these two groups seem to me so coincidentally similar, including the similarity that each group's female lead vocalist seems to be the gem of the group, I also notice (Is it only me?) that these women, gifted singers that they are (were), need direction, and left on their own come up short on arrangements. They seem to need the group, and on their own they make poor choices in material. I've come away from this Sandy Denny (formerly of Fairport Convention) album with the telltale bad impression that I can't recall anything she sang -- neither a title or a tune. Did fame go to her head and she thought that she could make it on her own? Did her talent as a singer exceed her judgment of material and arrangements?

5 out of 5 stars Listen, Listen.......2006-03-08

Sandy Denny's second solo album represents her best work. While there were other terrific albums in her brief life, this captures the magic of her songwriting and singing. The remastered CD from Island sounds terrific. Sound quality is exceptional crisp with nice detail and depth. The original artwork has been redesigned for the CD booklet with liner notes by David Suff.

I was one of those people who discover Sandy via Led Zepplin's "Zo-So" (or "Led Zepplin IV")with her work on "The Battle of Evermore". Her rich, powerful voice took possession of the song from Robert Plant immediately and that, by itself, was quite an accomplishment. I finally replaced the old vinyl version of this album with the CD once it was remastered with bonus tracks and am glad that I made the transition.

This edition features five bonus cuts. The first two are from the soundtrack to "Pass of Arms", a demo, "Listen, Listen" with the vocals recorded in French and a live track of a recording of "It'll Take a Long Time" recorded with Fairport Convention. The only thing missing that might have made this set better is a collection of these tracks aside from "It'll Take a Long Time" performed live.

The sad part is that the cult of Sandy remains that--a cult of people who love and are devoted to her music. Sadly, in our homogenized world of radio pap Sandy's music is nowhere to be found. It would enrich radio and there's certainly a place for her work it's just that there are so many people that have never heard of her that her work falls between the cracks. Heck, I've even heard Nick Drake's stuff played as muzak. Never Sandy's music. Maybe that's a good thing though because the music hasn't been cheapened but it would be nice if her resonate voice and songwriting could find a larger audience because she deserved so much more.

5 out of 5 stars The music lasted so much longer than Sandy did.......2005-08-07

I too bought this album in 1972, not knowing anything about Sandy Denny other than a positive review of the album from Rolling Stone. Played the first side regularly for 30 years. It was only when I bought this CD recently and really delved into the entire work (and extra tracks) that I could see how ahead of her time Sandy was. [Somewhere in the second chorus of "Listen Listen" you'll hear what I've always thought was Chrissie Hynde's signature ululation -- nope, she stole it from Sandy.] The writing on the best songs is so spare and engages the listener's intellect (what a concept!), and the musicianship still sounds fresh, a third of a century on. This is a voice, both in her writing and singing, that was only just starting to realize its potential, and anyone who values truly beautiful, conservatively adorned music will be rewarded in exploring Sandy Denny. Would that she were still alive!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2005-08-01

As a big fan of Fairport Convention and Sandy's own first album, I bought "Sandy" back in 1972. I must admit that it took me quite some time to get used to some of these "new" songs. "For Nobody to Hear" did not sound like anything she'd done before - almost like a "Band" (Cahoots) arrangement. Other tracks like "The Lady" and "The Music Weaver" sounded dark and pretty difficult to get into.

Fortunately there were immediate "hits" like the majestic "It'll Take a Long Time" , Tomorrow is a Long Time" and "Listen, Listen" - great production.

Now I have learned to acppreciate the album as a whole, but still my favourites are the more simple folkish tunes "Sweet Rosemary", "Bushes and Briars" and "It Suits Me Well".

Of the five bonus-tracks the Fairport version of "It'll Take a Long Time" stands out!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a great version of this one.......2005-07-10

Can't add too much to the other review. The sound quality of this
rerelease is by far the best. Good & interesting selection of bonus
tracks as well, particularly "It'll Take a Long, Long Time" w. Fairport, which I like even more than her solo one on SANDY album. For those who like a more 'folk rock' side of Sandy, this album is definitely one
to pick up-- though her other solos, if more pop, are very interesting
too I think. (Check out the even better rerelease of LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ in this regard).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of this artist's best.......2007-02-11

Back when music came on vinyl albums with "sides" that you turned over to play, "Side Two" of this album got a workout on my turntable. It contains some of Sandy Denny's finest songs and finest singing, with two particular standouts, "Next Time Around" and the title song. On both, the qualities that those know and love in Denny come to the fore immediately---an earthy grit to her voice that is lovely rather than coarse, songs that defy any particular time and era to connect with the listener, combined with arrangements that enhance both these other traits. They're beautiful. The rest of the album is only slightly less arresting than those two songs, but "slightly" is the important word here. With the exception of a rather rote version of Bob Dylan's "Down In The Flood," Denny is in top-form throughout, ably assisted by long-time cohorts including Richard Thompson, Gerry Conway and her former husband Trevor Lucas.

Sandy Denny left this world far too soon, but the music she made still stands up today, for all seasons. Get this CD and listen....you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Sandy's Best.......2006-07-10

I read a magazine review calling this recording an "uneven masterpiece." It IS a masterpiece, but it is not uneven. Every song on it is strong. Several are now classic. Sandy's voice was in its prime at this time. The newly-remastered CD version is an absolute delight, with an alternate take of "Next Time Around" and a few added tracks. The voice and music of Sandy Denny will live on forever and her first solo album, "The North Star Grassman and the Riverns," is her best.

4 out of 5 stars Denny's First Solo Album!.......2005-08-07

Sandy Denny's first solo album was recorded shortly after she had disbanded her group Fotheringay in late 1970. All Fotheringay members were present at the recordings of Sandy's album, so it's no surprise that quite many songs sound like Fotheringay. The opening song "Late November" was actually intended for a second Fotheringay album, that was never finished. Fotheringay did record the song and that version is included among the bonus-tracks. Though only one song , the great "Blackwaterside", is a traditional folk-song, there is a very folkish feel to many of Sandy's own songs. Especially on "John the Gun" and the title track.

Other songs are quite complicated, both musically and lyrically ( her lyrics at times are pretty cryptic ). "Next Time Around", "The Optimist" and "Wretched Wilbur" may be the easiest songs to get into, but eventually they are bound to grow on you.

Two tracks "Down in the Flood" and "Let's Jump the Broomstick" ( and 2 more among the bonus-tracks ) are rockers a little in the same vein as the "Bunch" project recorded in early 1972 with most of the same people, who are backing Sandy on this album. Among them the outstanding guitarist and song-writer Richard Thompson.

Though the album may sound slightly more dated than her other solo-albums, it's still a great album.

My favourites are "Blackwaterside", "Wretched Wilbur", "Crazy Lady Blues" and both versions of "Late November"

5 out of 5 stars Sandy Stewart - great singer you never heard of!.......2007-07-03

excellent CD.. Sandy takes me back to those smoky night club singers..
what a treat.. she sings with such heart and pain and fun.. she is so sincere.. and son Bill Charlap.... a master at the piano..
what a dynamic duo! so glad i heard the interview on NPR.. I knew I had to own this CD.. I am wearing it out..

4 out of 5 stars Quality performances but constantly mellow.......2006-08-20

Although Bill Charlap and Sandy Stewart are consummate performers, I must agree with the review of Sharlan Douglas. Both mother and son compliment their artistry so skillfully but the tempo of each selection is ultimately and regretfully the same throughtout the entire album. Neither the superbly intimate phrasing of Sandy Stewart nor the tenderly responsive accompaniment of Bill Charlap sustained the interest of this listener. However, when my choice is limited to a few numbers, the combined talents of both vocalist and pianist are intoxicating as one's stimulating indulgence of a fine and delicate wine.

3 out of 5 stars Ultimately boring.......2006-01-14

I like Sandy Stewart's voice and phrasing -- she tells a good song story. Son Bill Charlap's accompaniment is delicate and spare. But every song has the same, slow tempo, the same vocal level and the same accompaniment. There's nothing uptempo, no crescendos, no drama.

4 out of 5 stars Copy Control, what a sound spoiler!.......2006-01-08

If it wasn't for the sound quality damaged by the copy control ("CC"), this would have been a truly wonderful recording of Bill Charlap accompanying his own mother, who gets really into singing love songs in front of her own beloved son.
Bill's recordings on Blue Note ("BN") label have been disappointing as compared to his much superior works with Venus Records in Japan, and this CD was going to be an exception. Well, almost. It's strange why his performances fluctuate between the two labels, even though he always record in his home town NYC.
The CC technology masks the transparency and spoils the listening pleasure, especially when listened on a higher-end audio system. I wish BN not only abandons the CC but also issue their latest recordings in CD/SACD hybrid format, provided that BN would never repeat what they did for Nora Jones' Come Away With Me SACD.
