4 out of 5 stars The band that backed up "The Maestro".......2006-06-01

Though he was not the first artist to mix classical strings with popular beats and rhythms, Barry White's unique blending of the two made him a standout on the musical scene of the mid-70's through the early 80's. This compilation represents the best of the orchestra that provided the background to many of his hit singles, as well as charttopping tracks released as solo performances from the group.

Most "best of" collections leave out some fan favorites. This one is no different, for most of the cuts are culled from the ensemble's 70's releases, starting with "Rhapsody in White" (1974) and ending with 1979's "Super Movie Themes, Just a Little Bit Different". Although the group would release four more albums in the 80's, none of those albums are represented here; thus, a more inclusive offering may be in the future.

This reviewer would've preferred that, along with the "Theme from 'King Kong'", the orchestra's version of "As Time Goes By," the group's killer reworking of Isaac Hayes's "Theme from 'Shaft'" had been included.

However, that is crying over spilled milk and this album is still a fine introduction to the group that helped to supply the "silky soul" to the singer with the "bedroom delivery."

3 out of 5 stars Is "Loves Theme" from a 1974 movie??.......2005-08-11

I am trying to find out if the track "Loves Theme" comes from a movie in the same year (Feb.1974) that this single reached No.10 on the British Pop Charts, and stayed for 3 weeks.
I really enjoy the arrangement of this melody which is my favourite disco tune of that era, next to the "Saturday Night Fever"album.

1 out of 5 stars Great Music BUT.........................................2004-02-05

The single star isn't for the Music on this CD which is fantastic. The single star is for this reason - How can you have a 'best of' without the group's finest track? The tracks on this CD are very good but for whatever reason 'Strange Games And Things', the track in question isn't on it. Maybe it was due to licensing problems but surely some deal could have been done?
As it stands they were in the ridiculous situation of putting out a 'best of' compilation without their best track! The mind boggles.

5 out of 5 stars some of the best music I ever heard.......2003-01-10

This here is some of the music produced by barry white who took r&b to new levels with the styles he conducted with this tight orchestra here and plus these songs have been sampled numerous times over the past decade still these are classical and masterpieces if you are into this stuff this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars The "Bach" of Soul Romance -- Mr. Barry White.......2002-11-06

INCREDIBLE CD! This CD is so cool that I had to get two copies. Not one song is a sleeper. In fact, Mr. Barry White's orchestration will lift you into a ballroom with tails and top hat if you may. He is so talented, and short of recognition (unfortunately). This CD is a perfect catch to romance and pleasure. Don't miss it. LAST NOTE..WE ALL WISH MR. BARRY WHITE A SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY. MR. WHITE, YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS. 11.4.02 **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars "Back in the day music".......2005-10-24

If you need a moment to remember the slower times, a time when love songs held a hint of mystery and kept you coming back for more. If you're looking to put your feet up and just relax into some great memories or create new ones. This CD will definitely do it all for you, especially if you are a fan of Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra. What a masterful mix of sounds.

If you're trying to put a little fire in your relationship and need to set a mood with good music, here's the music to play.

5 out of 5 stars SHOULD HAVE MADE IT TO THE TOP.......2005-07-31

IT'S A SHAME THAT THIS GIRL GROUP NEVER RECEIVED THE RECOGNITION THEY VERY WELL DESERVED AND THAT THEY NEVER MADE IT TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS.
THESE THREE WOMEN ARE GLAMOROUS, STUNNING, AND HAVE THE VOICES AND TALENT THAT COULD KNOCK A SKYSCRAPER DOWN. THIS CD IS AN AWESOME ONE AND ALL THE TRACKS ARE GOOD FROM START TO END. IN MY OPINION, IT'S WORTH OWNING. MY PERSONAL FAVORITE TRACK IS NUMBER 3. I CAN HEAR IT OVER AND OVER AND NEVER GET TIRED OF IT. I MAKE A POINT TO LISTEN TO IT EVERYDAY.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars are not enough..........2005-07-29

...to rate this album, in which Barry's music intelligence meets 3 superb female voices! Songs like 'Walking in the rain' still make me thrill! A must-have collection containing all their hits!

5 out of 5 stars The Supremes of the 70's!!.......2005-06-22

The first minute and five seconds of the opening cut, "Under The Influence of Love" sound like a great lost Blaxploitation soundtrack cut. It's all high hat cymbals and wah-wah guitar and swelling strings. Then, on come three female singers with huge afros and tight, perfect harmony, sounding like a more soulful version of The Supremes. Brilliant, luscious vocals and a girl group groove straight out of Phil Spector guides you to heaven on "It May Be Winter Outside, But In My Heart It's Spring". Barry White wrote or co-wrote and produced everything on here and even married one of the girls(Glodean). His influence is writ large upon the production, but the girls have their own musical persona. "I Belong To You" was their big R&B number one and "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love" is a gorgeous rewrite of The Ronettes "Walking In The Rain", complete with rain effects and a phone call from Barry in full basso profundo lover man mode. This is sweet, sensual music that sounds better than ever and there are 17 very strong hits on here.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Girl Group of The 70s .......2004-12-29

Of all the 70s great girl groups around at the time (First Choice, Three Degrees, Sister Sledge) this one is my favorite. I could listen to "Under The Influence Of...Love Unlimited" all day. Which brings up a point, why is it out of print? Anyway, powerful vocals by Glodean and the Girls...

The mood on 1974's Rhapsody in White, reissued as part of Mercury's Funk Essentials series, is just what you'd expect. Its eight cuts alternate between honeymoon-suite stuff and what sounds like leftover score from Starsky and Hutch--except, of course, for "Love's Theme," the number one pop hit that became a favorite of figure skaters everywhere. Barry White's album in all but name only, Rhapsody finds him taking up the primest real estate on the front cover, writing all but one of these instrumentals, coarranging (with Gene Page), conducting, and providing a handful of his trademark seduction raps. This is romance: "You know what I feel like doin' to you right now?" --Rickey Wright

What woman doesn't love this music. I've had my vinyl album since it came out but decided to replace it with a CD. It's old and mostly instrumental but still good. "Barry's Theme" is my favorite. Feeling nostalgic? Like Barry White? You'll enjoy the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Masterpiece.......2004-09-26

Most probably this is the best album ever recorder from Barry White. I do not have enough words to describe the magnitud of the talent of the "Maestro" Barry White to produce and record the music this album contain. Mr. White allow you to enjoy his music with out any vocal ingredient in order you can truly appreciate his genius. I had the opportunity to get this CD recently but I have been looking to get it for many years. I even bought the LP with the same tile and presentation 5 years ago at Sou Paulo Brasil. Now finally it is here for everybody to enjoy it. If you like soul Music and Barry White music this is truly en esencial CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Maestro conducts a classic.......2004-01-19

If you are a fan of Barry White and his sound you should love this album. Released in 1973 after The Maestro had hit big with his first two albums 'I've Got So Much To Give' and 'Stone Gon', this was an opportunity for him to flex his orchestral talents exclusively to the public, without any vocal distractions.

All of The Maestros albums in his 70s prime were awesome showcases of musical talent, thanks in part to the wonderful ways in which he manipulated the orchestral groove for his songs. This album follows suit and is a beautiful collection of well arranged instrumentals, with Barry occasionally kicking game at the beginning of some tracks. The classic 'Loves Theme' is present, however the Wall Of Sound created throughout this album is just as impressive.

Not an essential, however a great record and a nice companion to the Barry White solo albums released in the 70s. Particularly so for those fiending for some more classic Barry White flava.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great.......2005-08-02

As is typical with these compilation cds, one recieves the shorter version of most songs when it is the unedited versions that became the hits;ergo, we "Can't Get Enough".

5 out of 5 stars One of the Defining Sounds of the 70s.......2002-04-07

This economical CD contains 1 of the definative R&B 70's tunes in "Cant Get Enough of Your Love" and perhaps the best disco song ever written in "Love's Theme". It also contains 2 excellent cover versions of "Just the Way You Are" and "Standing In the Shadows of Love". White was a triple threat - writer, singer and arranger/producer and shows off his talents here.
Highly recommended!

Barry's music make's me want to dance, 30 year ago I watched him and love unlimited Live at Madison Square Garden and the magic is still there. His music is about Love and Feeling glad to be alive. Barry and Love Unlimited you Rule!

5 out of 5 stars I Finally Know.......2000-05-24

Since the early 70's, I remember Love's Theme but did not know the composer or the even the orchestration. Radio stations often use it as bumper music but rarely announce the title. Love's Theme was used as an intro to TV golf tournaments, but I still did not know title or composer. Finally last week a local talk show host used it as background in a discussion of Barry White. Bingo. I am no longer driven crazy not knowing where to find the music. I've listened to the entire CD compilation. Barry White truly is a musical genious. Amazon.com saved me a lot of time looking for Back to Back.

4 out of 5 stars This is a cool band.......2004-04-21

Maybe there can be a band who appeals to rockers and art students? Some people haven't given up on hair metal either. Since Glass Candy have loss their drummer, now they seem like an Apollonian version of The Kills. Maybe the heroin use does help in this case. When you first listen to this record, you are surprised and shocked by each song. "Crystal Migraine" sounds like one of the best songs ever. You are surprised that they would cover a song by The Screamers. At the same time it's like these guys grew up with Poison. As a live group, they are static. There's no interaction. They move more on the album cover than they do in person. They are supposed to be a glam band, but it's just that lead singer, Ida No, has a lot of clothes. I wouldn't call Moloko a glam band because the lead singer wears a lot of costumes. The musical member, Johnny Jewel, does a good impression of Keith Richards. With all that against then, and the band always being in a flux, Glass Candy seem really good.

    4 out of 5 stars LoveLoveLove.......2003-11-01

Out of sheer curiosity, I listened to the album Love, Love, Love by Glass Candy & the Shattered Theatre hoping that it would sound every bit as nostalgic as the album cover suggests. One only needs to see the cover once to realize that this is something borrowed straight out of the 1982 music vaults. To boot, it looks exactly like MTV's first year on air; which were "the days" in my opinion. Anyway, after doing a little research on the Internet to see what these guys were all about, I felt compelled to expand my knowledge of the band. Contrary to my desire, I found that there really isn't much information available on the band. Maybe it's because they are still fairly unrecognized to the music scene. Hopefully this is something that will change as time progresses.

It's highly apparent what has been the main influence for Glass Candy. After finding several pictures of the band online, I realized that lead singer, Ida No, has virtually nailed the 80's new wave look. She's been referred to as a cross between Ziggy Stardust and Alan Vega. The music itself has even been tagged as "death disco." It may also be noted that Ida, along with guitarist, John David V, may unwillingly bring the mullet back if they're not careful.

Love, Love, Love is not a very long album. A few of the songs are from previous 7-inch releases that have been selected to surface here. I should also note that these 7-inch releases should be gobbled up quickly, as they may become very nice collectibles in the future. "Crystal Migraine" begins with hammering punk-like bass and guitar riffs over Ida's seamlessly aggressive vocals. "Hurt" shows the caustic side of No's lyrics. She sings, "I wanna hurt you/I wanna hurt me." I firmly believe she could do it, too. If her ability to hurt someone is even remotely as strong as her lungs, I have a feeling someone could be in for a good ass-whoopin'.

The title track, "Love, Love, Love," is a track that imparts a touch of new wave dance with its upbeat drums and swaying effects. Anyone want to do the white-man's overbite? No? Ok. The title of the last song, "Empty V," even salutes MTV with play on words. Contrary to the aggressive tone of Love, Love, Love, this song seems to change pace for what is the most "user-friendly" track offered. Overall, though, the pace of the album is quite solid. Each song remains true to the agenda the band is trying to adhere to. Love, Love, Love is punk rock all the way. It just seems to fall a little short of what could be an incredible rendition of 80's revival. I should contradict myself and say that it's a hell of a start.

So, although there is truly nothing revolutionary about Love, Love, Love, I'm hoping the idea of Glass Candy's music will instill a desire for other bands to follow with the 80's revival. I, for one, have been waiting for it to happen for quite some time. I want to put my collars up again on my shirts and wear Swatches. Not really, but you get the idea I'm going for. If you're from that era, and you miss those days, Glass Candy & the Shattered Theatre may be something that will interest you. I personally hope I get to see them live at some point. I can only image what it would be like to see them in a small club environment. Maybe after spreading the word about their music, they'll begin to gain enough recognition to make this happen.

    4 out of 5 stars Death DisK-(o).......2003-04-05

Love Love Loveý is addictive and proves Glass Candyýs potential. The album reminds me of the Siouxsie and the Banshees ýScreamý album. Abstract unknown meanings almost stream of conscious lyrics along with steady driving beat melodic atmospheres. I think I heard some Joy Division in the drums at one point. They have a great sense of style but you canýt mitigate this band to being just fashionable, they have a very real presence. Everybody always says Ida No is so good looking, but Iým sure she would say so ... what, the band is definitely more than looks. The music sends you out in space, itýs a driving trance. The open guitar plucking in the first song is so simple its genius, open space and ambiguous areas, very raw. you can see the influences, but Its very honest to me, not a copy. Glass Candy is has everything I love about surrealist films: sex, dream like imagery, violence, and subconscious delusions, . ýDeath Discoý is an appropriate name and itýs a bright splinter in the music shake-up these days.

4 out of 5 stars Glam induced disco punk.......2003-03-05

Ida No is sexy. That isn't the only thing Glass Candy have going for them but it is what the band is centered around. She has a sexy shrill voice and a glam rock/ new wave style that will get her compared to Debbie Harry from BLONDIE. She writes interesting lyrics and has a band featuring two other members guitarist Johnny Jewel and drummer Ginger Peach. Together they play "death disco" a phrase coined by the band themselves. I am sure everyone will notice the heavy BOWIE influence. That is a really easy comparison.
This is a must for fans of the rapture and bands of that dance punk genre.
So far they are impressive enough to get in Jane magazine.
the title track is my favorite so far.
    great design too.

These girls are simply fantastic and I have no words to rate the beautiful songs they sing here. So good it was issued on CD!

5 out of 5 stars Good album! Bad title!.......2004-01-24

Although the title is rather degrading to the trio (and women, as a whole), this 1974 release from Barry White's Love Unlimited features three of "The Maestro's" most seductive creations: "Share a Little Love in Your Heart," "I Belong to You", and "Love's Theme" (the hit instrumental with lyrics).

Each song is sultry, provocative, and exudes LOVE, the trademark of the late Mr. White.
