Beyond Words (Au-Dela Des Mots)

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Most Americans, even those of Irish or Scottish descent, are unaware that the Celtic world actually consists of six nations: Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany (Bretagne in French, Briezh in Breton) in western France. Brittany's ancient folkways were nearly extinct when Jord Cochevelou reconstructed a Breton harp from a wire-strung Irish prototype. His son, Alan Stivell (his stage name is the Breton word for fountain), became a worldwide sensation with Renaissance de la Harpe Celtique in 1972. The talented multi-instrumentalist likes to experiment. His albums have incorporated disparate influences, including African pop and rap, with varying success. But this set is diffused and filmy, pure Celtic Twilight. The harper strums along with the wind and the waves, much as he did 30 years ago. The tunes are pretty and relaxing; it's just that Stivell is capable of so much more. --Christina Roden

Product Description
50 years ago, Alan Stivell brought the long forgotten Celtic Harp back into use, beginning a career that would rouse worldwide interest in Celtic Music. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the modern Celtic Harp, Stivell has released a mesmerizing new instrumental album, "Beyond Words." The album focuses on Stivell’s various harps: some that mirror the ancient versions of the instrument, others that bear elements of the modern electric guitar. With its ancient melodies, Celtic modal structures, and serene soundscapes, "Beyond Words" is a masterwork of a world music legend.

Vocalist Bobby McFerrin, best known for his pop hit, "Don't Worry, Be Happy," is a talented vocalist and all-around musician. This recording is a true reflection of his genius, and it takes jazz-fusion to another level. Joining McFerrin is the great pianist Chick Corea, with Gil Goldstein on accordion, Cameroonian bassist Richard Bona, Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista, and drummer Omar Hakim. Their music is a 21st-century blend of Return to Forever and Weather Report. McFerrin's superhuman vocalese investigates and invigorates a number of musical genres. Corea's spellbinding piano motifs grace the calypso-like "Invocation." McFerrin and Corea turn in a beautiful duet version of the pianist's waltzing jazz standard, "Windows." "A Silk Road" and "Desert Field" are laced with Afro-Eurasian and Arabic colors. Bona's Jaco Pastorius-influenced bass lines anchor the hip-hop oriented "Taylor Made," named for McFerrin's son, whose human beat-box vocals pepper the track. Bobby McFerrin's voice sings, scats, and constructs a musical language that's understood by everyone. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Album Description

McFerrin's, Beyond Words, is his 12th full-length release and his first on Blue Note Records since 1992's Grammy Award-winning album Play. Like that earlier record, Beyond Words reunites McFerrin with pianist Chick Corea, and is full of the quicksilver, improvisatory flights of musical fancy that have characterized McFerrin's extraordinary career.

Bobby McFerrin: Vocals, Keyboards
Chick Corea: Piano & Keyboards, Gil Goldstein: Accordian & Fender Rhodes, Keith Underwood: Flutes, Taylor: McFerrin: Beatbox, Richard Bona: Bass, Cyro Baptista: Percussion, Omar Hakim: Drums

once, at a concert a woman asked bobby to sing " don't worry, be happy," bobby replied. " lady, i'm an artist..." this record is proof of his talent and mastery of the voice as a musical instrument...the songs are wordless, but you don't miss the words because the sounds he makes have a language all its own and the supporting cast compliments him brilliantly. there is a lot to love about this cd....

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Words.......2005-09-11

Beyond Words, is a well created and good-sounding CD. The vocals are not words, which I did not know when I bought the CD. Nonetheless, the CD is like nothing I have ever heard and has a lot of soul. It took me a little while to get into, as some CDs do, but it was definitely a good buy. Addressing the song selection, well, after about a good half hour you get sick of them, they get rather repetitious. Bobby McFerrin undoubtedly is a skilled musician, his vocal range is extraodinary and his jazz singing, (check out him with Chick Corea) is well unbelievably amazingly spectacular. Back to the CD, some of the songs sound very similar to the Circlesong CD, if you like that, you'll like this too. A tip I have for you considering this CD is listen to the sampler tracks and see if you like it before getting this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Jazz Album.......2004-05-16

Get ready for action. Bobby joins Omar Hakim, Chick Corea, and Richard Bona to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Yum! Your guests will ask, "What in the world is this beautiful music?"

5 out of 5 stars Caught me by surprise.......2003-03-11

I've been a rock fan most of my life, but since I've been playing bass I've been listening to a lot more jazz. I bought this disc because Jazz Times gave it a good review. It's a great jazz album, but I was totally caught off guard by how much I enjoyed the world music aspects of the disc. Bobby's silky smooth lyrics just grabbed me, and the disc is now a permanent resident in my cd-changer.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!.......2002-09-21

What a wonderfully perfect CD! This is by far one of my favorites in my CD collection! Great for listening at work and I love listening to this on road trips. My favorite tracks are 4, 6, 12, 14 and 15. It's simply marvelous!

Recommend that you go to PAX TV local station, watch the "Worship" music/video scenes ...very restful and they have a video of this group that lasts at least an hour ...you have to watch them play and then you will buy this album without question...I suspect they share the faith but their music is not Christian although they have some Christian content. Can find more broadcast info at worship.net.

This is such a beautiful and relaxing album for anyone who enjoys easy listening music! I love the sound of the cello, and the guitar/guitjo blend perfectly on this album! I can't think of anything else to write, but again, I recommend this album to just anyone out there! I've even got a few friends hooked on Acoustic Eidolon! I told them about their website, their albums, and kept them informed on upcoming concerts!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01

This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Startlingly Fresh.......2003-06-12

I have seen Oregon a half-dozen times over the last 25 years. One of those was a trio concert. Frankly, it may have been the best I've ever heard them play.

Yes, of course Oregon fans miss Colin Walcott. Yes, of course the rhythms and (perhaps in Oregon's case, even more importantly) the textures are profoundly changed when they play as a trio without a percussionist. But to claim that this music is somehow without rhythmic intensity or without propulsion is absurd.

This is one of their very best records. I saw their last tune-up concert, 1 day prior to their doing this recording. On hearing this recording, I was astonished at how accurately the recording captured the qualities of their playing. It has a freshness and a bouyancy that few of their other recordings do.

If I could give it 6 stars, I would. If you don't own it, for heaven's sake buy it before it goes out of print (like you wish you had done with 45th Parallel!).

I haven't listened to anything else since I got this CD. It has completely ensnared me, with the same power that Renaissance of the Celtic Harp did 30 years ago. He plays six different harps, including four that he designed and had built, including a "cristal-plexiglas" one. It all works beautifully.

Get it, listen, be carried away.
