Zydeco Dynamite: The Clifton Chenier Anthology

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
The most comprehensive way to get to know the late "King of Zydeco," this beautifully packaged and annotated two-CD set contains cuts spanning accordionist Chenier's entire career as the best known performer and chief innovator of the Gulf Coast's most danceable, infectious music. Beginning with a rare early cut he recorded at a radio station in Lake Charles, Louisiana, this set's 40 tracks cover his years on Specialty, Zynn, Arhoolie, Maison de Soul, and several other smaller labels, veering back and forth between hard rockin' R&B influenced material and more traditional two-steps and waltzes. Most of the great Chenier-penned classics like "Zydeco Cha Cha," "Hot Rod," "Hot Tamale Baby" and "Johnny Can't Dance" are here. Overall, an excellent picture of Chenier's towering talents. --Robert Baird

I recieved this CD set in the mail right before July 4th and was able to play it outside while the family was feasting on my Oak wood roasted pulled pork butt. Believe it or not I don't know what was better the music or the food. You have to give it to R Growing Up With Television: Everyday Learning Among Young Adolescents

Book Description
"TV is for when you don't have anything to do, or when you're lonely, or something. It's for you to learn, things and stuff...say you don't have anything to do, you can always turn it on for light or whatever...I'm alone, I don't like to leave the TV off. Unless I'm getting ready to go to sleep or something, I turn out all the lights...And then I leave it on, I go to my room and watch videos. I just like it."
—TeniyaSerita, age 12

Why talk with young people about TV? This is the question from which JoEllen Fisherkeller begins her insightful examination into the uses and power of TV in youth culture.

Fisherkeller studies the experiences of young adults watching TV and talking about TV, with their peers at home and at school. They discuss their hopes for the future as well as the challenges they currently face, and reveal how television plays a role in their everyday life.

As the most significant cultural symbol in the US, television is a powerful educational and socializing force; Fisherkeller examines how youth are attracted to TV programs and persona that help them work through their own personal dilemmas. And TV as a system shows them how "making it" is as much a question of image creation as it is a process of hard work.

Throughout the book there is a range of young adults' voices about how they live with television, and an essential acknowledgement of the power that television has on individuals and social relations. Growing Up with Television is a groundbreaking book that should speak to a multitude of disciplines on the educative and societal power of this uniquely ubiquitous medium.
