Rough Guide to World Music

Editorial Reviews

"I hate world music," wrote David Byrne, who went on to explain that he disliked a vague marketing label that ghettoized the majority of the world's music. The Rough Guiders who compiled this insanely far-flung anthology, conversely, apparently adore the term's catchall nature. Which is why you'll find everything from Colombian salsa fireball Joe Arroyo to the Gaelic "mouth music" of Scot singer Talitha MacKenzie here and a whole lot more. World music usually signifies roots less than fusion, which is why Mali singer Oumou Sangare's electrified traditionalism sounds just fine beside the avant-psychedelic guitar of Henry Kaiser and Malagasy singer Roger Georges. A certain disproportion is probably inevitable. Africa, with its incomparable dance rhythms, weighs in heavy with contributions by Youssou N'Dour (Senegal), Zaiko Langa Langa (Zaire), and Cecile Kayirebwa (Rwanda), while Asia is represented only by Guo Yue and Joji Hirota's flute duo. Irish folk, Louisiana zydeco, and Nubian blues are also represented here. But anyone interested in learning more about these artists will have to refer back to The Rough Guide to World Music for more information. --Richard Gehr

5 out of 5 stars Vibrant Vocals and Versatile Vibes from Vietnam.......2007-07-15

On the Rough Guide musical tour of the world, next stop is Vietnam! And as usual they've excelled in offering a CD full of great music that's evocatively representative, widely ranging, and eminently listenable. From contemporary pop songs to time-honored folk lyrics, from popularly traditional melodies to globally-influenced innovations, this CD will take you on a crash tour of one of the most exciting musical landscapes on the planet (and the stuff people in Vietnam are really listening to). If you've never heard Vietnamese music before, you can't find a better intro than this album. On the other hand, if you've been a big fan of Vietnam's incredible music for years, you'll appreciate this fine selection and find a few surprises--Vietnamese Blues? "Rider in the Sky" on the dan bao recorded poolside in Saigon? You'll only hear it here! But every track is golden in its own way, lovingly handpicked by the compiler as is standard practice with Rough Guide CDs.

Speaking of the compiler, Paul Fisher's liner notes are well-written and do the job nicely of introducing each performer and singer while contextualizing and placing the music within the overall musical culture of Vietnam--no stuffy musicological details, just the right amount of background so that the listener can pretty much know and appreciate what's playing. And the tracks are introduced in the order that they appear on the CD (a common sense arrangement that some Rough Guide CDs have gotten a bit too fancily experimental with), so it's easy to follow along with the music--at least the first time, and with this music, it'll be the first time of many!

Any Frenchman worth his pedigree should be quick to point out that it was the French who invented cafe music, a style of late-19th- and early-20th-century pop that originally blended light opera, local folk, chanson, and even silent film scores. Its main purpose was to help fill out silences in conversations or meals with charming little songs. The music quickly migrated (along with other facets of French culture) to the other side of the Mediterranean where French colonies in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia picked up the habit. Now decades later, the cafe concept is updated and localized, often by young musicians who blend the modern and traditional, African and European, to create the same effect as the original cafe style. The tracks range from the playful Cheb Balowski to the hypnotic El Tanbura to oud master Jean Pierre Smadj to the rocking Les Boukakes. It's music from a place where the aroma of strong sweet coffee mingles with tobacco. -- Tad Hendrickson

The follow up to 1999's Rough Guide To Bhangra, Rough Guide To Bhangra Dance focuses on recent mutations of this flexible music genre also known as "desi beats." Originally brought to England by North Indian Punjabi immigrants and their children, bhangra mutated in cities like London and Birmingham in the 80s to reflect the new surroundings of the artists and audience. The barrel-shaped dhol drum is still at the center of the clattering bhangra sound, but the 15 tracks here range from Four Of A Kind's boy-band leanings to Veronica's modern R&B-ish grooves to the traditional-minded Daljit Mattu & Ravi Bal. The music's party vibe works surprisingly well in conjunction with the strict aesthetics of hip-hop, dancehall and dance music, and has actually been incorporated by artists in those genres (Missy Elliott being a notable example). Nonetheless, this is an excellent line-up of artists coming out of the Indian tradition looking to Western forms in search of new fusions. --Tad Hendrickson

      Album Description

From its humble beginnings as a folk dance in northwest India, the British-Asian phenomenon of bhangra has incorporated Western instruments, such as the electric guitar, bass and keyboards, and evolved into the energetic and highly popular club and dance music it is today. This album features some of the hottest bhangra beats and the funkiest names on the British-Asian scene.

5 out of 5 stars Hi! Hi! HI!.......2006-10-03

this is the music to accompany a dance craze that is going to the big urban centers in the USA right now after having been a euro- phenom. I first heard about it when I was doing a websearch on music of India, then ordered the CD. My daughter hwo lives in DC was surprised to hear that I had gotten this, and she had just been to a Bhangra event at a a club there. The tracks are danceable and really really fun. some of it has a hip hop beat but the harmonies and melodies are so wonderfully fresh that you will find yourself humming along after on ly a listen or two....

5 out of 5 stars great intro to bhangra .......2006-06-14

being born in the states to bengali parents, there isnt as much popular music thats influenced by indian culture (bad rap looping aside). mostly, we (as in first generation americans) usually have to turn to british stuff for that crossover. bhangra is, for us, what rock en español or reggetón is for latinos.... its dancable and familiar. this cd, i think, has some awesome tracks on it... there is a whole spectrum of bhangra types- from the reggae-inspired to the more 'hip-hop' flavored stuff to the calm, religious 'akheer' (which is totally my favorite). you dont have to understand punjabi to enjoy it (i mean, i dont and nor do most of my indian friends... but we connect with it even though bhangra is a regional punjabi phenomenon... then again, reggetón is supposedly a puerto rican/caribeño thing and even argentinians and spaniards can dig it). anyway, the point is this cd has a good collection of songs that is very cool regardless of your background. neat songs, a lot of indian backgrounds (with traditional instruments like the veena and harmonuim) and pulsing dhol/syth rhythms. it makes you want to get up and dance, which is exactly what bhangra is for!

5 out of 5 stars Complex, lively music for listening or dancing.......2006-05-22

I stumbled across this CD on a display rack at Borders and listened to a few minutes and then bought it. I fell in love with the complexity and liveliness of the music. Most of the tracks have complex percussion of standard 4/4 count dance music but with lots of other percussion rhythms thrown in with various instruments. I can't identify many of the instruments but I certainly enjoyed them. The singing was also excellent and sometimes quite intricate.

This music is good for driving or anytime when you want to get into a happy energetic mood. It's also great for organized dancing. Most of it will work with salsa, hustle, or west coast swing. The energy of the music encourages a lot of improvisation and messing around. It is nearly perfect dance club music.

This is fun, lively, interesting, and enjoyable music. I highly recommend it. It inspired me to rip it to mp3 at a much higher quality level than I usually do. Usual is variable @ 192 kbps. This one rated averaging @ 256.

      Album Description

Turkey is a land where Europe meets Asia, and where the music and culture are shaped by influences from virtually every direction. In the cities, discos, and record stores blast the latest pop hits from the likes of Ebru Gündes, while evocative belly-dance music is ready to captivate the innocent passerby. If you turn the corner, you might find a trendy saz club or religious music, or you might run into a Rom (Gypsy) neighborhood and its famous all-night musical taverns. This album provides an insight into the vast array of music within Turkey, encompassing some of the country's most talented and celebrated artists.

5 out of 5 stars ALMOST AS GOOD AS BEING THERE..........2003-08-26

i was introduced to turkish music in a drunken bar (also introduced to raki, which will knock you on your tail FAST). i was entranced (by the music, not the raki), and bought a cd from the bartender. the cd i bought was definitely more "arabesque", whereas this wonderful collection brought back more concise memories of turkey...eating in restraurants situated on rooftops with warm breezes and stunning views... this cd is more classic, more genuine, it doesn't need to be another "fusion" disc, it is perfect just the way it is.

5 out of 5 stars The Eastern Edge of Europe...Western Edge of Asia.......2003-06-23

This one is sure to become a Rough Guide classic. Encompassing a polyglot mixture of Turkish musical styles, traditions and ethnic groups, this CD reveals unique sounds that have resulted from Turkey's equally unique position as a land spanning two continents. For those familiar with Islamic music, in particular music of the Arab countries, you will be able to detect the many differences between Turkish music and that of its neighbouring Islamic nations. Certain cuts on the CD, particularly parts of the track from Grup Yorum, have distinctly Greek sounds and structures while others draw strongly on Gypsy influences; still others contain musical elements from the neighbouring ex-Soviet states of Georgia and Armenia. The first five tracks are superb pop music, containing inventive vocals and catchy exotic melodies driven by a distinctively Turkish beat. These are balanced by Turkish gypsy, classical court music, Black Sea folk music, belly-dance style and even a Sufi track to top off the musical whirlwind. Outstanding tracks include the opener by Sezen Aksu (a pop classic), Omar Faruk Tekbilek's enchanting "Raks" belly dance music, a track from clarinet virtuoso Barbaros Erkose and his ensemble, a gyspsy music cut from Kemani Cemal Cinarli and a classical cut from Kudsi Erguner. However, every track is fascinating in its own right.

The scintillating sounds and exciting rhythms on this album make it a great buy for anyone who appreciates good music, however if you're like me and love the exotic sounds and irresistible bellydance percussion of Islamic music, it may well become one of your top albums!

5 out of 5 stars The Many Faces of Turkish Music.......2003-06-01

The Rough Guides series is a wonderful way to experience different styles of world music. Such is the case with this CD, but unlike most other CDs, which focused on specific regions or styles, this one had a vast array in front of it. Turkish music includes everything from Arabesk to Sufi mystical music to Anatolian folk music to Fasil (Gypsy music) to modern rock and metal. Theres a wide variety of different styles to Turkish music, so any attempt to make an overview has some difficulty ahead of it. Nonetheless, this is an excellent CD. The first track, "Güngörmemisler" by pop star Sezen Aksu is so beautiful it blew my mind. From there we are treated with more pop from Ebru Gündes, Sibel Can and Umit Sayin, plus an east-west fusion piece by Levent Yüksel. Alongside this are classical performances by Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Kudsi Erguner, calling to mind the rites of the Dervishes and the courts of Ottoman Sultans. Outside of mainstream Turkish culture, track 8, 11 and 13 give performances by Laço Tayfa & Hüsnü Senlendirichi, Biro Topaloglu and Kemanï Cemal Çinarli; tracks which reflect the artists' Romani (Gypsy) and Laz heritage rather than that of the Turks. Even politically charged messages by Gurp Yorum show up on this CD, making it an excellent CD on Turkey in general. My only comment is that it they could have included some music from the Turkish Kurds, but then again, maybe that would be pushing things a little too far. Over all, its a great CD and a nice buy for anyone who appreciates Turkish or Middle Eastern music.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile Mix Spans Centuries.......2007-08-04

I wanted some music to accompany a slide show I was making of China trip photos. This is perhaps the best mix that includes contemporary hits as well as classics from every era. In the process of listening, I learned alot about Chinese culture. The song notes inside the cover are very educational and informative. Good job, Rough Guides.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and accessible.......2005-11-15

I've heard several Rough Guide CDs that I've enjoyed, and I bought this one out of curiosity (I'm planning a trip to China next year).

I hadn't really even expected to like this-- in fact I thought it would just remain a curiosity-- but I have to say that it's my favorite of the Rough Guide series. It's very exotic yet somehow remains accessible, and I'm impressed at how diverse the selections are yet it still maanges to be fairly cohesive.

If you're at all interested in Chinese culture, or if you're interested in exploring world "pop" music, you'll be charmed by this CD.

      5 out of 5 stars A tour of Zhongguo.......2005-08-03

This album delivers on it's promise of a sampling of music from all over China. From the chanting and rythmic drumming of the northeast, to the charged political rock. Everything in between, including hard to track down (if you don't know specific artist's names) traditional music.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of Chinese music .......2004-08-02

This CD is great. I have given this as a gift to one of my friends and she enjoyed it. It does a great job of showing music from mainland China. Most music collections are just traditional Pipa or erhu or contain pop from HK, this CD showcases some of the best songs and best and influential bands of modern China. Both classic and modern styles have been represented well, but I want to talk about three artists in particular: Of course Cui Jian's song "Yi Wu Suo You" is a must for anyone who wishes to understand modern Chinese music, but even more interesting is the addition of two other artists. Ai Jing, probably the most underestimated modern folk-rocker was a great influence in the late 90's, and still has a large underground following in China. Even more amazing to me was the addition of my personal friends from the Fem-Punk Band "Hang on the Box" These girls are at the leading edge of Chinese music today. Their song "Yellow Banana" (from their cd of the same name)is a pretty good example of their music.
This is a great album to have if you want a crash course in Chinese Music. ^_^

      5 out of 5 stars Clarification.......2004-04-29

I haven't bought the CD--yet (though I plan to). I just wanted to clarify the purpose of the Cui Jian song in the collection. This singer is considered the father of Chinese rock'n'roll and was immensely popular in the 1980s for his iconclastic style. This song, "I have nothing" is a parody of a famous propaganda song promoted by the Chinese communist party, and it became the anthem of the disasterous 1989 Tiananmen Square movement. It clearly belongs in any introductory collection of Chinese music--and it's a great song.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional, the best of the rough guide series.......2003-08-11

This CD knocked me out from the first note. After listening to it on the bus 400 times I actually bought the Lonely Planet Senegal & Gambia (sorry Rough Guide...). The music of this region is jazzy, smooth, soulful, and completely unique. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Sene-Gambian Pop! Wow!.......2002-03-06

West Africa is famous for its great musicians. Indeed, many styles of music, such as the Blues, Jazz and Reggae, are believed to have their origins in the hereditary musician traditions of west Africa (particuarly the kingdom of Mali). Whether or not this is true, the music on this CD is particularly moving and beautiful. Another compilation in the Rough Guides series, this CD explores the musical traditions of the west African countries of Senegal and Gambia.
Several big names, such as Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour, Ismael Lo and Cheikh Lo, all appear on this CD, with excellent contributions from each. However, there is more to this music than the big names, already familar to the west. The songs "Kairaba Jabi" and "Nguisstal" are both excellent examples of Sene-Gambian music, and the number done by Orchestra Baobab is wonderfully lively. Over all, this CD is an excellent compilation of Sene-Gambian pop music, showcasing a variety of styles and artists. Go with it!

"Salsa dura" isn't simply a genre of music. It's a feeling, born of a certain people in a certain time. In this case--the sounds of dancehalls and hotel ballrooms of the Bronx, Spanish Harlem and Brooklyn in the 1970's. The lively Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC attempts to encapsulate that energy in an hour's worth of music. A heady task, but the collection does a good job of highlighting the premiere showmen of the genre. It's being kept alive today by all the classic and contemporary artists featured on the disc. Los Soneros Del Barrio, who formed in 1999, showcase tight grooves during "Babaila;" and bandleader Eddie Palmieri, whose career spans more than half a century, offers the sublime "Lo Que Traigo Es Sabroso II." Elsewhere, Jimmy Bosch's appropriately titled "El Embajador" ("The Ambassador") commands respect; and Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana do right by the standard "I Get a Kick Out of You." Horns blare, voices wail and you can practically see the twirls across the dance floor. The only quibble is a common one in the genre: a lack of female voices. Thankfully, Las Estrellas Cobo's "Don Ramon" features the confident swagger of Yousie Barbara. --Joey Guerra

          4 out of 5 stars DURAZNO SALSEANDO.......2007-06-24

This is a compilation of what I consider the dancing side of this style. Salsa Dura: the real sound that had been eclipsed by "salsa romántica" and "salsa erótica" since the '80s. ¿What`s "salsa romántica"?: romantic-pop-songs with a soft air of guaracha in the background, just to be used in TV novels. ¿And why "salsa erótica"?. ¿Because of the lyrics, meaning love and sex?. ¡¡¡Here is the erotic explossion, giles!!!. Here in the tasty rythm, in the piano riffs, in the powerful horns, in the soulful vocals and in the "descargas". Eddie Palmieri, ¡un capo!. Para gozar y bailar... ¡HARD SALSA for ever!

4 out of 5 stars Ya Wanna Dance?.......2007-04-25

Ok! So you thought that salsa was dead and gone in NYC... but you're wrong. Salsa is alive and well. This compilation cd is a great example. This release, Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC, more than lends itself as proof solid that you don't have to go to France or Japan to enjoy salsa. All the musicians in the cd, with perhaps the exception of the ever travelling Eddie Palmieri, regularly play in NYC. The tracks are all well chosen and lend themselves well to the dance floor. If you are new to salsa you'll pleasantly surprised, if you're already musically baptized, jump in the waters once again. Recommended
