The San Francisco Bay Area is a magnet for world music players, and Lumin is another bubble floating up from that global stew. The group is born from another band, called Stellamara, with Jeffrey Stott and Michael Emenau. In Lumin, they are joined by singer Irina Mikhailova. Born in Kazakhstan, Mikhailova is an enchantress who wails in a voice that fuses her Kazakh and Russian roots, with eastern European vocal styles and Middle Eastern effects. Sometimes singing in Bulgarian, her native Kazakh, or her own hybrid dialect, she creates the sound of ecstasy and lament, often simultaneously. Mikhailova is surrounded by a kinetic mix of grooves from Emenau, free-wheeling through a rhythmic landscape of electronic sounds and acoustic percussion samples. Stott weaves it all together, playing Middle Eastern oud, hammered dulcimer, and a bowed string & drone instrument called the yali-tambur. While rooted in folk music, it's a hallucinatory blend, laced to trance grooves and melodies that reach across the heavens and into the soul. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars The Sounds of Love.......2007-07-02

This CD is a single, freely flowing instrumental composition that succeeds perfectly in aligning the breath & heartbeat in active meditation. Its' rhythms are gentle, yet pulsating--and definitely entrancing. For people who really want more conventional pop/"New Age" selections that are made up of a number of short (less than 10 min.) tunes, this CD would probably not be of that much interest. However, for people seriously looking for mature meditation music--by all means try el-Hadra.

I don't want to upset anybody or bend any "Review Rules," but this CD is really incredible to make unhurried (Tantric) love by.

5 out of 5 stars Music to reduce your stress........2007-02-16

The beat of this music has a calming effect, not unlike that of a deep meditative state. It's constant soothing rhythm reminds me of a heartbeat. I use it regularly to reduce my stress and bring myself back to my center, sheding new light on difficult personal situations. I deep a few copies of this on hand to give away as I am often asked about it.

4 out of 5 stars Mediative/Yoga CD.......2007-01-11

The music flows endlessly, but it's too bad that the same song is replayed on the CD instead of a different one. This CD should be priced lower.

5 out of 5 stars surrender.......2006-12-09

This is my favorite piece of music. Musical sophistication and complexity spun into a harmonius sound that compells surrender. A must have to reconnect with yourself or your lover. Invokes softening. Its YUMMY!

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing music.......2006-03-28

This has been a favourite of mine for many years. I have listened it to help unwind after work, and while painting and drawing.

Probably best not to listen as you drive as it is maybe a bit too relaxing, but highly recommended if catching public transport.

4 out of 5 stars Lumin - just glows!.......2007-01-11

Wonderful meditative music - transports one to a peaceful place, but a place of mystery and exotic wonder.

3 out of 5 stars Lumin CD.......2006-11-14

Good listening CD, but not as good as I had expected from the listening preview.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Tribal Fusion Belly dance Music.......2006-06-26

Haunting blend of modern electronic sounds with earthy beats and angelic vocals. A rich, ethnic, world music perfect to perform tribal fusion belly dance to. I highly recommmend this CD to any tribal fusion belly dancers out there who like Pentaphobe or Solace and are looking for more exotic, electronic sound and resonating female vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully melodic, except..........2004-10-16

I found out about Lumin from the Hearts of Space web site and decided to give it a try. I really enjoy the music, and for the most part the vocals and instrumentation flow together in a wonderful, melodic world beat fusion manner. Unfortunately, in a few places the mixing has emphasized a rather sharp, two-dimensional electronic drum sound which sounds a bit dated. Track two, for example, has these drums prominently placed with the richer vocals and instrumentation tracks shunted to a more background role. Otherwise, it is an enjoyable cd and perhaps I can EQ down the offending pseudo-drums.

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing thing I have ever heard!.......2003-08-13

I bought this CD at [local store]when it first came out. I've always loved Middle Eastern style music and Lumin brings out a gorgeous combination of Arabic and western tones. This is a must-have for anyone interested in international music.

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem.......2000-07-29

Having intially received this CD due to the presence of one track of Bulgarian choral music, I was astonished to discover the presence of a musical treasure trove!

"Sacred Planet" embodies everything an album should be. Not a mere collection of songs, each track leads well into the next, creating a soothing and fascinating listening experience. Care has obviously been taken to blend the songs together in a comprehensive phrase of music, rather than the clutter and clash of moods that so many albums seem to consist of.

This album is a collection of music from around the world. Each piece is a compelling look inside a given musical culture, and can be appreciated for its individual beauty. As a whole, any listener will be intrigued by being able to compare and contrast musical styles of many different cultures and time periods. This album houses inspiring music that motivates the listener to expand his or her horizons, branching out in unusual and deeply satisfying directions. A stunning procession of both vocal and instrumental music, this album must be heard to be believed.
