Remarkable and gorgeous.......2007-03-24
I could listen to Mulher, Sempre Mulher and Tarde em Itapua all afternoon. Actually, I have!
A beautiful homage........2006-11-14
Maria Bethânia has carved out a distinctive place for herself amongst the pantheon of Brazilian greats of the last half century.
Her love for the dramatic, the theatrical and the unashamedly romantic has earned her a place in the hearts of a devoted fan-base and today, 40 years after her debut show in Rio set her on the path to stardom, she is still one of the biggest names in Brazilian music.
It is also 40 years since she first met the legendary poet, lyricist and co-founder of the bossa nova movement Vinícius de Moraes, an early supporter with whom she went on to forge an enduring friendship.
To celebrate this double anniversary, Bethânia has produced "Que Falta Você Me Faz" ( this is the original title of the album), a homage to Vinícius that draws on material from across his luminous career, including his near-mythical collaborations with Tom Jobim and Baden Powell.
Typically, Bethânia has sought out material with a dramatic edge. Her selections range from the smooth, confident samba of `Lamento no Morro' to the introspective `O Astronauta'. Her smoky, controlled delivery is complemented perfectly by an expansive musical setting based around sensitive arrangements of piano, guitar and percussion. Unfortunately, the glossy, overwrought strings that Bethânia too often relies upon to provide the emotional punch are also present on many of the tracks, needlessly distracting from the otherwise subtle performances.
"Que Falta..." is at its best on songs such as "Modinha" and the closing "Nature Boy" (with brother Caetano Veloso) when the backing is kept simple, allowing the quality of the songwriting and Bethânia's remarkable voice to shine.
At moments of undeniable beauty such as these, the set borders on perfection.

Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05
I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.
a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.
Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.
This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.
2. "Brasileirinho", by Waldir Azevedo, featuring Paquito D'Rivera, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
It also includes a very short interview with Yo Yo Ma.

A Brazilian expatriate living in Brooklyn, former rock star and hit songwriter Vinicius Cantuária recorded six records in his native land prior to teaming up with producer Arto Lindsay and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto for his first American album. Cantuária always claims that moving to New York actually made him become more Brazilian. Indeed, the deep and understated Sol na Cara ("The Sun on Your Face") consists mostly of subtle bossa nova melodies (often cowritten with Caetano Veloso, Sakamoto, and others) set to the undulating folk rhythms of northern Brazil. While Cantuária's lyrics, soft voice, and nylon-stringed acoustic-guitar playing signify unabashed romanticism (even when he's singing about his favorite soccer players), Sakamoto's atmospheric keyboards lend an air of almost otherworldly cosmopolitanism to a 1996 album that seems to have aged like a fine wine. --Richard GehrCustomer Reviews:
another great release from Vinicius!.......2003-10-10
His Best Release.......2002-08-15
His sound is very dark and soulful, this is an acoustic album. His style tends to use sound effects in the background, but there is a charm to his style that makes him very easy to listen to. A smooth voice and a nice message. He is a poet. This particular release has the translations in the cover sheet which also is a nice touch to those that cannot speak portuguese. Good touch IMO.
I'd pick this one up - definitely before the later two. And if you like this, pick up some of Joao Gilberto's acoustic releases - namely Voz e Viola.
Wonderful, happy, charming, wistful, modern.......2001-12-01
His later material (Tucuma, for example) is more "neo", but these songs reflects the older bossa nova sweet cadence.
I especially liked Samba da Estrela, but all are great.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Brazilian star Vinicius Cantuária moved to New York in the '90s and has been keeping company with avant-popsters and jazzers such as Arto Lindsay and Bill Frisell, both present here. Tucumã is rivetingly beautiful from the first play, keeping its bossa nova rhythms light on their feet while sprinkling offbeat, Tusk-like touches through the mix. Even more than Cantuária's previous Sol na Cara, this is a keeper. --Rickey WrightAmazon.com
Bossa nova has a deceptively easy-on-the-ear feel. The harmonic twists and turns, the compact rhythmic variations, the tricky melodies all seem smoothed out by the whispering of the words, the soft touch. In moving beyond bossa nova, singer, guitarist, percussionist, and songwriter Vinicius Cantuária takes a similar strategy. Working with an impressive group of guests, including Laurie Anderson, Bill Frisell, Arto Lindsay, Sean Lennon, Nana Vasconcelos--the list is long--Cantuária offers music that reveals itself bit by bit, in the details. His opening "Amor Brasileiro," a bossa nova, includes a quirky guitar and a Milesian trumpet; "Maravilhar" suggests a sly tribute to Getz/Gilberto. Every piece has a peculiar twist, and the overall effect is at once familiar and fresh: the urgency of "Sanfona"; the slightly sinister, obsessive "Retirante"; the slightly off-kilter "Aviso do Navegante." The music is easy on the ear, all right, but you will want to take a closer listen--it is worthy. --Fernando GonzalezCustomer Reviews:
Melancholic and more Traditional.......2004-10-08
The feel of the cd is very acoustic with a few sound effects at different times and slight electronic dashes in select tracks. But to stress it, this is a very acoustic album wit ha traditional feel. It starts out with Amor Brasileiro, a track with no real bass at all. Just his haunting yet easy voice over the guitars. Maravilhar is a track that has a nice samba beat in the background - very very romantic. Sanfona kicks it up a little bit, but then it's sraight into acoustic bliss with Aracaju. "Pra Gil" - the music is like the moment just before the sun melts into the landscape. But the lyrics... tell a different tale. This is a cd that reminds me of the fall, the leaves changing and countryside roads along the coast.
This is NOT an album that will inspire you to jump out of bed and run a few sprints. But I do like this album - maybe not as much as "Vinicius" which came afterwards, but maybe as much as "Sol Na Cara". The music is great and the songs are very rich and I'd recommend it to anyone that's already a fan of his work, or looking for something more relaxed. And if you dig this, you'd probably like music by Celso Fonseca. Vinicius Cantuaria has a few more releases out too - one new one titled "Horse & Fish" and a live performance. Only a few days ago he performed live in NYC and before that Washington DC but I think he's now in Europe.
Get the album "Vinicius" and leave this one alone........2003-10-10
Top-Notch Brazilian music; the REAL DEAL.......2001-08-19
The first tune on "Tucuma": "Amor Brasileiro," is in the same vein and maybe even better than "Agua Rasa"; too bad you can't hear a sample here. It's one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard but it's more than just simple 'romance,' this guy has a poet's sensibility that pushes his tunes far above anyone else. He's in a class of his own like Gilberto and Jobim but his musicianship and sound concept is more influenced by modern pop and experimental sounds than straight Jazz (he even has a wonderfully eccentric tribute instrumental written for Ryuichi Sakamoto). And he's totally into his own thing, and sometimes even progressive enough to be in avant-garde territory as in the tune "Retirante" featuring a guest appearence by Laurie Anderson. Also: surprise of surprises, Sean Lennon, the son of the ultra-famous you know who and who, plays bass guitar on some of these tunes alongside New York jazz scene heavyweights. The great guitarist Bill Frisell makes an invaluable contribution to the sound and some tunes also add great eccentric understated string arrangments that never ever get in the way of the heart and soul of Canuaria's art but add sophistication and spice. Believe me, no one hates string sections more than me when they're not done right, and all the arrangements here are damn near perfect. In fact, my least favorite tune is the one that sounds the most like Getz/Gilberto and has a sax solo on it: "Maravilhar". There might have been some pressure to write at least one sort of 'familiar' tune like this, I don't know, but everything else is rooted in Bossa yet quite fresh and anti-rehash.
All in all, 8 out of 11 tunes on this album I never program around them and the other 3 I sometimes put in as a variation which is to say, it merits a high recommendation indeed!
P.S. If you like this album, check out "na rua, na chuva, na fazenda..." by Hyldon which is not just a classic of 1970s Brazilian music, unknown in the USA, but one of the greatest soul albums ever made, on a par with anything by Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye or Bill Withers.
Cool Bossa with shades of Zen.......2001-02-14
Relaxed Depth, Mature Musicianship.......1999-12-01
Tucuma is another example for the strong capability of some contemporary Brazilian musicians to link their tradition directly with oversears and directly with the future (Like Lenine, Caetano, Daude). It's amazing: There's the relaxed voice and acoustic guitar playing of Vinicius Cantuaria, his rich compositions, then there's Bill Frisell and some other New Yorkers bringing in their interpretation of Brazil, and then there is an additional layer of sample/loop/sound-design behind everything - and it works. You will enjoy this album over and over again, there's a richness of detail that invites closer listening and never fails to reveal some further beauty.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Though he uses the luscious framework of traditional bossa nova--steamy rhythms, bittersweet melodies, and soft singing--Brazilian star Vinicius Cantuaria is more subversive than slavish. As on his previous stateside releases, 49-year-old Cantuaria draws upon the modern language of sampling, sound effects, and the mood of dark soundtracks to imbue his forlorn, deeply blue acoustic bossa with an otherworldly quality. A former drummer with Caetano Veloso, Cantuaria seems to enjoy slow-motion fission. His songs float and drift, suspended in space by the slightest effort of his liquid voice and gentle acoustic guitar strumming. Electric guitarists Marc Ribot and Bill Frisell add resonant shades of red and hot pink to the simmering mix, as in the beautiful, hazy version of Jobim's "Ela e Carioca." Also onboard are bassist Marc Johnson, drummers Paulo Braga and Joey Baron, pianist Brad Mehldau, and vocalist Veloso."Agua Rasa" is one of the album's many glimmering moments, a soft, undulating melody underlying a tale that sounds utterly familiar and intimate, even if it's in Portuguese. "Ordinaria" uses a street samba groove and the sound of clinking bottles, muted trumpet, and low bass for a kind of desolate, sun-scorched Brazilian epic poem. Cantuaria's guitar unfurls poignantly here as a trumpet cries over rolling brush strokes. It's romantic, yet somehow tragic. "Rio," with David Byrne, is street-smart and sassy, rumbling with frame drum and eerie samples. "Nova de Sete" recalls Jobim, a lovely, fragile song supported by a lonely, lost vocal and Bill Frisell's haunting guitar tones. --Ken Micallef

Vinicius Cantuaria is another successful artists that I first heard on that compilation. His melodies and music is spectacular and smooth - and is perfect for a romantic evening or a quiet walk or drive on the beach, if you are lucky enough to live on the coast. My favorite tracks on the disk are the third, fourth and eigth along with the more festive final track, Caju. I recommend this disk. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for something a bit slow, quiet, subtle and relaxing with terrific musicians and voices.
