Customer Reviews:
Not nearly as good as Vol. 1.......2007-04-26
I love Ella Fitzgerald, so any of her albums are great, but for some reason this just doesn't have the same magic as Vol. 1 in this series. That is one of my favorite CDs, so I thought this one would be as good. She is always amazing, and the better songs on this album are 'Night and Day', 'So In Love', 'I've Got you Under My Skin', and 'Don't Fence Me In.' The last is probably my favorite. For an Ella fan, it's worth buying. But buy 'Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook Vol. 1' first.
The Voices of Angels.......2005-08-30
Ella Fitzgerald is one of those rare people that can seldom be found in the world of musicians and vocal singing Jazz Ballads. She is masterful in both Volumes One and Two of the Cole Porter Song Book CD's. If you want to hear an angel on earth sing get both these CD's from Amazon.com, especially if your going to propose marriage to someone during dinner, I recommend that you have this music playing softly in the backround.
THE BEST COLE PORTER ALBUM EVER.......2001-07-28
This and Vol. 1 of "The Cole Porter Songbook" is the best collection of Porter's songs you'll find. Fitzgerald hits all the right beats. She's emotional when she should be emotional. Flirty when she should be flirty. Perhaps the most appealing part of her performance is the sense of humor that shines through. And so does Porter's. It's the best songwriter and the best singer all in one. How can you beat it? If you don't have Vol. 1, buy the complete set. You'll save money in the long run. Because you'll want both volumes once you have one of 'em.
I love Ella in the springtime.......2000-06-05
Even better than volume one. From the gorgeous rendition of I Love Paris to the delightful and fun Don't Fence Me In (which noone else should even bother singing again because Ella has perfected it), this CD has one great song after another, different in moods, yet united by their great arrangements and above all Ella's clear beautiful voice and perfect phrasing. On some of the tracks, especially I've Got You Under My Skin (this version blows Sinatra's away) and Don't Fence Me In, the sound quality is remarkable and it sounds like it was recorded yesterday not in the mid 50s.
De-Lovely.......2000-04-21
The companion to volume 1--you can't have one without the other. Beautiful, lyrical renditions of "I Love Paris" and "So in Love." "It's All Right with Me" is really hot, and "Don't Fence Me In" is a fun finish. Really, they're all favorites. As with volume 1, Buddy Bregman provides the apt orchestra arrangements. I can't honestly say whether I prefer either volume; whenever I listen to one of them, I invariably play the other immediately afterward.

Ella Can Do No Wrong.......2007-05-27
No matter what she sings, it's genious, and the combination of her with Berlin is magic.
Another "must have" from the "First Lady"!.......1999-06-24
The Irving Berlin Songbook is in a word, SUPERB. I first heard this album over 20 years ago at my Grandmother's house in Michigan; I had been thumbing through her record collection and happened across this album. Up until that time I had only a glancing familiarity of her work, "A-Tisket A-Tasket" notwithstanding.
However, upon hearing "How Deep Is The Ocean?", I was gone, sunk, hooked, you name it! Twenty years later and that one song has the power to bring me to tears because of it's sheer beauty. I'm a sucker for strings simply because they can transform a song into something lush and rich and wonderful, which is exactly what the strings in "How Deep" do; from the dramatic opening strains to the bridge in the middle (along with the brief sax solo)which lifts you straight to the clouds, to the absolute gorgeous and tender finish, this song never fails in taking my breath away. "Now It Can Be Told", another stunner included on this album, frames Ella's superb vocals like a musical photograph.
For pure scat pleasure, "Blue Skies" simply ROCKS! That tune is simply awesome, defintely a song to listen to with the top down and the wind in your hair! "You Can Have Him" is another gem among the stand-outs on this album; underneath the light, breezy playful tempo, Ella proclaims to "The Other Woman" that "he's not the man for me" despite the fact that she wants to cook, clean, kiss and cuddle him, "rub his forhead with a gentle touch/mornings after when he's had too much" and have a score of children with the man! Let's face it, we know that she's absolutely loopy for the guy!
"Suppertime" is a number that is equally tense as "You Can Have Him" is playful, about a woman's realization that her man "ain't comin' home no more" (according to the play the song was taken from, he had been lynched). The release in the song, "how can I be thankful/when they have to thank the Lord/Lord" is simply shattering; you can feel Ella's anguish throughout.
"Always", which was a valentine of sorts from Berlin to his wife, remains as timeless today as it did when Ella recorded it in 1958. To know that someone will be loving you, good or bad, up or down, is something to treasure. Defintely a great wedding song.
All in all, this is a wonderful album to own, and it's a great starting point for discovering two great American treasures: Ella Fitzgerald and Irving Berlin; the songs are timeless masterpieces to be cherished by this generation and the next. Give in to the magic, the mystery, the majesty that is Ella Fizgerald; I promise you won't be disappointed!

Only Frank Sinatra has put his indelible stamp on as many pages of the American Popular Songbook as Ella Fitzgerald. But while Sinatra specialized in mood-themed albums (his composer-based collections were compiled from material already released), Fitzgerald's ambitious songbooks devoted themselves to one great songwriter after another: Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, and so on. The two-volume Rodgers and Hart project ranks with the best, and if Buddy Bergman's arrangements are a bit sweeter than his Cole Porter settings, or Nelson Riddle's Gershwin treatments, they suit the material just fine. And what a wide range of material it is (with original verses intact!), intermingling novelty show tunes ("Give it Back to the Indians," "Johnny One Note"), sophisticated standards ("Manhattan," "Blue Moon," "The Lady is a Tramp"), and lush ballads ("Isn't it Romantic," "It Never Entered My Mind"). But for my money, the most exquisite thing Fitzgerald ever recorded is her seven-minute "Bewitched" (a.k.a. "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered") on Vol. 2, casting a spell of hushed reverie that makes time stand still. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Great CD of Ella's!.......2001-06-21
The two that comes to mind on this CD is 'Isn't It Romantic' and 'Bewitched'. To me, these two songs were truly written for Ella Fitzgerald by Rodgers & Hart!!
I've listen to other performers singing 'Isn't It Romantic' like Tony Bennett, and he can not even come close to the special romantic feeling that Ella has for this song. Something that came directly from her soul!
Those two songs and the others are a good example why you should buy this album.
Bewitching.......2000-05-16
What a pleasure it's been to discover how this album improves with each listening. Great songs performed by a great voice. Several of these songs exist in better-known versions by other artists--but better-known doesn't necessarily mean better. Highlights include Ella's bittersweet rendering of "Ten Cents a Dance," the upbeat "Mountain Greenery," her slow, lyrical "Blue Moon." And her performance here of "Bewitched" is unsurpassed. That alone is worth the price of the CD.
There is no praise high enough to describe this combination.......1999-10-10

Ella Sings Arlen.......2007-05-13
Ella at her prime! Marvelously rich and gentle. Now of a certain age, I grew up on this stuff.
A Hidden Treasure.......2000-07-18
Many of Ella's best loved tracks are recycled endlessly on compilation albums but buying a collection like this gives you a chance to unearth a hidden treasure. One track in particular - Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe - is just such a treasure. Ella sings the beautiful lyrics in perfect harmony with the laid-back Billy May arrangements which sweep across the whole album. You won't hear tracks like this on the radio. Buy them for yourself.
One of the Classics.......1999-03-11
This is one of my favorite Ella recordings..... she sings these beautiful songs with the purity of voice and her own special interpretive style that no other singer has been able to match. Her rendition of "Written in the Stars" alone is worth the price of the set, but just about everything on it is great.

A TRULY JAZZY SET.......2004-07-07
How could it be any different when it's Ellington that Sassy is doing? I prefer this collcection to her Volume 1. It's probably personal taste. V.2 swings while v.1 are ballads. She truly showed off her very individualistic jazz style on all 11 peices. I only knew 3 songs before I orginally bought the tribute. Still I'm glad I became acqainted with I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues, Rocks In My Bed, Tonight I Shall Sleep & the rest. All of the unkown songs are treasures to me. That hasn't happened too often on other cds or lps. Truly a one of a kind !
A Divine Work.......2001-02-04
A Divine Gift from a Divine Voice singing music by the Duke. This disk is one of those fine recordings that people dream of taking with them to a desert island. Sassy's opening track is one of the richest blues ever recorded. Every moment of this album is perfection.

Customer Reviews:
THE SORT OF MUSIC THAT BOSTRIDGE'S VOICE WAS MADE FOR.......2002-10-09
Ian Bostridge has one of the most beautiful voices on record, and he has consistently shown courage and wisdom in selecting material that will extend and develop his gifts. Not all of this material has been a perfect match for his young and soaring tenor voice, notably some of Schubert's more dramatic "lieder". In contrast, nothing could be more perfectly suited to his voice than this generous and beautiful collection of traditional English poetic settings by Britten, Finzi, Grainger, Warlock and others.
Bostridge brings more than just a beautiful tone and a subtle musical phrasing to these songs. The challenge any intepreter of English songs has to face is that, in contrast with the pure syllables of most continental languages, the complex vowels of "Southern British English" are formidably difficult to render attractively in song. It's not just a question of singing them prettily. Think how accurately the pronunciation of a word like "house" or "bath" can betray someone's geographical and social background; our vowels are a caste-mark as well as a means of communication. But somehow Bostridge himself, in his fruitful partnership with Julius Drake, manages to transcend our socio-linguistic divisions and deliver these songs in a way that places no barrier between the listener and the music.
The material is wonderful in its own right - a collection of lilting pastoral airs and occasional boisterous ditties. They are at one and the same time ancient and modern, embracing at once the mutual cross-fertilisation between classical and "pop" sensibilities that has always underpinned the best of English music. Even the most trivial of these songs (e.g. "Jillian of Berry") are memorable, and some of them (notably Sir Charles Stanford's chilling musical setting of the Keats' poem, "La Belle Dame Sans Merci") would not have been beneath Schubert himself.
It has been fashionable over the generations to belittle British classic music. "The land without song" England was dubbed, as the sleeve notes poignantly remind us. This CD is a healthy reminder that the global success of English popular music in the latter four decades of the 20th century did not appear out of nowhere; it was built on a solid foundation of past accomplishment that it was for too long fashionable to dismiss. Highly recommended.
Artistry beyond measure.......2002-09-20
This disk is a wonderful treasure. "To Gratiana Dancing and Singing" is an exquisite song that you should not go another day without hearing. I am speaking literally.
Mr. Bostridge's interpretation of Browne's song is amazingly compelling. His ability to express goes beyond that of most other singers - even some great ones. He notes the problems in singing in English (the "extra" vowels, the English vs. German approach to word painting, etc.) and I have to say he triumphs on this disk.
As he also notes, this is NOT a recording of a recital program nor are the songs "English" in nationality - the songs are just set to texts in the English language. I had not heard of some of these composers, but I am enthusiastic in saying that every song on this disk has something very nice to recommend it - at least at the voice and hands of Ian Bostridge and Julian Drake.
I must say a few words about Mr. Drake's playing. Overall he is simply incredible. He has a beauty of tone and a singing style that is not in anyway mere accompaniment. It really isn't even a partnership. It is a unity of artistry that creates this single entity, a song. There aren't many that can pull this off and Mr. Drake should be treasured for this ability. Just amazing artistry.
Please get every disk that Mr. Bostridge and Mr. Drake have done together. You will thank me for recommending this if you didn't know this already. Feel free to email me with your thoughts on this disk or any comments you have about Bostridge and Drake.
Perfectly Enjoyable.......2002-02-09
I already liked Ian Bostridge, but I thought "English songs" would be rather light and without substance. But I have fallen in love with this CD and never tire of it! I was already an admirer of Vaughan Williams, Britten, Finzi, Warlock and Delius, and I'm glad for this introduction to other composers as well. Also, much beautiful poetry is chosen, from Shakespeare, Yeats, Rossetti, Keats, and others, and each is treated with careful consideration by the composer, *partnering* music with poetry rather than simply enhancing or overshadowing the lyric. Bostridge seems to have the perfect voice for this music, light and charming when appropriate, heart-breaking at other times, always an engaging storyteller. He obviously understands intimately each word and note that he sings. The listener can hear his facial expressions and body language! The English Songbook is a beautiful collection of excellent craftsmanship, and one of the best CDs I have.
Do Not Be Deceived By His Look Of Innocence.......2001-10-14
Just look at Ian on the cover photo of this CD. He's sitting there looking coy, playing with his finger, hair a little mussed, with a very cute boyish smile, as if to say, "I didn't do anything wrong mommy, honest." Well he has done it this time.
This CD was my first exposure to Ian Bostridge. I bought it because I was very surprised to know that one of my favorite poems, the Cloths of Heaven by Yeats, was set to music. I spent 17 bucks for one song, and ended up cashing in on 23 others.
To Gratiana Dancing and Singing quickly became a favorite, as did Bold William Taylor. This last one was my first realization of Ian's gift of storytelling. Somehow he is able to make his voice sound like a woman, namely Sally Gray, and the narrator, and the macho Captain, all in the same song. The multiple personalities come out to play similarly in The Death of Queen Jane. I am lulled into quiet reflection and relaxation when Ian sings the Cradle Song.
Check out his CDs of Schubert Lieder, also accompanied by Julius Drake. Ian may be even more at home in German than he is in his native English! Julius is at home with Schubert, especially the water songs, and we are at home listening to this wonderfully weird, warm voice paired with masterful piano playing.
One of the best English-Song CD's available.......2001-09-12
Unlike the reviewer "A music fan from California, USA" I realize that this is not a recital program of music (as even noted in the liner). This is though, an unequaled collection of some of the most beautiful English Songs ever. Ian is on top of his game and J Drake plays, well, I don't have the words. He never fails to impress with his skills. Each key under each finger sings! Back to Ian. As a professional tenor, I am in awe of his voice. It is tender, moving, all the things you want in a good recitalist, and (unlike any of the opera tenors I can think of) it is note perfect. Yes, there are times when his voice seems a little light for the song he may be performing, but it is passionate and caries the pathos of each note/word he sings. BUY THIS CD - you will love it for ever!

Good way to start!.......2006-10-04
This album set I found to be pretty decent for those who want to try some Classic American songs. I sure wish that there was a 3rd to this series!
ANYTHING BUT DEFINITIVE!.......2005-09-28
This may look like a great buy, but in fact these are for the most part second rate performances that don't do the songs or their historical period justice. Many sound like they're off the cuting room floor and others are simply "filler".
Good collection, but not definitive...........2003-10-04
Short review here...
After listening to this set of two discs (A-I and J-Z), I was really pleased with the cross section of artists they served up. I was not real happy with the song selections though. There are far, far better songs done by each artist that could more effectively capture what this set was trying to accomplish.
I do have one serious critique of disc A-I: what were they thinking when they put Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes" on there??? I started to sing that Sesame Street song "One of these is not like the other...". Maybe it was an error or oversight, but either way, detracted from the disc.
This collection will take you back to the yesteryears, but other recordings can do it much better.

SUPER PORTER RENDITIONS.......2003-02-14
Volume 2 of the complete COLE PORTER songbooks on VERVE is a clinger all the way.Songs like EVERYTHING I LOVE,GIVE HIM THE OOH-LA-LA and MOST GENTLEMEN DON'T LIKE LOVE are not often recorded.ANITA gives us a typical treatment of MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY which means her way;The ELLA renditions are not from the songbooks of 1956;i personnaly enjoy AFTER YOU,WHO from the magical voice of HELEN MERRILL and SO IN LOVE done in cha-cha by that maneater par excellence DINAH WASHINGTON.This is an excellent tibute to COLE PORTER,well worth buying.
Excellent compilation!.......2002-08-11
Terrific versions of classic Porter songs recorded by jazz's greatest vocalists... It's hard to go wrong with this CD. This is the second volume of the Cole Porter's songbook and it is appreciably better than the first volume, which was titled "Night & Day"
I get a kick out of Cole Porter.......2001-01-07
This is an excellent compilation of Cole Porter's famous and not-so famous but nonetheless excellent songs. A wonderful tribute to a wonderful man.
