Album Description

On any Saturday night, rollicking down-home music can be heard throughout the USA, be it bluegrass, blues, boogie woogie, country, Cajun, zydeco, Texas Swing, or Texas Mexican conjunto. Down Home Saturday Night has them all. Smithsonian Folkways archivist Jeff Place compiled these fifteen tracks of American regional and ethnic roots music with one idea in mind--to bring people together and have fun with music and musicians from across the land.

Playing Time - 46:52 -- The 15 songs on "Down Home Saturday Night" were picked to represent "the most rocking, rollicking and partying tracks" the music archivists could find in the Smithsonian Folkways collection originally obtained from the estate of Moses Asch in 1987. Celebrating those venues where everyday folks gathered to kick up their heels on Saturday nights, the album gives us a sampling of old-time, blues, folk, bluegrass, Cajun, Conjunto, Texas jump blues, Zydeco, R&B, western swing, and even country novelty ("Hey Bartender, There's a Big Bug in My Beer"). Obviously designed for listeners with eclectic tastes, this sampler allows us to discover or experience a variety of American roots sounds. These happy, playful songs are all about the time of the week when we relax, unwind, and socialize. Liner notes by Jeff Place suggest that we put this album on the CD player the next time family and friends come over to barbecue.

The music bursts with pep and will surely keep your party lively. How can you go wrong with a Cajun dance-hall stomp featuring accordion, guitar, fiddle and singing? It's interesting to see how compilers arranged the set with so much disparate material from so many genres. While most of the featured artists in the opening tracks are acoustic, by track five we are grooving to the electric jump blues of Erbie Bowser, T. D. Bell and the Blues Specialists. The Texas Playboys' "Big Ball's in Cowtown" is a good song to seque back to a more acoustic setting of Memphis Slim's piano/vocal and the New Lost City Ramblers' old-time string band sound. That group's rendition of "Bill Morgan and his Gal" also appears on the label's new release of songs about money called "If You Ain't Got the Do-Re-Mi" (SFW 40195). The album's three closing numbers offer three types of music with drums -- electric R&B from The Chambers Brothers, conjunto from Ben Tavera King and Los Poleros, and Zydeco from Boozoo Chavis and the Magic Sounds.

The albums from which the tracks come were released between 1959-2003. I'd encourage you to find some that you especially like, and then purchase your favorite artists' complete albums. And then you'll be able to party all night long to their music. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

This album convinced me to be a fan of Cajun music. The music is very entertaining and upbeat--impossible to be a bad (or sad) mood when listening. All twelve of the songs are wonderful, with each one better than the one before!

my aunt has this album and i borrowed it, only to burn it and never listen. then, a few months later i saw it and gave it a listen. i was expecting it to be good, but not this good. this album has a fantastic variety, great soul, honky tonk, country, and signature louisiana sounds. its like you're in the big easy. after a few listens, up to 4 of the songs were stuck in my head, it sounds stressful, but it was quite pleasant. if you want some flat out fun music and you're friends are "with it" i'm sure you'll enjoy this.

The Cajun Hank Williams.......2004-11-06

This guy is uncanny. I enjoy genuine country music (George Jones, Hank Sr, Patsy, Lucinda, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn) and I like cajun in small doses. D. L. Menard is really remarkable, and sounds like Hank Williams Sr. didn't die, but instead just moved to Louisiana and went underground. But his music is not derivative or imitative; he just happens to sound a lot like Hank. 2 thumbs up!

D.L. Menard Delivers the Goods.......2000-06-21

My first experience with D.L. Menard's music came at a local pub, that had a song blasting out of the jukebox. The song was completely in Creole, but I was struck by the intensity of the voice that was singing it. I rushed over to the jukebox and found the name. D.L. Menard, I knew I needed something from him. I ended up buying Cajun Saturday Nights because it's his only album that is mostly sung in English that he has. It has a great blend of country and cajun , with lyrics only D.L. could have thought up.. I highly recommend.

This is NOT all Cajun music .Ever heard the term "Swamp Pop"?.......2006-03-02

Without me trying to explain to the uninitiated, these tracks are mainly by 'Swamp Pop' artists....who are stylistically neither Cajun , OR Zydeco ..To understand the music by these classic Swamp Pop artists I recommend you read a book called 'Swamp Pop' , By Shane Bernard .. He should know what it's all about; his Father Rod Bernard cut the Classic 'Swamp Pop' tune of all time , 'This Should Go On Forever' way back when .I recognise several of the classic 'Swamp Poppers' on this great collection , Tommy McLain , Clint West ,Huey 'Cookie' Thierry and the Cupcakes ,etc .. a great collection put together by a man who knows his stuff .. the great Charlie Gillett , author and writer of many articles and books on American roots music. You will also notice on the sleeve design/title of this CD there is no mention of this being a "Cajun" unquote , release .

Misleading.......2001-11-30

This album certainly delivers on something, just not what I wanted. For those who think of "bayou" music as cajun, accordian/harmonica/thumping bass type stuff, as I was looking for, only about 1/3 of the tracks here deliver. The rest is the same type of rockabilly/honkytonk stuff that I don't necessarily associate with "bayou" - more like "anywhere in the 50's, moreso in the South." I was looking to inject some cajun into my cd collection. I'll keep looking!
