The Scandanavian music on Northern Nights is difficult to characterize: elements of Celtic, folk, Russian, and New Age all flow together for exotic, stunningly beautiful music. With a selection of songs from such premiere artists as Kirsten Bråten Berg and Hedningarna vocalist Kurki-Suonio, the collection radiates a dark, icy melancholy created from gentle guitar, violin, synth, and voice. Every song carries its own unique ambience, but Hege Rimestad's "Krishna's Cousin" typifies the lovely sound found throughout the album. With fretless bass, aching fiddle, deep drums, and floating vocals, "Cousin" rings softly, reminding one of an Icelandic Loreena McKennitt. In contrast, "Hilddá Luohti" has a touch of Asia in its delicate Yungchen Lhamo-esque vocals and gamelan-like sounds. --Karen Karleski

4 out of 5 stars Good exposure to Nordic Music.......2003-04-19

A lot of people might describe this CD as "mood music" or New Age, which would be enough to send me running in the opposite direction. I prefer to describe it as a good anthology of contemporary Nordic music, reflecting some traditional elements. If you want to relax and bliss out to this CD you should have no problem, but if you enjoy complex, sophisticated music, you also will find this to be a most satisfying CD.

My only quibble is a complete lack of liner notes. However, the CD does provide the various albums that these tracks came from, in case you want to hear more of a particular artist's music. Every track can be found on other CDs.

If you are not familiar with many Nordic artists, then this will be a very useful CD to give you some exposure!

4 out of 5 stars Some haunting tracks........1999-11-06

Some haunting tracks. Spoiled (for me) slightly by some rather extreme vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely, sensual, representative, modern.......1999-09-11

I bought this CD for myself and then I took a long trip to Oslo and Finland and brought it along. We had a birthday party for me in Oslo and it was all guys, just by accident. They were playing this hard-driving electronic music, as guys are prone to do and I said to my sweetie, I can't take it: it's my party, let's put on that Northern Nights CD. So we did and everyone calmed down and started conversing in a civilized manner and they were impressed by this music from their own damn lands and trying to figure out the dialects in the lyrics and so on. What a great experience for me and everyone else, too. The music isn't just traditional; it's modern and beautiful and comes from a place deep in the roots of the landscape and culture

5 out of 5 stars You can feel the aurora in the music.......1999-07-23

Fantastic compilation of Scandinavian Artists music. Melodic and hypnotic. Very tranquil yet musically involving and very interesting to listen to. Try it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, mysterious, lovely music from Scandinavia.......1999-07-20

I don't know much about the music of Scandinavia, but it has not stopped me from blissing out to this compilation. One of the most consistently beautiful listening experinces I have had with a disc. Heart breakingly lovely vocal and equally mesmerizing instrumental tracks flow together seamlessly. Treat yourself to this record!

Bukkene Bruse are a Norwegian quartet that features the Hardanger fiddle, an instrument with drone strings that give it a light, open sound unlike that of a standard violin. While the star of the band is undoubtedly fiddler Annbjørg Lien, the quartet is not a star vehicle, but a cohesive ensemble of fiddles, flutes, voices, and electronic keyboards that has a slightly austere, almost medieval sound. Don't expect driving fusion or aggressive folk-dance numbers. On this collection of tunes from Bukkene Bruse's 1995 and 1998 CDs (previously only available in Norway), they focus mainly on traditional material, from lively dance tunes to stately ballads, and deliver them in understated arrangements that emphasize the melodies rather than clever production. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Otherworldly Pleasure.......2004-07-20

After buying the Nordic Roots collection, I took a chance and purchased this CD buy these Northside Records artists. It was like opening a melodic treasure. The vocals and instrumental are powerful and tender at the same time. There is no adequate way to describe this recording. A must have for those who have been fans of Celtic Music and want to shake things up a bit.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most satisfying CDs I own.......2002-05-01

This is just a wonderful album from start to finish, not traditional strictly speaking, but also not veering off into any folk/fusion. It contains just that perfect balance of ambiance and engaging virtuosity to keep just about everyone happy.

The hardanger fiddle, played by Annbjorg Lien, is clearly the dominant solo instrument on a great number of the pieces on this album, but this should not overshadow some great flute work and moving vocals. The CD insert helpfully includes the vocals and an english translation, much to my satisfaction.

I find it hard to imagine that the listener will grow tired of this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Journey among the Fjords.......2002-03-27

Bukkene Bruse has created a 21st Century masterpiece of traditional Norwegian music. Evocative, transcendental and captivating this quartet combines fiddle, flute, electronics and percussion with. Free and diminishing rhythms accent melodies as key changes progress through each track. "Ein annan halling" is perhaps the signature track and includes a jews harp, not often used so effectively. "Fanitullen" opens with fiddle mastery, bowing and pizzicato. "Kjellstadhallingen" uses the softest flute to underlay the energy of fiddle and percussion. "Springar i dur" is almost a Celtic jig in its enthusiasm. "Numedalshalling" combines percussion, electronic keyboard, flute and vocals in a melodic progression.

Anyone who appreciates traditional, Celtic or medieval music should add this to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal Nordic music!.......2000-10-09

If you are a Celtophile and you want to listen to other ethereal otherworldly music, give "Bukkene Bruse" a try. They play Nordic music, on a mix of ancient and modern instruments - fiddles, nyckelharpa, flutes ...

Some of the tunes are similar to Celtic tunes - lamenting and soulful, and at other times merry and playful. Arve Moen Bergset's voice is beautiful - it brings the air of Gregorian chant into the Nordic tunes. My favourite track in this album is Runarvisa (6). This album is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Required listening for prospective norsk folk music fans.......2000-06-22

This, the first of three recordings by one of Norway's best-known folk-music groups belongs in any collection of tradition-rooted Norwegian music. Annbjoerg Lien plays fiddle, mostly hardanger fiddle, Arve Moen Bergset does vocals, fiddle and hardanger fiddle, while Steinar Ofsdal plays sea flute, willow pipe, tin whistle, jews harp, ditze, cello and keyboards. They execute superbly on upbeat tunes, especially Til Saetersdal and Fanitullen (The Devil's Tune, a norsk folk favorite). Close your eyes and listen to Ofsdal's flute as he soothes your mind on Miriam Voggelaat, a tune partly inspired by his newborn daughter. Boen is another soulful tune with Lien steady on the hardingfele (hardanger fiddle). The group changes tempo smoothly on Hodalsbrura (The Hodals Bride) with Lien wailing alternately contemplative and celebratory playing the fiddle harp. Maalfrid Mi Fruve, a familiar norsk folk song with several versions receives a more serious treatment on this recording better capturing the drama of the story. This is my favorite of the three Bukkene Bruse albums; don't pass this one by.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest modern and traditional Norwegian folk group!.......1998-06-19

If you love celtic mouth music or any fiddle playing, this album satisfies beyond compare. It is definitely ethnic Norwegian but includes techno norsk music, as well as old and new versions of traditional tunes. The Hardanger fiddle player is Annbjorg Lien, who is famous world wide for her own playing and albums, especially "Prism". I just bought this on cassette, but am now buying the CD, because I couldn't bear not having this album at hand any time!

This must be one of the loveliest Christmas albums ever made, a festive garland of carols performed by four of Norway's finest traditional musicians. Annbjørg Lien is a world-famous exponent of the drone-laced Hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle), and she has also performed with the Chieftains. Arve Moen Bergset's naive tenor is ideal for this material, and he plays a mean fiddle, too. Steinar Ofsdal's pastoral flutes and Bjørn Ole Rasch's pipe organ add further dimensions of unashamed emotion and unpretentious grandeur. The selections include instrumentals as well as vocals, offering opportunities for rest and reflection amid the soaring, four-square hymns. Aside from folkloric material, the set includes a tune cowritten by Keith Emerson (!), original pieces by band members, and even a quote from Maurice Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin. That the album was recorded studio-live in a church graces it with an uncommonly warm, natural sonic ambience. --Christina Roden
