Recorded shortly before the qawwali master's death, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's posthumous album is brimming with rich vocal harmonies, upbeat Indian rhythms, and plenty of hand clapping. It is easy to understand why Ali Khan became such a celebrated figure, for his music exudes passion and warmth. However, given that Body and Soul features four cyclical tracks that sprawl over 68 minutes, it might not seem an ideal album for casual listeners. But even when played as background music, people should find themselves drawn to many of the amiable rhythms, even if some of the music runs a bit long. And Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan aficionados will be left to debate how Body and Soul measures up against the rest of his catalog. --Bryan Reesman

These days, it seems anyone can make an R&B album. However, recording a soul album takes that special intangible element. The 17-year-old Devon, England, native first proved that she has it with The Soul Sessions, a collection of rare soul grooves. She does it here again with Mind, Body & Soul, her first album of original material. For those who thought that Stone could only interpret vintage ballads, witness the midtempo attitude of "Jet Lag." Backed by a thumping backbeat, Stone tells of a love of so all-encompassing that it is physically draining. On lead single, "You Had Me," Stone takes the persona of a woman done wrong with biting edge and a funky wah-wah guitar introduces her "get lost" sentiment over an infectious hook. Mind, Body & Soul also features a host of moving ballads that are reminiscent of the more downtempo fare characteristic of The Soul Sessions. The choir-backed "Security" is an organ-touched tale of love and support in the wake of tragedy. "Spoiled," a song Stone wrote with the legendary Lamont and Beau Dozier of Dozier-Holland-Dozier, is a romantically lush offering in which Stone's alto caresses the piano-driven arrangement. Other Mind, Body & Soul highlights include the hypnotic "Snakes & Ladders" and the roots reggae vibe of "Less Is More." While The Soul Sessions introduced Stone to the world, this album will make her placement in the soul canon undeniable. --Rashaun HallAmazon.com

Gets better with every listen.......2007-08-03
If it does not slowly envelope in a wonderful musical hug around you, it will surprise me.
Splendid album.
I liked every song!.......2007-07-10
AMAAAZING!!.......2007-06-09
When I heard Killing Time, I thought for sure it was a remake because it sounded like such a classic song. THen I looked it up and saw that Joss wrote it, AMAZING!
Premium quality white chocolate.......2007-06-01
'Mind, Body and Soul' is a bit of a paradox. It is raw, yet perfect: its youthful rawness itself is very charming. What I ask of listeners is to give it time. The songs are generally very simple, a throwback to the days when music (and life) was simpler and more sincere. Because some of these songs lack a catchy hook and seem so simple, you might not like them at first listen. But have a bit of that patience that music fans used to have, and you might find that the simplicity is accompanied by great sincerity and feeling. It is such a refreshing change in the 21st century to hear music that is simply good and heartfelt, with no stunts.
The songs that most people will like quickly are 'Right to be Wrong' (fabulous musicianship and lyrics), 'Spoiled' (richly sentimental and lush), and 'Jet Lag' (fun). But after about 5-7 patient listens, you might find that every song has the capacity to charm you and connect you with this young genius. The songs that grew most on me were 'Security' (beautifully sincere, stirring, pretty in its idealism) , 'Young at Heart' (youthful idealism and defiance), 'Snakes and Ladders' (energetically soulful), 'Understand' (very relaxed and really fun), 'Don't Know How' (classic-sounding) and 'Sleep like a Child' (tender night song).
The icing on the cake comes with the hidden track at the end. Joss unleashes her angsty side with an intensity and depth of feeling that are astounding for a fun-loving 17-year old.
Not since Vonda Shepard have I liked a white soul singer this much. Joss Stone is phenomenal for a 17-year old and is that rare kind of singer who can really move people deeply even though her vocal technique is still quite far from perfect. She makes up for it by singing straight from her amazing soul.
[...]Your thoughts and comments are most welcome.
More of a good thing.......2007-05-31
Right to Be Wrong, Spoiled, Jet Lag, and Snakes and Ladders are just some of the highlights of this great album. The mix of songs shows her skill with dance tunes as well as slow jams.
There is absolutely no sophomore jinx here. If you really like soul, just listen to a couple of track samples and you will be hooked!

Music and Vibrational Balancing.......2007-07-25
This set is vibrational toning music to balance your chakras. The 1st CD is instrumental and the 2nd is a guided meditation through each of the chakras, from base to crown. Both CDs are really good and leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed. You can meditate with either, or you could easily use the first CD in a healing modality, such as Reiki or acupuncture. If you go to sleep on the CDs, I personally believe that's OK, because I believe your subconscious just takes over and takes in the programming. (If you've ever used good subliminal programming CDs, they do the same thing--continue to program you through your subconscious while you're asleep--at least, that has certainly been my experience. I often use some of my sleep time for positive learning experiences.)
1st CD is Chakra Balancing: Sahaswara--10 tracks of meditation music. It is very relaxing and very pretty. This CD runs about 1 hour.
2nd CD is Chakra Meditation with Deepak Chopra and music by Adam Planck. It is very vibrational music and is combined with the soft relaxing meditations (in Deepak's voice) for each of the 7 Chakras. There are 9 tracks in all in CD 2, an opening trae 7 chakras beginning with the base/root charka through the crown chakra, and ending with the bringing together of the 7 chakras in summary.
An example is the 1st Chakra "Muladhara" in Sanskrit. It's color is red and its sound is "Lam," pronounced "Lum". The location of the chakra is explained. This charka deals with basic survival, security and trust. The systems affected by this charka are skeletal, lymph, and elimination. It also involves the sense of smell. Stones related to the charka are: hematite, garnet, jasper, and ruby. So, the thought process is, if you have a problem trusting people, your root charka is out of balance. (By the way, ladies, here's as good an excuse as any to buy some jewelry : - ) (Uh oh. I guess all the husbands just got upset with me.)
Anyway, Deepak takes you on a meditation through each charka while playing the vibrational music. He explains the color and has you visualize it and breath it in while he explains what the charka is related to (as I explained above). When you finish meditating on that charka, he gently moves you to the next by ringing Tibetan bells. He moves directly up the Kundalini energy path to the crown charka.
There is also a booklet which again repeats what is in the meditation for each charka and provides a drawing showing each color and the location of each charka.
If you're reading this review, you probably already believe in the value of cleansing and reconnecting your chakras. If you don't believe and you somehow found this review anyway, this is still very relaxing stuff, especially the 1st CD. So, if you just want to chill, this will do it. If you have trouble getting to sleep, this CD set will probably also help you with that and do you some additional good in the process. I use it to balance about once every other week, sometimes more. I am actually balancing right now while I'm writing this review. Ha. It's called metaphysical multitasking : - ) (I meditate every night with something, but I have a collection of several, so I rotate them around.)
Namaste'
Fantastic!.......2007-07-18
Everything the other reviewers wrote, about feeling more focused, centered, balanced- is exactly how I felt after just one listening to the guided meditation. I tried it during the day and felt invigorated afterwards - and I tried it before bed and slept very restfully afterwards. I am relatively new to meditation and frankly not all that disciplined - I sometimes struggle to keep my mind from wandering - but I find this album really reins me in.
Highly recommended!
Well worth checking out.......2007-06-29
There are a billion meditation music cd's out there and better ones too. However, this is worth buying just for the guided chakra meditation. He walks you through the meditation explaining the name and purpose of each of the 7 major chakras without it ever feeling intruisive. There is plenty of time between his talking to allow yourself to concentrate on the chakra involved and go inside.
Of course you can do it on your own when you get used to what you are supposed to be doing but I still stick my Ipod on from time to time.
Love it!.......2007-06-25
highly effective treatment.......2007-05-12
I haven't listened to the massage music half of the CD very much, but it is very relaxing and not annoying at all. That's about the best anyone can say about most massage music that I've heard. It would also be great to do some freestyle meditation to.

Superb!.......2006-05-31
Don't let the "Trio" moniker fool you--the efforts on this CD skillfully punch out contemporary grooves, without betraying the trio instrumentation!! I was playing it in the car (by the way, sounds veerry nice on my Mark Levinson system), and I even caught my adolescent son bobbing his head and tapping his feet while listening to it.
I could rave on all day, but this CD is better experienced than discussed. You won't be disappointed!

This CD compiles several Coleman Hawkins sessions recorded between 1939 and 1956, capturing the masterful tenor saxophonist at the height of the swing era, in the midst of the bop revolution, and at the helm of large orchestras. While the quality of his accompaniments varies tremendously, Hawkins's contributions don't. The earliest session climaxes with his classic solo version of "Body and Soul," a landmark in both the harmonic language of jazz and improvised musical architecture. Another four tracks come from a 1940 octet date with some of Hawkins's old associates from the Fletcher Henderson band, Benny Carter (on trumpet here) and J.C. Higginbotham on trombone, along with the underrated clarinetist Danny Polo. It's small-group swing of the first order, with touches of traditional jazz in the improvised ensembles.Tadd Dameron wrote the arrangements for a 1947 band that includes trumpeter Fats Navarro, trombonist J.J. Johnson, pianist Hank Jones, and drummer Max Roach. While the horns all solo fluently on Dameron's "Half Step Down, Please," it's the three ballad features for the leader that stand out, Hawkins drawing inspiration from Dameron's moodily dense harmonies. The settings are pedestrian at best for a series of 1956 recordings, with Billy Byers and Manny Albam writing arrangements. Hawkins bristles with individuality, whether soaring over a substantial big band on "The Bean Stalks Again," cutting a new path through a cluttered "Body and Soul," or counterposing his ruggedly magisterial horn to still fussier arrangements of "I Love Paris" and "Under Paris Skies." --Stuart Broomer

Stark Raving Mad - The Life and Music Of The Hawk.......2005-04-23
Not enough Hawk.......2004-05-29
This is 5 star material, as is most Coleman Hawkins. He is presented with half a dozen all-star orchestra and small groups recorded between 1939 and 1956. A swell way for the unintiated to get aquainted with the Mother of all (tenor) sax players. To hear the Hawk is to hear them all: you'll find shades of every tenor from Adderly to Rollins. The selections are carefully chosen for artistic merit and variety. The sound quality is quite good, even on the older sides.
The problem is, as an overview it is too narrow. Spend the extra money to get the 2CD "Retrospective 1929-1963" which contains 40 tracks, including all those on this CD. The Hawk is too huge a jazz legend to be captured on a dozen CDs, but at least the expanded release covers a sizeable chunk of his career. If you cheap it out and buy this one, you'll love it but in retrospect you'll wish you'd gotten the 2CD version.
Postscript 12/01/06: Although the 1929-1963 Retrospective is no longer available at Amazon, check out the $9 Quadromania 4CD set. Not quite as good audio quality, but a lot of bang for the buck. A lot of the Quadromania Fletcher Henderson trax feature Hawk, and he is prominent in Disk 4 of the Quadromania Pee Wee Russell collection.
Everyone loves this cd.......2004-01-08

album fail the test. I can't have the client relaxing into parasympathetic mode, and then an abrupt change in the pace or volume of the music demands their attention. That nullifies the previous fifteen minutes of work.
Llewellyn's music on this recording is beautiful, when you put your attention on it, but provides a pleasant background sound if you choose to not consciously attend to it. This work rivals the recordings of Liquid Mind, in its suitablity for a tranquil massage therapy session.
